Went on a recent Saturday for dinner, and the restaurant was half full. Our server took our drink order and she didn't come back for another 10-15 minutes. But we saw her and the bartender talking with their friend who was sitting two tables over. No drinks, no food order, we are literally sitting there holding our menus, deciding if we should just leave. Finally, we get the attention of another server who is great. She takes our food order, brings us water (our jug was empty), etc. The original server finally comes by with our drinks and says she swears it was the bartenders fault. Drinks were good. Food was only OK. The carbonara had a watery sauce and, randomly, included carrots. You can get better food elsewhere, for just as much, and with much better service. read more

Loved that they were able to accommodate a party of 18 effortlessly free without no minimum to simply dine in their establishment (like every other place)! Pro tip: If you are going to get 2 or more mimosas in a party of two, get the pitcher. You might stumble out of there though! I love taking my friends here, it's such a cute kitschy place. I love the lodge feel to it. More importantly, the food is really good. So far I've had their season scramble, which changes. It is usually vegetables, cheese, eggs, in a skillet. I was debating to take my friend who was visiting from out of town to a good brunch spot. I was contemplating on Smith or Wandering Goose and we decided to come to Smith. Smith definitely has a good depiction of the Cap Hill vibe but not my typical type of brunch spot because the interior was so dark and I didn't like the taxidermy hanging on the wall... kinda ruined my appetite. It's definitely more of a bar vibe - I might have liked it more if I came in just for drinks and not brunch. However, the food was pretty tasty. I got the eggs Benedict... which is my go-to brunch item. It wasn't my favorite but it was above average on my Eggsnedict (just made this word up) scale. Anyways, I don't plan on coming back for brunch - but maybe for happy hour or late night food bites. Definitely the kind of place to hang out for awhile over some drinks, especially brunch. Kind of makes you feel like you're in a hunting lodge. But also a hipster. The food was great; the service... not so much. Our bill was literally tossed at us. Let me say this, the flavors of the food were amazing but they really got over shadowed by a rushed and poor service experience. We made reservations and it started out great. The host knew who I was when is said we had reservations at 8:30 which was a nice welcome. As soon as we sat down though it felt like our dinning experience was put on fast forward. The server gave little time for us to look over the menu. We had our meal and after when he asked if we wanted more drinks I said I'd have another but my dinner date declined. Went for dinner on a Friday night, got the roasted vegetable app, bar nuts, hangar steak and chicken Marsala. Bar nuts- Warm, well spiced and well seasoned, lots of Smokey sweet flavor but half my bowl was just dust and crushed nuts. If I'm paying 8 bucks for nuts I'd rather not get the stuff from the bottom of the pan. Roasted veggies- Egh. Nothing to really say here honestly. It was grilled asparagus and broccoli with a side of (ranch?) for dipping. Was very surprised when they brought the ranch out. It's a weird low effort pairing. The veggies weren't particularly seasoned or cooked well. They tasted more steamed than roasted. Hangar steak and side salad w/chimichurri- steak was ordered medium but was definitely more towards rare. Chimichurri was delicious, fresh and citrusy and was definitely the stand out for the dish but couldn't overcome the almost raw steak. My biggest complaint is the horrible salad that came with it which was 80% tough fibrous stalks of kale and radicchio. Completely inedible and I had a side plate piled high just with the chewy bitter stalks by the time picked through it. Chicken Marsala- Well seasoned juicy chicken and the sauce was rich, savory and cooked wonderfully. A bit disappointed on the portion size for a 25 dollar chicken dish but overall it was delicious. Tbh I ended up stealing Marsala sauce off my partners plate to dip the roasted asparagus in over the boring cup of sports bar ranch that was served with it. Biggest problem I had overall comes from what I felt was an overall lack of attention on the plates. All the flavor profiles worked together really well and there seems to be a lot of care put into them but the execution left a lot to be desired. Not a lot of focus and care on details or how a plate looks when it goes out to a guest it seems. Service was lovely and the pineapple margarita was great as well. Plenty of