2.5 stars y'all. Alright, Friday night, dinner with the male parental. We decided on this place. Located right across the street from the Bowie Town Center, in the same area of the movie theater. It is in between the Jerry's and the Fridays. Considering the location, the time, and the day, I suppose I was expecting it to be more crowded. The service was moderate. She was attentive, but I think she may have missed a bit. I requested things that she just blame forgot. They were little things, but that at times irks me. Just listen, doh! The food was alright, I tried the spinach salad with the honey grilled salmon. I think it is a fairly new menu item that is SUPPOSED to be light regarding the whole caloric intake thing. Now it is only light if the dressing is used sparingly, read: not added to the dish. HA! So, I requested that my dressing be placed on the side, because I don't like my spinach drenched and I didn't know if I would actually like the dressing. That didn't quite happen, I believe she thought I was requesting additional dressing, because what came out was soggy spinach and a side of dressing. Sheesh! The salmon was seasoned nicely, the dressing was okay. I'd like to go back to try the other stuff, but I guess when I place my order I have to be crystal clear, super specific, well you get the idea. Had to update my review. I'd really like the food on a positive note, but the customer service is lacking at best. In the middle of a global pandemic they have suspended online ordering. Makes absolutely no sense. When I call I receive attitude or the phone rings 7 times. When I walk in there are no customers but everyone is to busy to help. I honestly wouldn't mind slower service if people were nicer. I really would if workers at least pretended they wanted to be there. Is the owner active in this business do they know what's going on? I love the food here the inside dining is spacious and the atmosphere is nice but with the customer service truly makes me want to go elsewhere. Food is good for the most part. I am a regular at the bar area however my biggest issue is that the bar easily can hold 20 people and despite their being several available workers only one person is covering the bar. Per the Smokey Bones email I received on December 16, 2020 with the subject line Let Us Handle The Cooking This Holiday Season, my husband and I had planned to order their turkey breast family feast for our holiday dinner. On 12/23/2020, I called to place the order to pick up Christmas Eve. I was told to call back on Christmas Eve which I did at 12noon. When I called, I placed the order for the holiday special to be picked up at 6pm. During the call, the server took my order and information. When I arrived at 6pm, I waited inside until a manager came to inform me that my order was not on their menu and I was at the wrong restaurant and was told there was nothing he could do for me. As a long time Smokey Bones customer and email marketing subscriber, I can assure your manager that I was not mistaken. Awful dining experience. We had about a 15 minute wait, which was fine. When we checked in, the hostess was oblivious that we were there waiting to be seated or checked in. Once seated, our waiter was friendly at first. He actually checked on us too often, which is I didn't think that was ever possible. He said that we were one of his two tables and that was why but we had to ask him to let us let him know when we were ready. We started off with drinks. Then we ordered the loaded nachos. They were actually fine and really good. After that, I ordered a Build A Burger with angus beef, a traditional bun, lettuce, red onion, smoked Gouda cheese, peppered bacon, onion tanglers, and a side of mayo. I also ordered onion rings instead of fries and a side of ranch. The burger was fine but it was not hot. It had definitely sat for a bit before coming out. They also forgot my bacon and onion tanglers. When I asked for them, our waiter took my plate back and sprinkled everything around the burger. Our waiter also forgot my side of ranch and side of maya. The onion rings were out of a bag and there was about 4 small onion rings. My friend ordered the Tomato Basil Cavatappi. She said it tasted metallic and it was not appealing to look at it. She ended up having to send it back and ordered Fish and Chips, which was out of a bag. All around us, others who were dining were sending their food back or complaining about missing items. We kept hearing the waiters, waitresses, and even the manager say they were having an off night. This place definitely is worthy of the two star rating. My two stars aren't for the food, the food was a decent 3.5 (would have been just a 3 but the chef personally bumped it up a notch). I ordered the advertised Blackberry Lemonade which comes with bourbon. I'm not a bourbon drinker so I asked if I could switch it out for vodka. He tells me that will be an up charge.....ummmm why? Since when did Makers Mark cost more then Tito's? You are already charging me for alcohol so why the up charge for the simple switch? Ok, fine, whatever, just make the drink. He makes the drink and it's leaking the total presentation of the pictured drink (presentation is everything). Excuse me, where are my blackberry garnish? His reply "O, I didn't have time to set the bar up". Sir, it's 4pm!!! The place has been open since at least 11 (they serve brunch). When will you be