Snackbar has been my go-to happy hour for the past three years. There isn't a better atmosphere for a small group (no more than 8) in Oxford when you want to "get away" for just a few hours. Having lived in Oxford for 10 years, but now am gone, Snack Bar was not an option when I lived there but I am so glad to have gone there on my most recent visit. This is the newest addition to the Oxford food scene which is the fourth restaurant installment by award winning chef John Currence owner of City Grocery, Boure and Big Bad Breakfast. Snack Bar is a Tapas/Oyster Bar situated in the Midtown Shopping Center. Never would one think, when pulling up to the area, that once you are through the doors you find a beautiful, intimate fine dining restaurant. Meeting friends for drinks we chose to sit at the bar but the other choice is a small dining room with white table clothed tables lining black booths on dark wood. Between the group we had the Duck Confit Croque Madame, oh my goodness I'm still craving that wonderfully rich dish, oysters, Red Beans and Rice and a few other dishes. I must say that all of it was fabulous. I was a little hesitant about ordering oysters 6 hours from the coast but I watched them shuck each fresh so my fears subsided. The service was excellent, drinks kept coming and the conversation was awesome. I must say that from now on Snack Bar will be on my rotation of restaurants I MUST go to when I go back each year for a football game. For Valentine's weekend, we flew in from Baltimore to eat at all of Currence's restaurants. Friday night was Snackbar. Phil was our shuttle driver from the Inn at Ole Miss and he assured us as he dropped us off that we were in capable hands with John Currence. We arrived early as we had no idea at that point how small Oxford actually was. I am so glad we were early. We ended up getting a drink at the bar - Alex made me an amazing Old Fashioned, and I met Miss Jean. If you want to have an amazing Oxford experience - go talk sports with Miss Jean and put yourself in Alex's hands - he made me this amazing punch after my amazing Old Fashioned and I was totally sold... and this is before we even got to our table. The food was AMAZING and our server was absolutely adorable. It got back to Chef Vish that we had traveled from Baltimore and he came out of the back to say hi! I was overwhelmed and could barely spit out "it is so great to meet you" - I couldn't believe he took the time out to say hi! It was so cool. I had the chicken thighs and Brian had the beef and barley risotto. I don't usually eat a lot of greens, but I even finished the mustard greens that were on my plate, everything was so good. Brian was excited to try the local brews they offered as I was enjoying my punch from Alex. As we were leaving Miss Jean found us and introduced us to Lisa Howorth and told us we should buy her book "Flying Shoes" - I promised her the next day that we would go to Square Books and buy it. Square Books was another must see in Oxford - so I had read. We go as promised the next day and buy the book - Brian was reading the forward and said "Um, you know the author we met last night - she OWNS Square Books!' All this being said - go to Snackbar - saddle up to the bar - meet the locals and eat the amazing food - oh and have Alex make you a drink! read more

We enjoyed our time here. The service was good. We ordered oysters, swordfish, and tilefish. The swordfish was delicious. The oysters were great. I will never order tilefish again, however, because it was WAY TOO FISHY tasting. This is the second time we've been to this restaurant. Each time the service was good, but the prices are too expensive for the food. I say this probably because my husband cooks so well and I can enjoy this type of food at home and for far less money. The last time we were here, I ordered jambalaya, and it was soupy and had some sort of lentils in it. I'm used to a dryer fluffier jambalaya. Overrated and overpriced. Once again a disappointing experience at one of John Currance's restaurants in Oxford. Had a vodka martini that was hot then the shrimp boil entrée that was over spiced hot. There were about 6 medium anemic shrimp drowning in a cayenne pepper broth with a two potatoes, three slices of corn on the cob and some okra topped with one slice of toasted French bread. Not even close to the description on the menu. And the menu is small print on dark paper with low lighting it is difficult to dicipher and the wait staff were zombies. Snackbar is easily the signature restaurant in Oxford, with a James Beard Best Chef (South) in Vishwesh Bhatt. The happy hour is excellent, with discounted oysters, sandwiches, small plates, and cocktails, and more. The seasonal menus always impress, with a diverse blend of simple, yet classic dishes (steak and truffle parm frites, royal mac shrimp and cheese) and more complex and eclectic dishes with Indian and French influences. The atmosphere is bar-none, with a communal, "SnackBar" seating area in between the bar and booth sections - in ways, mirroring the growing izakaya dining trend -, oyster bar, and best-in-Oxford bar program. The bar does an excellent job at pairing wines and matching their cocktail flavors to spices and flavors found in the food. An excellent spot for a casual drink and small plate, or a date with your significant other! Definitely a worthwhile experience if stopping through town! read more

