Smoke & Spice, a local southern style barbecue restaurant that serves up delicious southern eats in Windsor. Smoke & Spice has been here for years, first opened on Ottawa St., before moving to Tecumseh Rd in what used to be a Montana's restaurant, and I can see why, I came here last night with some friends to celebrate a friend's birthday and every seat was full, you'd think it'd be a chain restaurant with how popular it is, but I'm glad it isn't. When I finally got there, everyone was waiting on me to order, I quickly browsed the menu and settled on the Pig in a blanket, which was a pulled pork wrap with a sweet sauce and one side, which I got their famous Mac 'n Cheese. My friends had ordered the different platters with the pulled pork, mac 'n cheese and their famous waffle cut fries. It didn't take us long for us to order and for our food to get there. Our waitress was very nice, and quiet. She was helpful and joked around with me as I blamed everyone waiting on me as I was a bit late. The ambiance was great as everyone around was enjoying their meals, and laughing and the company was great. Tons of food, lots of leftovers, this is a great place for southern style food and mac 'n cheese. I'd definitely love to come back and bring family who lives out of town here, give them great local Windsor restaurants. read more

I'm from the South, where BBQ is practically a religion. So, when I visited Windsor, I couldn't imagine eating at Smoke & Spice Southern Barbecue and enjoying it. Still, curiosity got the best of me, and I tried it. Boy, am I glad I did. No, it's not the best BBQ place I've ever been. Not that it had much of a chance of being. I mean, come on, BBQ is an obsession of mine. So, I have eaten it all over the place. Then there's my father-in-law. He makes some of the meanest smoked pork on the planet. That being said, Smoke & Spice Southern Barbecue could hold its own with many of the places I have been. Also, the service was superb. Our server was awesome. The atmosphere was amazing. Shocked by all the 5 stars reviews. I have lived in Memphis TN. and traveled around the Southern US States and this is no 5 star Barbecue Joint. The concierge recommended this place and we drove 20 minutes to get here. It was decent but way overrated. I had the ribs, wings and pork platter. Let me add that this is dry rub Barbecue style like the famous Rendezvous restaurant in downtown Memphis (across from the famous Peabody hotel). It doesn't come close. The wings are small - pricey at 4 for $5 (as an add-on). The Pork Barbecue was decent buy drier then I would expect. The ribs were good and did fall off the bone as promised. If this was a "real" southern barbecue restaurant it would have had sweet tea, brisket plates (not just sandwiches), smoked sausages, hushpuppies and fried okra. The corn bread was overly dry. Where was the Peach Cobbler? I give the barbecue sauces a 1 star rating. The original, Chipolte and Mustard just didn't cut it. Others at the table agreed. You need a sweet sauce. Others at my table liked the Smoked Chicken and Mac N cheese. Have been told that this place gets crowded. It was a decent restaurant if you want decent barbecue food. But just don't expect Fantastic Southern Barbecue Food. The owners should visit Corky's, Griddleys, Renezvous in Memphis or Dickies in Dallas to get a better idea. This restaurant is excellent, one of the best in Windsor! I have been several times with friends and with my husband. We recently went for new years Eve dinner and it did not disappoint. The bill was reasonable too. I had the pulled pork sandwich with a side of ribs and Mac and cheese and corn bread. I also shared a side poutine because I was craving it so bad. I would say that the poutine wasn't that good, it needed more cheese curds distributed throughout it not just a few on the top. I love their sauces on the table and omg the desserts are amazing. I have had the pecan pie a few times but ordered the chocolate cream pie this time and was still thinking about it when I woke up the next day. My husband and I are just visiting Windsor from Halifax so this restaurant was on our Windsor to do list! My friend ordered the chicken and waffles and it looked amazing!! The restaurant has a nice array of smoked sauces but we forewent those as we wanted to take in the full taste of the smoke and spices on the meat. Everyone really enjoyed their choices. Ribs were tender with a tasty smoke flavour. The wings were not the tiny offerings you sometime find in other establishments. Great flavour means that I'll be ordering those during our next visit. The straight cut and waffle fries had their own unique flavouring. Everyone who hadn't ordered the waffle fries were "stealing" mine. The restaurant has a cozy feel and southern decor which made for a nice lunch experience. Portions were enough to make you feel full but not overstuffed. Definitely no room for dessert. Came here with my bro the other day. We made it for the lunch specials. He had the BLT special with a side of waffle fries and I had the 2-pc fish with a side of waffle fries. He enjoyed his burger and devoured his fries that he accompanies with Smoke and Spice's Chipotle sauce. I loved my fish and the fries and had mine with the Original sauce. A very bad experience. After ordering food for our Christmas party and paying almost $700.00 and having delivery late and items forgotten, we complained and got a $100.00 gift certificate. So, tonight we went there with a few friends to try again. And here it is: Saturday 8pm, out of pulled pork, the signature dish. Smoked chicken breast so dry that you need tons of liquid to wash it down. The beef brisket was scraped of the bottom off the pot, burnt and dry, hard, no flavour ( except for the burnt one) Anyway, not for us and that one is off the list. This use to be my fiances and I favorite restaurant in Windsor. We would come over from the states just to have dinner. We haven't been since end of last year and it really changed. First, they got rid of the chicken and waffles which was our absolute favorite. So we decided to try something different. I ordered pulled pork platter and she ordered the BBQ chicken. The pulled pork was fatty, cold & had absolutely no flavor. Luckily there sauces are pretty good and covered up the boringness of the meat. Her chicken skin was way over cooked. It was so tough you couldn't really cut it with the knife provided. The coleslaw lacked flavor. Mac & cheese wasn't bad but burnt around edges. The prices were kinda high for the amount you got also. It was $17 for the pulled pork and there was a small portion & the