set up? How long does it take to put some blackberries on a stick? At this point I've lost total interest in drink but I'll finish what I have. I'll just drink water.....he can't mess that up! The only saving grace of this place was the appearance of the Chef. I don't know if he's part owner but he definitely knew every aspect of this place. He came into the bar area asking "How was everything?" I told him of my dissatisfaction with brisket I was served. The brisket was extremely lean and almost dry. He personally went to the back and brought out some totally different more to my liking brisket. I personally think the earlier brisket was from the day before and they warmed it up and dried it out. This brisket the chef brought out was piping hot, very tender and super moist. The chef gets 5 stars!! I saw this man make drinks for those sitting at the bar, take orders, make reservations and bust the counter top. Out of Towner's, staying across the street... One of 3 spots to grab a bite within walking distance... Thought it worth a shot.. not a fan. Uncomfortably warm inside. Felt humid/sticky, hopefully not dirty sticky. Surprisingly slow considering it was a quiet Monday evening. The Tito's strawberry lemonade was undrinkable. "Filet" medallions were cooked dead. Check was brought before we were asked if we wanted dessert, which we did. The Bag o' Donuts then took forever, but were good and hot when they came out. I received the absolute worst service here a couple of days ago when I called to order smoked Wings. I ended up getting fried wings and when I called back they told me they would make a note in the system and to give them my name and the next time they would replace my order. Went back today and spoke to a manager named Marcus who was beyond rude. Actually accused me of never having placed an order a couple of days ago and then asked me to leave the store. While working and staying overnight in Bowie Maryland, I decided to stop by Smokey Bones to grab some dinner before heading to my hotel. My first thought as I parked my car in their oddly empty parking lot was, "why is it so dark?". Seriously, that parking lot was not welcoming at all and honestly a little off-putting. Either way, I entered Smokey Bones and was seated right away. That was the fastest service I would receive all night. It took easily 5-8 minutes before I was even acknowledged by a server, and believe me, it wasn't busy. Like at all. She was very pleasant, and took my order. I got the pulled pork sandwich with potato wedges and a Dos Equis. The sandwich was decent. I really had no complaints about the food other than the potato wedges were like eating a quarter of a raw potato. They were not cooked all the way, so there was no softness to them, seriously it was like eating a raw potato, I was too hungry to care, not too mention I had no idea when I would see my server again. It took my server until I had eaten my entire meal to even check back on me and by that time I was ready to go. Again, she was pleasant, but even other tables by this point had begun to feel how I was feeling, even going up to the bar and asking for some service. I get it, Covid has crippled the work staff in lots of places, but again... it was Not busy. I came here on Mother's Day and was surprised that there was little to no wait time to be seated. However, we did have to wait a considerable amount of time for our food. We had one hiccup with the timelines of our food. Everyone's food came to the table except for my grandma's. She had ordered a steak. The waitress let us know that the kitchen hadn't started to cook her steak yet (after the already 30 minute wait). First and last visit. They were out of brisket and bbq chicken, when the waitress said they've been out all day it should have registered something but hunger did an override on me today. It took them 15 to seat us on what it seemed a slow night. 15 more minutes to take drink orders. 15 more minutes to take food orders, at this point we are 45 minutes in... food starts arriving 35 minutes after ordering and it's literally one plate at the time with 5 minutes in between which means by the time the last one got its plate, the first one was almost done. Food was cold, plates with sloppy presentation, sauces forgotten... IT WAS A COLD MESS!!! I asked to speak with manager twice and never cared to come to table. The icing on the cake, they were out of to go plates so they offered to give us aluminum pans (half pan) to pack our 4 wings and small potatoes. Came here with some parents and kids after a soccer game. Smoked turkey was awesome. Sides were solid, especially mac and cheese. And the cornbread in a skillet with orange (?) butter was the hit of the meal. My kid still talks about it. Service was attentive and friendly. Message I sent to the CEO. Hello, First I would like to thank you for the offer to share feedback and comments. I would like to share my experience from a covid and service perspective. Upon arrival, there was a log resting at the check in station. I immediately added my name and number, thought it was odd that the time of arrival was not important but didn't think much of it. As soon as we were seated, I headed to the rest rooms. The toilet paper was empty, and I took the last of the hand soap. When I returned to my table, I told the waitress I am celiac and cannot have gluten. I told her I have visited before, and there were