I took my wife's damaged leather coat in for repair, along with another piece of leather that I thought they might be able to make a patch out of. she warned me that the leathers were not identical, and it would not be perfect, she quoted $40 for the repair. I can't believe how good this coat looks! My wife is 100% happy with the results. We were going to throw this coat away - the damage was pretty large and right in front. They also finished with the repair 2 weeks earlier than they estimated. read more

Sofia's was highly recommended by my co-workers. We have to wear suits for work, and I needed to have one tailored. I'm 5'2, plus sized, and can't buy something off the rack without alterations. I walked in with my suit and a pair of pants that needed a new button. Getting the first quote was chaotic. She wrote me up a ticket for $95. This was to include the button and altering the jacket and pants of my suit. Before I left, she said she forgot the suit had a lining and increased the price to $123. It didn't end there. After she had my suit for a week, she texted me and said she forgot to include the charge for taking in the waist and was adding $34. She refused to stick to the amount she quoted me while I was in the store, so I picked up my clothing without the alterations being completed. read more

Beyond disappointed in the service from this shop. I was told I'd get my bridesmaid dress taken in, the hem done and the sleeves shortened for 170, but when I got there only the hem was done and she wanted me to pay 170. Now I have a dress that doesn't fit me and no time to go anywhere else. She claimed that she never agreed to take the sides in but wrote two separate charges for the hem. How many tailors with 40+ years' experience do you know? Not many I bet. How many are old school European and know their trade? I can only think of one in Redlands, CA. Sofia is the person you want altering your threads, and while on vacation she accommodated my tight schedule well. I needed two pair of shorts hemmed so I don't look like an old man, and for $24 Sofia got them ready in less than 24 hours! Steep pricing? Not for a rush job. However, she did expect cash payment. Understandable for a small business, but I think she will accept a check drawn on a local bank. The shorts came out exactly as I wanted, and the seam was better than stock with a thread color that blended nicely. I'd definitely go back whenever I am in town again. read more

I have beena customer of Sofia's for 6 years now. 2 weeks ago I dropped off an Escada summer coat and knit top. Coat needed 3 buttins resewn and top needed a minor repair at the front. I picked them up 2 days ago. My yellow coat has a large black grease (?) stain on the collar and my knit top was not even touched. Yep.NO REPAIR. I asked Sofia about the stain - I just want to know if it's hanger residue etc? She tells me that it was there when I dropped my coat off - I just didn't notice it. Seriously? I never even got to ask about the knit top (realized was not touched when I got to my car.), because she blew me off after I asked about the coat. I ordered a dress for our daughter's wedding this summer. It arrived the day BEFORE the wedding and didn't fit properly. After calling several places for help, to no avail, my girlfriend suggested Sofia's. It was late on a Friday but she didn't hesitate and said come when you can today before closing. Really disappointed with this tailor. I had my son's Kung Fu costume altered here. We asked for the sleeves to be shortened and a snap to be placed on the inside to hold the costume closed. She told me that I should get two snaps at $5 each because that way the outfit would hold closed securely. Well her logic would have been sound if the seamstress had known how to correctly sew on two snaps. They were done altering it within the week and I was initially pleased by the turn around time. However, the first time my son wore the outfit (for less than an hour) one of the snaps became completely detached from the fabric and was still snapped onto the other half. I called and she apologized and said to bring it back up. Upon looking at the item she told me that the woman who did the sewing had made a mistake and used the wrong type of thread and not to worry because, they would fix it. I waited for about 15 min. in the waiting room and she came out smiling and gave me the outfit. I thanked her and left. The next week (when my son's next class rolled around) again he wore the outfit for less than an hour and the other side of the same snap became completely detached from the fabric and was stuck to the other half of the snap. I realized then that instead of resewing all four snaps when I had brought it to their attention the first time....she had simply resewn the one half that had become detached. This of course makes no sense because the explanation as to why it fell off in the first place is because, they had used the wrong type of thread on all 4 snap halves. So therefore, they should have resewn all 4 snap halves with the correct thread. But, this didn't happen. So I called again and explained again. She once again apologized and I drove back up there again and waited around for another 10-15 minutes. Once again she came out and gave me the outfit and I left but as I walked to the car I started examining the snaps and realized that once again this woman had only resewed the 1 half snap that had become detached. I couldn't believe the sheer laziness of this and the complete lack of concern that she had for knowing that sooner or later the other snaps would come off and I would once again have to drive up there to have it fixed. So I turned around went back inside and again explained to her that of course these other two snap halves are falling off and never were resewn with the correct thread. So I waited around again for them to be fixed. Of course I will never return. These must be the world's most incompetent tailors if they can't even sew two snaps onto a piece of clothing....that is such a simple task. What a joke! read more

