To say the least, not good! I'd rather drive to Metro Diner in Middletown, DE. I was expecting a breakfast sandwich on a bagel. The store bought bagel was in a separate container (not a real bagel). Eggs were supposed to be fried, it was scrambled hard. Hash browns were greasy. read more

Okay, I'm not sure how to put this. It's just my experience wasn't good or bad. I'm pretty sure everything was prepackaged/precooked and that usually isn't a major problem for me as long as it tastes great. But the breakfast quality was comparable to a complimentary breakfast included in a hotel stay. My bacon omelet was actually really good, but the hotcakes fell short. They were rubbery as if they were microwaved and not cooked on a grill. The biscuits tasted prepackaged/old and the grits were mushy. In addition, when I asked for cheese in my grits it was served with slice of processed cheese sitting on top of the bowl. It was very perplexing I admit. So with a little doctoring-up of my meal with salt, pepper, sugar and butter it turned out satisfactory. Positives: The diner had a good community feel and the staff were friendly. This diner will never see me again. my girlfriend and I decided to go to this diner for breakfast and I liked the energy that our server was giving us. The menu had a lot of different options to choose from, but the reason why this review is getting two stars is mainly because of the food and the atmosphere. My girlfriend ordered two pancakes with scrambled eggs with cheese, turkey bacon, and hash-browns. I ordered two french toasts with scrambled eggs turkey bacon, and sweet potato fries. Now let's start with my girlfriend's order, her eggs were watery, the bacon was overcooked, and last but not least the pancakes...... the pancakes were made like bricks. The bottom of the pancake was rubbery, and the top had a hard shell layered around it. The pancakes were so hard that her plastic utensils were getting shaved down from how hard the pancakes were. Then with my order it's just about the same thing. the eggs were wet and flavorless, the bacon was underdone, the french toast was sticky and dry and really lackluster, and my sweet potato fries had a couple pieces of hair in it. We ended up telling our waitress about the pancakes and she removed five dollars from our charge, but in total the cost came out to be 29 dollars and that was not worth the meal that we got. There were flies everywhere, spiders underneath the table, and the place smelled like it was a nursing home. After reading reviews about slow service, I was a little hesitant to stop here. However, I'm so glad that I did as they do have a decent breakfast and there is really not much in the area besides a wawa. The slow service lived up to its reputation when it came to waiting for food, but I believe that it was attributed to the busy crowd in the morning. The waitress did take our orders immediately and we got coffee right away! We were here for breakfast and I got a broccoli tomato omelette. My SO got his order of classic eggs, and our friend had french toast. Decent breakfast, I was a little disappointed in my omelette, there were more broccoli stems and limited broccoli florets. My Mom and I stopped in on our way down to the beach. We had passed our normal joint. For two breakfasts it was quite cheap...13 bucks. However, my grits were lumpy, our eggs over easy were cooked poorly, my mother's wheat toast was the whitest wheat we've ever seen!, and the biscuit was bland. This diner is right by exit 114 on Route 1 but access is a bit to the north on US-13. Parking seemed adequate but may be tight if the diner is full. I was there for a geocaching lunch event so we were in a big group. Even so, I have no idea why it was nearly half an hour before someone came around to take our orders. They could've certainly gotten the food started sooner. I ordered a BLT. I caught the server trying to upsell me to fries without disclosing that it is extra cost. While it is probably not much, in my mind, this is a big no-no. I thought the BLT was pretty good. Of course, it is a pretty simple dish so it may not be representative of the rest of their cooking. Still, this at least was good. When we received the check, we noticed that they had automatically added a 20% gratuity to the total. This is awfully presumptuous of them. Small menu for a diner, good service, comfortable setting, but food - nah. Won't go again

The food is decent diner food. Nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary. We almost never have to wait for a table beyond the host/hostess coming over to the station and seating us. The service really depends on who is working that night and how busy it is. That being said, we go here a lot when nobody can decide what they want to eat for dinner and when we don't want to go out of town for breakfast. It's definitely a place for locals - we almost never go without seeing someone else we know there and stopping for conversation. It's that kind of friendly atmosphere during the busier hours. We've had a few times when the food didn't come out right, when the breakfast buffet looked kind of tired, and things like that. But if you go to any restaurant as long as we have this one, you're bound to see things like that. My favorite thing to order is the pot roast special on Sunday nights, and if I remember correctly, they have chicken and dumplings on Fridays. The chili and the vegetable beef soup are everyday offerings, and they're really good every time! read more

