I really wanted to like this place but our food took FOREVER. The wait staff really tried to make it right by discounting one of our entrees (we both got the pork cutlet) but they also didn't tell us it was going to be slow. The restaurant wasn't even that crowded at that point. The worst part was that the potato salad was inedible. The potatoes tasted gross and the dressing was tasteless. The pork was perfect and so was the mustard sauce but it was really really disappointing overall. And even with the discount, still pretty expensive. I may come back and try it again, but there are a bunch of restaurants on this street that I could try instead. The mezcal Negroni was better. the cheese plate was very light for two people and was heavy on meat in spite of being a "cheese" plate. Service was ok but seemed a bit hesitant and unskilled. Maybe we got a new person. He never asked if the drinks or food were to our liking. In all, there are better places to spend $100. Parking is difficult but that is true for so many places. read more

This is a hipster joint and one of the up-and-coming districts of Seattle. It is a neighborhood favorite of our friends. I wasn't expecting such high prices, but for the ambience I suppose that's what you pay for. The food was decent quality but they forgot our coffee refill a couple times. Would it come here for brunch if you have a hankering and a larger than average budget. It was also extremely loud inside, would speak to the popularity. I've been going to Smith for years and it is nearly unrecognizable aside from the decor. I used to love this place but it's really gone downhill. Service was expectedly terrible due to Covid but then continued to be terrible for too long. Now service has improved, but now the vibe and menu is different. They suddenly have a limited wine list of California wine that you can buy at Safeway for less than $20/bottle. I asked to taste one of the reds and it tasted like it had been open for days. After passing on the wine, I ordered an extra dirty martini that had 3 olives and zero olive juice. As a Seattle native that loves my hipster indie music and expects to hear at least one Head and the Heart or Bon Iver song while I'm there, my ears were assaulted by the recent playlist of Top 40 hits. I do not want to hear Charlie Puth, Taylor Swift or Dua Lipa when I'm here. If I want that kind of vibe, I'll go somewhere on Pine/Pike on a weekend. Smith on a Wednesday? Hard pass. read more

This was the worst dining experience I've had in a long time. I used to come here years ago, and was very excited to bring my wife here since we were passing through Seattle. First the good: The staff was very friendly and the ambiance and decor is super cool. Now for their challenges... oh boy where do I start? Our server was brand new and kept apologizing that he was. I don't think he ever waited a table in his life, or ate out at a restaurant because he had zero clue about a standard service flow. He also had zero idea about the menu, drinks, or what they offer. But being new is not the problem. The problem was that he had no support from the rest of the staff, especially the woman who appeared as if she was supposed to be training him; and they were not the least bit busy. The duck poutine was good, and the Mac and cheese was okay but not nearly as good as it used to be. The Steelhead salmon had a weird dirty taste to it like they used an old pan with rancid oil to sear it. Kale salads are typically one of my favs so I ordered the kale Caesar-- it was inedible. The purple kale they used was so old (mature) and tough that you'd have to be a bovine to chew or digest it. They noticed I didn't eat it and very kindly took it off my bill... it was as if they knew the problem. Then our meal was over and we sat with empty drinks and empty plates pushed to the side for a looooong time before I finally went up to our server who was sitting at the bar drinking a beer and eating dinner with what appeared to be the rest of the staff. I asked for our check and they all apologized and said, "Oh sorry we've been off the clock for a long time." And then they hollered at some poor server who was now running the whole restaurant by himself and told him we wanted our check. We had no idea our first server had handed the table off to someone else... it looked like he just ditched us to sit at the bar and have a beer. So needless to say, our one night in Seattle was wasted on poor service and mediocre food. In hindsight we should have paid attention to the fact that it was pretty empty on a Friday night. read more

I had heard really good things about the brunch. We went there to celebrate Fathers day and were really disappointed. Servers were nice and friendly and that was about the only good thing. Food took 40 mins to arrive even though there were only 3 seated tables when we ordered. When the food arrived, Hollandaise sauce for the Eggs Benedict was split, bacon was soggy, fried chicken came out cold and the coating was separated from the chicken! Terrible experience!! read more

