It's not your everyday cafe, that's for sure. Pricey, but if you're a true coffee aficionado, you have to go at least once. Seventh Tea Bar Takes tea to the level that Portola takes coffee. Very comfortable seating area including a pleasant outdoor patio. Alexander Gray They fixed my glasses for free. Thanks, AG! Analog I may never buy anything from here, but they sell records. That, and the fact that they are currently selling a vintage Marantz receiver very similar to the one that my grandfather owned (and that I inherited) gets me a little misty. Savory Spice Stop They sell aji amarillo. Hear that, Peruvian cuisine fans? Where else are you going to get that? Even Penzey's doesn't carry aji amarillo. We Olive & Wine Bar Come for the olive oil. Stay for the beer and wine. They sometimes have live music, too. The Mix is self-contained within SoCo, which also has a number of shops and restaurants worth checking out like Surfas and The Iron Press (refer to my review). There's no place quite like The Mix. Prior to our trip the other day I had never been to The OC Mix. Everyday I see many of my Yelp friends frequenting this as well as several of their businesses inside and finally decided to check it out after several other options fell through. Originally, a trip to the OC Mix was not in the cards, however after several misadventures of trying to find some food & ice cream the day after Thanksgiving we ended up here. Many of the places we were attempting to try were closed for the day and we were happy to make our way over to The Mix. The layout both inside and out is beautiful and the shops inside are unique and really set this place apart. I really do wish we had been here sooner but it's not relatively close to home or work so a special trip is needed to head this direction. We started by enjoying some ice cream from N'ice cream before looking around at all of the various shops and restaurants throughout. We had our minds made up to finally check out the Portola Coffee Lab as so many people told me we were missing out but the sheer length of the line itself prevented us from doing so on this trip. I did see several places such as Seventh Tea Bar and The Iron Press which I will definitely be back to check out on future visits. A beautifully setup and crafted little center that only Costa Mesa can deliver. I really enjoyed the experience and looking around here and will have to make another trip out soon to try the places we couldn't on the first go around. read more

The OC Mix provides a bit of something for everyone and appeals to all ages. From food to the small boutique shops, I've made my way over to the OC Mix more times than I can recall haha. It's a neat little space that really brings the community together through farmers markets, movie nights or special events held in the plaza. It truly is a mixture of OC's finest. The home furniture goods are on the outskirts of the plaza, while the market at the center houses local eats, boutique shops, specialty goods and refreshments (Portola coffee or Birdie Juicery). Some of my favorite haunts are We Olive, Arc Restaurant (amazing handcrafted cocktails btw + the bacon - to die for!!) and Shuck Oyster Bar for one of the best cioppinos (seafood stew) I've had. Aside from the shops, the OC Mix is a great place to study or do some work. There's plenty of chairs and tables, but I don't know about availability of open outlets though. In the middle of work week, this place's parking is packed. The shoppers have this edginess about them of missing a deal or something. This place showcases the latest natural or organic or chic outfits. My first impression is that this is a high end swap mix of latest nouveau ideas and merchandise. The problem about these stores is that everything here is pricy and lacks the affordability that comes from mass production. That's why if you want one of a kind item and don't mind the price this is a must visit. read more

