**Good Italian at a good price. Another local favorite for the family, Sofia's really delivers on the quality of their dishes as well as the value of what you pay for. Their portions are very generous. As with most successful places, they are slammin on weekend nights so just know that ahead of time. Their dining area isn't the biggest but they do a good job of getting you seated ASAP. It can seem a bit cramped at tiimes but overall it's pretty comfortable. Their specials are always delicious and usually offer a nice variety of pasta, seafood or meat entree options. In addition to their great pasta dishes their pizza is one of our "go-tos" for takeout. Can't go wrong with any of their house pies. Super friendly atmosphere with complimentary rolls and soup/salad with all entrees make this one of the hidden gems in the area in my opinion. I agree with Jessica P's. Everything is just okay. The wine is a little overpriced for their base selection. Once or twice our service was worse than okay. There are so many choices for food in CT, why bother? I literally have never gotten my first choice of what I wanted to eat at Sofia's. Maybe we arrived just after the super-rush (we typically eat dinner between 7pm-8pm), but it was never that busy in there, so much that it became a running joke until we stopped going there. I do like their lasagna. The last time we went there, it took almost two hours to make it through the meal. The waitress just didn't show up for over a half an hour. The restaurant was just not that busy to justify such a sluggish response. The sick thing about it was that the manager just watched us the entire time and never came up once. I kind of felt like he thought we were going to steal something. I promise you, that's a very uncommon thing (my husband and I are two computer geeks). It was generally uncomfortable. The other half suggested Sofia's one night because a friend mentioned some remodeling work had recently been completed. In fairness, the work spruced up the place very nicely -- the bar was beautiful. If only they had brought in a food consultant as well... My dinner was the fried whole bellies. While the portion was HUGE, the food itself was a bit cold and soggy. Not sure how fried food goes cold so fast, but it is what it is. Her meal was a bit more disappointing. She ordered what was described on the special's menu as scallops with risotto. Before ordering, she was adamant about it being risotto and not plain rice. My family & I visited Sofia's today and in the words of Mario Batali, it was "MOLTO BENE" meaning "VERY WE'LL" :o) The atmosphere reminded us of a cozy setting in Italy, our waitress Janet was friendly, well-versed, and attentive to all her customers, and the food was SUPERB :o) We started with Fried Calamari for an appetizer, which was golden brown, succulent, and their sauce was comparable to that of my Italian grandmother :o) I had a mushroom, onion, & sausage calzone and my Dad had a meatball grinder, both being so delicious :o) We didn't have room for dessert because their portions are extremely generous, so we will DEFINITELY be making many return visits :o) If your looking for authentic Italian food in a warm & comfy setting with a delightful and helpful staff, Sofia's is the place to go :o) read more

Good variety of food to choose from and good size portions. Food itself was nothing special, just OK. The atmosphere was family type, with 3 distinct newly remodeled area's. We were sat down quickly, but they were busy so it took a while for us to get our drinks and food. My biggest issue was my lasagna. It in itself was good, but the sauce on top tasted canned. Takeout for us this time. So, full disclosure here, the parking lot is chaos. There's no rhyme or reason to its arrangement. So, once you navigate this, it's typically smooth sailing. The takeout procedure is unorthodox. If it's busy and you're not a model citizen, I can see how you'd be able to walk out without paying. You approach the window to the kitchen, speak your name to one of the cooks, and obtain your order. Then you walk back to the front door and proceed to checkout. Now, for some reason, you also have to pay for your table meal at this one register all while patrons are entering the establishment. Three tasks are completed in one crowded area... Now, the important stuff- the food. I've never been served a meal I didn't like. I don't come here often so I can't remember past meals, so I'll stick to the pizza, which I ordered Saturday night. Two large pizzas were cooked to perfection and fed 6 adults. The thing about this pizza is that it's clean, the crust has a good combo of crispy & chewy, and it's not super greasy. Stopped in here for a Saturday family lunch for 6 adults/2 kids. On Sofia's website there are lunch prices and dinner prices but at 12:30-1:00 we were only presented with more expensive dinner priced menus?? Food was average -burger overcooked, Zuppa clams would have been much better with some added minced clams but flavor was good, kids hot dog had giant bun with average undersized hot dog. Where to begin..... ambience.....tacky diner vibe. Smells like an old diner with faint smell of a bar and smoke, perhaps back in the day when smoking was allowed? Service wasn't bad, just seemed a little burned out. Halfway decent rolls & salad before our meal. Had buffalo wings for an appetizer and they were very tasty. My beau had the Veal Parmigiana. Nice piece of veal. The tomato sauce was heavy and sweet. Cheese, chewy. I had the Stuffed Shells Sicilian. Small shell pasta with ricotta, eggplant, tomato sauce & melted chewy cheese. It was tasty. Not my first visit, but it's been a long time. This visit was for three grinders to take home. The girl who answered for my phone order and delivered to my was awesome. She was sweet, caring, and efficient. The meatball grinder was excellent, among the best I've had. Yet to try the roast beef and a ham / salami grinder, I'm very pleased with the food and experience. The restaurant had people constantly arriving for dining and orders to go. Sofia's was VERY busy at 2 p.m. Wednesday. There's a reason. Food, service, value, and selection is great. I used to come here as a teen with family and friends and loved the place. I moved out to NYC almost 20 years ago. We were up visiting family for the holiday and stopped in for dinner. The eggplant was as good as remember. The service was quick and attentive. Our waitress refilled our drinks without us having to ask for it. Just wish I lived closer to go more often. read more

