    Dirty Shirley drink

Stopped by Smokey Bones for dinner on a recent Friday night. It is a large restaurant, so it was easy for two of us to get in quickly. Our waitress quickly took our drink order and food order. I kid you not, our food came out within 5 minutes of getting our drinks! I have not had such quick and attentive service in a long time! My husband and I both got a full rack of baby back ribs, which comes with two sides and garlic bread. The ribs were sticky and sweet and we definitely required the wet-naps we were provided. The sides were average and I would have preferred corn bread with bbq over garlic bread, but it was a decent dinner for the price. We both took home half of our ribs and had another meal. Compared to when we went here a few years ago, the quality has definitely improved!

    Empty grill

We ordered the 39.99 bone fire and it came out freezing cold with no charcoal no steam no nothing. We told our waitress Stacy and she said they "forgot" the charcoal and took it back and it appeared they just shoved it in the oven and brought it back out once again with no charcoal?? We ended up just putting it all on a plate because there was no reason to have the grill if there was no charcoal and our food was cold. And our table stayed dirty like the whole time she took one plate and left all our dirty plates on the table the entire time. Thankfully the manager Kaitlyn took it off the bill but still we came to celebrate a birthday and was disappointed.

My boyfriend and I always come in for the after dark specials and load up on appetizers and desserts for cheap! The food is always good and so is the bbq sauce. We come at least once a month.

So this was a pretty awful Friday night for a couple reasons. The host was nowhere to be found and showed up maybe 10-15 minutes later. They were out of practically all their sides. We ordered some burgers and they were pretty mediocre. Pretzels were so oily that you could see a sheen of it on the liner. Dirty plates everywhere and just overall quite a sad vibe. Not worth $50 of food or time.

And as I looked at what everyone else was eating (and offering me, since all of the plates were massive), I think the food was good quality as well. I ordered the poutine on the basis that I knew it would be fried cheese curds and BBQ pork (Northern NY BBQ, not Southern), so that's what I got. Not the best - all a bit too fried and dried - but I plowed my way through every cheesy bite. Perfect balance of ingredients all the way through. I also kinda destroyed an entire bottle of hot sauce in the process. The others were impressed. Other components: When you walk in, it's a bar. You walk past the bar and suddenly it's a restaurant. More than one person appeared to get lost trying to figure this out, and I think one group even turned around and left because they were looking for a restaurant and not a bar. Their loss. Other than the TVs (which I enjoyed for some live sports), the restaurant and bar don't feel like they're the same even though there's no door between them. I didn't want to drink since I hadn't yet driven to my hotel, so I can only review the restaurant and not the beer... but pretty good overall. Everyone wanted the food to go, not a bit left behind, meaning they all liked it too. Good deal.

Seemed like a very authentic hole-in-the-wall, and I will definitely be back. I had the beef soup. It was pho-like, in a huge bowl with very thin beef (but lots of it) and filled with spicy peppers. Get some water, those peppers pack a pleasant punch. I also had bbq chicken, lamb. They both were like smallish juicy skewers. The chicken was actually better than the lamb, but both were delightful. Finally I tried the BBQ squid. It was tough to describe. Firm, but not too tough or chewy. It came in a sauce that was like the chef had gone to heaven and brought back some soy sauce just for you. Overall great experience.

Order is ready within 20 min of the call, we pick it up and everything is piping hot and fresh. One order of noodles is good for 2 people, and we save the rest for the next day. There is a variety of veg in each order as well - cabbage, carrot, brocolli, mushroom, and a few others I'm probably forgetting. We opt for the shrimp instead of the seafood option because you get more shrimp and less fake crabmeat. It goes without saying that the quicker you start on the noodles, the less soggy they are (this isn't usually a problem for us). Flavor is nice and light, not excessively salty and a good taste of garlic and sesame oil. You get three skewers in one order, there's not a ton of meat on the stick but it's nicely roasted with a dusting of the chili salt seasoning that brings back memories of street food in China. My husband mainly gets it for nostalgic purposes haha - but it's a nice snack. Total comes to $26, which feeds two people two meals, so really good value. Great for a night off from cooking.