The infamous Portola Coffee is here, along with some of my other bookmarks such as Birdie Juice Bar and N'ice Cream. They also have a cheese shop, a wine bar, a spice shop, oyster restaurant, and many others! Great place to meet up with friends, enjoy a coffee / tea / acai bowl / juice / food / ice cream / the list goes on and on. What a fun shopping area! Never saw anything like it in the OC. It's a big wherehouse with different little shops set up inside. All of them are unique little independent shops, or so it seems. You have everything from gelato to Olive oil. I actually bought the sample pack from We Olive for bridal shower gifts and they were a huge hit! There is a coffee shop inside called Portola and I have heard their coffee is amazing. Will have to check it out soon! There is also a lot of trendy clothing shops including shoes and handbags, pretty much everything you need all in one stop. I work on Saturdays but I heard the farmer's market Saturday morning is pretty good. Very enjoyable for families. There is a Chuck Jones are gallery with beautiful artwork by Chuck himself. First time coming here, I was surprised at the nice shops they have here. Restaurants, coffee shops, and many more. I bought some sunglasses from Gear Coop, they had a special deal/clearance. This place has public restrooms. It's half indoor, half outdoor. So you get a little but of sunshine while you shop, or sit to eat. I came here last Thursday in hopes of finding a rare gift for my friend's mom (adopted mama). I heard there were so many rare gems that I had to check it out for myself. I don't live too far from this specialty boutique mall. I remembered whey there were building the place and thinking I can't wait to check them out. I've checked out everything else here including the Food Trucks Line Ups but never ever made it inside the OC Mart Mix. As I parked and walked in, I couldn't help but feel so excited to see what could be around the corner from one corner. I loved the decor of the entire place. Though there were so many empty lofts/suites, if I had something to sell, this would be where I would love to open a store front at. Most of the stores I wanted to look at were closed, I got there around 6:30 pm. So sad... :0( I have to come back for sure now to shop while they are open for biz. It's also shares the same building as Portola Coffee Lab and We Olive...both are "MUST TRY" spots. Though I really wanted to keep this GEM a huge secret but I am noticing it's getting lots of YELP foot stamps so I will be nice and share! Sharing is Caring! UGH.... Have been going here close to 2 years for Portola Roasters and the cheese shop inside as well as Suzzy Cakes and the farmers market First time in 2 years their rent a cop security team gave me a violation for parking for literally 15 minutes on a green space with no signage to indicate parking time limit. To make matters worse I parked at 1034 and they wrote me a violation at 1035. I believe the security confused my car for another car of the same color that was parked there when I had parked. Their threatening notice of them documenting my car for future violations is ridiculous. Makes me never want to go back to any businesses here. read more

A great cozy place to chill and enjoy extra time. It's not mind blowing so please don't get crazy expectations. It is just really peaceful and cute with a good mix of shops to browse and enjoy! Sometimes I just come here to read, enjoy pretty plants, or meet with a friend since the environment is nice. Love these little hipster enclaves in OC. Reminds so much of Portland. Nice little eclectic mix of high end restaurants, boutiques, cafes. Lots of open space. Parking can be kind of a pain. If you're not familiar with SOCO and The OC Mix, let me just say it's awesome! You will find unique shops, incredible restaurants and AMAZING design showrooms. It's a community centered type vibe, and I love shopping there after grabbing a cuppa joe at Portola Coffee. They also have a farmers market on Saturdays and provide awesome events. You'll find a little something for everyone...cute stuff for the kids, pets, cool gifts, barbershop, wine bar - so much to offer in one place. I'd recommend giving them a follow on Instagram to stay in the know of all that's happening there. New and up-and-coming plaza in the area! There are still shops being open here so the selection of shops is relatively scarce. Swung by here on a late weekend day and some of the shops were open, but some of them were closed. There's a good mix to places to shop and to eat, but there is a Portola Coffee Lab if you're looking for a coffee. This place is very reminiscent of the Union Market at The District in Tustin! The rest of the plaza that's not part of OC Mix is basically a lot of home furnishing stores. It was neat to walk around and check them out! There's even an outdoor/climbing store nearby as well. One of the many anti-malls that have popped up all over the county. But this one is small, meandering, feels crowded. I prefer Union Market up the 55 in Tustin, but The Mix has more to offer than Costa Mesa neighbors The Camp and The LAB. The shops here are kinda pricey but interesting. I especially like the Savory Spice Shop. The eateries are overpriced and mediocre for the most part. But I do enjoy me some Portola Coffee every so often or some Iron Skillet across the courtyard. There are a lot of hipsters and new money here sizing each other up. But I enjoy bringing the family here for a nice stroll and some window shopping. read more

I'm positively in love with The OC Mart Mix. I've been so into going to Yelp places in OC for so long that I almost forget all about the stereotype of a homogenized suburb. But, if ever I needed to give someone one place to bust that myth it'd be The OC Mart Mix. I was lucky enough to host a Yelp elite event here earlier this year, but since then I have been time and time again and get so excited when I see they've made more progress on construction. (I know, I know - it's always weird for me to review a place after an elite event, but this place is so damn awesome, I can't believe I've gone THIS long without reviewing it.) This is just such a rad smattering of places to buy clothes, gifts, furniture, and have yourself a glass of wine and the best coffee you've had in your life. Sounds a bit like a mall? Well, it kind of is... but smaller, and cooler, and no chains, and no teenage PDAs and no guys in booths trying to pounce on you with a flatiron. The design of the pace is rad, they've got a nice famers market in the parking lot on Saturdays and they have food trucks there a few times a week too. This is definitely my go-to place these days when I'm looking for a unique gift for someone, whether it's a baby shower, a housewarming, or a just because - I'll be shopping at The Mix. read more