A colleague and myself were driving from Dover back towards Philly and started scoping exits to grab a little food, the Smyrna exit looked promising. We pulled off the exit and turned immediately right to see this tall diner sign being hid by trees, so I took a peak at Yelp and even with the questionable reviews, decided to pull in and grab some diner food! The place is pretty large with the entry way and the main part of the restaurant looking like a true diner with a pie case at the entry and majority of the seating being in forms of booths. Around to the left you have a large dining room with different décor, potentially an addition at some point. I read several reviews regarding service being subpar and we were expecting it, especially bc it was not that busy at the time we came in, but we were pleasantly surprised as out server was attentive and pleasant. They have a pretty extensive menu featuring the diner norms with a few things specific to the region, but being from the south I opted for the country fried steak. It was topped with brown gravy, sided with two veggies and served with a basket of muffins and rolls. The food was hot and served in a timely manner. Keeping in mind that this is a diner off the highway in little Smyrna, DE, we weren't expecting mind blowing food, however we got a decent meal with a good price and comfortable service. I have lived in Delaware my entire life and most of us knows who, what, where the Smyrna Diner is. Before they moved, the Smyrna Diner was the breakfast stop for thousands of beach goers. As soon as you cross the Duck Creek and County line, the stainless steel Diner was right there waiting for families, truck drivers and locals. I am a giant Diner fan!! New Jersey has one on every corner. I love the environment, the crowd, the greasy spoon menus and the endless cup of coffee. When Smyrna built it new location, it honestly didn't look or feel like a traditional diner. But the menu was still true to its history. Breakfast to order is amazing, the buffet...eh. It's ok. Food is steamed and to stay warm and food tends to get soft. So if you are headed to the beach or Christiana Mall, get off at exit 114 on Rt 1 and enjoy some pancakes and bacon. read more

Had to hunt someone down for the check then to find out the waitress INCLUDED her tip! Asked to speak to the owner and she said the limit to where the tip is included is 7. No maple syrup available, just Smuckers "breakfast syrup" substitute. No butter either, just tiny packets of equally terrible and fake Smart Balance. How does a diner, where breakfast is so popular not have real butter and syrup? Something is just not right here. Our "adventure" at Smyrna Diner began with a cashier who wouldn't even acknowledge the fact that we had walked in the front door to be seated for lunch. She isn't the hostess, and the hostess wasn't present; so she looked at us several times, ignored us each time, and pretended we weren't actually there. Our server was unable to answer simple questions about the menu items (e.g., was the soup home-made or from a can?). She asked both of us to repeat almost every part of our orders, and even with that, mine still came to the table wrong. The check was for the wrong amount, too. As for the food itself, that wasn't too bad, actually. My Manhattan clam chowder was fairly good. Turkey club sandwich was made with real turkey, which was a nice surprise for a low-end place like this. My partner's Buffalo chicken wrap was, to use his words, spicier than spicy and very average and generic tasting. Sad to say, but given the poor service, lack of accuracy, and general quality of the food, you can do better at the local-area McDonald's (or its ilk) for MUCH lower prices. read more

Went for breakfast on 7/29. Was told if you order off menu the wait is very long. She proceeds to tell us " I just want you to know it's going to be a long wait as I don't want you to tell me about it". That should have be our red flag to So she said you should get the buffet so you can get your food now. So we get the buffet and she says how do you want your eggs I will order them for you. So I told her. We go to the buffet the food was less then desirable and I mean not good. The scrapple was saturated in oil, the pancakes well not sure how to describe them they were round that's all they had in common with a pancake. The sausage links were edible. The fruit was fresh. The gravy's such as chipped beef, and sauce were under seasoned and tasted very bland. We only went up the one time because why bother. The worst part is it cost more the anything on the menu at $15.99 per person. Way over priced for food that you should expect to get from a restaurant that has been open as long as this one. Oh remember I said she asked how I wanted my eggs well they never came out and we were there for 35 minutes. When we left our plates were more then half full and we only went up one time. Well what can I say, we were starving in the middle of nowhere. We walked in and the host didn't greet us I stead just said "table for two?" Which I thought was odd. But it got odder because our waitress also didn't greet us. Is that a Delaware thing? The food was basic diner food but a notch worse than your typical diner. We ordered coffee and because we wanted something quick we got soup and grilled cheeses sandwiches. Now it really takes a lot to mess up a grilled cheese sandwich. The cheese was the imitation of an imitation of an imitation but we were so hungry that we ate it anyways drenching it in ketchup to kill the taste of the awful fake cheese. Crowed on weekend mornings, good food but the prices are high

