My wife and I were passing through Beatty and stopped for dinner here on a Thursday night around 6pm. After a hot afternoon of desert driving, I was looking forward to a nice cold beer with some BBQ. The menu has lots of options but we zeroed in on the seniors special with a brisket sandwich. It comes with a side and a drink for a nice price. My wife opted for Mac and cheese while I selected the baked beans. They had a nice selection of beers in cans and bottles including a Lagunitas IPA. Our orders came out in no time on small metal trays with pickled onions and pickles. The sandwiches were yummy with a decent portion of meat. The mac and cheese was the highlight with the jalapeños giving it a little kick. For dessert, I couldn't resist their banana pudding. It was soupier than I would have liked but breaking up the nilla wafers into it helped in that department. The dining room was creatively decorated with small barrel hanging lights and large weather vane ceiling fans. Service was great and super friendly. Delish!!!! Stopped in for take away as we were camping in Beatty, NV. What a great find! The best mac n cheese I've ever had!! We stopped here for dinner on a Sunday night during a fun weekend trip to Death Valley. We arrived 35 minutes before closing time, and because the service was so fast, we were able to make it out on time! I was surprised to find one of the best BBQ spots in Beatty NV. Came up to see the small towns Museums and Cemetery and new I was going to eat before head back to Vegas so Smoking J's BBQ is where we ended up. Pull apart tender brisket was properly rendered. Homemade juicy sausage that you can tell they ground up their own meat. Ribs with a nice thick smoke ring that just fell off the bone. They add a extra ingredient to the slaw that gives it a nice welcomed sweetness and let me tell you in the many many many times I have eaten Mac N Cheese this was by far the BEST I HAVE EVER HAD. Better than any box, better than anyone's homemade, better than any BBQ places I have ever eaten at (Texas included). If there was one negative thing about it.......... There aren't many dining options in Beatty, but this spot is by far one of the best. My boyfriend and I were in town for four days, and we loved the food here so much that we came back for dinner twice. Both times, we ordered a pound of brisket to share, along with baked beans and mac and cheese. The brisket was perfectly smoked and incredibly tender, practically melting in our mouths. The baked beans were full of flavor--though, fair warning, they did leave us feeling a little gassy. And the mac and cheese? So rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious. We were staying in Beatty for our trip to Death Valley and this was easily the best restaurant! We called in an order for four people and pick-up was about 25 minutes. Service was super friendly at the counter. There's a lot of indoor and patio seating (string lights outdoors was very pretty). The ribs here were the favorite--tender and juicy, and the additional BBQ sauce was tangy. They also gave toast with the different meats so it was more filling. There's really not that many dining options in Beatty, but Smokin J's delivers quality bbq at a reasonable price that doesn't try to upcharge tourists. We came here hungry after a long day in Death Valley. They close at 8, and only does takeout after 7:45. I ordered a brisket sandwich while my partner ordered half a pound of brisket and half a pound of slow cooked pork. This was honestly a lot of food, and we had leftovers for a meal the next day. The brisket was cooked well with a distinct bark. My only complaint is that the sandwich was just two pieces of bread with brisket in the middle, which was a bit simplistic for me. I would probably stick with just ordering meat by weight next time. Service was counter service and ambiance was casual. How could we have missed this place since we'd driven through Beatty so many times? This place is absolutely the best. Burnt and cold food, avoid We arrived at just before 7.40 to be told it was take away only and that they had no chips. We wanted to eat local and the reviews seemed good, so we went ahead. Our food came almost straight away and we went back to our hotel (5 mins away) to eat. Three meals, $60, takeaway tax included. What a disappointment. Ribs were burnt and almost inedible. Pulled pork was cold and greasy. Even the beans were luke warm. We ate part of the pulled pork and a coupe of ribs, mainly due to hunger. Went back to complain but the restaurant was shut. Next morning, both of the party who ate the pulled pork were sick. Went back again to complain, still shut. Had to leave so contacted restaurant online, no reply after 4 days. Stayed a few nights on this block, have missed BBQ by a couple nights so I made sure to rush back from Death Valley on the last night to try Smokin J's. Boy was I happy. I stuffed my face with food here,while chewing, somebody yelled donkeys so I rushed out to check. Staff seemed so used to seeing these animals roaming around town but it was truly a treat for us. We enjoyed all the meats we got, they were all pretty tender and flavorful. Salad, bread, and fries were all top notch. Don't forget banana pudding! They really know their stuff and how to run their business. Beware if you arrive one minute after closing time, they WILL turn you away. Also there was a mix up with one of our orders: we wanted chicken tenders for the kids meal but was given ribs; they acknowledged the fault but wouldn't give us chicken tenders unless we pay for it! Which doesn't add up; if they're so afraid of not selling their food (In this case, the ribs they gave us mistakenly) then why would they not accommodate late comers by even a minute? It seems to me they don't fare that much about customer business. For that, I'm taking away one star. read more

Some of the best BBQ I've had anywhere. I myself have perfected backyard BBQ, so I'm a bit of snob when eating BBQ from restaurants. The mac and cheese was excellent, creamy and full of fresh cheese and tame flavorful jalapenos. I also ordered the brisket and ribs. Smokin J packed the meats nicely with some pickles, pickled red onion, and bread slices in the container. Brisket had good bark, nice smoke ring, was juicy when you squeeze it and could pull apart with ease or spring back to shape if stretched (all characteristics of a perfectly smoked prime or other high grade beef). The brisket could have used a little more rub (with corse seasonings), and if you really want your meats to be the best, call ahead and ask Smokin J when the best time is. BBQ has an ideal time window to consume after it comes out of the smoker. Typically the meat needs to rest about an hour (maybe 2 for larger cuts like brisket) then they're best when consumed within the next 2-3 hours, after that they need to be kept warm in an oven and start to loose their bark and flavor. I ordered my meal around 7-8 PM, which is typically a bad time to order BBQ at most restaurants. The ribs were perfectly smoked to be tender, but still firm enough for the meat to cling together (a lot of restaurants have trouble doing this and you either end up with a fall apart mess of meat with a bone sitting in it, or a tough rib that gets stuck between your teeth). The rub was good on the ribs and they had no BBQ sauce on them (the way BBQ should be served, so you can dip them in sauce at your discretion). They were a full cut of pork spare rib, which some people like because you get a little extra meat on the end (personally, I prefer St. Louis style where you only have one bone and no cartilage to eat around). I will definitely stop there on my next trip through the area and recommend it to anyone there or passing through. Thank you Smokin J! read more