Two words: Self-aggrandizement. Walking in, I could feel the eyes of the vast herds of cattle gazing curiously and disdainfully at me. My Puma sweats and plain black thermal underneath my motorcycle jacket and helmet in hand did NOT AT ALL mix well with this crowd. Looking around, I failed to find a single person who understood what it meant to be comfortable in one's own skin. Nowhere did I see any evidence of genuine uniqueness and confidence. It was all masked behind perfectly coiffed hair which took 2 hours to achieve that "messy look." Behind caked on layers of make-up, emulating the girls of Jersey Shore. I came here to try the hyped Portola Coffee Lab (which will receive its own edition of guilty predation on the sheltered and ignorant masses - http://www.yelp.com/biz/portola-coffee-lab-costa-mesa#hrid:yVQQs6v3l77tuyGl9kadGg/src:self). My friend was late so I wandered around, contempt growing with each step. I made my way through the entrance where rejects from The OC Casting call were seated. Minimalist. Decontructionist. Modern. Chic.......riiiiiiight. To describe this place in words which accurately reflect my feelings would be somewhere along the lines of this: Looks like someone who really didn't give a shit but really wished he did, then gave up 20% into the project and decided to go smoke cocaine instead. You like working in a cubicle? Yeah? Well then, you'll love shopping in one too. The building is a warehouse with unfinished ceilings and cheap "walls" put up to separate the hamster cages which double as "boutique stores." It isn't stylish. It isn't unique. It isn't cool. It isn't hip. It's pathetic. The stores are typical of the trying-too-hard type, and the prices are ridiculous. Just because someone says it's a "boutique" doesn't mean the price tags are suddenly multiplied. But I digress. Yes, the spice store, the ice cream shop, the cheese shop, and the olive oil shop are all interesting. Yes, I was surprised by some of the items available here. Yes, I did purchase spices from Savory. Yes, I did enjoy a scoop of ice cream. This place in terms of what it offers isn't entirely bad, but I cannot tolerate the atmosphere nor can I stomach the false pretension and desperate self-elevation of the people here. I'd like to return to buy more spices. I'd like to return to buy some oil. I'd like to return to buy some cheese. BUT...... I can't justify the thick and heavy blanket I feel covering this place, a feeling that smothers any desire to do a second take. There are too many platform shoes. There are too many spoiled children. There are too many spoiled housewives. There are too many wanna be's. There's too much hair spray. If you think this place is "cool" or "hip" or "unique," you REALLY need to expand your horizons. While walking around, i felt like this was a little bit off my personality, as everything looked amazing, i can't find myself shopping here regularly, as i am very unaware about artisnal stuff. I had the pleasure of coming here tonight for a Yelp event. I walked in for the event, but I walked out thoroughly impressed with the space and the shops! An eye-popping candy store, a few unique jewelry stores, a home accessories store, an awesome gourmet olive oil and balsamic vinegar store, and a couple of clothing stores occupy spaces in this location. Between the modern concrete-floored decor inside and the gorgeous fountain and comfy adirondack chairs on the outside patio, this is a location that I'd love to come back to for more shopping! read more

The OC Mix is an outdoor shopping center that is dog friendly, filled with some great eateries and beverage places, located right off the 405 freeway. I have passed this plaza numerous of times over the last few years on my random trips out to Orange County and always assumed The OC Mix was a shopping plaza with stores that sold furniture, decor, tiles, etc (since there a lot of stores like that found here too). Anyways, I finally decided to check this place out because I was looking for a bakery nearby last weekend, which lead me to here (Susie Cakes Bakery in case you were wondering). There is plenty of parking, but can see how it can be a challenge on a busy weekend. There is a complementary valet though if you are willing to give tip to whoever brings your car around when you are done shopping. The OC Mix is decorated very nicely, although a bit on the small side. There are some outdoor seating throughout (some with shade). Love that I can bring my dog with me when I visit (yep, I am one of those people who bring their dogs everywhere...so what?) or eat or grab a cup of tea/ coffee. For what this small place is, I like it and would come back (but wouldn't make a special visit) if I was in the area. read more

