I am a fried chicken whisperer and I know when chicken has been double fried and old, as well as the shrimp that came from the bottom of the fryer. The last order was below the quality of Smithfield chicken therefore I have to dreadfully render a disappointment to the Smithfield restaurant in Clayton on the corner lot in front of Publix. The 1 star is for the dasher who was kind and polite.

Smithfield Chicken 'n Bar-B-Q is home cooking every day. When you enter Smithfield Chicken 'n Bar-B-Q you would think you are entering a small fast-food restaurant here in Smithfield. You step inside and see the counter where you go to order what you would like to eat. The menu is on the counter and up in front of you. There is a person at the window which will take your order, answer your questions, make recommendations and assist you in a way that will make it easy for you. There is not a long list of selections to choose from. There is a small amount to choose from. You can have a sandwich. Or maybe a plate. You can have just chicken or maybe just shredded pork. There is even a combination to try. When you order a plate you will also receive hushpuppies, coleslaw and potato salad. This is all freshly made that day. This is not from the freezer or from the week before. This is made in the evening and ready for you the following day. Smithfield will cook overnight every night for 14 hours and the pork is then hand pulled and tossed every morning. There is not the biggest selection, but the choices are fine. It is what you would like to have when you are there. And like the side dishes, everything is freshly made the day you are there. The chicken is cooked and is available for the hour. If any is left it is going to be used the next day for the homemade Brunswick Stew. And this is truly homemade right there by the cook. For us we ordered the plate combo. We had our chicken and our pork. You can have your choice of white chicken or dark chicken or boneless tenders. We had a little of each. To go with this you even have your selection of a good bbq sauce if you want. On the table is more traditional Eastern North Carolina bbq sauce including the vinegar based style that is what you would find in every home in the area. It is a taste you would not find in other states. It is from this region. It will add a flavor you will enjoy. Once you make your order, and what beverage you might want with the meal you pay the cashier. That is it. After what you order the prices are not expensive. Especially when you see what you receive. The meal is greater than the price you pay for this. We took our drinks and sat at a table to wait as they recommended. Once we settled in they brought over our meals. It was that fast. They brought everything we ordered including the special sauces we wanted to try. They provided everything and were always available if you had any questions. Once they left it was time to begin. And how do you begin.This was not a small plate. It was filled with everything you ordered and presented like we would receive if you were sitting in their kitchen at home. It was huge. The smell was first. You knew it was just made, It was fresh. It had the smell of a good fried chicken and real pork that was made that morning. It was a true bbq. It also came with everything they had mentioned that would come with it. There was the home-made coleslaw and potato salad. It was not your standard type you might expect from a deli or from another chain restaurant. This was made as they would normally make it if you were in their kitchen and learning how it is done. This was at the right temperature. Not hot. Not cold. And a taste that was the best with each bite you took. Moist. Juicy. Just the right amount of spice to make it a good compliment to the dish itself. Don't forget the hushpuppies. These are the best. I have had them before but this time it was soft and moist and sweet and perfect. It came with the meal, but I could have this alone as a dessert with tea or coffee. It was perfect with this meal. With each bite I took I never knew where to begin. Start with the chicken and then the pork. Or start with the pork and then some chicken. It did not matter. The extra bbq sauce they offered was a good match to the chicken. I put the special vinegar that was created here in Smithfield to compliment the pork. It was ideal for this meal. There is no rush to eat. You can take your time and enjoy it as you move along. Smithfield is an interesting place. You might pass by the place and stop in when you are hungry. You think it is fast and typical of a fast chain. But when you get inside you realize you are home. That is the way you are treated. That is the way you eat with what they have to offer at that time. We offer all menu items all the time, except in rare instances as mentioned before with the bbq. Whether you are hungry for lunch or dinner, Smithfield is the place to step in and enjoy home cooking. It is made like you would have if you visited someone's house. The taste is great. The choices are ideal. The price is something you can afford. And the team is like being with someone you know. Next time I am at Smithfield I already know what I will have and what I want to try. Even the leftovers the next day are great and taste well. It is the same as what you expect. Welcome home!

UPDATE: October 2024: visited this location again and didn't think it was the previous location. I believe this location has been rebuilt or remodeled. I remember it being an older building. This one was very new and updated. Anyway, food was just as good as I remember. Still got the BBQ platter with coleslaw and potato salad. Food was good but it wasn't quite as good as I wanted. It had a new, "recipe followed" taste instead of that down home, made-by-memory taste. Didn't detract from anything just something I noticed.

