The best BBQ you will find around here and beyond. Friendly and hospitable staff. Always open when they say they are (which is huge round here). BYOB and several areas to sit and eat and play games. They've got tons of board games and ping pong and what not. Almost felt like a brewery experience however it felt even homey-er. One of the chefs walked outside to the pit and came back and said, "your chicken's done! Fresh off the grill!" It felt like home here. read more

Ok so we got the full rack ribs, chicken and pulled pork. Rack ribs: melted off the bone, well seasoned and went well with the sauce. Messy like a good rack should be. Pulled pork, little dry, didn't love em but seemed like they would be excellent on a sandwich. Good flavors just didn't like it straight. I mixed it with the Mac and cheese and was very pleased. Chicken: excellent flavor and texture. Solid but not stand out for me. Sides- Curly fries: typical, honestly reminded me of Arby's not stand out but solid. Mac and cheese: really creamy, my kiddos loved em, reheated well. Mashed potatoes: top notch if you like creamy potatoes. Baked beans: only get these if you like them already. Not a great baked bean honestly. So from a service perspective, they were fast but was confusing ordering experience. I ordered then was told some of my order they were out of so I gave an alternative order, I received both sets of items and also they forgot my corn bread. So they went the extra mile to get me what I initially wanted, give me the second order but also had a kerfuffle on the last item. Didn't deter me, a mistake can happen and they were very busy when I went but woeth noting, double check your order. read more

outstanding! better than the old Curtis' in Putney (RIP, he is missed). we went there on a foggy jury Sunday afternoon in mid March when no reason to be out whatsoever.; Walking in to a sufficient barbecue menu ribs, of course, and sat at the single table. I was wondering what they might have prepared on such a day, but our food was quick and delightful! OK, it's not a cloth napkin restaurant, but it is exactly what a great BBQ place should be. Family owned and operated and they know how to make the meat. Can't wait to go back again! Note: no restrooms available, but there's a Cumberland Farms just down the road. Also, there's no alcohol but they welcome BYOB. Such inconveniences become irrelevant once the meat melts off the bone and onto your tongue! they are a worthy East Coast version of my most favorite Smokin' Joes of Arkansas, will go back asap! read more

The place is a dump- why don't they clean it up? Compared to the barbecues I've had down south this was not great. Barbecue sauce was good but it should be called chopped pork and not pulled pork. The onion rings were good but the Mac and cheese was ok and the come slaw was blah. read more

We found this gem on a road trip from Albany NY to Vermont. We were literally zooming past historic landmarks but had to stop at this roadside treasure. The pulled pork was excellent, as was my coleslaw and cornbread. The nachos were spot on and my dad's burger was beautiful. Their bbq sauce was also great!! Inside the restaurant was a large table and foosball and ping-pong was available as well as a large library of books and toys. 9/10 would recommend. 5 stars. Plenty of parking and tables. read more

Delicious! I ordered the Big BBQ Dinner. It was 1/2 slab of ribs and 1/2 of a chicken. The meal came with 4 sides. I chose the mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, Mac & cheese and the greens. It's a take out place - but our food was still hot by the time we got back to our rental. There is some inside dining and some tables and chairs outside. But it is advertised as a take out place - no potties available. The sides were generous and delicious. It's not often this southern girl comes across greens prepared just right - but Smokin J's nailed it. The mashed potatoes were creamy and you could taste the sour cream they used in them. Yummy! Black eyed peas were tender and tasty - perfect bite with the greens. The Mac and cheese was creamy without being gloppy. The corn bread was tender and sweet. They included a side of their bbq sauce - perfect for dipping the chicken in. We ordered ahead online. It was ready for us when we arrived. The staff was quick and efficient. The only thing that makes me sad is that it is not located near our home! Highly recommend. read more

Gotta say, not super impressed, not super disappointed either. Real BBQ lovers will not enjoy this place, casual BBQ eaters won't mind it. I can tell there is some local people that support them and that's all well and good. Strange place though. Looks like it once was a really small and old diner. Now it's got a bunch of book shelves and board games, ping pong table, corn setup for a live band, display cool case were they keep a bunch of their ingredients, maple syrup for sale, candles for sale, random chess boards with Anya Taylor Joy in Queens Gambit photo attached to it ... I don't know what's going on here but whatever I'm here for the food. First off they don't have Brisket here. Not a deal breaker for me but its one of the few places I've ever been to that doesn't have it. But especially from a place that says it's Memphis style BBQ. I mean .. it's not like Memphis doesn't have Brisket but, whatever. Got the Ribs and Chicken combo. Ribs fell right off the bone, no pre cut, slathered, a little too greasy, had to dunk it in the sauce, sauce was sweet baby rays. Chicken was a lot of dark meat and a lot more boney than I've ever had. It was a half chicken and smokey but I don't know what was going on, little bits of bone in almost every bite. Skin was okay but I like that traditional smokey chicken rub and this was more bbq sauce style. Mac and cheese was boiled pasta and cheese goop but surprisingly not as bad as other bland mac and cheeses. I have no idea why it was better but it had some flavor to it. Like a step above Annie's mac and cheese. Bean were pretty good. Nice apple and brown sugar flavor. Regular navy beans and pulled pork but just a real nice texture and flavor. Corn Bread was warm and wrapped in tin foil. Always a good sign but actually kinda of suprising they put in that kind of love to the corn bread. The bread itself was nice and sweet and gritty. Still not what I would personally call real authentic corn bread but a great touch. Strange place, real small kitchen. Obviously run by just the family. Good sized menu. Nice little outdoor seating area but can't eat inside at the moment. Feels like they are trying to get to a comfortable spot. read more