I cannot believe the reviews aren't higher! We stopped on our way to MD, for a late breakfast, and it was amazing. You could taste the freshness in the eggs, the grits were great, and service top notch. We even stopped again on our way home. It was earlier, so we got the buffet. Not as great as breakfast to order, the chicken and waffles was just boneless chicken fingers, I was hoping for southern fried chicken. But, still a 5 star review. read more

Its a new building, just a few months old, from what I understand, the original building burned down back in 2003. Due to it's popularity a lot of the locals go to it and sometimes in groups, I was there during a hunter's club meeting of 30-40 people. They're not open 24/7 like most diners I know. Located at the end of S Cory Lane, to get here you'll have to take exit 114 off Route 1 and it'll be on your right, but you'll need to go an extra 100 yards into the Waffle House side and drive back into it. There's a lot of parking but tough during weekends. The food is alright, but a little bland. Example would be the pasta sauce with light sauce. We had to return a deep fried chicken because it wasn't fully cooked (it was probably frozen when deep fried and not thawed out before being cooked). I'll need to revisit again soon to see if it'll get better. read more

Though I initially thought I would pull into the Waffle House next door, there were more cars parked in from the Smyrna Diner, so I went there instead. Unfortunately, as far as diners go, Smyrna Diner is not so great. The food itself is slightly below mediocre, and the dessert case looks pretty sad. The worst part of my meal is that my water glass tasted like there was still a significant amount of soap residue in the cup. I asked for a new cup, and that cup tasted even *more* soapy. The waitress never apologized, even though it's a health hazard to serve people food on dishes that still have toxic cleaning chemicals on them. Though my waitress was unfazed, I mentioned something to another server who was operating the cash register when I was leaving. She apologized and said she was not surprised by the poor service of our waitress or that the dish washer was so poor. Next time, try stopping in Waffle House instead! read more

I pulled off of Route 1 in Smyrna DE to get a bite to eat. Noticed that there were more cars at the Smyrna Diner than any other place around so that's where I stopped. The place looked very clean and it was filled with customers. We were seated right away and looked through the large menu. After a while the waitress took our order. The food took a little while but it was totally worth it. I had a sandwich with baked turkey, not some nasty cold cut. It had Swiss cheese and bacon and was served on buttered and toasted marbled rye bread. It was juicy and flavorful. Some thin cut fries were served with the sandwich. They were perfectly cooked and I enjoyed them. The service was very professional but not speedy. I think this is the kind of place where you go to have a leisurely meal with a friend of family member and relax and have a nice conversation around good food. If you are in a rush, there are chain fast food restaurants nearby. I recommend the Smyrna Diner and hope your experience is as good as mine. read more

I was looking for some good diner food for breakfast and decided to visit this establishment. We normally eat at the waffle house but wanted to give this place a try. The food came out cold, and bland, and they served me pre-cooked bacon. Which was incredibly surprising for a diner. My fiancé and I immediately drove next door to the waffle house. The waitress was pleasant and apologetic about the food and insisted we visit again but I will not be going back there. If you can screw up eggs and bacon there is no telling what else will be terrible. read more

We drove around for quite some time looking for a place to eat that wasn't a national chain. We almost pulled into the Waffle House next to the place, but we figured most diners can at least make a decent bowl of soup and a burger. It took the staff surprisingly long to seat us considering there were very few people in the place, and there were plenty of waitresses standing around. My wife ordered a bowl of vegetable soup an open face hot turkey sandwich with potatoes and I ordered a cheeseburger. The soup was described as tasting "like it's from a can" by my wife. Her mashed potatoes tasted like instant, and the turkey sandwich was fresh out of a microwave. My burger was not fresh. It was clearly a frozen hamburger patty. It was served with some potato chips dumped on the side. I asked my waitress if the burger was a frozen patty, and she confirmed that it was. Seriously, how hard is it to toss a fistful of ground beef on a grill and press it with a spatula? They did manage to pour a soda for me that tasted like actual coca cola. I can't remember the last time I was served food that was completely inedible, but it happened here, for BOTH of us. You should definitely pass this place up. It is not traditional diner food, which should at least be fresh and comforting. We had neither of these at the Smyrna Diner. There is a Waffle House next door.