This is for the young girl at the register , the other night as I do often came in on my home from work to get my to go order which is always great I love the cooks there, anyway my bitch is when I walk to the door to pay the guy behind me who just picked up his food went right out the door with out paying and the girl looked right at him I said he just walked out without paying and she goes who cares? Hands down best eggplant parm I've ever had! I grew up with traditional Italian meals and this place has incredibly eggplant! Also other amazing large portion meals! You don't leave here without leftovers when ordering a main dish; take out works too. Meals are flavorful; also there's a nice "specials" menu. I brought a take out eggplant parm to my grandma and she said it was the best eggplant she's ever had too! She raved about the meal for days! Dining in we've always had good service and fresh food; added bonus for the meals is the salad and a side of pasta. My husband loves the chicken piccata. My husband and I picked up a pizza this evening and I'm said to say, it was pretty gross. The sauce had a weird sweet taste to it and the pizza bottom was soggy, it definitely seemed way under cooked. We have our go to place for pizza but decided to pick up a pizza from here as it was more convenient, sadly we were disappointed and should have just gone with our go to pizza place. I have been going to Sofia's for years. I don't know what is happening lately but the past 12 times or so I have been very disappointed in their food. I've even sent food back.last week I had the broccoli and pasta. There must have been 30 cloves of garlic and it was swimming in oil. I couldn't even eat it. My son had meatball he couldn't eat...to much spices. My daughters fish and chips were gross. And the chicken tenders and fries we equally as bad. read more

Let me just tell you. I arrived with my wife and 9 month old son and there was a bit of a wait, I get it, Friday night. We must have been in line 20 minutes and there were plenty of guests behind us. So the hostess with the mostess(she was all over the place) finally has a table open up, and what does she do? Take the table of three, clearly behind us instead of accommodating my wife, son, and I. Even the couple looked at us like, they were here first but that did not stop her. Her inexperience with customer service ruined my experience here, most parents know how hard it can be to please a 9 month old when your out and about, especially one that is hungry. And to deny him? I'm sorry but that is inexcusable. It's a shame because the food is not half bad but your hostess can go take a hike! Trust me, she needs it! read more

This is your local town italian restaurant. Every town seems to have one, good portions, stereotypical italian menu and satisfactory food. Granted I think most people will like this place more than Olive Garden, but do not expect a meal straight from Rome. Summary: Local restaurant known for its Italian cuisine. We have eaten here before with mixed results, but decided to give it another try. (One good meal and one very bad meal in the past two years) The Basics: Service - Lackluster: Waitress was quick to take our drink/dinner order and then disappeared. I was left waiting for a second cup of coffee while wait staff gossiped. Had to stand up, and WAVE to get the attention of the waitress only to get the eye-roll and visible sigh. (Gee... Sorry to interrupt, but I am a paying customer and you failed to visit the table in the last 15mins....) We got the distinct impression that our waitress had better things to do in the nearly empty restaurant. So we rewarded her with a matching tip. (Note: I ALWAYS tip 18 to 20% unless I am treated rudely or indifferently. I know how hard restaurant workers have to work and tip accordingly. I never punish the waitstaff for things out of their control food quality/speed of kitchen, etc). The worst part of this was that the 'manager' walked past the gossiping group of girls and said nothing. This was repeated for my 3rd cup of coffee and finally the check. Ambiance - Dated: I don't dine out these days for Ambiance, but for a delicious meal that is a good value for my money. If the decor is important I could suggest a few restaurants in Springfield and Hartford that will fill that requirement and leave you lighter in the wallet. Food - Plentiful, but average to below average: Dinner rolls served luke warm with frozen butter pats. Wife ordered Chicken Francaise and received chicken in lemon soup. Should have been in a bowl as it kept sloshing over the side. The lemon overpowered the overcooked/tough chicken (maybe a good thing). Steamed spinach was cooked well. I ordered a sausage/cheese calzone with an additional ingredient (spinach), received the basic calzone without the spinach. Asked for no-cucumbers on the salad, but got them anyway. The salad was large, the Parmesan peppercorn dressing (served on the side) tasted fresh from a bottle but was satisfactory. Sauce was overcooked to the verge of tasting burnt and very acidic. Dough, cheese and sausage were tasty. Side of meatballs (supposedly freshly made) were large but one of the three tasted freezer burnt and was inedible. (confirmed taste with wife to rule out my taste buds) Beverages: Coffee was delicious and hot. Just don't anticipate getting a fresh cup unless you throw up smoke signals or a signal flare. Overall: We won't be back. Third strike and your out. I don't spend my money where it's not appreciated, nor where I am treated as an interruption instead of a customer. The overall cost of the meal after 10% tip was about $35. No appetizer or desert were ordered. In today's economy my dollar has to give me value for what I spend it on, I did not receive that at Sophia's. Sad considering two years ago I had one of my best Italian restaurant meals here. We don't live locally so I will not go out of my way to dine here ever again. read more

I've eaten here a few times and keep coming back. This is the only place in the area that I can find calamari marinara which is my favorite dish. The sauce is so tasty and there's always a generous portion of food. I always have enough for lunch the next day...love it the second time around! We always get great service, salad is nice, and the rolls are always warm. It's really a family style restaurant and the prices are reflective which makes it an affordable place to bring family and friends. I can't wait to go back again! read more