We might have to accept that we simply don't like the type of BBQ served around the town of Smithfield. While it may be moist, it looks like hash but grey and gamey (my husband loves hash, btw, but not this barbeque). But, you will find incredible hush puppies and the nicest service. read more

Quick service and food was reasonably priced. Fries were a little soggy. But everything else was good. Mom and I had BBQ sandwich which came with a side and drink for 6.99. Dad had BBQ combo plate. Cole slaw potato salad hush puppies. Husband had a combo platter with fried chicken and BBQ. Sweet tea is good and an employee came around the dining room offering refills. We always get the pulled pork bbq, fries, coleslaw, and chicken tenders. Everything is great for essentially a fast food restaurant. The red bbq sauce is amazing and they sell "the good ice" by the bag. It's great portions for the price. It's not a place to go if you are trying to be healthy. If you have no idea what you are ordering, I suggest heading inside and talking to the staff about options- they are always awesomely friendly! read more

It is so bad for you that it is good. I love the vinegary Eastern North Carolina Barbecue sauce doused over the pulled pork sandwiches. I live on the West Coast now, but there are times when I have a HUGE wave of homesickness hit me and I crave the hush puppies, slaw, pint of barbecue and SWEET ICED TEA. Late lunch on a Monday afternoon and the fried chicken was fresh, hot and juicy. The bbq is vinegar base with a little red pepper making it just right for my taste. The hush puppies were also fresh and hot. Everything was very tasty and served with friendly service and a brief wait for the chicken was expected to get it fresh fried. The sweet tea was good and this may be a chain but they do their menu well and make sure their customers come first in a clean friendly atmosphere. read more

At first I was not expecting much. The decor screamed of chain fast food restaurant and then when I found out they only served pulled pork and fried chicken I was ready to walk away. But we stayed and ordered and I am glad we did. The BBQ sandwich was delicious and the fries were good, tasted similar to McDonald's. The fried chicken was also delicious, with a golden crisp exterior and the perfect amount of spices. The Brunswick stew was delicious and the potato salad was just ok, although it was sweet and that is not my go to potato salad. Also had the sweet tea which was delicious and served from pitchers so you know it's fresh. The banana was fine, not a game changer buy perfectly palatable. The service was fast and friendly, our meals were out in less than 5 minutes and the manger did walk around and ask how our meals were and if we needed anything. Overall, a very pleasant experience. They also have a drive thru for those in a hurry read more

While out of town on business I try to avoid chain restaurants and eat at local places. I was very pleased with the lunch experience I had at chicken n bbq. I ordered the regular bbq platter with Brunswick stew and baked beans. The pulled pork bbq was moist and delicious. The Brunswick stew, beans and hush puppies were also very good. read more

On the way back from VA to Atlanta, my family and came across this place. The service was great and the food was amazing! Hands down, best BBQ in the area. I always stop in at least 2 times when in town for business. Service is amazing, and food is spectacular. You get a chain restaurant feeling when you walk in, but food changes your mind. Had to wait a few minutes one time for my hush puppies to be made, and they ended up giving me a dozen extra telling me how sorry they were it took so long. I was over joyed! read more

Excellent stop on our trip home to FL down 95. The service was out of this world, I would've thought I'd gone to a sit down restaurant. Our teas were never empty and anything extra we needed was brought to us immediately. Ask for the vinegar BBQ sauce, it's different than what is on the table and sooo good. The pork was moist, the bun was soft and fresh and the potato salad was delicious with a zip to it. The fried chicken was crispy, moist and hot! read more

While this place is clean and the staff is friendly, the food isn't great. All I got was a vinegar taste ---blech! I don't know if the south likes their BBQ that way, but as a Midwesterner I do not like it, at all! And when I see BBQ- I think of sauce! Not plain! So I was def. disappointed when I got my sandwich. The fried chicken wasn't bad, the baked beans were ok, as were the hush puppies, but the potato salad was just eh. Fries were decent and got a lot of them with the order. Seemed kinda pricey to me as well for a fast food joint. The only thing I might order from them again is the fried chicken -- to take home to serve with all the fixin's ---mashed potato's, noodles, etc read more

The service here is fabulous! Our food was out to the table before we even sat down. The girls kept coming and checking for refills or anything to help. They were sweet and hard working. The chicken was perfectly cooked, moist. We liked the cole slaw, potato salad and baked beans. My husband even had some fresh banana pudding for dessert! There were not any actual bananas in it, but it was still good. Coffee was FREE and delicious. There was a "complimentary coffee" sign up and they mean it! In this part of the country, many places were closed on Mondays and it was difficult to find something open. We were satisfied with our choice to stop. The place is clean and neat with nice bathrooms and a beautiful sink and mirror right on the wall in the dining room for you to use to wash your hands before/after eating chicken. The best thing they do is customer service! We were certainly impressed with that! read more

