First round of patrons are finishing up. We hang out for awhile and lots more people flood in. They all order. Their food starts coming, and more tables start eating. Tables that ordered 45+ minutes after us. We finally ask for a food update after about and hour and 15 minutes, they say it's coming and backed up. More people come in, eat, leave. One waitress finally brings the kids a snack & offers a round of drinks. Food comes two hours after ordering. The round of drinks is on the ticket & the kids are toast at this point. We wanted more all you can eat wings but the kids clearly need to leave so we ask for a few to go, get told no. Ask for a manager just to chat to see if we can get some more wings. Waitress proceeds to tell us that he is busy and if we want to talk to him we can go to the bar where he is SITTING. He doesn't come over. We pay our $120+ tab and leave. The food was good but disappointed in wait times. We know stuff happens! Offer to make it right! Come over and apologize! Don't sit at the bar and ignore us. Very disappointed. Will not return & will let our friends know there's other establishments that will value their patrons and their time.

First flag, Saturday afternoon lunch (a little of a late lunch) but no one in the place. Waitress was nice, and the menu had all day breakfast along with lunch and dinner offerings. The specials on the wall added a number of choices too. We ordered a bowl of Chicken noodle soup to share, I had the Country Fried Steak (special on the board) and my wife had a cheeseburger and onion rings. First the good, the onions rings were great and the soup was better than average. Burger was okay, with a very good bun. What was disappointing? We ordered and our waitress disappeared until the food was done. We wanted our soup first (which is the way it should be served) but we couldn't find anyone to ask for it. Of course our food came out, and then we got the soup! My meal sucked! Everything was greasy....the hash browns, the eggs and the steak. I tried, but I couldn't eat it. Even the eggs that were supposed to be "over easy" were hard. The hash browns were a gray color and for some reason buried underneath the gravy covered County Fried Steak. Only thing good about my meal was the sourdough toast! Adding to the bad meal, which was actually funny, was that the wet naps they handed out with the meal were dry as a bone! How old do wet nap packages have to be to be dried out?! Prices were reasonable, but because I left most of my meal on my plate it wasn't too great of a value. Not a place I'd go back to.

Why don't you call in sick today? Sometimes you want to go... Where everybody knows their game, and their tales are all the same. You wanna be where you can plea, "Bartender please, who's that dame?" You wanna be where everybody knows their game. You wanna drink with bucks and does, mammals mounted in a frame, You wanna be where everybody knows their game. *** Of course, I'm not singing about that famous pretend bar in Boston. I'm talking about the one and only REAL Demmith's Hunter's and Fisherman's Tavern in Lena, Wisconsin. Even though Russ Demmith has owned The Hunter's and Fisherman's Tavern since the early 2000s (Russ is a fine, friendly proprietor), growing up about 6 miles away as a youth, I always knew this establishment as Kinziger's. John Kinziger's hobby as a young man was taxidermy and throughout his life he stuffed everything. Let me repeat: He. Stuffed. Everything. The Hunter's and Fisherman's Tavern was a menagerie of Mr. Kinziger's life's work. When I first used to frequent the tavern, I don't think it was possible to see the walls or ceiling there were so many animals. Canadian geese flew overhead, bear cubs climbed a tree in the corner, ruffed grouse pecked away at a corn cob on a counter top and as many as 65 deer heads clung to the walls. Yes... 65! And no visitor back in the 80s and 90s could ever forget the giant hammerhead shark that hung near the doorway. The Hammerhead shark -- an indigenous species to the lakes of the northwoods. I say that only partly facetiously, because nobody ever REALLY knew what creatures inhabited the unknown depths of nearby Porcupine Lake. ;) When Mr. Demmith took over, he had a monumental task ahead of him. For as unique and cool as Kinziger's was, if you looked a little deeper you could see that the taxidermy was in poor shape. The once white underbellies of the Canadian geese was now a nicotine-stained brown. A gentle touch to a beaver pelt caused a clump of fur to fall out. One of a pair of glass eyeballs went rogue on a few of the critters. I'm sure just walking in the place made a state health inspector's pen run dry. Russ did a heck of job. Gone are probably at least 75% of the animals--he kept the best 25%--and the place was deeply cleaned and updated. And despite the huge reduction of inventory, The Hunter's and Fisherman's tavern retains that up-north feel and still has enough stuffed game to give those with taxidermy phobia (my sister!) sleepless nights. I'm fortunate. I get to visit Oconto County and Lena a few times a year. I don't always have time to go out when I'm there, but when I do, I go to Demmith's Hunter's and Fisherman's Tavern. P.S. -- This is my 100th Yelp review. As I've approached this milestone, I've wondered, "What Wisconsin establishment should put me into triple digits?" I can think of few places I've enjoyed longer than The Hunter's and Fisherman's Tavern, so a review for this legendary establishment seems appropriate. Furthermore, despite being in business for nearly 70 years, I've noticed this will be The Hunter's and Fisherman's Tavern's FIRST yelp review. I'm honored to be the one to write it for them.

My in-laws live just a tad bit further North than the WHSGSG. We typically are heading up to visit them after a day of work in Milwaukee. So by the time we get to Stiles, it's late, we're hungry and we haven't yet had a taste of Friday night ... if you know what I mean. ;) The WHSGSG welcomes us home at just the right time. My wife and I grab a seat at the bar and have the bartender set us up with a couple of cold Old Mil's. We then peruse the menu which is mostly an exercise in futility because we already KNOW what we are going to order: the fish sandwich. It's hard not to order the fish sandwich. It comes stacked with lightly breaded fish filets piled high within a fresh bakery roll. If you want, you can get a slab of tomato, lettuce, onions and pickles alongside your sandwich too. Which, of course, I do want. It also comes with a potato side of your choice. I opt for the fries; they're good, while my wife is a fan of the potato salad. The price of this tasty sandwich? Only $4.99!! I think it would be a good deal at nearly twice the price! You may be wondering about the name "Welcome Home Saloon/Good Stuff Grill." The place, appearing as one business, is actually two. The Good Stuff Grill operates independently within the saloon. The owner of the grill honed her cooking skills at the Waubee Lodge farther north in Lakewood. So if you live in southern Oconto County or northern Brown county and are longing for the taste of the northwoods, but don't feel like making the long drive, save some gas and head to Stiles instead. When we last visited (two nights prior to this review), the saloon had live entertainment: Schmidt Happens. After my initial chuckle over the entertainment's moniker, I was pleasantly surprised at how good this father/son duo is. The son is a multi-instrumentalist with a voice that makes me wonder what he's doing playing guitar in a bar in Stiles, Wisconsin on a Friday night. This kid's got some chops! I became endeared to him when he intro'd a song by saying "Here's one from a guy you've probably never heard of: John Hiatt." Before note one I said "Yes!" (John Hiatt's my Elvis; I've been a HUGE fan of his for over 20 years.) The younger Schmidt than nailed a pitch perfect "Have a Little Faith in Me" that my eyes watering at song's end. It was that good. Maybe Schmidt Happens won't be playing the next time we drive up north on a Friday night, but one thing's for certain: the Old Mil's will still be cold, the fish sandwich will still be hot and I'll still be looking to kick-off a good weekend at the Welcome Home Saloon/Good Stuff Grill!

I always ask them if they are planning on getting a bite to eat, and if they do, I send them to the Welcome Home. I only get one thing there: a hamburger.