LOVED MY DINING EXPERIENCE HERE! Service: Awesome! Our server was very attentive and definitely made you feel at ease. He also gave us great food reccs! Food & Drinks: Delicious! We had the crawfish etouffee special, the steak frites, the blue point oysters on the half-shell, and a Pim's elevation to drink. Pim's Elevation is the perfectly refreshing drink to have during the hot MS summers! Steak was cooked perfectly, and the etouffee had just enough of a spicy kick! Oysters were good as well -- Perfect level of saltiness! We were told that if you wanted more bang for your buck, we should get the blue point oysters because they are slightly larger. However, we found that they were not that large at all... Hm. Price: Prices are not out-of-the-ordinary for Oxford, however, the drinks here are a little pricier than other places. BUT, I am looking forward to trying out SnackBar again during their daily happy hour!! I believe its half a dozen oysters + drink for $10 from 4-6 PM during the week? Located a bit down from Ole Miss at the end of a strip mall. Looks like a fun beach type bar from outside but the you step inside. It is transformed into a posh dining club. You enter under an intimate wooden archway to secluded booths and long tables that seat multiple guests. Business casual dress is fine. The menu was unique and up-scale. I was here a couple months ago while visiting Oxford. We came on a Friday night, but had a reservation, so we didn't have to wait. It was recommended to us by some people from the area. We had heard it was nice, but I was wondering if maybe Mississipi standards were a little different when we pulled up to its location in a strip mall. It turns out this is one of those times where you can't judge a restaurant by its storefront. It may be part of a strip mall on the outside, but it is very classy on the inside. The atmosphere is like what I would expect to see in a classic, Old South man-cave with abundant wooden decor. Maybe not for everyone, but I loved it! The french onion soup was one of the best I ever tasted and the lobster mac & cheese (which came highly recommended) did not disappoint! It's a unique dish (to me at least) and full of flavor. Portions were generous but not overly huge. The menu is a little on the pricer side - a little more expensive than somewhere like Chilis but not as expensive as a fancy steakhouse. It may not be ideal place for someone on a tight budget, but I thought the quality of the food was well worth what I paid. Service was also excellent. And the location in the strip mall as well as away from the square at least means there is always ample parking! read more

The place is much bigger and fancier on the inside than it looks from the outside. The food is good and the service very friendly and professional. The only improvement I can think of is a basket of bread and butter when customers sit down. No bread or butter is given. We asked for some bread with our food and they brought us some fresh nice bread. It would have been better had they brought it when we sat down. In all, it is a good place. Overall a good place but can be inconsistent. When they're on, they are excellent! There have a been a couple times when the food was off, though (for example, extremely salty). As overs have mentioned, a bit on the expensive side, but often excellent food. Only been here once, so this is based on that meal. Waiter recomended the pork tenderloin which I now recomend to you. It was one of the best dishes I've ever had. My wife got the lobster sliders with the truffle frites (fries) and they were great. I was looking forward to eating at the Snackbar. I was disappointed. The lighting was so dim, you could not see the food colors. I ordered the swordfish, and it came out quickly. As I took a bite off the corner, it tasted okay. The butternut squash was under the swordfish and it was okay but not very flavorful. My 2nd bite of fish changed my whole outlook... It was horrible. It tasted as if a black pepper shaker had been dumped on top of the fish. I dug around searching to see if it was only in 1 area, but it was the entire piece of the fish. I swallowed 3 bites of the fish, trying to salvage my dinner... it was useless. I was only in the restaurant for a total of 23 minutes. I will never go back. read more

Fabulous! First off- safety precautions were spot on - felt very safe with masks required, hand sanitizer spritzed on as we arrived and all employees with masks and gloves. Mr. Marchetti as host was charming and very accommodating. (And pronounced my first name right!) But that was just setting the stage as the meal was delicious! Superb bar and dinner service by Bar manager Ivy Mclellan. The drink special was a blueberry something with egg white froth - one of the drinks Ivy created - and it was the perfect thing with oysters on the half shell that were yummy starter - cold and just the right amount of salty. So good we ordered half dozen more. . We had several other small plates . French onion soup was perfectly done. Roasted squash chatta was delicious - a little heat with interesting blend of spices and ingredients. The shrimp and fava beans - also with a little kick - were delicious. Toooed off with an apple crisp that was cooked really well. Our first time in Oxford, we liked it so much, we are coming back next week on our way back home. Bravo! read more

