Dentist from hell. Dr. Powers is extremely condescending, unprofessional, manipulative, and rude. While she may have some glowing reviews, the negative ones and the way she responds to them are more accurate when it comes to who she is. She should not be able to perform extraction services. I have never been traumatized by a dentist like I have Dr. Powers and then completely disregarded after concerns following the procedure arose. Her and her staff are completely mis informative, I do not understand how her practice is still open. 05/10/24 - I had a deep cleaning performed (even though at the exam a general adult cleaning was scheduled) and four wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Powers. I was ensured I'd be in a deep sleep from Halcion prescribed and numbed to not feel anything as I was nervous undergoing such a procedure. At my exam prior to this appointment and over the phone when confirming the extraction I was also ensured insurance would cover most of the procedure I paid the remaining amount prior to my appointment date (per Smithfield Family Dentistry "Policy"). Upon arriving at the appointment under one of two doses of Halcion that was prescribed by her at the exam, her staff had me crush the second dose on a clip board to place under the tongue following the cleaning and before my extraction. Not providing a pill cutter or crusher to ensure I was getting the correct dose of medication before an extensive extraction should have been my first red flag to leave . Dr. Powers had little to no regard for my comfort during the procedure. While she was numbing my mouth for the extraction and I was still fully awake she seemed to be annoyed I was not numbing as quickly or easily as she'd like. After beginning the extraction while I was clearly still showing discomfort she just kept on breaking and removing teeth while *TRYING* to keep me numb enough to not feel it. Multiple times during my extraction she left the room for extended periods of time, at one point my heart rate dropped extremely low and her tech just told me to try and calm down until it got back to normal. Once she was completed and my mouth/jaws were still numb she put gauze in the open sockets to absorb blood and left me laid back in the chair while she left the room. The gauze became so soggy before she came back it started to go down my throat, thankfully I was still AWAKE enough to feel it and say something to my mother who was present and witnessed the whole procedure in shock and horror. When Dr. Powers came back she gave me new gauze to hold in my gums and quickly dismissed us out the office with a care instruction ziplock bag that consisted of a small amount of gauze to replace until the bleeding stopped and a very small list of simple care instructions such as not drinking from a straw or smoking for 3-10 days and to rinse with warm water three times a day etc. There was no follow up appointment scheduled, follow up call received, or even a survey sent to receive feedback on the services. The Monday following my procedure I even called their office and left a voicemail expressing concerns and received no call back until I had a new dentist contact them for my charts to receive a follow up else where. Once hearing back from Dr. Power's and her staff over a MONTH after the procedure to see how I was - they were very rude and unhelpful. I also received a notice from my insurance after this call that they in fact did not cover any cost of the services I was ensured they would by Dr. Power's staff and I was being billed by SFD for an additional $1200 on top of what I paid prior to the procedure. After being seen by a second provider (that was paid for out of pocket) days after the extraction was completed, concern was expressed by them that Dr. Powers may have bit off more than she could handle with my procedure and she should have referred me to someone more specialized in extractions. They also did not understand why she didn't stitch the sockets close instead of leaving them open as they were extremely deep. Nearly a year later and the open sockets Dr. Power's left in my mouth are still not fully healed and I have been permanently traumatized of the dentist. She lacks compassion, empathy, and concern for her patients and she is unable to put her pride to the side to see when and where she is wrong. Steer clear of here if you can!! read more

Another great 6 month check up! Did have to wait a bit but the waiting room was comfortable and quiet as I was able to catch up on emails. Again, superb treatment from Brooke my hygienist who was thorough but careful in cleaning my teeth. Dr Power was very professional and encouraged me to use the mouthguard I was fitted for but had been lax about using. I had a root canal years ago and hope I never have to go through that again so I'm gonna try and be compliant with the mouthguard to reduce chances of a reoccurrence. This is the 2nd time I've been to this practice in the past two weeks. First, I had a routine cleaning and received a treatment plan since I was a new patient.This was the smoothest cleaning ever. Dr. Cole Younger and hygienist Josie were very gentle and accommodating. Neither of them were pushy about the treatment plan. Today, I went in to have some fillings done on my back molar. Yet again, very gentle and he finished quite quickly. Each time I set appointments, they were able to get me in within only a few days. I have never had an issue with getting dental work before coming to this dentist. I had two appointments, one where they x-rayed my teeth & the second appt was for