Yelp 100 Challenge- #23 Ordered through the drive thru. Two kids tenders with fries and sweet tea. Also a bone in chicken plate with two sides and extra hush puppies. The food was hot and the service was fast. Minus 1 Star for no dipping sauce for the tenders, no fork or spoon, and dry tenders. Luckily there were only two because they were dry. French fries were fresh.

I recently decided to revisit Smithfield Barbecue after a few years, especially with a buy one entree, get one free coupon I received in the mail. When I arrived, the line was quite long, but it moved quickly. Their intercom was having some issues as it was very low, I could barely hear the person repeat my order back to me. The cashier at the window was very friendly, which I appreciated. However, I noticed that the plates were a bit messy. There was sauce on top of them...whoever packed the order had messy hands. When I opened the bags, both portions of coleslaw had slid under the chicken. I suspect this happened when the cashier handed me the bag, as it was held sideways. I also found a french fry in the slaw on one of the plates. I ordered the chicken platter (dark meat), which includes two pieces of dark meat and two sides. I had the baked beans and coleslaw for both. The chicken was really moist and crispy, and the coleslaw was crunchy and just right! The baked beans were tasty, although I'm not a huge fan of pork; I was surprised to find shredded pork mixed in, as this was my first time ordering the baked beans. Overall, I would rate my experience a 3.5 out of 5. I deducted points mainly for presentation, as I tend to be a bit OCD. I'll likely return, but I hope for a better presentation next time.

This place was the bomb! We stopped by for a quick bite while on the road. Cleanliness was a 5- there's a hand washing sink at door so patrons could wash their hands on entry--phenomenal! Every staff person in the place was cleaning. Service -- another 5. The food was delivered to our table by the time we sat. The food was tasty -- chopped BBQ on a bun with coleslaw and unsweetened ice tea for me.

Couldn't decide what I wanted and ended up here. Went thru drive thru and noticed as the car was ordering in front of me 2 thighs and fries for $4.99 I thought that was a good deal. I asked young lady and she assisted me with placing that order. I ended up ordering a pecan pie and it's from Sara Lee which was good. The chicken was good and the fries were very good cooked just right not overcooked at all. I ordered some of their hushpuppies and they were good also. Good meal from here.

This place was a pleasant surprise to find on our last road trip. The menu is simple and of course, revolves around their delicious fried chicken. We all had chicken plates and sampled all the sides. I really liked the bbq baked beans and hush puppies. There's no doubt, this is a meal you where you'll need to go "hands on". At this location, they even had a sink/hand washing station in the main dining area! The chicken was tender inside and had a crunchy, crispy exterior - just the way it should be. The prices are very reasonable and I think you'd be hard pressed to find anything to take issue with here. Staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean. They had plenty of seating, including a number of booths. Lots of parking and it's an easy in/out type of situation here. No fuss counter ordering and plastic ware keep it low-key like a summertime picnic.

I'm glad I decided to eat at the bar because that's where all the action happens! I enjoyed watching the interaction between the warm and friendly co-owner (co-owns with his sister) and the customers. The owner is originally from Jamaica and he's a U. S. Army veteran! Besides the good food, another reason to support this black-owned, veteran business! Dinners with 2 sides range between $12 to $17. Oxtails are $17. I had the $12 spicy jerk chicken with macaroni and cheese and cabbage. The jerk chicken and mac & cheese were delicious. The cabbage needed a lot more flavor. The guava punch was very good, though too sweet for my taste so I added water and it was perfect. I highly recommend this place. I will definitely go back.Check it out.

The fried chicken was crispy and fried hard just the way I like it, with plenty of flavor in every bite. The greens were seasoned perfectly, and the yams were sweet with a great texture--not too hard and not too soft. I visited on a hot summer day, and the restaurant can get pretty loud and a little stuffy when it's busy. Thankfully, they had fans placed throughout the space, which made it much more comfortable. Overall, I enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. If you're looking for good soul food and want to support a place with a meaningful mission, Whole Truth Lunchroom is worth a visit. Dishes vary from day to day but the fried chicken, baked chicken, and fried pork chops are staples. Plates come with two sides and you can see from the photo why the blackeyed peas are so good (spoiler alert - it's bacon, lots of bacon). Collards are also delicious and the yams are mildly sweet without being cloying. The banana pudding is gloriously warm and the meringue is fluffy. The pudding is a touch too sweet and I could have done with more bananas but it was large enough to share. The staff is genuinely happy to see you and are happy to talk about their work, if you like. The room is a bit bare bones and the bathrooms are rudimentary and cramped but everything works. There is parking directly in front of the restaurant. Thanksgiving take-out is available for pre-order (see photo). I have a strong feeling you won't go wrong with any of the choices.

Parking was plentiful, with dedicated carryout parking, regular restaurant parking, and accessible spaces. The restaurant has that classic, small-town Southern Sunday dinner vibe. The carryout area is exactly what you'd expect, small and designed strictly for takeout. The cashier is friendly, and the service is pretty fast. You can order at the counter, and the menu offers plenty of mix-and-match combinations. The fried okra was crispy and delicious. The pulled pork had a nice tangy barbecue flavor. The seafood platter was surprisingly good. I would skip the candied yams next time. Everything else was decent but nothing that really stood out. One thing to note: I was hoping for ribs after seeing them advertised, but they weren't available through the carryout menu. Carryout focuses more on pulled pork and pulled turkey, while some menu items are reserved for the dine-in restaurant. If you're passing through Rocky Mount and want a quick Southern comfort food stop, I'd definitely recommend the carryout. It's convenient, the portions are good, and the barbecue hits the spot. As for dining in, I don't think I'd make a special trip .It feels more like a great roadside takeout stop than a destination restaurant.