great aspects to the meal but due to poor execution none of it really added up to anything spectacular. The wait is a little nuts though. For a party of four for a Sunday brunch, we waited about 20-30 minutes. The customer service was pretty good. We had a waitress who made sure that our food was delicious and that our cups of coffee (3.25) were always filled. I ordered their signature Eggs Benedict (13.00). The Benedict was tasty and I especially liked their ham which was thinly sliced and layered. The eggs are a bit small but they were perfectly poached and fully covered in the hollandaise. I love Smith because its goodness is reliable. And since I am a creature of comfort, I stick to what I like...and I like Smith. The atmosphere is always pretty lively. Whether you're here for brunch, dinner, or drinks, this place always has a good vibe. The specials they have for dinner are usually pretty tasty and original. If I'm here for brunch, I go with the french toast with cinnamon crunch...AMAZING. They do have a chicken and waffle breakfast special, but if you're a Roscoe's fan, you'll be disappointed. If I'm here for dinner, I usually start with some poutine (it's pretty fantastic here, especially with sparerib on top) and follow up with a burger. Can't go wrong with a Smith burger with some sweet potato fries. You can also order a few of the appetizer-size dishes and split with friends. The spareribs are a huge favorite. During the summer, Smith opens the windows in the front, which allows sunshine and a nice breeze while dining. It's always fun to sit in the front and people watch, too. The center of the restaurant has communal dining tables, which can be fun if you're in the mood to meet new people. The servers are always super nice here and accommodating but suuuuuuuper hipsterffic. Sometimes I think they are in competition with one another to see who can look the most alternative. The crowd is the same, but there is also a good mix of regulars that are not uber-hipster. I'm super sad that Chip (previous GM) is no longer here - he was my favorite! We made online reservations for 6:45 and were seated early in the back of the restaurant. The restaurant got pretty busy as we waited for appetizers. The atmosphere is causal, typical American pub style restaurant. For appetizers, we got the poutine and macaroni and cheese. Both items were extremely average. The macaroni was served on a small cast iron skillet but was barely warm. The poutine was loaded with cheese and pulled pork, but the cheese hardened quickly on the pork and just became a blanket for the overly sweet pork. There's only about half a dozen entrees to choose from. I got the pork loin which looked great when it came out. It was pretty thick and when I cut into it, it was pretty obvious the cut was going to be dry. it had an off putting bitter taste to it. I cut my friends at the table a pieces hoping to finish the dish, but no one else liked it. The corn purée underneath the pork was so sweet that it could have been dessert. The two flavors made no sense together. My friends got the risotto, chicken and scallops. The only dish that was finished the scallops, but only because there were only 3 on the plate. The rest of us just quietly push our dishes to the center of the table and waited for the check. When the waitress came over to hand us the bill and offer boxes, we all declined. she must have noticed food left on our plates but didn't really mention it. It was a title disappointing, much like the food. It was $19-22 for an entree that we didn't like. As we were leaving we saw every table had a burger on it. We stopped by Smith for dinner a few weeks ago and glad we stopped by the time we did because, boy, there were so many people who stopped by to get a table after us but had to wait because all the tables were taken/booked! And that was on a Tuesday evening. As a party of three, we ordered poutine to share, and each of us ordered, a Cuban pork sandwich, fried free range chicken and a vegetarian burger. Our food reviews were mixed. The cheese on our didn't seem fresh to us (when we chewed it, it didn't squeak as we expected). The Cuban pork sandwich was ok, but nothing to rave home about. My friend's chicken looked dried and bland. I liked sweet potato fries that came with it, and my friend actually tried and like how surprisingly flavorful the veggie patty was. Overall, the ambiance of this restaurant was fine. It has a trendy feel and a good energy to it. However, given the dinners that we tried and the price point, I'm not sure if this place would be on the top of my list to visit again However, some people said that Smith is actually a good place to try for brunch, so I would still keep this restaurant open to try for brunch, but not necessarily for dinner. read more