I've had some things done here over the years. Although I can't complain about the job they did, they definitely aren't speedy. We're talking 2 to 3 week wait to get something as simple as jeans hemmed. When I asked if they could maybe get it done a little sooner because I needed a certain pair of pants for an interview a week later, they sort of acted like I was inconveniencing them. Sophia's saved my daughter's wedding dress from disaster. Sarah had bought the dress (a sample) from the Gown Shop in Ann Arbor, and the alterations seemed to be simple enough. She took the dress with her to Oklahoma City, and after more than $200 and 2 seamstresses, it still wasn't right. Only 3 days before the wedding, we took the dress to Sophia's and they fixed it in time for the wedding. I went to Sofia's based on the glowing reviews I read online. I had a pair of Seven for All Mankind jeans to be hemmed, and her prices seemed good. However, when I picked up my jeans, the cloth tags saying the brand name had been cut off of the inside of the jeans and the back pocket. I noticed right away, and politely asked her about it, but she was VERY rude and said she hadn't touched them. Now, I don't particularly care about whether or not I have designer tags on my jeans while I wear them, but if I ever wanted to resell them the price would drop dramatically. Plus, it seems obvious that she is sewing the tags on cheaper jeans to make them seem like Seven jeans. What other reason would she have to cut off all of the brand markings? I was very shocked that a professional tailor with good reviews would do something like this, so I wanted to make sure others know before going in to see her. Her defensiveness/rudeness to my question was further evidence of her unprofessionalism. I would never recommend her, and I will definitely not return. read more

The work that was done was fine. I had the straps shortened and the length taken up on a dress - for $60, which is higher than I would have expected - but both of these were completed and looked good. Sofia was also going to shorten the sash, so it didn't hang down past the new length of the dress - this was not completed, and as another reviewer touched on, due to the length of time it took to have the alterations done in the first place, there wasn't enough time to have the error corrected. For the time and money spent, next time I'll go elsewhere. read more

i first went to sofia's last summer to have straps put on a dress that i was going to wear on my birthday. when i took the dress home and tried it on, i noticed that one strap was way off center and a little crooked. my birthday was the next day so there was not time to have it corrected - i ended up having to wear a sweater over the dress so my bra strap didn t show on the side with the crooked strap. i took the dress back two days later and received no apology - they did fix the strap and it's fine now. based on that experience i was taking my other alterations to my old tailor which is an hour away, but when i needed some pants hemmed and didn't have time to drive all that way i decided to take them to sofia's and give the place another chance since it has good online reviews. i figured the dress was probably a fluke and it would be almost impossible to screw up hemming a pair of pants - i was wrong. when i picked up the pants (white linen) they were folded up and looked fine. when i tried them on at home i noticed a bunch of pink stains on them - some were right on the hem and looked like finger prints, others were large patches all over one leg. i took the pants back and said that there were stains on the pants - sofia immediately got defensive and said there was no way she stained the pants and that they must have been that way when i brought them in. i said i had just purchased the pants, never worn them, and if they had stains when i brought them why didn't she note that when she was pinning them? she then actually started yelling at me saying that they must have been stained when i purchased them because they keep their hands clean. i now have to pay to have the pants dry cleaned, in addition to the $14 i paid to have them hemmed, and i will never be going back to sofia's again. read more

I just purchased a brand new HUGO BOSS suit at Macy s and needed some minor alteration done. I went to see Sofia, and she eyeballed all the measurements. I didn t feel that this visit was starting off good, and I expressed to her what I wanted. The collar needed to be lowered to take a small roll out between the shoulder blades. I also wanted to shorten the sleeve length, waist taken about an inch, and a slight break in the pant length. She kept interrupting me to tell me how she was going to alter my suit, and so I put my trust in her, after all she is professional. The total cash only charge was $85.00. I picked up the suit about a week later and I found the lapel and collar was not straight when putting the suit on, sleeves on the arms were uneven, and still had a roll between the shoulder blades. When paying for this she took the cash only payment and gave me no receipt. (hard to push the issue without proof of the transaction) I returned to her shop after trying on the suit to express my concerns, as I have not wore the suit out in public. She once again took over the conversation and told that my shoulders we not the same size and that everything else was done right and basically walked away and started talking to another customer that was waiting. I took my suit to the HUGO BOSS store at Somerset Mall in Troy that has just open a few months ago, where I purchased a second suit a few weeks later. I told about the experience I had with Sofia s, and they told me to bring it so that they could look at it. They actually measure the sleeves and told me one was longer than the other, and told me that right shoulder was not done right, and was the cause of the collar not sitting right. I tried on my new suit that they had just finished, and keep in mind that both suits are in the same collection, but a different color, and the one that I purchased from them fit PERFECTLY! They said that they would correct Sofia s mistakes and make it identical to the one that I just purchased from them. The showed me where she had cut the sleeve of my new suit and stated she should buy me a new suit. I have only used Sofia s once on a trial basis and will not try to recoup my $85.00, as I have no receipt, so if you choose to go there...buyer beware. I have gone to Sofia for a couple of things that were done excellently, but my family members have been going for years. My stepmother, who is a size zero (and the most picky, detail-oriented person I know) bought a size ten dress in the hopes that Sofia could work her magic and tailor the dress to fit her size zero frame. Sofia did an excellent job and now my stepmother raves about her and will only take her clothes to Sofia to be tailored (she get's just about every article of clothing she buys tailored). My mother also has had wonderful experience with Sofia. I've noticed that the negative reviews posted here are posted by people who only post 1-2 star ratings for any establishment and have a lengthy history of posts. This site is supposed to be useful to consumers, but when you get people like that on here, it's just rude people being rude through another avenue. Perhaps these reviews should just be disregarded. Also, when discussing the price of hemming pants or a dress, it is imperative that you mention the material and number of layers, as that can have a drastic effect on price, regardless of where you take it. Simply quoting the price of hemming a dress, without more detail, is useless information. read more
