Last Fall we decided to take advantage of SCV Water's lawn replacement program (Thanks so much for Chavon's help--we would have struggled without her guidance through the process). It was a long process as we were planning on basically re-landscaping almost our entire back yard after having lived here for 20+ years. We interviewed 5 contractors...and knew right away that Curtis of Smith Landscaping was our 'guy.' Two of the others were 'sales' people. Curtis is the owner of Smith Landscaping and wrote up a concise line by line proposal with prices for each item we wished to have changed/installed. We went with a south-western 'look,' with drought tolerant plants, pavers and decomposed granite. We had drip irrigation installed for every plant in our back yard including almost 50 new plants. We had almost 50 2'x2' pavers set in concrete as well as about 200 linear feet of bed brick edging installed. Curtis was on top of everything--always available and flexible when changes and additional work were requested. Also he has a good attitude, a good sense of humor and is very friendly. But probably the most important aspect of the job was Smith Landscaping's work crew. An amazing group of workers! They showed up every day at 6:45 in the morning and worked very well together. And they worked hard! They removed existing sod and about 3 inches of dirt to accommodate the pavers and decomposed granite. It was windy and cold and rainy, but they got the work done to our satisfaction. Special thanks to Serafin the lead crew member who accommodated our micro managing. We were 100% happy with the final outcome. Two other things to consider: We requested that "ramboard" be placed on top of our current decking to prevent damage and/or staining and it work very well. The nicest construction contractor you will ever meet! Despite how well you might plan a project, a relationship with a contractor on a home construction project always seems to have adversarial overtones, in my experience. So our barbecue island project with Smith Landscape was the most pleasant exception to this apparent rule. Every step of the way, Curtis Smith had a positive, can-do attitude. Whenever a minor issue or unexpected hitch came up, Curtis responded with a smile and a "no problem," and everything was quickly back on track. He checked in at the job site at every step of the project. A key to the project's success was a foreman or lead worker who is very proficient and hard-working. Another confidence-building aspect is that Curtis responded to texts instantly, and was always there to answer a phone call. He is amazingly responsive. He is also very open to customer suggestions. He was very friendly and seemed to be honest. After getting quotes of $8k or more for the same job (not to mention that another company told me that the job was ''too little '' for them to take!), Curtis sent us an email the following day with a quote that my wife and I felt more comfortable with. So the next question was, will the job be professionally done? They came in on a Saturday at 7am sharp (with a crew of 7!), and were done by 2pm! And the work was more than we expected! Our church had planned for many years to remodel an area of our campus into a Fellowship Plaza and had finally raised enough funds to move forward on this vision. We did what most people do, contacted and obtained 3-4 bids from various companies. In that process, Curtis Smith was a pleasure to work with. He was always very responsive and gave us some great suggestions for modifying our original plans to allow for some significant cost savings. My wife and I bought a new construction home and had to landscape our (tiny) backyard from scratch. We got several price quotes from a variety of companies, including most of the top name companies in SCV. Curtis was by far the most professional, the most responsive to all our odd questions (providing quotes for multiple options to save costs where we wanted to), and the most reasonably priced. The actual performance of the work was fantastic. Fair payment terms, no nickel and diming, and clear plans. Even with all the latest rain storms we've been having, the pavers immediately got tested for slope, and the installation seems to be perfect (no water poolage at all - which our neighbors who used the builder-recommended option or installed themselves can't say). He even worked with our pain in the ass management company to get the plans approved. I would highly recommend him to everyone. One unexpected benefit from this fantastic work (including the little details like the cutout for another planter area and the different paver block shapes creating a border around the pavers) is that it makes our backyard feel bigger and more like an extension of our living room. It definitely added more value to our house. If you're planning to landscape your backyard, I'd recommend getting a variety of quotes and immediately throwing away anyone that comes in a lot cheaper than the rest because clearly their doing something wrong (not high quality materials, not fully bonded and licensed, etc.). Work with the landscaper to figure out a plan that you want and plan for the future (i.e. pre-wire everything). And finally, get a quote from Curtis! Look no further! I recently used Smith Landscape and couldn't be happier. Full disclosure, I'm a detail-oriented person, leaning OCD and a worrier from birth. Curtis came to my home for a consultation and estimate. I know what I like and don't like, so I let him know what I was thinking but also told him I was looking for suggestions and ideas too. Just because I might think something is a good idea, you won't be hurting my feelings if you tell me it won't work and why. After discussing the ideas and receiving what I felt was a fair bid, I was ready to get started. When I didn't hear from him for about a week, my worrying started to set in; it's an affliction. I checked in with him and he let me know when he would be starting. Once the work began, I was immediately at ease. Curtis was so easy to work with. He is a bit OCD himself and it absolutely shows in his work. He certainly has great pride in what he does and cares about his clients. I HIGHLY recommend Smith Landscaping and Maintenance. We have used Smith for two separate projects now and have found them to be reliable, personable, detail oriented, and committed to excellence. Curtis Smith was our project manager for both of our projects. I appreciated how much he listened to what we requested and followed through. Additionally, he was at our job site at some point every day to manage his staff and the project but also to check in with me to make sure that I was aware and in the loop at all times. It was easy to get in touch regardless of day, night, or weekend. We could text, email, or call and we consistently got a response right away. The first project we had Smith do was a driveway extension to make our driveway wider so we could park multiple cars on our driveway. I was impressed how Smith created what we wanted with our simple sketches. They also worked hard to find the materials to ensure that the extension matched our existing driveway and landscape. Our second and most recent project involved a HUGE fire pit and bench, concrete pad for our spa, removal of a large cement planter, and landscaping. We had provided Smith with a sketch on graph paper and an image from Pinterest on how we wanted our backyard to look and they made it happen. I was particularly impressed with Smith's Masonry Contractor who kept my Pinterest image right next to his tools and continually used it for reference to ensure that the fire pit was being built to match the inspiration image. Further the Masonry contractor was committed to detail and would measure everything he built multiple times to be sure that it was correct. All of the staff, were helpful to my electrician who needed trenches dug for the spa. I appreciated how they all worked together well to get everything done. Throughout our projects, all of the staff were friendly, hard working, patient, and kind to my children (which is a huge deal because there are 3 of them running around).
