They serve good Jamaican food and have a full bar. I found the restaurant on Google when I searched for affordable restaurants nearby. I loved Guava Island. When I walked in on a Thursday around 5:30 p.m., it was very quiet, with 1 person at the bar. Take out and eat in business picked up as dinner time rolled around. I'm glad I decided to eat at the bar because that's where all the action happens! I enjoyed watching the interaction between the warm and friendly co-owner (co-owns with his sister) and the customers. The owner is originally from Jamaica and he's a U. S. Army veteran! Besides the good food, another reason to support this black-owned, veteran business! Dinners with 2 sides range between $12 to $17. Oxtails are $17. I had the $12 spicy jerk chicken with macaroni and cheese and cabbage. The jerk chicken and mac & cheese were delicious. The cabbage needed a lot more flavor. The guava punch was very good, though too sweet for my taste so I added water and it was perfect. I highly recommend this place. I will definitely go back.Check it out.

The fried chicken was crispy and fried hard just the way I like it, with plenty of flavor in every bite. The greens were seasoned perfectly, and the yams were sweet with a great texture--not too hard and not too soft. I visited on a hot summer day, and the restaurant can get pretty loud and a little stuffy when it's busy. Thankfully, they had fans placed throughout the space, which made it much more comfortable. Overall, I enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. If you're looking for good soul food and want to support a place with a meaningful mission, Whole Truth Lunchroom is worth a visit. I'd definitely go back.

A ministry of the church next door, Wilson's Whole Truth Lunchroom is a hidden gem. Located a few…read moreblocks from downtown and run by dedicated volunteers, this is an old school cafeteria with the type of food you'd expect from Southern church ladies. Dishes vary from day to day but the fried chicken, baked chicken, and fried pork chops are staples. Plates come with two sides and you can see from the photo why the blackeyed peas are so good (spoiler alert - it's bacon, lots of bacon). Collards are also delicious and the yams are mildly sweet without being cloying. The banana pudding is gloriously warm and the meringue is fluffy. The pudding is a touch too sweet and I could have done with more bananas but it was large enough to share. The staff is genuinely happy to see you and are happy to talk about their work, if you like. The room is a bit bare bones and the bathrooms are rudimentary and cramped but everything works. There is parking directly in front of the restaurant. Thanksgiving take-out is available for pre-order (see photo). I have a strong feeling you won't go wrong with any of the choices.

Parking was plentiful, with dedicated carryout parking, regular restaurant parking, and accessible spaces. The restaurant has that classic, small-town Southern Sunday dinner vibe. The carryout area is exactly what you'd expect, small and designed strictly for takeout. The cashier is friendly, and the service is pretty fast. You can order at the counter, and the menu offers plenty of mix-and-match combinations. The fried okra was crispy and delicious. The pulled pork had a nice tangy barbecue flavor. The seafood platter was surprisingly good. I would skip the candied yams next time. Everything else was decent but nothing that really stood out. One thing to note: I was hoping for ribs after seeing them advertised, but they weren't available through the carryout menu. Carryout focuses more on pulled pork and pulled turkey, while some menu items are reserved for the dine-in restaurant. If you're passing through Rocky Mount and want a quick Southern comfort food stop, I'd definitely recommend the carryout. It's convenient, the portions are good, and the barbecue hits the spot. As for dining in, I don't think I'd make a special trip .It feels more like a great roadside takeout stop than a destination restaurant.
