This place is amazing from its wood smoked bbq to its waitresses. Excellent food, excellent service that can't be found at too many places these days. This was one where I disagree with the yelp consensus. This place is extremely average BBQ especially in NC. I have had a lot better BBQ. The place was packed with the after church crowd but we were seated quickly. The place itself leaves much to be desired in terms of atmosphere. One plus is the prices are pretty low but I would rather pay more for quality. We started with the fried pickles. They were really bad. Definitely needed some salt or seasoning and more breeding. They were wilty and plain. BBQ was dry and sauces were average. Best thing was the hush puppies. Potato salad was also very blah. It was definitely edible just really plain. read more

Ok, first off, any place that has a smoker shaped like a revolver is already off to a great start. The food inside is no different. I had the combo special of chopped meat and blackened catfish. The catfish was some of the best I've ever had. Amazing flavor. The BBQ meat was above average but nothing super special. The BBQ sauce itself was very good and had just enough spice. I wish i could leave a 0/5 rating. this place is horrid. Me and the wife were taking a leisurely Saturday stroll through the blue ridge mountains when we stumbled across this place and assumed we would be getting some good barbecue with the hometown experience. that was far from the case. The food was terrible, cold, and flavorless. the waitresses were mediocre. the manager was smoking a vape behind the register the whole time we were there as well. I decided to take it upon myself to wander my way to the kitchen to see what exactly was happening back there and if i had to choose between going back to Vietnam or going to that kitchen again I think I would choose the war. there was food on the floor, dirty dishes stacked to the stratosphere, and roached ravaging the corners for slightest bite of barbecue. I had seen enough. I just wanted to pay and go home. We get up there to pay and the manager was rude and condescending to the young women working the tables. -1/5 will never return and if you don't want years retracted off of your life you will do the same. read more

We went in to order a take out meal. We could see in the kitchen where food was being prepared and no one had a mask on. They were definitely closer than 6 feet apart. None of the waitresses had on a mask either. To me, this is a blatant disregard to everyone's health. We left and won't go back. read more

Sooo good! Very glad we made the stop on our drive through. We had the ribs, pulled pork, and catfish. All 3 were the best we have ever had! We loved the mix of the vinegar based sauce with the hot tomato based for our pulled pork. Also amazing were the fried pickles, fried okra, slaw, and hush puppies. Headed back home from the mountain and wanted to pick something to eat on the way out. Decide on some bbq, Unfortunately we did not have a good experience with the food. Our bbq sandwich was tasteless and very dry. The fried pickles where a disaster, I think they may have been the worst I've had they where chewy and not editable, had to throw them away. Holy-moly. Where do I even begin? How about I explain how I even ended up at a BBQ joint in Marion to begin with. My boyfriend and I had taken a weekend trip to the mountains, you see. We had in our heads that on the drive back to Charlotte we'd eat BBQ for lunch. We kept checking Yelp while on the road, hoping for a top-rated BBQ restaurant to appear. At long last (read: maybe 45 minutes into our road trip home) Smokey Que's appeared. It was 2 miles away and 6 minutes shy of opening time - yahtzee! We pull into a surprisingly busy parking lot (surprising because it was only 2 minutes past opening and there were already 3 other cars in the lot; that's a good sign!). The smell from the smoker was enough to make my mouth water. The building is a little hut-like thing, decorated with a variety of pig figurines. It's clearly an older building, but appeared to be clean and well-kept. They have tables and booths, and seemed spacious enough (although I can imagine it fills up quick during the lunch rush). Even if this place made us stand while eating, it would have been worth it. The BBQ is not the best I've ever had, but it is pretty high on the list. I ordered a BBQ platter which, as the name implies, is a platter that comes BBQ. It also comes with hush puppies, and a choice of two sides; I ordered fried squash, fried pickles, and an extra side of baked beans. If you do nothing else at Smokey Que's, try the baked beans, you will not be sorry. They were smokey in flavor, with bits of BBQ cooked in with the beans. They had a little bit of heat to them, but not too much. I've since had dreams that I am at the bottom of a pool filled with those baked beans, and I eat my way out** My boyfriend got a half rack of ribs. They were literally fall-off-the-bone; he had to eat them mostly with a fork. I'm not a fan of ribs, in general, but I did try a piece of meat and it was delicious. He had a side of slaw and fried okra, both of which were very tasty. The service was super friendly, and fast. There's not much else to say about that. My wife and I enjoy eating here. My wife likes the barbecue and I like the fried catfish. I can eat their fish because they do not serve shrimp because I 'm allergic. I do have a suggestion for the owner. If it is feasible, please update the dining area by replacing the carpet, replacing the ceiling tiles, and maybe some up to date tables and chairs. You have a great product in your food, very competent and friendly wait staff, and a sub par dining area. By the way, it's the best barbecue in town. read more

This place is great! I've eaten here 3 times now, and have been very satisfied ever time. It has the small hole-in-the wall feel, and great food to go with it. The wait staff is awesome, super friendly and helpful. The portions are huge, I can rarely eat it all. I've had the fried catfish, pulled pork plate, and bbq ribs... They were all really good. Also, they have some great sides, fried pickles, hush puppies, okra, squash etc. But I must say, I think my favorite is the fried corn nuggets... They are TOO DIE FOR! Good food good service. I had the small BBQ plate and was more than I could eat. I'm an older lady and for a younger person it may take the large plate. Asked potato was good and I ordered corn nuggets that were different but good. I will return when I'm that area. Been eating here from time to time. I tried their catfish fillet and it was delicious. My group loves their ribs. You can take the bones out really easy and the meat is so tender and they tell me it's also delicious. I don't eat ribs often but they love them. They tell me it's the best they've ever eaten. The only draw back, but doesn't keep me from going, is that the building is really out dated. I guess it's as clean as you can get the old building. It looks like it's been updated in some areas through the years. Actually they could use a new one. But if it interferes with the quality of their food I'll keep the old building. Had to try the ribs after reading a few good reviews. A little disappointed. Yes, they were moist and fall off the bone. I can sauce them up and cook them slow in an oven and get the same results. They lacked smoke and seasoning. Beans tasted like canned with extra meat added. Fries, sweet tea and service were good. Prices were good. read more

We found Smokey Que's on Yelp when we were passing through Marion on our way to the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was past our lunchtime and everyone was "hangry". We put our faith in Yelp and decided to give this place a try based on the reviews and pictures. To tell the truth, the photos of the food sealed the deal for us. The place was packed for lunch but we were seated immediately. I ordered the combo platter which came with 7 ounces of barbecue and 2 pieces of fried catfish plus hush puppies and 2 sides. My partner-in-dine got the chopped barbecue with red slaw and Mac and cheese. The others got the blackened catfish plate and the grilled chicken plate. Everything was very good. I particularly enjoyed the fried catfish. It was fresh and tender. The others also enjoyed their food. The reason I'm giving the Smokey Que's four stars is because of the slow service. My husband I ate at Smokey Que's and enjoyed it. The ribs were tender and fall of the bone with a sweet sauce that was just right. The barbecue plate was also delicious with the option of 4 different sauces. The sides we tried were coke slaw, grilled corn and fried squash and hush puppies-all were excellent. The hush puppies were large don't worry about getting only four. That's plenty!! Overall a very good and filling meal. Other options on the menu looked just as delicious. In my opinion the best barbecue in Marion, sorry Countryside. I have judged barbecue in Tryon back in the day and find to be in the same level of quality. The sauce choices are also good.