I love this place, the most "hip-est" folks hang here, not to say at all that I'm hip or even cool, but I just love to eat. Many events happen here such as the 3rd Saturday of every month there is a farmers market where the freshest of fruits, avocadoes, mushrooms, honey, and etc come to collect your money, I mean, share their love for locally grown products. There are also food truck such as: sea birds, calbi, taco maria, and many more. There may also be family events where there are free photos taken by a professional, coloring activities for your kids, and I even saw balloon animal making. The minute that I walked in here I felt underdressed because I wasn't dressed that day in a fashionable sense. However, it was an enjoyable experience to look around and try the places like midori matcha or the poke bowl place. I also wanted to try the açaí bowl place here. The boutiques were fun to look at here. Although, I would never buy from the boutiques because they are ridiculously overpriced and I know I can find it cheaper if I do my research. It's fun to get fashion ideas for my closet from them though. I liked that this place has an abundant amount of space for parking. The OC Mart Mix sprung up in a complex previously known for its cluster of furniture stores. Imagine my surprise when I walked in to find not paint, home decor, and furniture but a mall filled with boutiques and eateries. It is laid out like a typical Asian style mall. The format is the same - a large building with stalls inside and a maze like pathway weaving around. But the styling is totally different. It is reminiscent of The Camp, in that it's super hipster but less granola. Think industrial chic softened with lots of natural wood. It's very pleasant to walk around. Naturally, I was most drawn to the store fronts with edible wares. They have some really great anchors. Portola Coffee Lab is bringing caffeine addicted hipsters in droves, N'Ice Cream is contributing organic gelatos and sorbets, a spice center, OC's dedicated Cheese Shop, and it would not be complete without a olive and wine bar. I'm more ambivalent to the boutiques. Most are women's clothing but there are quite a few selling children's clothing too, and some accessories. There are also a fair number of paper goods and just other assorted stuff hipsters buy. read more

Portola Coffee is one of the best places to grab a brew. The Iron Press has beer and waffle sandwiches are a superb combination. The OC mix just keeps getting better with every year. This place reminds me if Vancouver's Granville Island! Which is a good thing because I loved that place. Anyway, The OC Mix is basically a shopping center / plaza but its filled with cool stores, restaurants, and coffee shops. It really is a nice "Mix" of things here and the environment is very welcoming. This place is done just right. It doesn't feel too much like a generic mall, nor does it feel tacky like some shopping centers.. *ahem.. The Grove*.. Its not necessarily a large place to walk or go shopping, but its nice if you kind of already know what you want at a specific store here. Plus its a great place to go grab food, coffee, or even a drink, as there are plenty of trees, benches and tables along the way. read more