First, if you are a BBQ snob, it's not going to be the best 'que you've ever had. It's Marlboro Vermont. But, it's solid. I stopped in the other night on my way home from a speaking gig in NY state on my way back to NH. I pulled in right as they are closing for the night, and a friendly woman invited me in anyway and said they'd make me a plate. I ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich which came with 2 sides (I got collards and black eyed peas) and cornbread. Of note, the vibe is decidedly laid back. Sort of like a Dead Show parking lot scene, in a good way. So the cornbread may not have made it into my container. That's cool, I'm doing the keto thing and wasn't planning on eating it anyway. I was also talking with the owner as she prepared my meal, so it was partly on me. That said, the pulled pork was great, with real pit flavor, not the liquid smoke or pellet taste that some pass off as authentic. The collards were some of the best I've ever had, and the black eyed peas (from the few spoonfuls I had as a treat) were basic but tasty. Cole slaw was delicious. I brought home a chocolate chip cookie for my daughter. She had a piece just a little bit ago and said it's great, but have you ever met a 4 year old who didn't like chocolate chip cookies? I'm giving them 5 stars. If I went in and judged food alone, it might have been slightly lower, but the owners are great people who value feeding those in the community. They made sure I didn't leave the parking lot hungry, and far too often in todays world, a restaurant owner wouldn't even be there at closing to say "Come on in, we'll feed you!" Swing by if you're passing through, grab a bite to eat, and share some great conversation with the family who owns it. Places like this are few and far between in todays world. read more

Tried this place when they first opened in this new location. The smoked meats were nothing to write home about. The sides came from Aldi and weren't homemade and the stuff being sold in the store was Aldi products being sold at a markup. Can't speak if things have changed but for my money I'd rather drive to Top of the Hill where I know the food is good. read more

It was just okay. Old run down building and they use about a fifth of it. Poorly lit. Even if it is clean it doesn't look it. On the positive side the staff were very friendly. The ribs were okay. The sides were just so-so. Not the best BBQ but not the worst read more

I am thrilled to see Smokin Js back! I loved their restaurant in Wilmington and have been a follower of theirs for years! The couple that own and run it are lovely people. Their new location is a market/general store, and they have a to go bbq counter when you walk in. Hopefully they can get some seating and picnic tables outside in the summer, but note, for now, it's takeout only. Their bbq is really great and they put such love and effort into their food. Their bbq chicken, ribs, pulled pork are all amazing. Their sides rock as well with baked beans with smoked pork in it, as well as bomb Mac and cheese and cornbread. It is easy to miss, but if you're driving between Brattleboro and Wilmington, be sure to be on the lookout as it is about in between both. Welcome back Smokin js!!! read more

Solid bbq in a family run business near Mount Snow. I got the pork nachos and my husband got the pulled pork with two sides. The portions are huge for the reasonable prices. Everything is fresh made to order for takeout. I wish you could eat in but I think they only have a takeout permit. I think it used to be a gift shop so the decor is set up like that but that's fine. They have some snacks, basic items and beer to go with your bbq. One stop shopping! read more

This place is the bomb-diggety for BBQ! A-maz-ing pulled pork, the Mac & cheese was fantastic and the beans....oh yum! Nothing like this for miles around. We live about 35 minutes away and will make the trip just for the pulled pork! Great prices, too. And they have a small used book area and local, handmade grafts for sale, too. Oh, and I haven't even mentioned the corn bread yet! The smoker and grill outside in the middle of winter should tell you how serious these people are about barbecue and they know their stuff. read more

First I want to say it's nice to have food back in Marlboro. The coleslaw was good. The side salad was fresh and had real bacon bits, which for me was a nice surprise. The baked beans were delicious and full of shredded pork. The right amount of sweet and tangy. The rib meat fell off the bone when I picked them up and were very good although maybe a touch dry, but nothing the bbq sauce didn't fix. The only disappointment was the corn bread. Very dry. But not a deal breaker for me. I will definitely go back and I look forward to eating the brown in a bit. read more

Excellent BBQ right on Route 9. We live around the corner and have ordered four times since they've reopened. Sides are all delicious - especially recommend the spicy green beans - and our family favorite is the full rack of ribs. Don't be put off by the modest store front and the quirky interior. These folks make really excellent BBQ! The deli operation is growing, too, but it's the BBQ that keeps me coming back. BBQ ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken.