a couple of things I am safe to eat. She says that would not be a problem because they have lettuce buns. I ordered a burger, lettuce, tomato, and a side of mashed potatoes. The waitress asked if I wanted gravy? I said I don't think I can have the gravy, right? She just said, oh ok. When she returned with drinks I told her I was concerned about order not being clearly communicated to the kitchen staff as gluten free. She said no to worry. I asked if I should be concerned about cross contamination. She said, "that is a good question." She returned to say the manager said the grill should be fine, but he's not sure about other areas where food is prepared. A moment later our food arrived. Chicken tenders for my daughter, a burger for my husband, and my burger with mashed potatoes & gravy all of the food, on the sides, and even the bottom of the plate. The waitress asked if I wanted to try it anyway. I said no thank you. I asked for a plain side of mashed potatoes and sliced apples. My husband and daughter was finished with their dinner before she returned with the sides. This not so great experience ended with us waiting for 15 minutes for our check while she visited with another table. When asked for the check as soon as possible. When reviewing the check for accuracy, we saw a credit for $6 and change coded as food quality. No apologies from the waitress, and a visit from the manager prior to our departure. I have visited in the past. No only do I feel as though covid is bot being taken seriously, the service and food quality are certainly on a downward spiral. It was 5 of us I went in and no one was at the hostess stand to greet me for over 15 mins finally someone comes and now they have to clean off a table for us even though the restaurant wasn't full at all. We was seated in a high bar table and the seats was uncomfortable. The server took forever to get to us we ordered and most of our order was wrong they didn't put sauce on my sister ribs. They forgot my mother sides to her entree and they messed up my whole order and gave me something totally different they came out took another 15 minutes to fix evarything and the server kept forgetting things like napkins, silverware, refills. So we came here to celebrate my moms birthday and the service was subpar. They were out of certain foods, and one of the main vegetables that they have, broccoli. The service was slow, all of the food ended up being cold, multiple times. In the end, we ended up waiting forever for our food. Our server Mel, was personable and fun. The downside to all of this is, as he was working with a party of 12, no one came to help him when it came to bringing food to the table. There were plenty of servers just standing around, so we were confused as to why no one was assisting Mel. We had a table full of food industry professionals and they were unpleasantly unsatisfied with the display of service today. I'm usually a huge fan of Smokey Bones, but today, this made me second guess coming here again. Even though the manager came to the table and tried to rectify the situation, it was his attitude that turned us off. When we asked him to remove items off of our bill, he didn't. He remade food that we said we didn't want and then tried to make us pay for it. Not once did he didn't communicate with our server to remove the items, nor did he remove them himself. He never introduced himself, he never apologized & he just seemed as if he was irritated with us instead of his team. Was staying at hotel close by. I was here on business trip. My last day decided to give this establishment a chance. Boy do I regret that. It was around 9pm.. wasn't greeted at the door. So I grabbed a seat at the bar. I kid you not, was ignored for fifteen minutes before I even got a servers attention. No menu, no greeting, no acknowledgement Here's a kicker, a Caucasian gentleman comes and grabs a seat next to me. Two servers came out of nowhere and greeted him" hello Sir how do you do"?, can I get you a menu?, are you kidding me?? They were both African American "so was I .. was I invisible? I make a six figure salary, I was dressed casual. As an African American professional. I was very disappointed.. My intention was to have a good meal , leave a large tip and get back to my hotel.... This place is so close to my house and the BBQ (not the sides) is good. But I just can't with them. I've ordered online twice. The first time I waited 20 minutes for them to give my half my order to someone else who was waiting. Then waited another 20 minutes to get the the correct order. I decided to give them another chance because everyone has a bad day once in a while. I showed up 15 minutes after my order was supposed to be ready. I waited 20 minutes for them to give me my order when they told me they hadn't started on one of the meals. So I ordered for my family through Uber eats a while ago and I got 2 orders of 1/3 rack of ribs. Ribs are my favorite bbq food so I'm kind of particular about it. Their ribs don't have a lot of meat on them and they're slightly drier than the ones Friday's makes. I used to love the smoked wings but something about the ones I ordered were a lot saltier than I remember them being before. The fire roasted corn was great and the fries were ok. Overall, the meal was ok I don't think I would order the ribs again but I'll order the smoked wings in another flavor to try it out again. read more