The meal was so good, that I'm going to have a hard time going anywhere else in Oxford until I try more of the dishes. Standouts were my wife's monte cristo sandwich, made with real sourdough, country ham, gruyere, and some wonderful house made jam. The parmesan truffle fries that accompanied them were among the best I've had, and I'm not particularly a potato/french fry fan. Also great was my friend's quail. Based on the bite I had I will be ordering this next time. Add to that the best old fashioned I've EVER had and you can count me a fan. We always eat here when we come to Oxford. It's so delicious. We usually let the servers pick out what we eat. They have command of the menu. We went on a friend's suggestion (who lives in Oxford), otherwise probably wouldn't have known about it. So glad he recommended it! I got the spinach, blue cheese, walnut, peach salad and truffle fries. Both were super delicious. My husband got the lobster truffle mac & cheese. It was so rich he kind of hated himself afterwards and wished he'd gotten the small size. I did him a favor and helped him finish it. ;) The food was super delicious and well worth the price--it's a little pricey, but you get what you pay for! Service was really great, too. My daughter and I spent 4 hours here on a Saturday night in December. It was our last trip to Oxford and the entire experience at Snackbar made it absolutely unforgettable! Our server was so attentive and helpful with all of our selections, both food and beverages. We split the duck sandwich with truffle fries, truffle mac & cheese with shrimp, the shrimp tower and three different desserts. I have wanted to try this place out for awhile and I wasn't disappointed. The atmosphere is very nice, quiet and a pleasant place to have a nice dinner. The menu is simple which makes sense during this time but didn't matter. My roasted catfish was delicious along with my roasted okra, I had never had either but it was very good. Our server, Bruno was excellent and was very attentive to all our needs. He was also our bartender and I would say those were some of the best drinks I have had in Oxford. Innovative, adventurous, well-executed menu. Very good - but not excellent - service. A-/B+ draught Guinness (but still the best in town). A wider variety of French wines should be considered. Prices are above average for the area, but then so are the quality and variety of offerings. A 4-star rating has been reduced to 3 due to the presence of a sometimes screaming baby, whose thoughtless parents appeared to be amused by it. Not the sophisticated atmosphere the Currence team would seem to be striving for. More like a Shoney's in this respect. Anyone eating here can afford a baby sitter. More broadly, one wonders what this restaurant is trying to accomplish. On one hand, the chef is a four-time James Beard nominee. Attention to culinary detail is flawless. But on the other hand, the admission of such young children suggests a tin ear with regard to ambience. At the very least, staff should notify management so that such unpleasant situations are promptly remediated lest 40 other diners' experiences are ruined by one thoughtless family. In the end, Snackbar tries harder than almost all other local restaurants, but because of an identity problem, doesn't definitively distinguish itself as a fine dining establishment. It mistakenly attempts to be all things to all people. Even at Snackbar, you can be too quickly reminded that you are, still, in backwards Mississippi. read more

After traveling in from Houston- (Foodie capital of the world) its hard to expect much. But what was being served looked fantastic! Unfortunately, (even with a reservation that was made SEVERAL MONTHS IN ADVANCE) - we were never seated. We checked in- on time, confirmed our reservation was for 8:15- and by 10:15, we still weren't seated. We had been primed to be pissed with a few of their wonderful cocktails- and watched as more than 8 other groups dressed in Ol' Miss attire were seated ON TIME for their reservations. By 10:15- we'd had enough- and MISSED most of the fun in the square. The waitress was young- and trying very hard, but the hostess was a TOTAL BE-OTCH! She REALLY could have cared less about us or whether we were seated. It was obvious, she was seating her friends, and NOT the out-of-towner's in Aggie gear. My companion and I drove from Memphis one night recently to dine here. We were not disappointed. They have a great selection of original cocktails and a few local beers on tap. We dined mostly on small plates. The chicken liver pate was delicious! Boudin balls were good but don't touch the ones I've had in NOLA. We had a cheese that was wrapped in a pastry (my favorite! I love all things cheese.). We then had the charcuterie platter. Yum! To top off our dinner we decided on 2 desserts. I'm normally a big chocolate fan so we had the Funky Monkey... not so much. Skip it. But you must, just MUST order the Hazelnut Crunch Bar. Outstanding!!! Whomever came up with that deserves a high-five! Our server was good and the ambience is excellent.
