Place was mobbed as it is one of the few places to eat in Rocky Mount. Parking is easy. Menu is huge. Food is not great. My husband ordered meat and it was inedible. I had grilled cheese and it was served congealed. Service was slow since they were packed. Lots if takeout. Many, many locals. Go for simple thing like eggs. read more

Tried this place on the recommendation of a customer and we were not disappointed! We opted for the buffet and I ordered the country style steak & Brown gravy over mashed potatoes with green beans and greens. It was a plate FULL and everything was fresh and seasoned well. I must admit that the greens were not my favorite. They had a slightly unpleasant taste that was either bitterness from the greens themselves or maybe from bacon/lard in the base. Otherwise everything else was excellent... including the sweet tea. All of that for only $6.99 too! Cannot beat it in my humble opinion. We will definitely be back next time I am in the area and I will probably be talked into some fresh banana pudding. read more

We were told we had to try Smith's Restaurant in Rocky Mount, NC and it was an awesome recommendation. The food is good country cooking. We opted to go through their buffet line, which included a meat 2 veggies and bread. The portions are hearty and food was delicious! I got the baked chicken, which was in a lightly sweet sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, and string beans. I was quite impressed! But it was a tough choice. Their pork chops and hamburger steak with gravy also looked delicious! We also stopped at their bakery and man, it smelled so good on there! Well worth the visit! Eat here and you will not be disappointed! I'd give it 5 stars and will have to go back to try other menu items! read more

I went there on the 20th and I have to say that the service was great. I didn't have to wait that long because of so many people coming there but when i sat down my waitress asked if I wanted coffee and if i knew what i wanted. When i told her that i didn't know she gave me a menu and said to let her know when i was ready and asked if i wanted anything to drink. When i made my order it didn't take long for it to arrive and everything was good. My waitress was checking on me to make sure if i needed anything or if everything was okay and i gotta say i was impressed. I've been here before, and this experience was not great. It was pretty clear I was not one of the "in crowd / regulars." Food was just okay. Tasted like gravy and mashed potatoes came from a powder, and corn from a can. Cabbage was good, as was the hamburger steak. The biscuit was just ok...too thin. Let me preface the rest by saying I'm a 45 year old white guy. Lots like me in the place at the time. When I walked up to order my food, the two black ladies I interacted with were great. Very friendly and welcoming. So I got my plate and sat down. I guess that is when they are supposed to come and get your drink order and bring you silverware. Several ladies of varying ages (All white) walked back and forth past me, not even seeming to acknowledge my existence. After 2-3 minutes, I finally got up and walked over to an area and picked up a silverware packet. Was I supposed to do this to begin with? I wasn't sure...there weren't any signs to make things clear. Finally, Penny seemed bothered enough to come over and get my drink order. In the three interactions I had with Penny, she never smiled, made eye contact, ask me how everything was or if I needed anything else. The final time, as I was waiting for a tea refill before I left, she blurted a half-hearted, seemingly sarcastic "have a nice day." Oh, she must have been bipolar. Because two or three other tables she was joking with and having a good ol time! How dare I get in her way... As if that wasn't bad enough, when I went to check out, then young dude at the register didn't ask how things were or even offer a smile. If you are anywhere within a 20 mile radius of Rocky Mount GO HERE! We stopped for breakfast and were so glad we did! We both ordered the cheese biscuit ham sandwich with egg. The biscuits are homemade, the ham is their specialty and these sandwiches were DELICIOUS! The coffee and iced tea were fresh and yummy. Breakfast for two was ten bucks. I walked in, never been here before, when they took a breath from talking, I asked if we seated ourselves, they shook head. I went and sat down. When waitress came found out needed to be in line for buffet or could do menu. Had I walked to right instead of seating self, I would have been in line. Do not assume everyone has been here before. Bacon cooked in various degrees for everyone's choice. Fried and scrambled eggs. Red potatoes for home fries. I wasn't crazy about gravy but all else was good. Service was great. Coffee yummy! Smith's is my favorite place to have breakfast in the Rocky Mount / Nashville area. It is owned and operated by the same individuals who own and operate the well-known Smith's Grocery Store which is conveniently located next door. The restaurant is typically quite busy (and sometimes there's a wait) on weekend mornings, so I prefer to dine here during the week. You can choose your on table and then a waitress will soon greet you. The food comes out quickly and the waitresses are attentive. Their portions are large and the food is so reasonably priced! My favorite items they have are the link sausage, home fries (so so good), and a cheese biscuit. read more

Right off I-95 in Dortches, near Rocky Mount, Smith's was a completely unexpected and awesome breakfast oasis. Our family of five was heading home to DC from Topsail early on a Saturday morning and needed gas and food, so stopped spontaneously at exit 46 (?) and stumbled into Smith's. At 7:30 am, this place was already full of cheerful diners enjoying delicious southern breakfast, dished up generously from a buffet line. Homemade biscuits, eggs, bacon, grits, link sausage, fried chicken, potatoes, and more--all offered and served with genuine kindness and friendliness. Customers and staff were so welcoming, and a generous soul paid for our breakfast. Truly, southern hospitality. read more

Fantastic food, close to the highway. What a great change from the commercial chain breakfast places. Staff was overwhelmingly friendly, patient with my two small children, and the patronage was mostly locals. I really liked this country cooking, no frills restaurant. We stopped here before we went next door to grocery shop. The food was delicious-I opted for macaroni and cheese, green beans, and mashed potatoes. My friend got a pork chop, collard greens, and mashed potatoes. The food was fast, affordable, and delicious. A waitress got me a sweet tea since I didn't realize you order at the table. There's someone at the counter for carry out orders I guess but it wasn't clear when we walked in. Food was awesome. I had the beef tips on mashed potatoes with cabbage and Mac n cheese. But the wait service was awful (this excludes the kitchen ladies behind the counter, they were great) I get that they were busy, I get that they were also short staffed, but when you sit down and it takes a good 10 minutes for anyone to even notice that your table needs wiping off ( which I actually did myself using the wet rag that was tossed past my head onto the table) then it takes another 5 minutes before we even get a hello from the waitress. Then finally a drink order. It was a bad first impression and I have waitressed my fair share. I'm also not hard to please but I was about ready to walk out and leave based on my first impression of the place.