Got here around 2pm and the place had seats for days, so a worry about a wait for a table here should be beached. Service was swift, and we got our drink and meal orders in place. I got the steak and eggs and added some collard greens instead of the potatoes along with a bloody mary. The Bloody Mary: Pretty standard, but good. Nothing to write home about. The Steak and eggs: Cooked just the way i wanted (med rare). Juicy and had good flavor. The eggs were nice, and the collard greens were really tasty. Overall I think this is a sleeper location for brunch. The got a pretty solid menu, and the place is wide open for business if you want an easy place to get a seat. Wowzow! When you walk in to this hip bar you immediately feel like you're in a log cabin of a hunter in the back woods of our ancestors. Taxidermy birds and other animals parade along the wall beautifully. And I can be convinced that the ambient lighting was sourced from a fire. The bartender who looks like a cross between Adam Sandler and Shia Labeouff guided us through an array of unique cocktails; a negroni with a strawberry flair and house tonic called the red sun, and a tequila and rum drink called the bandido that tastes like the good parts of both the base spirits and not the bad. Truly cannot remember having worse service. Server noted he was new, so I'd recommend more stringent hiring practices. My husband doesn't drink and inquired about the non-alcoholic cocktails as noted on the menu and the server offer him a "Coca Cola" or "a Shirley temple." Is this real life? Should he get a kid's cup? He couldn't handle even the easiest tasks... taking orders. And after we ordered appetizers he brought our check (lol, ok guess we are getting dinner elsewhere which we did) and then told the gentlemen of the group they should figure out how to Venmo each other in the parking lot for the bill instead of splitting it (was this a joke implying a fight?) Stopped here for a weekend brunch and was pleasantly surprised by this Cap Hill gem! I got there a little after 10am and there were only a couple other tables with people at them. UPDATE: 12/21/19 After posting my first (3 star) review below regarding the hair that I found in my food, the owner messaged me on Yelp and graciously offered to send me a gift card so I could give Smith another try. It was really nice that they took the time to reach out to a customer. This really says a lot about the ownership, management, and integrity of their establishment. With the generous gift card from the Smith owner, my boyfriend and I went to try this place out again today! I ordered the same thing: Mushroom benedict. My boyfriend ordered the Gin & Juice and their Chicken and Waffles. Like the last time we sat at the bar. Service was quick. The bartender put some menus in front of us right away and took our order. We didn't wait too long to get our food. We were both starving so we couldn't wait to dig in. My benedict was delicious. Flavorful, delicious, and filling! My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed his chicken and waffles. He actually said that it was the best chicken and waffles he ever had. I asked him to compare it to another favorite, the Screen Door chicken and waffles in Portland, Oregon. He said that he actually prefers Smith's! He said the chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. He also said the waffle had a slight chew to it and had a similar consistency to mochi waffles, which he really liked. He even said that this is now his go-to spot for chicken and waffles! If you're looking for a good brunch place with delicious food, I highly recommend coming to Smith! You won't be disappointed. --- I wish Yelp had specific categories for service, food, cleanliness, etc. because I don't want to give this place 3 stars after having a really tasty meal here. The reason for the 3 stars is for two things. 1. When we sat up to eat at the bar for brunch, we were waiting a bit long until the bartender stopped to put down their phone to notice we were waiting to be greeted with menus and water. However, that wasn't the biggest issue that day. 2. I ordered the mushroom benedict which was so delicious and flavorful, that I'm actually considering going back again IF I don't find another hair in my food. While I was eating my benedict, which comes with potatoes by the way, tucked under the potatoes was a hair. If you take a look at my photo, you can see it. It ended up being sliced into two pieces because my bf tried to slide it off my plate with his knife and ended up cutting it in two. The food and the cocktails were really great and like I said earlier, I would definitely like to come back and try their other brunch items. But thfinding a hair in my food/on my plate kind of grosses me out and puts a slight damper on my dining experience. Went to Smith this weekend for a friend's birthday brunch. It was my first time there and I was impressed. The drinks and the food were equally yummy and I cannot wait to go back and try more. The downside, the drinks are a little pricey and some of the food items can run out. The upside, everything tasted really good. I ordered the Bloody Mary and the Mango Lassi during brunch. Both had good flavor and not a strong alcohol taste, which is my preference. Even though I could not taste the alcohol, there was definitely enough alcohol in it to get a good buzz (but I am small...) Others at the table order the Mimosa pitcher, nothing special from the taste and they were severed in water cups. I think the cup style kind of goes with the whole mood of the restaurant but still would have preferred a champagne or wine glass. For the food, we ordered the Steak & Eggs and the Seared Tuna Nicoise. The Seared Tuna Nicoise had a nice presentation but there were no pictures on yelp of it so we were not sure what it would come out looking like but had a guess. The dressing was on the side, and looked mayo based? It was definitely thick and you could turn the cup upside down without it falling out. The Steak & Eggs was ordered medium rare and that was exactly what I got. It had a nice flavor and I really liked that it was cooked exactly like requested. I did not order the Housemade Breakfast Sausage but my friend did and it was super good. We tried to order another half way through the meal and they were out. I would definitely recommend trying it when you stop by and order it asap. Other dishes on the table were Chicken & Waffles, Eggs Benedict, and the Brioche French Toast. I am not normally a fan of the Eggs Benedict with the traditional ham on it but I tried it and it tasted good. I don't know if I would order it but I would say it was better than your average Eggs Benedict. The vibe in the restaurant was busy but the waitresses and waiters were all very kind and helpful. This place used to be great with excellent cocktails, outstanding happy hour menu, quality of food and service. Something has fundamentally changed recently and all of this has declined. Change in management maybe? Folks working there are still very nice, but service has become very slow, cocktails have become mediocre, beer is flat, and food is always very late coming out and not terribly appetizing. I crave their burger on a regular basis and always order it with a fried egg. I love that you can make reservations here, so you can ensure you and your party get in. I've only been here for brunch and just keep coming back. It's such a cozy spot with a very hunting lodge atmosphere with just the right amount of hipster touches to make it Seattle. Friendly and extremely chill staff with pretty consistent service. I've tried most of their brunch menu and everything was delicious - from the brisket sandwich to the chicken and waffles to the seasonal scramble. Juicy chicken, huge waffles, brisket covered in melted cheese, perfectly cooked eggs.. mm, You literally can't go wrong with any of the options here, and the menu does change with the different seasons, which I love. A lot of the options are on the heavier side in my personal opinion, but it's definitely a fun and different take on your traditional brunch options. And of course, MIMOSAS! Their mimosa pitchers are so worth it, and you have more options than just your standard orange juice mimosa. I think we've shared it with 3 total people, and it was the perfect amount (dare I say, maybe a little too much? Is that even possible?). They ran out of pitchers a couple times when I was there, so just let that be a sign of how popular and worth-it they are! I highly recommend checking this place out for maybe something other than brunch. Oh and on top of all of that, they take reservations!!! Even for brunch, so save yourself some time and do that. :) No great parking options in the area, but I haven't really had too much trouble finding some spots within a few blocks on the more residential streets. read more