two fillings on the right side. Both appts I waited more than an hour just to get to a room. However, the real issues began once I was in the chair. This review will focus on my second appt. After waiting over an hour, I assumed the appointment would last for maybe 35-45 mins for two fillings. Boy, was I wrong. First, I was left with a q-tip in my mouth to numb my mouth for the insane amount of needles used. So, for 30 mins I sat there with q-tips. Not getting any number after the first 15 min, though. Then, I was given 6+ numbing shots on the right side of my mouth. I've never had that many shots - not even when I had my wisdom tooth pulled. He then left while the numbing kicked in. Within 10 mins, my heart was pounding+my hands & legs were shaking. Had no idea what was going on& I was scared to move out of fear I was having a heart attack. Of course, no one was around - for the 20 mins that episode lasted, not 1 person checked on me or even walked by the room. So, I googled the symptoms (on my cell) to see if it was a reaction to the shots. Turns out, it was. I mentioned it to him when he came back 45 mins later. At this point, I was a nervous wreck, which is not the norm for me. I have never had an issue with the dentist. Now that I was numbed, I assumed the work would begin. After 5-10 mins of drilling &/or smoothing (w/e they were doing with that ancient & incredibly loud & nerve-racking torture device that I swear was made in 1872) the 2 areas I was to get fillings. I am 31 yrs old, & have had regular dental care since childhood. I assumed he would finish the fillings at this point. Right? Wrong. No, he left the room & went to tend to another patient. The dental hygienist, who had NO bedside manners, began putting some medieval metal fasteners around 6-7 of my teeth, + small brown spikes (resembled the end of a toothpick) in between my teeth, & then squirted the most disgusting liquid onto my teeth, I assume to kill bacteria. I wouldn't know, tho, bc neither her nor the dentist spoke to me or about what they were doing the entire time. Mind you, I've had a bite block in this entire time, which was absolutely killing me. So, we're waiting for the dentist to come back in from digging around in another patient's mouth -- & we wait... & wait. I am more anxious at this point, bc I had been in the chair for 2 hrs at this point & nothing had been done. She wouldn't let me remove anything from my mouth. I had the huge bite block, 6-7 huge metal fasteners that stuck 6 inches out of my mouth, 6+ pieces of long cotton that irritated the back of my throat. I could not swallow &due to the increasing discomfort, the concern with the amount of shit in my mouth & just dying for the appt to finally end -- I start tearing up (yes, I was silently crying in the chair, &this caused even more trouble for me as far as feeling as if I couldn't breathe & was choking. It was a truly traumatic experience & I now understand why people hate the dentist. Since she wouldn't take anything out of my mouth so I could talk or take a freakin' break, I typed out on my phone for her to please take something out of my mouth, but she refused to remove even a piece or two of cotton. She said she had to keep my teeth dry for the fillings. Really? 30 mins later I was at my breaking point, I wrote another message on my cell, asking her about the dentist -- "Where is he?" "What is taking so long?" She said she buzzed him to come back in twice & he'd be in soon. She kept spraying air & water onto my teeth - wetting & drying...over & over. I wrote another message about 10 mins later saying I wanted to go home & I was scared + anxious. Dentist finally comes in. Doesn't say anything to me, does not apologize for the wait. Does not tell me what he's doing or where we're at in the process. At this point, I was no longer able to act upon my anxiety, since I was depleted of adrenaline due to panicking for the last 2.5 hrs. 20 mins later, the fillings were done. I was so numb I could not bite down to ensure my bite was correct, which he chastised me for - perhaps he should reconsider jabbing someone 6+ times for 2 fillings. Again, I have TMJ & due to the dentist overbooking himself, & going back & forth between several patients at once, I had a bite block in my mouth for 2.5 hrs. It's been 2 wks since my appt & my jaws still ache & my teeth feel worse now than they did before. The soft tissue where I was jabbed with several needles is still tender. Again, I had 6 numbing shots& looked like I had a stroke for 4 hrs after my appt. I also had difficulty breathing through my nose due to it affecting my sinuses. Don't go here. I swear 99% of the reviews are fake - particularly the ones that revel in the "great work" or the "short wait time." Bullshit. read more

On a normal day I think it's crazy to spend over 2 hours at the dentist but during a pandemic I think it's even more important to be on time. The girls at the front desk do not wear a mask but stick a thermometer on everyone's head that walks in. I had an appointment at 12:30 to have my kids cavity filled, didn't get called back until 1:20 and didn't leave the office until almost 3:00. The waiting room with that amount of people waiting is dangerous and just plain ridiculous (all seats were taken). This office only has 1 dentist, How do you have 7 people waiting to go back at the same time?? When my son asked to have someone come back with him as he was getting a shot, he was told no because of the pandemic but I didn't seem any other precautions taken. I am extremely disappointed with this appointment. read more
