I can't say enough nice things about Haik and his fine establishment, SMOG ZONE. Don't be lured in by false advertisements from other smog test stations with coupons offering unbelievable discounts because when you get there they'll have a half-a-dozen additional additional fees for services required by law. I know because I went to one of those places before I visited SMOG ZONE on May 16, 2014. I have a 1992 Acura Legend in very good condition with about 120,000 miles on it. I took it to a Star Certified smog-testing station that I had called prior to going. I won't name the establishment; suffice to say it is on Van Nuys Blvd. in Sherman Oaks. On the phone I was told the test would cost $29.99 if I had the coupon from the website. When I got there and handed the attendant the coupon, he told me the actual total was thirty dollars more, due to "new testing procedures" required by California law. On the phone, I was assured there would be no problem performing a smog test on a 92 Acura. The attendant, a bear of a man with a long ponytail, who mostly communicated in grunts, popped the hood, read something on the inside and stood there looking bewildered. I asked him if there was something wrong. He grunted, then went to the phone, made a call and had a ten-minute conversation with someone. I never found out whom he was conferring with. After he got off the phone, he closed the car hood and said, "Can't do it." I asked why. He told me he didn't have the necessary tool -- a 3/16 drill bit that was needed to access the timing mechanism. I'd never had a problem with the timing being checked in the past. I asked if other smog stations had the tool. He grunted, "I dunno," and shrugged. So, I left. I parked on the street and did a search for a nearby smog station on my cell phone. It was my good fortune to find SMOG ZONE and speak to Haik. I told him about my experience. He said, "I don't know what he's talking about. Bring your car right over." So I did. Haik opened the hood and showed me how the timing test is performed. As it turns out, there's NO NEED FOR ANY DRILL BITS to check the timing. The only tool necessary is something called a "timing light." It looks like a gun. It's pointed at the engine and emits a strobe light that measures the timing. It took all of five seconds. I shudder to think what the pony-tailed attendant at the other place was going to do to my car with that 3/16 drill bit. I just consider myself lucky that he didn't have one. What a relief it was to find someone like Haik, who is honest, amiable, knowledgeable about his field and willing to explain things if you have questions. A contrast in study from the smog testing facility I had just come from. Do yourself a favor and avoid an unpleasant experience. If you are anywhere in the vicinity and need to have your auto smog tested, take it to Smog Zone. You won't be disappointed. read more

I needed to get a smog check during my baby's nap (read: quickness is key!) I was going to go to another place but I know they take at least 30 minutes and the guy was kind of rude to my mom about a year ago so I decided to Yelp and was happy to find Smog Zone right around the corner from my house. I made a quick call and found out they weren't that busy and the guy asked the year of my car. I said 2007 and he said he could do it in 5 minutes. I had never heard of a 5 minute smog check but I brought it over anyway. There was another car ahead of me so I took a seat, ready to settle in for awhile. I looked up and he was done! Seriously, from the time I parked the car to the time I was out the door, ELEVEN minutes had elapsed. While he was ringing me up he told me he has a state of the art machine that can do the smog check for newer cars in under 5 minutes - it's not typical to find this machine other places. He also was so nice to give me a $10 discount (I had printed their coupon off their website but he gave it to me without knowing I had done that) so it was $50 all in including sending the info to the DMV. I can truly say this was a pleasant experience getting a smog check and I would definitely go again and refer friends and family - seriously, who has a favorite smog check place?!? I was down to the absolute wire for getting my smog test done so I could pay my registration on time. My renewal notice said I had to take the car to a "Star Station" and as luck would have it I was out of my area with not even a clue where to go. I Googled the surrounding businesses and Smog Zone instantly came up. After reading all the wonderful and encouraging reviews they already had I decided this was where I would be heading. I had no problem finding the place whatsoever and as soon as I pulled into the lot I had room to actually park my car (unlike a lot of congested car shops where you can't even get in the driveway without blocking somebody else) and there was someone there to help me and answer all my questions. The business owner, Haik, and his staff could not have been more courteous and helpful at getting everything I needed taken care of as fast as possible and I was out of there in plenty of time to pay my bill. Haik was even nice enough to give me directions to the nearest AAA office and had it not been for his specific instructions on exactly where to turn and park when there I would have been lost! I am so glad I discovered Smog Zone, I will definitely be bringing my cars here from now on when the time comes! read more

The owner Haik is very nice guy, helped me with my smog check that took about 5 mins. I've brought relatives cars here in the past and their service is great. I also did a transfer of ownership and registration here that took about 10 mins for a small fee that is worth avoiding the dmv, and even the AAA thats usually an 1 hour wait plus the drive.