This is such a coooooooooooool place. Seriously. While I came here with the intent of visiting one store to see what they had to offer, I ended up spending several hours walking around, investigating the ultra eclectic mix (there's a reason they use the word "mix" in the title of this place) of shops and eateries (and still not seeing all of it). Fun, funky, urban, chic, retro, probably historic somewhere in all this, contemporary, and good gawd, whatever else you can think of....... it's HERE. Stuff for the home, stuff to drink, stuff to eat, stuff for the body...... inside and out. Mostly one-of-a-kind shops, not found elsewhere...... or let me just say, I've never heard of these places. It could just be that I'm not otherwise worldly. I can live with that. Regardless of my level of being in the know, this place is super fun to check out, and super chill. I love it. I don't live near here, but I'm chompin' at the bit to get back here and see the rest of what they have to offer, let alone return to some of the more memorable, favorite places I had the pleasure of investigating. This is an Anti-Mainstream place for the most part. If one is searching for Jamba Juice or Subway, it won't be found here. And I have nothing against the two. I passed this place because from the exterior it looked liked a regular corporate area but the signs outside were attention grabbing. Walked around The Studios portion and was so delighted by everything found. So many reviews describe this as "hipster" this and that...I feel like the hipster culture gets a bad rap. In another life, I was definitely a beatnik/hipster/hippie etc...but alas...I digress... What you will find at The OC Mix are places and shops like ; Cellar Cheese Shop - cheese shop. They give free samples! Michelle Haut chocolat - I was too intimidate by the intimacy to go in. Milk & Honey Baby - Really made me wish my son was a baby again! N'ice Cream - delicious looking ice creams Portola Coffee - had coffee here, very tasty! Savory Spice Shops - lots of unique spices, in sets and solo. We Olive Wine Bar - you can literally smell the aroma walking in! There are seating areas indoor and outdoor, in random spots and expected spots. The atmosphere is super friendly and unpretentious. People of all ages roaming in and out of here, families, couples, and singles. I was just happy it was so unlike most shopping centers. This place is definitely a gem of a find. This place puts out a hippy, alternative, don't buy the standard stuff from big corporations that make all this money off of you. I find it so funny that the merchants and the people who go here put out that vibe, yet all the stores, including the farmers market are so incredibly expensive. Talk about people raping you in the wallet hole and making money off you. You guys get that right? And all the OC hipsters! A bit much to take. People are kind of "too cool" to be friendly and everyone sitting around has the face hole buried into some laptop, or cell phone. Add a healthy dose of bucket looking chicks and its the trifecta of people I don't want to be around. At least when you go to the big corporation malls like Fashion Island and South Coast, there is plenty of eye candy to look at. On the positive side, a lot of the stores, especially home decor and item stores, have really cool stuff. I just hate the whole vibe of this center. A very green, artsy, crafty, original concept of a collective shopping experience. Part craft fair, part boutique shopping, even the smallest of store concepts can get their start here. Reclaimed wood, outdoor loungy areas... I can put out a ton of descriptives of this place, but few will do it justice. If I could just centrally relocate it so that it wasn't in the middle of this large furniture shopping center that I have literally no reason to ever go to but the OC Mix's sheer awesomeness, I would. This is one of my favorite places in Orange County to spend a few hours. Even better on a rainy day! read more

This is one of the most hipster places in the OC. Its more than a dozen local businesses all under one roof. It has an oyster bar, lots of specialty boutiques ranging from custom furniture to meats and cheeses, a coffee "lab", and a tea "bar." Its a great place to grab a cup of coffee and window shop! The fluidity of the design with the glass walls and multiple entrances to businesses as well as tables and comfy sofas scattered about make it more of an open market than a mall. The OC Mix also hosts events in their parking lot, which is pretty cute and very community oriented. The restrooms are pretty cute! There's a bench inside with a cute table and display. I was in the area on work travel for one week, so I knew that stopping here was a definite MUST! Now, I cannot profess to be a coffee connoisseur, but I've been blessed to enjoy wonderful coffee around the world. I fell in love the very moment I stepped foot in this place. I'm inspired by the entrepreneurial artisanship that flows throughout this place. I fell addicted to the Portola Coffee Lab. Josh really spoiled me with all his coffee science intellect and varietal suggestions. Oh how I wish the would consider joining the San Diego scene. I was drooling over the thoughtfully decorated chocolate bars at Michelle Haut Chocolat. They were closed, but I'll definitely be back soon to learn more about all the unique offerings. Can't wait to return for the olive oil ice cream at We Olive, fresh cooking spices at The Savory Spice Shop, and some imported cheese from The Cheese Shop to accompany my wine assortment. Those threads at Eva's trunk teased me to know end; lucky for my shopaholic tendencies, they did not open until 11:00 am. It was barely 8:00 am when I entered the building. Not too worry, there were just enough businesses opening their doors after my coffee extravaganza. I enjoyed perusing the tea room menu at Seventh Street. The oolong teas sounded fabulous; they were even nice enough to offer me samples of everything. I'll definitely be back for tea and crumpets soon. The same customer service experience followed me to Birdie Bowl & Juicery. There, I was able to sample an off menu speciality called chia chocolate pudding; I really enjoyed this. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed with the classic acai bowl. There are just so many cool local artisans at the OC Mix. The entrepreneurialism just blows me away. The sustainable vibe is also what makes me want to contribute monthly allotments to this place. Lucky for my impulse shopping habits, I live in San Diego County; I visit the OC at least once a month though for nails, shopping, etc, so I suppose the 45 minute drive really doesn't stop the show! read more

Another neat hipster spot. Much quieter than the Camp or the Packing District. Mostly catered to unique furniture stores that cost quite a fortune. A few restaurants and clothing stores. It was pretty quiet when we arrived. But it's definitely lively inside. Looked like there was a lot of people meet for study groups. Plenty of space to do so. Enjoy. read more
