Ok, so this story starts in my 20s with the release of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (I played it on the Dreamcast, a beloved and underrated system). The game was amazing, with footage of real skateboarders doing real tricks; I was tempted to learn. Around this time I also had a friend at work who was looking to get rid of his old skateboard, so he gave it to me. Every day after work I went to the parking lot near our apartment and pushed around. I tried learning to ollie for a few weeks without much luck, and eventually my interest fizzled out. But the skateboard moved with us from home to home for over 15 years. Fast forward to the pandemic. And the Tony Hawk Remastered (video game) announcement. If there isn't time to rediscover old hobbies during a shelter-in-place, when is it ever going to happen? I dug out the skateboards again and started skating around the Arroyo School parking lot while the kids were scooting and riding their bikes. I started practicing ollies in the garage (YouTube has gotten a lot better since the last time I tried to learn). And I saw a neighborhood friend cruising by on his new longboard from Society. The kids have shown some interest as well, carefully stepping on and off of the board. On Saturday I went to the store. Masks are required in the store, and only 8 customers are allowed at a time. A customer was already at the assembly counter, so Michael listened carefully to what I was looking for and brought over a few components for me to look at. He helped me to figure out that my current board is probably too narrow and patiently laid out options for trucks, wheels, and bearings. I grabbed a new helmet and a smaller pre-assembled board for the kids as well. After I paid, Michael carefully assembled my new board. I was really happy with the friendly and knowledgable service, and everyone else in the shop was really nice as well. I'm excited to come back! I've got some discounts through the customer loyalty program to spend. Today we went to the Stanford campus to skate (both inline skates and skateboards); we were there for nearly five hours (lots of breaks and some time to eat our sandwiches). It was a joy to ride around the wide hallways with their smooth concrete floors, and I was so excited to see my daughter and her friend enjoy their first experiences skateboarding. Hoping that this time, I'm able to finish learning how to ollie. I've got YouTube...and also my kids, who are fearless on wheels and could probably learn something from seeing their dad struggle to learn something new. read more

My eight-year-old nephew asked for a skateboard for Christmas and I wanted to give him one that was of high quality. I did my research and decided that it's best to go to a skateboard shop (as opposed to purchasing online or at Target). I decided to check out Society and I'm glad I did. The staff were friendly, attentive, and helpful. The store is clean and well organized. Plus, the merchandise is fairly priced. My nephew wanted a board that was either all black or all white, but they didn't have either, so I opted for the closest thing possible. However, I couldn't resist adding some color when I saw the cool graphics on the grip tapes they had available. Once I had picked out what I wanted (board, grip tape, hardware, and wheels), they assembled the skateboard. They were also kind enough to find a box for me, so I could wrap it up. My nephew loves his new skateboard. Overall, I had a great experience and I would highly recommend checking out Society for your skateboard needs. read more

Totally smashed all expectations. Went out of their way to help me get the right wheels on these ancient quad roller skates. (Roller skate wheels and anything quad skates are all in stupid high demand rn.) The wheels are perfect for my skates. I was intent on diy the whole way and had to come back and get new bearings as the ones in these old skates were pretty well shot. After removing and cleaning the old ones and being discouraged they helped me get the bearings in properly and then even later adjusting the fit as my truck stems are a bit short. I loved going to their skate camps as a kid but when the store manager at the San Carlos location told me to "F***king go sit over there" while he searched laws on redeeming a gift card under $10.00 for cash they LOST A LONG-TIME CUSTOMER. Working in retail for three years, I am familiar with this law and the manager's refusal to give me $5.62 was a true testament to their failure to provide quality customer service. It was a very demeaning experience and I always try to be polite and understanding at retail shops, especially after working in one. read more

They have an amazing selection of boards as well as some rare gems from smaller board manufactures. If you're looking to get a fresh new board or even learn to skate they've got you covered. The instructors are some of the best skaters in the area and I see them at the local parks all the time. My son needed a new helmet for his scooter, and I decided to try Society to get him properly fitted. The staff here is very helpful - my kid had them hopping to find him just the right one. I liked their selection, and my son eventually picked a simple helmet that is comfortable and he actually wears. When my youngest daughter (the mini shredder) wanted a new skateboard this summer, I was slightly dreading the prospect of finding a new one. When we had previously gone to a skate shop (Skateworks) a few years ago to buy her first board, it was not what you'd call appropriate for an eight-year-old girl: We were surrounded by posters of skantily clad women, profanity and rude symbology everywhere, and even some rude behavior by the staff. (It upset her more than it did me.) So for this trip I chose Society in San Carlos. It was a good call. The store was clean, professional, organized and the staff were friendly and mature. They certainly knew their stuff. After chatting with me and my daughter, they picked out the perfect, new board. Nothing super fancy; No big up-sell. Just a basic board that was a little higher quality than the one she had been using - a good learning board that will last a while. They've got some really nice clothing and shoes here too. I'm not a skateboarder or snowboarder, but they had a lot of stuff that caught my eye. My daughter had to drag me out before I started trying shirts on for size. read more

Definitely a cool shop, unfortunately I wish they had more snowboard type gear but hey, they've decided to focus on skate only. Which is fine though they somehow inherited Core Boadshops old mailing list otherwise I'd never have known about this place. Came in unfortunately the day before the Grand Opening and missed all the free shwag but I did get to look at some nice Four Star jackets as a possible fill for the spring snowboarding season (yes I'm looking that far ahead). The people are genuinely helpful and pleasant to deal with. Hopefully as time passes their inventory will grow a bit and encompasses a few more things that I'll be looking for. read more

I was at the Beresford skate park and saw a table with a Society banner. Someone was having a skate party and Society came out with an instructor for a small group of boys. I immediately found this store in San Carlos and was impressed. The store has lots of skate apparel and skater equipment. My son is only 5 but cool place for my older nephews and godson. I found out about this store about a year ago and since then, without even noticing, my entire wardrobe from head to toe switched to their clothing. I've been looking for my first longboard to ride with before arriving to this place. After doing some research, I've had a good idea on what kind of board I wanted. When I arrived to this place, they were nice to introduce me to other types of skateboard that I didn't consider as well as the names and parts of a skateboard. After looking through the boards, I picked one out and I'm glad to have purchased from them. The customer service was great and they were informative. The only issue I've had was later on when I wanted to clean my board and I was looking for some grip gum to clean the grip tape and they told me that they were sold out. I was thinking in my head, no worries I'll just come back in a few weeks. 3 weeks later and they still didn't have it and they told they can just replace the grip tape for around $5. There was nothing wrong with the grip tape so I took a pass on their offer and haven't been back for accessories since. I found out soon after reading that I could just buy some belt sander cleaner and clean my board like that since it is the same material (thank goodness for Sears hardware department). Overall, this is a cool place to pick out a new board or if you are just unfamiliar to it but when it comes to accessories and maintenance, I would have to look around before deciding where to buy it. read more

The name Society itself is appropriate - the retail aspect of the shop is excellent, but it's evident that this is part of a larger orientation towards community involvement and sponsorship of creative expression. I have a 10 year-old boy, who has been smitten with boarding for a couple of years. When he found the Society day-camp for making a long-board, this past summer, he was in heaven. I was able to enrol both him and his friend. The boys were encouraged and mentored by the staff, who like working with kids. Ara and Nicky both gave the level of attention that made this a special experience for the boys. The Society crew - without exception - are positive and obviously care about what they do. The emphasis they have on the creative aspects of skating shows - and they communicate that enthusiasm to the kids they engage with. read more
