Best BBQ I've ever had! I seen the truck by work, and I drove by their shop a few times. Yesterday I could smell the meat cooking by passing them and all the way down the road. I had to go try it out! The sauces (Spicy & Regular) are so good. The regular has a nice sweet acidic flavor. I always prefer spicy, but they're both phenomenal. The brisket he chops right in front of you, beautifully cut with a ton of flavor and a perfect crust. The burnt ends, sheesh. Yummy! The only thing is the beans I believe were on day 7 considering the date, they tasted really good still, but probably better a little more fresh. Not only is the food great, the staff/ chefs there are incredibly nice, attentive and very informative about their food. This place I will definitely recommend and continue to go to when I am craving some bbq. They keep everything very clean, organized and that's hard to see in many places anymore. No frills joint. Clean. Some indoor and outdoor seating. The pork belly burnt ends were a bit dry. The brisket was moist and good. Not sure how they store their meats but would recommend a heat lamp to keep meats warm. The peach cobbler was a perfect dessert to end the meal. read more

Finally got to eat here myself. Staff is super nice and food comes out quickly. Great change of pace from all the fast food and New Mexican food options in town. Española really needed something different and fantastic. Hope this place succeeds. They also offer brisket trimmings sold as dog treats! Ok, from the road Smokey Shack BBQ looks like a sad little dive. But the reviews were so amazing that I just had to suck it up and give it a try! Soooooo glad I did! The inside is tiny (which another reviewer described as "intimate) there were three tiny high top tables with two chairs each and a countertop place orders. But the inside was also meticulously clean! I mean spotless on both sides of the counter! The guy that took and prepared my order was polite, helpful, sweet and efficient. He mad sure I knew that the "spicier sauce" had a "considerable kick." And when I inquired what one might do with the smoked tallow (that was sold from the refrigerator next to sodas), he patiently explained that, like bacon grease, you use it to flavor beans and meat! Who knew?! Oh! And the food!!!!! The brisket and pulled pork was amazing! As good if not better than any I've ever had! The buns were really such a detraction from such exquisite bbq! So much so that I would order plates of food and skip the buns - they were very dry and not tasty. So many reviewers had commented on the potato alad that we had to try it. It as ok but needed salt and pepper to be braggable. Still . . . The meat ! The meat made up for everything! Still giving 5 stars and coming back every single time I'm in the town! Best BBQ and sides I've ever had. Really. Beautifully moist, slightly smoke flavored, thick barked brisket. Get the spicy sauce. It's Heaven. The potato salad and other sides are served in small cups. But don't you worry, it's plenty. Speaking of the potato salad. It was like a 1/2 mashed potato salad. Great texture and flavor. Note that nearly all the 5 star reviews of this place were from when the previous pit master, Avery, was working the smoker. Sounds like the jury is out on the current version of the place, and I have not been there since April. That's why I gave it 3 stars, to split the difference. I went here for the first time today. I can say without reservation that This is the best BBQ in New Mexico. I've eaten all over the state and this wins by far. The service and the prices are excellent too. The owner and his assistant are friendly and accommodating, and the location is easy to find and get to. Not much seating so it's more of a to go situation. I tried the following: - Brisket - Pulled Pork - Burnt Ends - Ribs - Smoked Turkey - Both types of sausages. (Regular and Jalapeño cheddar) Each one amazing. The burnt ends are heavy on the smoke but I like it like that. Two sauce options; spicy and sweet. I stopped here on the way to Taos from Santa Fe on a recent vacation in New Mexico and I am sure glad that I did! The meat was tender and bursting with flavor. The side of potato salad and brisket beans were also excellent and the regular bbq sauce was not too sweet which was perfect for me. My husband and I were on our 8th day of our road trip traveling from San Antonio, Texas to Roswell, NM., Colorado Springs, Cañon City, Pagosa Springs, Co., Antonito, Chama, NM, and stopped at the "Smokey Shack BBQ" restaurant in Espanola, NM. This was by far the MOST DELICIOUS meal we'd had since we started our road trip!!! We are from Texas and we know good BBQ, and we have never had BBQ this good! We had the brisket, jalapeno and cheese pork sausage and a sample of pork ribs that were all cooked to perfection and were absolutely mouth watering. The sides were full of flavor as well, and the Peach Cobbler is a must for dessert! It was all so good that we bought some to go for the road. The customer service is next to none. Owners Avery and Sarah treat everyone like family, and Avery is definitely a gifted Beef Master who someday will be famous for his recipes and techniques in preparing the BEST BBQ in the nation.