The skin wasn't as crispy as it should have been and the duck didn't taste fresh. The fat layers were disappointing and it just wasn't as good as it's supposed to be. Smith used to be my go-to happy hour place. Yesterday was my first time back in a couple of years, and I was so disappointed with the changes in the menu and food quality. Happy hour menu: - Mini-poutine: tasted good and we all liked it - Small cheese plate: it should be called "a thicker slice of one cheese plate." It came with 5 pieces of stale baguette, and random pickled vegetables which didn't taste good with the cheese nor on their own (pickled cauliflower and cheese?); it used to be a meat and cheese plate, and some of the pickled vegetables tasted great with the meats, but now that meat is gone, why keep the random pickled vegetables? - Mini-caesar salad: it was very "mini" especially given its happy hour price - Wings: tasted like sausage (!?) I also ordered my old-time favorite: the Smith Burger. I still remember how good it tasted, and that perfectly crispy-on-the-outside but soft-on-the-inside bun. This time the burger was awful. The bun was very stale. My medium burger was well done. There was not much sauce, so the entire thing tasted like a stale bun soaked in meat juice. I couldn't finish it. As we were leaving I noticed my jacked was covered in some sticky syrupy goo, which had to be on the chair where I placed it when we got to the restaurant. But we saw her and the bartender talking with their friend who was sitting two tables over. No drinks, no food order, we are literally sitting there holding our menus, deciding if we should just leave. Finally, we get the attention of another server who is great. She takes our food order, brings us water (our jug was empty), etc. The original server finally comes by with our drinks and says she swears it was the bartenders fault. Drinks were good. As an eggs benny connoisseur, I proudly crown Smith as having the BEST hollandaise I've ever had. It's orange in color but made with brown butter, paprika, and love. It will knock your socks off, and I applaud the creator of this recipe for such a flavorful approach to a breakfast classic. My guests also ordered breakfast rich dishes with great textures, colors, and taste, but were unwilling to share, and I don't blame them. I cannot wait to go back for another brunch, and am excited to see what Smith has to offer on their dinner menu.
