Now usually something like a salmon hoagie is not the first thing you order when vetting a new restaurant. I would usually go with the fried fish or chicken - something easy. But I felt adventurous, so I tried their signature hoagie. I set my expectations low accordingly to avoid disappointment. Let me tell you, smh... For first impressions... They killed it. The sandwich pays homage to the traditional salmon patty with parsley made at home except this version is more evolved. This is the type of recipe you get after making something over and over - adding a little of this and that. This recipe takes time. You're not gonna find this sandwich anywhere else. You can try to duplicate it at home, but expect to have that "something's missing" feeling until you go through what it took to fine tune this recipe. Time. The salmon is not canned or minced. You can tell that it's made fresh immediately. They must cut them into chunks when cooking because they break down in the sandwich, but not to a "minced" level. You get bites of chucky salmon that's just the right proportion at the right time. The sandwich is rich and the taste of garlic, cheese, parsley, etc permeate each bite. It's an instant favorite and I'm not even into sauces with cheese! The sandwich is not too wet and the sauce is not overbearing or too "rich". When I was picking up my food they showed me an example of their po boy sandwich. (From the looks of it, they added their signature style to that too as I saw shrimp AND Fish on the sandwich!) I'll definitely be back to try their other entrees and sides. I'm extremely picky when it comes to food. When you taste this sandwich, you totally understand that these woman can cook. It has added so much depth and feeling to my life. One thing that it has not improved, however, is long car rides. I don't think I need to explain more, but children (and babies in particular) are logistical nightmares. Thank God for Smyrna rest stop. Conventiently close to the highway, it offers fairly clean bathrooms, gardens, trees and a full playground. The only thing it lacks is a decent lunch option. (I think this is a state issue, DE doesn't allow fast food at state rest areas) Realistically then, this may be the best legally, most legally compliant rest area in all of Delaware, and a welcome oasis for road weary parents and babies.

The rest area appears to have originally been built to serve US-13, before DE-1 was constructed. When traveling southbound on DE-1, finding the entrance can be a little confusing. Fortunately, there is a direct ramp from the parking area back onto southbound DE-1. The grounds include gardens, picnic areas, plenty of parking, and numerous other amenities. Depending on where you park, however, it can be a fairly long walk to the restrooms. Like the somewhat confusing access from DE-1, the walk is only a minor inconvenience at an otherwise outstanding public rest area.

I booked this B&B on a whim to go see an old friend who owns a business in this town. I did a…read moresearch for B&Bs in the area, and chose this one because it was 1. 1 block away from my friend, and 2. truly seemed "lost in the era". I really can't stand B&B'd that have been too modernized. I had to call to book the reservation as the website requests a call before booking any room that is within 24-48 hours of the date requested. I did and the owner was just wonderful on the phone. I got an instant confirmation via email on my booking, and the day of arrival a quick text message confirming my arrival expectation. I was greeted at the door and Mike saw me in. Don't miss taking time to see Miss Louise, the house feline, who believes everyone is just coming to see her! Mike carried my bags up for me and showed me to Amelia's Room. A nice front room with huge poster bed. The room was so nicely decorated with touches of pink and lace. A large fireplace stood center of the main wall. A full private bath with shower. I snapped pics of the room and sent them to my daughter who promptly replied with "GET THE DOLLS OUT!" lol. If dolls creep you out, just ask Mike to remove them in advance! As mentioned, the room faced the main road and so Mike was kind enough to mention that pulling the blinds down would also require pulling the heavy drapes over to eliminate street lights penetrating. He was right! Each room is given a lock code unique to the occupant - a nice touch. The front door has a code box lock as well, very convenient. The house is amazing, and I am sure I did not see everything while there, even though I walked each of the common rooms. Each is appointed with fantastic antiques and art work. The book collection will astound you if you are a book lover like me. I spent the evening in the 3rd floor lounge, sitting on the sweetest of chaise lounges, reading, while enjoying the quiet of a book filled 1850's home! Mike texted me in the morning to let me know that he would make breakfast for me whenever I was ready. Since i was the only guest for this particular morning, I sat at the kitchen island and had the most wonderful conversation while sipping my choice of tea, juice and fruit cup as Mike made me a delicious omelet. We walked in the garden afterwards and you can see all the love he has put into this home. He does it all himself, and truly makes you feel completely at home.
