I'm one of the weird ones that go into a BBQ place and order fried chicken, but every time I have the fried chicken is the best I've ever had. Not so at Gardner's. I think the secret to other places is they marinade the chicken (likely in buttermilk) so the chicken is fall off the bone tender. It wasn't here. It was chewy, greasy, and not worth stopping for. KFC makes better fried chicken.

Chicken, fried 4 of meal.

I have eaten there for years and still get excited when I am in the area and get to enjoy it once again.

Stopped here on a road trip from the Outer Banks and enjoyed the meal. Good prices and quality BBQ. Much better than standard fast food.

Food is good, service is solidly meh. Would give slightly less than three stars if Yelp supported it. But better than two.

First, about a 10-15 min detour from 95, free parking, cute little area with restaurants and a hiking trail. Restaurant is beautiful. Staff are efficient and friendly. Made great recs. Food is fairly priced and most importantly delicious! The owners are at the restaurant, the chef Ed, who's also from Philly! Came out to speak to us. His wife Yalem is beautiful and brought us to our table. We would highly recommend to anyone! I'm going to have to come back because they sold out of the peach crisp :(

They have a big space though there are also a lot of chairs and tables around. Food was good. The brisket was tender. Options for sides include mac & cheese, collard greens, string beans, broccoli, Spanish rice, potatoes au gratin, baked beans, coleslaw, fruit salad, corn bread, yams, french fries, etc. The coleslaw and baked beans were also good. For desserts, we enjoyed the bread pudding and peach cobbler. Would have given this place a 4/5 for food but service was really bad. Food took a long time to be served. This we understood because it was really a busy day. Because the cloth napkins smelled like rancid oil, we just asked for paper napkins. This took ~30 minutes before we got some. We also asked for some condiment. Since no one was checking on our table, we had to stand up and approach one of the staff to follow up on this, not once but twice but some vinegar never came. Though our server Gracie acknowledged and apologized for the bad service, service was still crappy and disappointing.

Great deal! And the barbecue is so good, the sauce is so good. And the staff here are incredibly friendly and kind. I love these locally owned places, and will eat here whenever I am in Wilson. Love me some Carolina barbecue, and Marty's certainly hits the spot. Drive thru looked packed but I dined in and parked in the auxilliary gravel lot. It was pretty packed but I got a table.

The good news ... from what they had to offer, the food was quite tasty. The bad news ... the offerings were limited. From what we saw on the menu, it seemed to be mostly chicken (with a lot of it fried) and some chopped pork. Now I know this is the Carolinas so brisket may not be an option. But the pig is so revered I thought we would see that offered a number of ways, and at least see some baby back ribs on the menu. Not sure this place is named properly as I expected to see more BBQ than anything else on the menu, and that is simply not the case.

Our service was excellent. Very friendly waitress. Heavy in…read morethe "no frills" category as far as the decor and the buffet. I was concerned about cleanliness, but it was packed with folks just getting out from church at 3 pm...so knew the food was fresh. I proceeded. I stuck with basics. I gave it a 4 because the fried chicken and biscuit was excellent, now mind you this is an Ohio girl speaking. ...but living in Georgia/SC long enough to know a bit about mac and cheese, yams, green beans, and desserts, I wasn't impressed. Mac and cheese was just Velveeta and noodle with nothing more to it. Yams floating around in canned sauce, very runny. Green beans from can and not doctored up at all(no bacon or ham). I tried the banana pudding, but had no bananas but could tell the pudding was vanilla which is the right choice. Some of the food was fresh and other items looked questionable. I was happy with my chicken and biscuit. It was a local spot and I appreciated the adventure element to eating there.

Parking was plentiful, with dedicated carryout parking, regular restaurant parking, and accessible spaces. The restaurant has that classic, small-town Southern Sunday dinner vibe. The carryout area is exactly what you'd expect, small and designed strictly for takeout. The cashier is friendly, and the service is pretty fast. You can order at the counter, and the menu offers plenty of mix-and-match combinations. The fried okra was crispy and delicious. The pulled pork had a nice tangy barbecue flavor. The seafood platter was surprisingly good. I would skip the candied yams next time. Everything else was decent but nothing that really stood out. One thing to note: I was hoping for ribs after seeing them advertised, but they weren't available through the carryout menu. Carryout focuses more on pulled pork and pulled turkey, while some menu items are reserved for the dine-in restaurant. If you're passing through Rocky Mount and want a quick Southern comfort food stop, I'd definitely recommend the carryout. It's convenient, the portions are good, and the barbecue hits the spot. As for dining in, I don't think I'd make a special trip .It feels more like a great roadside takeout stop than a destination restaurant.

It's unassuming...and absolutely packed at weekday lunch for good reason. Even with a full house, we were seated quickly, and the service was outstanding. I never caught our server's name, but she was wonderful. Everyone here treats customers like neighbors instead of table numbers. We even watched servers pull up a chair to chat with regulars about what to order. That's not slow service--that's small-town hospitality at its finest. My husband ordered a burger and fries, and let me tell you--that burger came stacked, fresh, and delicious. I had the house-made pimento cheese sandwich with onion rings. The pimento cheese wasn't quite my preferred style, but it was still tasty. The fries and onion rings were standard, but they did the job. A word of warning: if you ask for "everything" on your burger, be prepared for the kitchen to interpret that very creatively. Chili? Sure. Whatever else they can find? Quite possibly. Consider yourself warned! One thing I'd love to see improved is pricing. The menu and hot bar don't list prices, so you're ordering with a little faith. Also, the sweet tea lives up to its Southern reputation--it is sweet. Thankfully, you can mix it with unsweet tea if your dentist would prefer you did. We didn't try the hot bar, but watching plates of meat-and-two sides come out made me second-guess my order. And don't even get me started on the desserts. The cobbler and banana pudding looked downright sinful. If you're looking for fancy, keep driving. If you're looking for genuine Southern hospitality, hearty home cooking, and a dining room where strangers chat while waiting in line, you've found your spot.