Smith has a nice atmosphere with lots of repurposed wood (the kind from old barns), low but sufficient lighting, and an attentive staff. The food was good but not great. The signature drinks were expensive but nothing special. The White Tail, a sophisticated martini was pretty good, but at twice the price of a standard well martini, not worth the extra. The G.O.A.T. sounded like a variant on a black Manhattan, but was way too sweet and not that interesting. The vodka and tonic was as it should be, and priced reasonably. The beef stew was tasty and a fairly good sized portion. The risotto was bland and disappointing. We asked the waiter about the seared scallops (how many one got - and he said four), and when they came they were tasty, but there were only three. ARGH. The roasted vegetables that came with the scallops were pretty good, and the aioli which accompanied them was also pretty good. The carrot cake was both non-standard (less chunky, less flavorful, lots of creme cheese frosting, in a square rather than a wedge), and basically lacking in flavor. The vanilla ice cream that came with it was standard (not a high-end ice cream, but just fine). All in all, I doubt we'll go back - though if someone invites us there, we won't avoid it, it just wasn't a good value. read more

We ordered the smoke brisket sandwich and the seasonal vegetable hash with steak. the smoke brisket sandwich something I would definitely eat with a fork. It's a pretty big portion and they give you a lot of fries. The vegetable hash with steak looked small but was actually a lot on that small skillet it's served on. I was here on a weeknight, and we walked in and joined a friend that was already there. The waitress watched us walk in and sit down. My husband loved it but I found it a bit too salty for my taste. Same with the French fries that came with the burger--too salty. The burger was good but not $16 good. The carrots, shallots, and goat cheese dish was also very overpriced and nothing special; I wouldn't recommend it. The trout and steak frites came with pretty big portions, enough to share. Come here for happy hour 3-6 to get reasonable prices on drinks (e.g. $5 glass of wine) and certain small plates on the menu. Interesting mix of Bavarian seating with relaxing antique chairs and group picnic tables, comfy booths with a high ceiling, antique pictures with mounted animal heads on the walls. Eclectic crowd that can be quite busy during the weekends, but the hostesses are very good about finding you a table. The beer selection is quite diverse and I really love the Karlovacko beer that come in the 16oz bottles. I can settle in here and drink a few beers and have some very good comfort food that is not typical of the pub scene. You can have a great hamburger and fries, half chicken that is baked to perfection, cauliflower macaroni and cheese, oysters and even brussel sprouts. All the food, drink, atmosphere and help are great. I can become addicted to working out at the gym running 2 miles then going there and hydrate back with a couple of beers. OMG! An amazing experience here! Our WWLW group met here for brunch and a taste and talk on Templeton Rye Whiskey. We had the large family style table in the middle of the room. Smith was a great place for this because of their vintage style themed restaurant that paired perfectly with our vintage style whiskey. The tastings were great, starting with our own crafted cocktail especially created for us! And then there was the food! The food was so beautifully presented and so delicious, I barely could get pics because of our family style eating! Who wants to take pics when if you don't grab it, you lose it? Not me! We were served corned beef breakfast sandwiches with a side of perfectly crispy and salted fries. And the sandwiches were delicious. Loaded with corned beef and topped with an over easy egg, they were a perfect compliment to our whiskey. Our next course was a chicken and waffle plate. The chicken was probably the best I've ever had in Seattlr. So moist and juicy on the inside, and golden brown and crunchy on the outside. Atop of a crunchy waffle with real butter and maple syrup, my tastebuds were dancing! While we were still munching on the waffles, a plate of roasted veggies was passed around that were a nice change from the sweet and heavy of the previous 2 dishes. It was a mix of veggies that were roasted to just tender, leaving them with a perfect crunch. To finish the meal, we were then brought a bowl of Greek yogurt with fresh fruit on top. Like the other dishes before us, this was just as delicious. We finished the meal with more whiskey and a sazerac cocktail for him, and a 712 Sour for me.
