It's been a while since we ate at Smoky Mountain Sun Shop. We stopped in on Tuesday for lunch. We had the Italian Momma Bomb, and the Pizza Sub (a special for the week). Both subs were excellent, as usual. The restaurant wasn't busy (which was odd). It was clean and well maintained. Service was friendly (kind of), but a bit cold. For some reason our food was served in styrofoam to go boxes even though we clearly stated that we were eating in the dining room. We had to ask for napkins. We stumbled on this gem while making our way from TN to NC. There is gluten free bread for all sandwiches and vegan cheese!!!! My husband and I were so excited to order the Philly cheesesteak on gluten free. It was a smaller sandwich than a sub but they were SO generous with the meat portion. We also added grilled onions and bell peppers and I got vegan cheese on mine. The flavor was AMAZING. Better than cheesesteaks we've had in Philadelphia. We stopped here to grab some lunch after a day of hiking at the waterfalls. Such a cute little place off the main Street. We ordered a 12-inch cheese steak with provolone, mushrooms, and jalapenos and some fries. It was the perfect amount of food to share! This is a great little sub shop with made to order subs. No wonder it was voted best sub shop 2021. Plenty of options on the menu along with sides. My son im says this is new spot for a meatball sub. Take his word for it, he's on a mission for it and this place is currently winning. I had the steak and cheese sub and it was excellent! We decided to give this shop another try today. We walked in, still about an hour before close, picked up menus and started to look. Someone behind the counter looked at us and said 'Guys, we're out of a lot of stuff, so...... we might not have what you want to order.' So, why not just ask us to leave - that's how rude it came across. If you have run out of most things an hour before your supposed to close, maybe you should just close early. Staff were all very friendly. Prices are very good for the amount of food you get. The flavors are super fresh and different from other places we've been to. This place is a great sandwich place. They have several breads to choose from and condiments. You can very well customize your order. I had the turkey. It was a large amount of chopped turkey. Really hate to give a bad review but with the Covid crisis the sub shop is not doing a good job protecting their customers. Not one person working in she shop wore a mask. Customers were sitting in the restaurant waiting on orders. No masks! The subs were ok. Our order was not correct but the quality of the food was ok. Please encourage this restaurant to do better. Cooks, servers, cashiers should all be wearing masks. No social distancing picking up orders. Require masks to come in and pick up orders! We will not return because this establishment is not doing their part. read more

Friends have told us to check this place out. So we did. They have specials every month. You check out the menu in the window, or find a free-floating one that might be on a small, communal table. It states on the menu to give the number of your meal when ordering, but they have thankfully nixed that action. Just tell them want you want without numbers. The young woman at the front is very sweet and works hard. She is super. Anyway, order, then find a seat. You might have to wait for people to leave to get a seat. Do not feel bad if you are part of a couple and have to sit at a table that fits four upstairs. The downstairs is always packed. Get your water, napkins, forks, etc. at the serving area downstairs.There are napkins and a trashcan upstairs. Tables vary. There is classic dining room, and even a picnic table. Cozy corners and window seating. You can buy the antiques throughout the shop. I like the horse paintings. The prices are good, and so is the food. You can pick different breads for your sandwich. The bread is slightly toasted on the grill. The fries are salty as good fries should be, and sorta rustic. The corn chowder was excellent. However, I took one star away because they do not season their tuna salad or egg salad. Seasoning makes a big difference. Trash goes in the wooden barrel. The women's bathroom is clean. The law, both lawyers and police, frequent this shop because it is close to the courthouse. High noon is a busy time for this shop. You might want to wait a while if you like things quiet. This sub shop is not subpar. It is substantial and has my subscription*. *British definition. read more

We arrived just after 5:00pm (an hour before closing), and were immediately greeted by a friendly bald man at the counter, who explained the ordering process to us. I went with a 6-inch steak bomb on wheat, and a house salad with raspberry vinaigrette. The rib-eye was perfectly seasoned and incredibly tender. What really surprised me was the salad. I did not read the description carefully before ordering, so I did not realize that it comes with olives and raw onions. I am not a fan of either. It was nearly impossible to remove them, due to the small slices, so I went with it. For some reason (probably because of the amazing vinaigrette) it worked! Seating is somewhat uncomfortable and the place is poorly ventilated, so unless you want a sore body and to come out smelling like the greasy spoon, I suggest taking your order to go. read more

We stopped in Waynesville to break up our road trip on the 4th of July. I looked up lunch spots on my trusty Yelp app and Smoky Mountain Sub Shop came up. I called to make sure they were open first because of the holiday and luckily they were. We ordered the Steak Bomb, Cuban, and a kids pizza. My Steak Bomb had shaved ribeye,onions,peppers, mushrooms, cheddar cheese. It was freaking amazing. The ribeye was seasoned so nicely and packed with flavor. My husband had the Cuban with a side of pasta salad and it was the bomb. The pasta salad was so good with bits of crunchy carrots in it. My daughter enjoyed her cheese pizza as well. The fries were seasoned and perfect amount of crunchy. The restaurant was clean and bustling. There were two dining areas. One near the register which seemed crowded. And a space up some steps which seemed more roomy. The TV had some retro cartoons playing. And the decor was country casual. Overall I would recommend for the good food. The fries were very good, but they don't give you very many. The subs were both served as expected. The steak bomb was hot, tender and juicy. The American tasted great on the sourdough bread. Finally took the time to try this sub shop and I said to husband what took us so long! It was just delicious!!! You can take out or dine in. Dining area rustic and very appropriate to this area! When ordering you order by number, choose sub hot or cold, U choose your bread selection and you choose what veggies you want and also what cheese U want. We ordered #13, # 14. We chose the whole subs, dressing was tasty , vinegar&oil with oregano. Well I will tell you the subs were huge and had a ton of meat and veggies and the bun was toasted. There are two rooms of seating with antiques and vintage items hanging on the while, ostensibly for sale as they were priced. For ordering, it may take some time to select from the extensive menu as well as the monthly specials sub-menu. Order by number. I got the 23. The Club which was MASSIVE and luckily also delicious. They really balanced all the ingredients so that it melded into an awesome sandwich. Sides including chips and such can be purchased for extra cost though I can't imagine anyone needing more to eat than the sandwich alone. We were in and out just like we were wanting. Love this place. It is located off Main street, next door to the Sweet Onion. Food is served up cafe/deli style...order at the counter and then your order is brought to your table when ready. I like that food prep is right there for you to see, not hidden away in the back. It's a small, clean, and relaxed place. We always make a point to visit it whenever we are in town. They have a variety of subs to choose from, but my husband always orders the Philly Cheesesteak and I usually order the grilled chicken sub. Others in our group ordered the meatball and veggie sub and they were equally happy. The soups are good and made fresh. Sides like potato and macaroni salad are available as well as chips. A little on the pricey side, but considering that most of the ingredients are fresh and made to order, I'm happy to pay for it. read more