If you are going for chicken please don't eat the Bar B Q chicken, no wonder it's not on the menu. It was over 8.00 for a very small piece of chicken breast and was hard as a rock and cold. Excellent food and excellent service. You place your order and have a seat. They bring the food out to you fast and even check back to see if everything is okay or if you want soda refills. Great food and friendly service at a very reasonable price. I also noticed they clean the table as soon as anyone leaves. read more

I don't care for the taste either so next time I'll go for the fries but the chicken livers were perfectly cooked and breaded. We will definitely be back to try more!

We had lunch at this White Swan to start an early kickoff to the weekend. The restaurant was mostly full when we arrived, which we hoped meant the food was much better than the dingy interior. I tried a BBQ sandwich with slaw and an order of yams. My sandwich had a generous serving of eastern NC BBQ with slaw. The BBQ was OK, but nothing special and I would not be surprised to learn the slaw was purchased somewhere else. My yams, however, were served warm and very good. I also received a few hushpuppies which would have been excellent if they had been served hot, but they were cold. My dining companion tried the "steak sandwich" and fried squash. The "steak" turned out to be a fried chuckwagon patty which would have been better if served right out of the fryer but was OK. She thought the squash, clearly fresh and just cooked, was very good. You stand in line to place your order and as expected these days, they suggest all sorts of generous tips for themselves. All the employees were friendly and clearly aiming to please. If you eat in they bring your food to the table and if you get it to go, they call your order out when its ready. You're expected to clean your table when you leave and they are kind enough to leave a bucket with rags soaked in sanitizer to clean make sure the table is ready for the next customer, even though they already hit you up for a tip when you ordered. This is a low 3-star BBQ restaurant. It's not bad, but there's better to be had not too far away.

I didn't think anything I had (flounder, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, pie) was particularly good. I put all that in small scoops each on my plate because somehow I just knew. I thought I'd find something I'd really enjoy but no way, didn't happen. (The place was busy though so I'll give them that. I just wouldn't go back, but I am traveling through so I wouldn't have much of an opportunity to do so more than once a year really). 'Ambiance' .. none. Very wide open and very much like a church rec-room basement with tables and booths. Nothing special or enticing. Big containers of water and drinks on every table. Looked cluttered but that's not important. Table: sticky. Floor: sticky Service: Everyone we had contact with was pleasant. Price was $30+ for two.

On 12-20-23 Me and my Co-workers went to Smithsield's Chicken on Patriot Way for lunch, as we tried to have our meals it was so frustrating to continue to hear the manager constantly yelling at the workers, when they were all working and doing their jobs. Talk about a power trip! we were there 40-45 minutes, and this behavior never stopped! we would start a conversation when he would go outside, which he did quite a bit, but as soon as he'd come back in, he would start up again, so eventually this became our conservation and we decided that if our boss talked to us that way and treated us that disrespectful, we would walk off and let him have it all to himself. Kudos to the great crew there and the great food, however we will choose a better atmosphere next time. read more

I have loved this place since going through the drive-thru, at the previous location, when I was a child riding with my mother. The food had always been delicious. So I was a little questionable about the new location, if there quality of food and service would carry over. My experience has been that both are as good as ever! And I would like to highlight an employee, who's name is Elaine. She has the sweetest demeanor, and serves with the upmost kindness. I'm 76 years old, a North Carolina native and I've eaten BBQ from Murphy to Manteo!! Smithfied's is as good as any I've eaten anywhere!! Food, service and prices are excellent. Also, the food is consistent from city to city. I must have eaten at ten different locations. Prior to the Greensboro opening my wife and I would drive 60 miles round trip to the Mebane location. As a side note...anyone who calls BBQ "pulled pork" does not know what BBQ really is!! read more

Had food from the new store on 301 by Lowes' today - it really hit the spot. I'm not a big meat eater, but I was craving some fried chicken and the chicken tenders were just the thing, hot, tender and tasty. Thank you Elaine for the suggestion. No finer place for Southern fried chicken, hush puppies, and sweet tea. The barbecue's pretty good too. Always great food and always great service and I usually only go at the busiest of times - lunch or dinner on the dot. It may look and feel like a fastfood place but they'll bring tea and ask how your meal is. read more