But the menu is more diverse than you might expect - along with barbecue and steaks, the regular menu includes several seafood and pasta dishes, burgers and barbecue sandwiches, wings and fried appetizers. Rancher's Choice has been on my list for a while in my search for great BBQ in CNY. Recently stopped with some friends for lunch but unfortunately, it was a let down. We had a reservation just in case, but it was 1PM on a Sunday, so we were sat immediately - 1 or 2 other tables sat. Our server was with us immediately. My wife and I ordered a 2 meat platter to share with smoked kielbasa, brisket, smoked mac & cheese and onion rings. One of our friends also ordered a platter, while the other, who's a pescatarian, went with shrimp scampi. Our food was brought relatively quickly and mostly everyone felt their dishes were just okay. Our 2 meat platter had small portions (for 2 people, maybe that's on us), all our meats were cold, a small squirt of BBQ sauce on our meats, and our smoked kielbasa and smoked mac and cheese had no smoke to them and just tasted like normal offerings anyone could have prepared. While we know most of the pricing when it comes to BBQ comes along with the labor involved in preparing it, what was served to us simply wasn't worth over $30. With only 1 or 2 other tables sat, we didn't feel there was any reason for our meats to be cold either. Our server was great, personable and attentive. Don't think we'd give it another chance.

Looking through recommendations I came across Mr. Bigg's restaurant. I am always open to try different cuisines and one for sure was Caribbean/ Jamaican when I am back home. It was definitely surprising how fast it was made and delivered but then I also noticed it was located pretty close to my hotel. I ordered the Oxtail with beans & rice, plantains, steamed cabbage and an additional side of corn bread. First bite was a delicious. The oxtails are tender fall of the bone. Great depth of flavor and texture was delicate. Plantains are nice in flavor and color, steam cabbage is steamed nicely not watery, rice was a great compliment and the corn bread was moist and sweet. Overall I appreciated the food from Mr. Bigg's restaurant. I did not have a chance to stop in around the city for restaurant due to my schedule but this was a great presentation of what the restaurant offers. Caribbean cuisine is something I do not often get but when I do, I never am disappointed. In 2022, the conversation started about what sort of a "ghost-kitchen" concept would be fun to open. After bouncing a few ideas around, they landed on 3-1-Fried, but instead of serving bone-in fried chicken, decided to focus on making fried-chicken sandwiches.  The three owners spent more than a month designing their sandwich with Kevin Harrington, the manager and cook at Limp. They incorporated a variety of spices into the flour used for the breading. They auditioned several buns before settling on a brioche. They created sandwiches with chicken breasts and some using chicken thighs. Then they figured out the toppings, and officially opened for business in April inside of the Limp Lizard in North Syracuse. I love me some fried chicken. Fried chicken, in all its forms, are one of my absolute favorite foods. I've been following 3-1-Fried since before they opened and could not wait to give them a try. Since they've opened, I'd heard nothing but good things about them, but gave it a month for the craziness to die down before I gave them a try. Yesterday was that day. Wife and I went in right at opening at noon. My wife ordered the Chucks Hot Honey, topped with pickled red onions, lettuce and hot honey, while I chose the buffalo, topped with buffalo sauce, pickles, and blue cheese. Both came with tots. Our food was made quickly, but we were unfortunately very disappointed with it. My wife and I both experienced the same thing...both sandwiches meat were rubbery, dripping with oil, and all the breading just slid right off the sandwiches. The brioche buns were good, tots were great, well cooked, crispy and very well seasoned. But what matters at a fried chicken restaurant is the fried chicken, and it did not live up to the hype. Little bit on the pricier side as well, as all sandwiches with tots are between $13 to $15 dollars. We had high hopes for the place, and it's possible they had an off day, but our two sandwiches came to over $30 and for the price, with what we were served, we would not return.