sides were tiny. The 3 stars represents what it was & unfortunately how it is now. A good friend of mine decided to take me to Smoke and Spice to grab a bite to eat, and for my first visit I was really pleased with the whole experience. When we arrived, there was a decent sized line in wait. We opted to grab a cocktail and wait for a spot to open up for us and within about 15 minutes we were approached by a friendly hostess and sat at a tight two top towards the corner in an already packed dining room. Even though they were slammed when we got there, the staff was friendly and inviting and the restaurant itself was bright and clean decked out in lightly stained wood and BBQ decor like the pig's tails coat racks scattered about the walls. When we ordered I can say that I had absolutely no expectations and that I was pretty hungry. The line up of four sauces that reside on each of the tables were begging to get used though. My friend ordered the Pulled Pork Sundae ($10.95) which looked delicious and filling, was priced right, and I'd guess is a huge hit amongst patrons. I got the Peckin' Pig ($14.95) which comes as a decent but not huge portion of pulled pork, a quarter of smoked chicken and two sides. I chose the cornbread and the slaw. First off the pulled pork is solid eats for sure. With the homemade sauces it's a winner hands down. I'd opt for their Original sauce, and their XXX Hot sauce was my definite favorite, I only wish it was a touch spicier. The Smoked 1/4 chicken was out of control too...tender dark meat (or white meat if you prefer) with the skin left on holding in all the smokey flavor. Lastly the slaw was really pretty good but I think next go-around I'd try another side over the cornbread which was nothing extraordinary. The waffle fries I snagged from my friend's basket were pretty stellar FYI. All in all I liked this joint. Whether you consider it authentic or not, it's just good food. I will say that their prices are on the lofty side for what came on a plate but since they've found a niche and cornered the market they'll get what they're asking, as was apparent by all the people hoovering their Q. There is a sticker on the door that says The Food Network show "You Gotta Eat Here" has filmed a segment at this place, and it lives up to the title of that show! Clearly this place was at one time a Montana's restaurant as the aesthetics are very similar to that awful chain restaurant, but the food is anything but similar because it's FANTASTIC! Tasty BBQ pulled pork, pulled chicken, pulled beef! I tried it all and loved it all... and a delicious assortment of sauces at the table, plus some kick ass wedge fries to go along with an awesome meal. Who doesn't love BBQ? I found this place to be good, I have had better BBQ but this is still pretty good and a couple of their items I tried (sampling table mates food) were really good. Besides some minor gripes about my food (not enough sauce, skimpy side portions), I was really disappointed in not having a house lemonade. In the southern U.S. they know how important and expected a tall glass of cold lemonade is while having a BBQ feast and most BBQ places, especially ones calling themselves southern BBQ pride themselves on their homemade lemonade. Came here for dinner on the way to Detroit, found this place on "You gotta eat here's" website. It was busy with a 45 min wait for tables (being saturday night), so we sat at the bar. The bar tender did a great job in explaining how the menu works and describing the variety of BBQ sauces. I ordered the ribs and wings combo (suggestion from the bar tender, since this is what they are known for). The portions looked small, but it was very filling. The wings were good, the ribs were fantastic, fall off the bone, just delicious. Both the wings and ribs were full of flavour, you could enjoy them without the bbq sauce if that is your thing, speaking of which, it was nice to have an assortment of sauces to try with the food. Great BBQ. Best I've had in Canada since moving here from Texas 7 years ago. I know my Q. There's is Memphis style which comes perfectly smoked and dry. You add the sauce that you prefer. To kill some time we visited some of the stores near by so the wait was not bad at all. This place is sure worth the wait, the food was outstanding and the waitress had great recommendations! Personally, I had the Pork Platter, which was phenomenal. The Mac and cheese and waffle fries that accompanied it were excellent, and the array of BBQ sauces perfectly complemented any dish. The smoked pulled pork is absolutely delicious, and the creamy coleslaw smothered on top is like taking a trip to the heavens. Decent BBQ but priced a bit on the high side. I had the pulled pork sandwich with waffle fries while my wife had the brisket sandwich with mac 'n cheese. The sandwiches were good but not exceptional. The waffle fries were fairly standard, although it had a lot of bits and pieces rather than being all whole fries. The mac 'n cheese was pretty tasty. There were 4 sauces on the table, and none of them were very good. The unanimous verdict was the house sauce was just bad, and we each found one of the other 3 that was tolerable but not good. Based on the quality and quantity of the food coupled with the casual ambiance, I would have expected sandwich prices to be about $2 less. Service was fairly good, especially considering we came in about 9:45 thinking they were open until 11 pm, and so we were there past their 10 pm closing. One of my favorite places to eat in town. I am a vegetarian and I still love going there because there mac is amazing. It's smoked and so good! I like to get that with Waffle fries and a Caesar salad without bacon. My boyfriend loves the ribs and the pulled pork spring rolls. The service is always quick and friendly. I've been at this location once, and at the previous location multiple times (it was on Ottawa before). At the last visit to this location, I tried the "Que" for 2, which is basically the "Pig out" for 2 people for $39. The pricing is somewhat high for the food you get, but it was a good deal in Canada (in fairness, I'm a bit biased now to pricing since I work and live in the US now). We found the pork to be a little dry, the beef brisket was specially requested ($6 extra, and was "ok"). The best part of the pile of meat were the dry rubbed chicken wings actually, which was a surprise. The food overall wasn't bad, it just wasn't "knock your socks off" bbq food. Overall the food was good, not bad, just not the type of bbq I've had in the US before, where the meet was like butter melting on your tongue. read more
