Dinosaur BBQ was a HIT! My husband and I were visiting Syracuse for a wedding and decided to check out this restaurant. We found parking a block away, and put our names on the wait list. While we waited, we grabbed drinks at the bar. I had the spicy jalapeño marg, which was solid. For appetizers, we got the deviled eggs and a sample of the macaroni salad. The deviled eggs were so good, I was shocked. For dinner, we had catfish, brisket, turkey collard greens, mac & cheese, jerk wings, and cornbread. The greens, catfish, and wings were fantastic. I was extremely impressed. The brisket was a little tough, but that wasn't a deal breaker. We grabbed the cheesecake for dessert, and enjoyed every bite. This place earns 5 stars from me based on the deviled eggs alone. They were hands down the best deviled eggs I've ever had. As for the BBQ, the brisket was tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The ribs were good as well, slightly on the tougher side than I prefer, but still very enjoyable. My favorite meat was the pork belly; it was incredibly tender and packed with great flavor. We arrived around 5pm on a weekday and were seated immediately. We were waiting for someone else in our party, and by the time they arrived around 5:45pm the restaurant really got busy. Food came relatively quickly, and the waitress was just attentive enough that we didn't really have to look around for her, but not over-bearing. I am not a big fan of bbq, so I got fried haddock. It was so delicious! My family, who are big fans of bbq, said it was some of the best barbecue that they've had in the area. It's a little bit pricey, but overall worth it. The deviled eggs were also really tasty, and the cornbread is a sweet bread. There was a good amount of food, but I was one of the only people in my party to have leftovers to take home. My only complaint is that the mac&cheese did not have macaroni, and instead was a shell pasta (which really upset my sister haha). Meh. I picked up takeout. Maybe that was the issue. The place was hopping for sure on the dine-in side. But my experience was far from exceptional, barely normal. I ordered a brisket sandwich and fries. Simple enough. For starters, the counter worker was passive and not polite at all. Maybe that is their style for the restaurant, but it was not well received. The brisket itself tasted fine, a little over smoked but hey, it's a big restaurant doing a lot of service so I get it. The sandwich itself, was a hot mess. The bun was smashed as if it was left in a bag at the bottom of pile and who-knows-what stacked on top of it... a little smooshed and manhandled. The brisket just kinda thrown in the container... hitting probably 1/2 of the bun. And whatever toppings they decided to put on the sandwich... a serious misfire and spread (using that culinary term lightly, haha) almost everywhere except in the center of the sandwich to allow anyone to respectively pick it up to eat). The fries, well I'm not going to critique too much. They were fries. Nothing special, a little greasy (maybe check the age of your fryer oil). The bbq sauce, i didn't really specify. I was surprised i had to ask for it as an extra for a bbq place, but whatever. Not sure if I got their original, but man was it vinegary. Like... too much. It tasted like the smell of making Easter eggs. Anyway, I can only speak for takeout, and I would pass. First time visiting Dinosaur Bar-B-Que and I had high expectations. Everyone told me this is an iconic spot in Syracuse, and I was not disappointed. I was upstairs with a private event. The space is massive, could likely hold 300 people comfortably. There's even a stage space, great for karaoke or a work event. We were served buffet style and everything was INCREDIBLE. Things easily dry out on a buffet line, but not here. Everything was fresh, juicy and tender. My favorite was the pulled pork and mac and cheese. I really enjoyed coming to Dinosaur BBQ. The wait was very long (about an hour) but I feel this is to be expected since I came on a Saturday night. The inaugural one for syracuse had to be dinosaurs. Sit down or takeout the food was hot, flavorful, large enough for 2 meals and felt like I got the most bang for my buck. The tres Nino platter acts a sampling of Pulled Pork, Brisket, and Ribs. With it I got both Mac Salad and Mac N Cheese as well as a piece of corn bread. The Pulled pork was the smallest portion of the three but still worth all 3 bites. The slices of brisket were filling. The mac n cheese has always been my favorite side from them with its size and addition of BBQ seasonings its unique and never disappoints. Every summer in Syracuse, we have to have our annual meal at the Dinosaur. I first visited the Dinosaur the summer they added the bar in 1990. Back then there were no lines or wait time for a table. This year, we visited on a Sunday for lunch. Our wait was 30 minutes, we sat at the bar & had a craft cocktail. We sat in the family dining room. We continued with another strawberry jalapeño margarita (perfectly balanced) and fried green tomatoes (a family favorite). For entrees we had the sliders (two pork belly, one brisket), the tres nino entree (ribs, brisket & pulled pork), a basket of fries, coleslaw, beans & macaroni salad. My aunt and I had a little dinner date on a Wednesday night for some early dinner and this was the perfect time to go to Dinosaur! We were seated right away as the only table in the first room and by the time we left, not only the room we sat in but the entire restaurant was full and started a waiting list. I was excited to sit down and try some of their well known items since I have only ever tried their food catered. Since I wanted to try some of everything, the tres niños is the perfect menu item! I got to try the pulled pork, ribs, and prime brisket with two sides. It was all hot, flavorful, and yummy! My aunt also really enjoyed her sandwich and there was extra sauces on the table to add some more spice. Our waiter was so kind, attentive, fast, and efficient! Our meal came out super quick, which is a great part of beating the crowd as well. The front room we sat in does get a bit foggy with all the grills right next to us but that wasn't an issue. I had the chance to visit this spot while in Syracuse for a graduation. When we arrived, the wait time for a party of four was quoted at 35-40 minutes, but it ended up being closer to 25, despite the long-looking line moving fairly quickly. The place was crowded--likely due to the graduation--but I've heard it's popular year-round. Our waitress (wish I'd gotten her name!) was excellent--super attentive and helpful with menu recommendations. I ordered the 6-piece dry rub BBQ ribs with fries and crispy coleslaw. The ribs were meaty and fell off the bone, though the tangy BBQ sauce wasn't quite to my taste--I usually prefer a sweeter flavor like Sweet Baby Ray's. The coleslaw was vinegar-based, and I tend to like it sweeter, so that wasn't my favorite either. The fries were more on the softer side than crispy--perfect if you're a fan of that style--and I enjoyed them. I also tried a piece of brisket, but it was a bit salty for me--though I'm not usually a brisket fan, so others may love it. Overall, we had a great experience and everyone else at the table enjoyed their meals. I'd definitely visit again and try the catfish next time. The bbq here is typical northeast. I like the brisket and pulled pork but the ribs are the best item on the menu here. And the fries. The brisket and pulled pork are average, not something I can't do in my backyard smoker, vs some of the southern places in Texas that are in a different league. But this is Syracuse and about as good as anything in the northeast. Service was good. Not very attentive as I needed a refill and never got one. The place is loud and good for groups. My two biggest pet peeves here are the fact that they serve Pepsi products (not a deal breaker and I know Coke changed their business model to not care about the smaller chain restaurants) and my biggest issue here is parking. People have been raving about the burgers to me so I needed to try them before I moved. We went for lunch- there was still a decent amount of people but no wait. I ordered 3 sliders: bacon cheeseburgers x2 and a pulled pork sandwich. I wasn't really impressed by the burgers- I wish the meat itself had more flavor, all I could really taste was the spicy cheese. The pulled pork is always my go to and I loved that. I went to school up in Oswego so trips to Syracuse and dinosaur barbecue or the Rochester location was always a special treat. I've had weddings catered with dinosaur barbecue for God sake. It's a different place of place but it has a very casual like kind of biker bar look to it. New TVs wood stuff like that service was always good. The food was always great with good portions.
