I never thought I'd say this but yelp failed me. Maybe it's because I'm not from the area but seriously? This is a poor excuse for what looks like a chain. Raving about their barbecue. First of all you walk in and there is an archaic board of "" menu options which basically consist of chicken or bbq. Not knowing what either were, through a series of probing questions we managed to place an order for a chunk of fried chicken, and a plate of chicken and bbq combo. The bbq was a mush of grossly colored and even worse tasting what looked like it attempted to be pulled pork. Served on a styrofoam plate? This place is basically the inbred southern cousin of a kfc. 2 stars because the fried chicken was edible. read more

This place was more like a local kfc than I expected. We took a good look and then turned around and went a few doors down to chik-fal-a. We were traveling through and not in the mood for fried food. It wasn't the cleanest. It was cute and old fashioned but I didn't expected the all fried only fried options. If you want friend food and want to support a semi small chain - try it? Decided to stop here for lunch today and boy what a mistake. The chicken breast was very tiny to start with then when I bit into it it was literally refrigerator cold and hard. The french fries were okay and the baked beans tasted old and stale, none of my good was hot. I ended up throwing out all away and leaving with only a drink to satisfy my lunchtime hunger. We stopped through on our drive home. We ended up ordering a BBQ platter with beans and potato salad. Also, we ordered a 4 piece chicken casket. The BBQ was delicious, but I was not used to the style of vinegar sauce they had. I didn't dislike it, it was just unfamiliar to me. The chicken was seasoned perfectly and had great flavor. Saw the billboard on I-85 and stopped in to avoid a thunderstorm. Place was well lighted which is a good sign for a traveler unfamiliar with the area. I ordered a chicken platter (included choice of sides and a drink...I went for hush puppies and Brunswick stew. The platter is priced @ $8.95 including a soft drink. My order came pretty quickly. The Brunswick Stew was tasty and stuffed with corn, green beans and meat. While nothing unusual in terms of flavor the chicken appeared to be freshly made which was a nice touch. Hush puppies were bland but warm. A couple of items: * I didn't quite get the Rat Pack decor (was Sinatra big fried chicken fan? Maybe so.) but the music was fun. * When eating in the restaurant I would have preferred not being served with plastic plate, foam plastic soup bowl and one plastic spoon. That's OK for take out but when sitting in the restaurant I'd hope for a bit more. * My table appeared clean but once seated I found it to be quite sticky. The men's room was messy and smelled like a cheap limousine after prom night... I'll spare any additional details * Maybe I looked suspicious but I couldn't generate a smile from any of the three employees I encountered. I shouldn't feel bad as other customers didn't fare any better. All in all this was a disappointing stop. While the food merits a "3" rating, the cleanliness and sour staff dropped this place to an overall "2" for me. There are better options, I'm sure. read more

I'm a fan of Carolina style (or eastern style as it's called in NC) pork so decided to stop here. First, the hush puppies they bring out were excellent. I ordered the pulled pork plate but the waitress brought a sample of the "chopped" pork, which is cooked in the usual vinegar and pepper flakes. The normal pulled pork is plain, which is probably what the guy here complained about being tasteless. I changed to that and was very happy! Order the chopped pork plate instead, that's what you want. A side of slaw goes well on pulled pork and the baked beans were among the best I've had. Chunks of ground beef and I think jalepino peppers in them. The atmosphere is basic but the service was friendly and quick. read more

Ate in on 8/3/18, the food was ok. Mom said her chicken breast wasn't overly crispy. Dad's bbq sandwich was ok. I got the chicken tenders plate w/ fried and baked beans. I am not a fan of my food touching so having half of my fries sitting in my baked beans was an issue for me. The tenders were crispy but not overly hot. Good honey mustard and good tea. I was really grossed out by the fact that the floors were so greasy and slick you had to hold on to chair backs to walk. The table was sticky even though it had just been wiped down. There was so much food on the floors and seats you had to be careful where you stepped/sat. The cleanliness of this store leaves a lot to be desired and it will be a long time before I return. read more

Great BBQ if you're into NC style. Since people's taste in BBQ is so varied, I can say that you should know what you're getting into. If you are into it, this is a great BBQ joint. Good for the price, and closer to the border than Lexington. I will eat here again as soon as I can get back. read more

Stopped here for dinner while traveling and was highly disappointed. The food was just horrible. We ordered shrimp and it was soggy and cold. The French fries were the same. We also had a BBQ pork sandwich which we threw away. The cole slaw was mushy and not at all palatable. The only thing that was edible was the hush puppies. We will never eat here again. read more

I really like Smithfield's, to the point I had been hunting one down on my trip back from DCC because I was craving some Brunswick stew. But this one disappointed me. I placed my order for two pints of stew for takeout at the front, then went to use the restroom while I waited. The bathroom itself could have been cleaner. The stalls were messy and the sink was water logged. When I returned to the counter, I saw my pints of stew on the kitchen counter ready to be packaged. I knew they were mine because I was the only one waiting for food. I stood and waited, and waited, and waited. It was easily 5 minutes I watched the cashier mill about and walk past the food before finally stopping to put a lid on it. I noticed stew running down the side of one container and he wiped the container on his apron. Personally, I found it a bit unsanitary. I only imagine aprons are where they wipe their hands too. I would have rather him used a napkin or towel. But I don't plan on licking the outside of the container, so I let it slide. He handed me the bag and didn't offer me any condiments, so I asked. I walked out to my car and my husband just about drove off the lot before realizing I had no spoon. We had to stop and go back so I could get one. Major fail to hand someone a takeout order of stew without utensils! Another issue- please smile! The employees had no personality. They weren't rude but they lacked friendliness. It was like I was bothering them. I will say, that stew was yummy. And it was really hot, so I wondered if the guy waited to put a lid on it because of the heat. Pretty good overall. Pulled pork was very moist and flavorful. Service was outstanding. Dine-in wait staff was very attentive. Portions for the sides were a little on the small side which was a little disappointing. Sauce was traditional NC, sharp and spicy. read more

We got our food from the drive through and we waited 20 minutes for 3 cars in front of us which is way to long for drive through we got out food and we had no fries and they still charged us for them and said they couldn't give us the fries even though we payed for them read more

Our second favorite lunch in Henderson... we get the Brunswick Stew (special, wo pints for $5.99) and a half dozen hushpuppies and a soda and a (always free) coffee) for about $9. A fabulous lunch. We have tried three BBQ restaurants in Henderson, and Smithfields is the best. Granted the BBQ sauce is bottled, store-bought Texas Pete instead of a house sauce, but the pulled pork flavor is good without a sauce. We think Smithfields has the best potato salad of the three restaurants we tried. The hush puppies and cole slaw are good. read more

I always find strange foreign matter in the barbecue here. One time it was a hair, another time it was a strange green fleshy nodule of some sort. Regardless the extra star is for their ice machine, I love Smithfield's bagged ice. I use it at home. read more
