When I'm in the mood for fried chicken or a Carolina BBQ (saying a lot for a Yankee to like vinegar-based BBQ) sandwich at lunch, I go here. The service is fast a friendly (I don't thick ANY employee hasn't displayed a smile) and the food is ALWAYS hot and satisfying. They always meet my taste buds' expectation! What I find particularly appealing is that the coating on the chicken is flavorful, but not overpowering allowing the chicken, moist and tender, to be the star. The coleslaw is creamy and lends a Southern picnic charm to it's counterpart. I recently had there chicken tender snack with coleslaw instead of fries. This "snack" was enough for a meal! Plenty of good home-style food for a growing boy (although my growth pattern seems to be around the waist). At one time this was one of my favorite places to eat. It is pricey for fast food but they had great service AT ONE TIME. This location went down hill so fast I am in dismay at how it could have ever happened and turned me away from Smithfields for life. It started when they hired an older lady to work the register in the front. She was rude, had zero courtesy and treated each guest as if she was doing them a favor by taking their order. I wrote corporate and never received a response back. I bit my tongue and after a few weeks tried it one more time. On my last visit the food was just awful. The hush puppies, as pictured, were greasy and uncooked. The extra buy one get one "to go" as I told her was delivered by the old lady with a bag under the stews and no spoons. I asked why they weren't bagged like they had been doing for years with two spoons in the bag, her reply was simple...."the bag is there Sir so I don't see a problem.....". I had to go up to the front to retrieve spoons so I could eat the stews later. Drink refills at one time were something the clerks were great about, they would walk around and ask you if you needed a refill but not anymore....if you want it you had better go up front. When I asked for a refill, the same lady in a loud tone said to remove my top if I wanted a refill as she didn't know who had a disease now a days. Again, something I had not experienced in my 37 years on this green earth. You may think this lady had a racist point of view as I am Hawaiian/German mixed but I witnessed similar behaviour with other whites, blacks, and latino guest. The only crowd she seemed polite with were white elderly above the age of 70 +/- (or around her own age). To sum this up, you typically get what you pay for in this world with this being one of those rare exceptions. At Smithfields you get what they want you to have and nothing more. Corporate and local management do not care or respond to inquiries of poor service and appear blind to being proactive in day to day operations. I loooovvveee eastern NC BBQ (vinegar based,no red sauce!) and Smithfield's is in my top 3. They are not stingy with their portion sizes and you feel stuffed and fat as a happy pig (this is exactly how I want to feel after a good meal). The BBQ has the perfect ratio of meat, vinegar and spice- there is definitely a kick. Their hushpuppies are perfectly browned- crispy on the outside, tender on the inside with a hint of sweetness- no onions (yay!). While I did not have fries on this visit, their fries rival McDonald's, thin, hot and crispy and tender with just the right amount of salt. The fried chicken is perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of crisp but tender and juicy. When in NC, it is definitely a treat to stop at Smithfield's Chicken 'n Bar-B-Q! read more

The employees are super friendly. Smithfield's is fast food barbecue, yummy for fast food. I got the barbecue sandwich platter with fries and tea. Free refills on tea and they come around and ask you if you need anything and refill your cup. The fries are skinny and crisp. My sandwich was good with coleslaw and no fatty pieces in the barbecue. As a plus they have hot sauce and high fructose free Heinz ketchup on all the tables. For fast food and if you like barbecue and fried chicken I would recommend. The best SCNB we've been to, that says alot! The BBQ is great, the coleslaw is like Ma's, the hush puppies are classic, the potato salad is off the chain. This location is always clean and has great service. They surf the floor waiting for your drink to drop an inch before they immediately tackle you to refill, love it. The Manager I have a seen a few times is great with families and kids. He loves to draw on balloons and hand them out to kids. Only drawback I've had and the reason we do not go more often is the cost for the food. A family of four can be costly on a modest budget. read more

I would rather go to Smithfield's than to a fast food burger place, because if I'm going to eat rather unhealthy, I'd prefer it taste really good. I ordered the bar-b-q chicken (white meat), which comes with hush puppies, cole slaw and Brunswick stew. I loved all of it. When I ordered the cashier explained to me that the chicken wasn't grilled but fried, however it did not have breading on it, so it tasted like grilled. She was right. Food is barely OK. Tastes like the BBQ was cooked in a crock pot. Oft times the fries and fried chicken taste like the grease has been used too long. Service is quick but going through the drive-thru it seems like most times you have to pull up and wait for something. I've never had Smithfield's but I will be back! We had the chicken and shrimp platter and the two thighs and fries. All was delicious, crispy, fresh and hot. Love the chicken.. it's always very good! The Pork BBQ is great, too, but for my taste, I prefer simply smoked meat without the vinegar spice sauce, and occasionally they have accommodated my request, but not recently. I'm a big fan of their Potato Salad. If you get a cup of Banana Pudding, don't expect to find any actual slices of banana.. just so you're aware, (but take it home & add bananas if you miss them.)
