Even the bar seats have the 6 sauces at every two seats. They have the seasonal one now, which makes up the 6th sauce. It is a KC smoky sauce. The remaining sauces are still apple, sweet, spicy, NC, and SC mustard. Pro tip: lift the straw on any drinks with a salt rim For a drink to start things, I tried the tallow-rita which I found to be pretty interesting, at least on paper. It consists of smoked tallow washed tequila, gran gala, lime, honey, pineapple, a smoked sea salt rim, and brisket and dehydrated lime garnish. This sounded like a lot of effort to make. I later added an iced tea for the road. For my food I chose the 1/4lb brisket (fatty) and a side of the premium mac n cheese. I later added their famous carrot cake. Margarita - kind of disappointing since the menu states they have a brisket garnish, but the bartender says they're not doing that anymore. Geez, that was part of the reason I even ordered the drink in the first place. This drink was alright but was small and didn't wow me like I had hoped. Thus, the reason I ended up having to order the iced tea afterwards. Brisket - very thick single slice, fatty for sure. Exactly what I wanted. I tried the brisket with all 6 sauces and even went through the sauces twice just to make sure. Mac n cheese - a premium side that is $1 more. This is like a mini mac n cheese casserole. It uses shells as the pasta and sharp cheddar. Yummy! I loved the spices on this dish. Carrot cake - this was definitely moist and served with plenty of pecans I enjoyed it quite a bit. Wish they had banana pudding though! I'm also disappointed that they do have sausage but it's not available a la carte. It's only on the $59 sampler platter appetizer. Please consider making it a la carte as well!! I was thinking I'd like the spicy sauce the best, but it's not spicy and seemed more like a tomato paste to me...very strange! I ended up liking the apple sauce the best. It has the best overall taste, right consistency, and it's very neutral. The ambiance here was ok, but it was slow since I came at opening on a weekday, I can imagine it would be very different on the weekends!

This past time I got the brisket (already tossed in one of their mild sauces), fries, cornbread, and mac and cheese. Tried the Texas Twinkie breakfast burrito during brunch (asked for it without the BBQ sauce)…read more I ordered online and it did take about an hour, which wasn't provided as an estimate until after submitting my order. They said it was due to the grill being backed up, but to their credit, it was ready right when I arrived and tasted fresh. The burrito itself was really solid. The grilled cheese crust on the outside was a nice touch, but what stood out even more was the underside--it had this flaky, crispy texture that made every bite satisfying. Flavor-wise, the bacon definitely carried the dish with a great smoky taste, and you'd occasionally get a nice kick from the jalapeño. The eggs were there, but I didn't notice many had brown potatoes. The few that were in there had that slightly chewy/hard/gummy texture you get from like next-day reheated hash browns, so I'm not sure what was going on there. Fresh, crispy potatoes or even their fresh fries would have taken this to the next level. Overall though, really good burrito with great texture and strong smoky flavor--just a couple tweaks away from being excellent! Also got 5 wings to try, with Carolina Gold sauce. They were great!

2025-02-02. Sun Hong BBQ & Seafood. Windsor, ON…read more The problem with finding a place that does a dish well is that it sets the bar by which all else is compared. That's why food reviews are so subjective. They're all based on personal tastes and flavors. So, as I write this review, you may want to take it with a grain of salt. I don't frequent Windsor very often, so I don't know what the competition is like here. Maybe Sun Hong is "as good as it gets" for Windsor and other places are even worse, who knows... For Roasted BBQ meats, my favorite is still Yummy Wok BBQ (in Toronto). Their flavors are inexplicable, but I can tell you it's all in their rub and their marinade. To me Sun Hong duck wasn't even in the same league. The duck was roasted the traditional way, but it had so little flavor, it barely registered. When I asked for duck sauce, they gave me packets of Plum sauce. Wait whut? Now for many, plum sauce is what you have with duck, but I have never eaten roast duck with plum sauce. At Yummy Wok, nobody asks for plum sauce. In fact, I don't even know if they have plum sauce. When you order a duck there, they douse it with their marinade (which is 5-spice based), and let me tell you, it's the crack of duck sauces! Once you try that, you'll never go back! On the bright side, the duck at Sun Hong was not dried out. 2-stars for the proper cook. The roasted pork was a little overdone and the meat was drier that I liked. I got the piece just below the ribs. The pieces had a medium amount of fat. On the bright side the skin was crispy as it should be. The sauce with this is Hoisin, and aside from the cook, you really can't go wrong with this dish. Yummy Wok uses their signature dry rub on their roast pork, which makes it a little salty for most, but it makes up for it in flavor. Sun Hong has no such rub and their pork was barely salted. Combine this with the overcook, and I have to go 3 stars here. Lastly, I ordered some BBQ pork (aka Char Siu). This is a baked pork that is honey glazed. I asked for a leaner cut here as I wanted to use any leftovers to make a fried rice and they did a decent job in getting me some leaner pieces. Like the roast pork, the char siu was overcooked which dried it out a bit. Flavour wise, it was pretty much as expected. Again, it's five-spice based and there's little variation outside the other main ingredients. The only variable is the quantity they use to make certain flavors more prominent than others. They did cut the slices quite thick, more than I'm used to, and that added to making it a bit more tough. When overcooked, the key is to slice it thinner to make it more tender. Despite this and the overcook, this was probably their best dish. 3.5 stars. The other shocker for me was the price. 1/2 Roast Duck, 1lb of Roast Pork, and 1lb of Char Siu came to a whopping $62! Overall, if I'm being honest, this was very underwhelming for me. But keep in mind, everyone has different standards. Many people do prefer that their meats are fully cooked (I'm not one of them. I like these types of meats, just cooked -- no pink.) and many prefer it super lean (again, I'm not one of them. I like a little fat as cooking with the fat is what gives it the flavor!) Lastly, many prefer milder flavors, whereas I like mine bold and intense. My standards are most likely different from others, as are my taste preferences. The menu includes a lot of bbq options and there are several dinners for 2 that come with sides that seemed like a good value as well as offering us the chance to sample a few things from the menu. We got the bbq board which included chicken wings (crispy and flavorful) pulled pork (good flavors but a little fatty) brisket (I didn't try this as I don't like brisket) and pork ribs (my favorite by far....nice and tender). The tator tots were crispy as well as the onion rings which included a dipping sauce. Loved them both. The Mac and cheese was caramelized on top and was delicious. The corn on the cob was way too salty for me and not hot enough. My hubby liked them though. All in all one of my favorite bbq places in Windsor now. The chipotle bbq sauce was so flavorful. My favorite of the bunch. The ghost pepper bbq sauce was way too overly sweet. We even had leftovers between the two of us. I wish drink refills would've been more plentiful but I wouldn't hesitate to come here again.
