So it started off as any date night with my amazing gf. She was getting ready and I was on yelp looking for a new and upcoming restaurant to go eat. A few popped up , but one caught me eye with the words Latin Flavors. We arrived for dinner and were seated immediately, the bar was full and the other people were conversing among themselves. Our waiter arrived with such a big smile , with homemade chips and water. My we ordered some amazing cocktails . We moved on to ordering food, the empanada was amazing. We also had a Tamale which is homemade from scratch , it was amazing the flavors made my mouth water with every bite. So we decided to order some tacos. The waiter was very knowledgeable he suggested what kind of tortillas paired well with what type of meat you got. He was right . This was pretty okay. I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere was nice but I think I may have ordered something incorrectly. I felt like the food wasn't seasoned fully. Then again, we modified a normal recipe by only having the fajitas with shrimp instead of chicken. The servers were helpful and the food wasn't bad--I think it may be my fault why it wasn't as flavorful as I was expecting. Still, for the price, and the lack of deep personableness between us and the waiter(s), was faintly disappointing as a Mother's Day present. read more

This place doesn't know what it wants to be. It has Caribbean and Mexican food in the same menu, but doesn't really fully commit to either. Like, it doesn't offer something as simple as rice with steak. If they were aiming to be a fusion restaurant, they failed. read more

My husband and I stopped here for lunch recently. Our server was helpful helping us decide our drinks and food. I had the Volcano margarita and highly recommended it! The Ropa Viejas was very good. What a great find! Was taking a friend to the airport and we looked for a place to eat Sofrito popped up on Yelp! It looked interesting. What a great choice we made. They have a tequila list with all kinds of choices and various dishes from all over Latin America. There were so many choices that I'll have to go back again and again. Had the whole snapper. Next time it'll be the paella! Apparently it's family-owned and I prefer that to chain restaurants. Good service, good prices, good portions = overall excellent! read more

Being Puerto Rican, I'm always on the lookout for a great Caribbean restaurant. The name Sofritos caught my eye and I decided to give this place a try. The restaurant is tastefully decorated in a sunny Caribbean style. Very warm and inviting. We were greeted by the owner Ana with a warm and attentive manner. Our server Jorge explained the menu in detail and made several suggestions. I decided on the Dominican style meatballs (Ana's mother's recipe). They were delicious. It came with yellow rice and plantains. I prefer white rice with stews. My mom had the mofongo and my aunt had the fried chicken. They were very happy with their selections. For dessert Ana sent over a coconut empanada. It was amazing! This restaurant is a hidden gem and is worth a visit. However, my only complaint is that the staff did not wear a face covering. That made me feel uneasy. So I hope they do moving forward. read more

I love the food at Sofrito. There is plenty of variety and I'm still working my way through the menu, but everything I have tried so far has been great. The portions are substantial. My favorite so far is the Steak Parrillada and my wife loves the Mofongos. The three appetizers I have tried so far (guacamole, queso, and ceviche) have all been winners. The staff is always super friendly and we always feel welcome. There's outdoor seating and the atmosphere inside is great and feels modern and clean. I love supporting a locally owned small business and especially one that is great at what they do. read more

I had lunch at Sofritos yesterday and it was awesome. I had the caipirnha cocktail (similar to margarita, but with rum), ceviche as an appetizer, pork mofungo as my main course, and guava empanada for dessert. Everything was delicious, made fresh, and more than I could eat. The mofungo alone have fed 2 (maybe 3) people, but I wanted leftovers to take home. Luis checked in regularly, kept my drinks (including my water) full and was very attentive in a non assuming way, which was perfect. We were there for several hours and never felt rushed or as if we were a chore. I'll definitely be back. read more

This review is for their new West End location downtown. A real neighborhood gem. I visited during their soft opening and was very pleased. Margarita was excellent as were the empanadas and yuca fries. Best part was that the staff were friendly and it really felt like a family environment. Eating at the bar is more informal and the enclosed seating area is more upscale. My advice: go twice and see which you prefer. read more

My favorite local Latin eatery. Many glute free options and they have recently gotten a dedicated fryer so I can eat the plantains, which are a delight! So many excellent choices for GF diets and so haven't had any issues eating here with a GF required diet. Everything I've eaten has been delicious. My favorite is the braised beef which is truly delectable. I usually get the Ropa Vieja. It comes with plantains, beans and rice. I order with a side of corn tortillas, and like to eat it like a beef, rice and bean "taco". It also makes excellent leftovers for the workweek. Yum! read more

I never go to a restaurant twice in one week, and definitely not twice in 3 days, but it was soooo good that I had to go back. . .and I'll go again this weekend with friends I'm sure! My family and I went there for dinner after hearing such good things, and it was delish. Hector, the owner, was there, and the hospitality was off the charts. We had the ropa vieja and mofongo (green plantain with steak), The black beans and rice tasted like a grandmother's kitchen-- the flavor just right. The volcano margarita is to die for - GET IT! Everything is homemade, the service is awesome, the environment is lively and homey, and I love it! The tres leches was also fab for dessert. Go see them. We went in on a whim and was seated immediately. Hubby ordered a mojito which he said was delicious. I ordered the Mexican chicken casserole, son ordered steak fajitas and hubby ordered a veija cubana. Upside: The food was delicious, came fast and the presentation was amazing. Cons: we ordered water and the waitress never brought it and when we asked someone else for it, it came but we never got a refill and were never offered straws. I ordered online for pickup. It said to be there for pickup at 6:25. I got there early, and the restaurant was full, which is great to see, however, I didn't get my food order until 6:45, which under different circumstances would have been fine, but I was in a time crunch. So when my food was finally ready at 6:45, they apologized and explained that they were busy. Everyone was fine with their food selection, the meats were all well seasoned. But I ordered a chimichanga. It was a burrito. I have never had a chimichanga that was not fried. So my guess is they threw it together and sent me out of the door. I wasn't particularly impressed with this place to be honest. We came here for lunch and ordered queso to start. It was a weird almost "sauce" instead of cheese. It wasn't even hot. Not much flavor. The chips here are also thick and not so fresh in my opinion. So many better options for Hispanic food in the area. It's also weird that there is tacos and what I'm guessing is Dominican/Puerto Rican cuisine together? (I'm half Puerto Rican, not really sure where the chef hails from) Neither is done particularly well and they're just not well matched together in my opinion. I would skip it personally and either go to a good Mexican option in the area or perhaps one of the fantastic Cuban places that have been popping up. read more

We just ate at Sofritos for the first (and last) time. Ordered the Dominican charcuterie board. The sausage was the best meat on the platter. Husband and I didn't really like the fried salami. Yuca fries were cold, steak carnitas were crunchy and overcooked. I LOVE steak but most of it is going to be fed to my dog tonight. The steak was so dry I actually dipped a piece in ketchup and that is an absolute travesty. French fries were hot and delicious, as were the maduros (we asked those be substituted for the tostones listed for the dish and they were happy to accommodate). Beef empanadas were ok but the ground beef lacked seasoning/flavor. Black beans lacked flavor and rice was overcooked. The maduros and French fries were the best things I ate there. read more

Have eaten here 4 times. The last two times ( one being 04/29/2023. I have been so disappointed with the quality of food I received. The mojitos were watered down. I ordered carnitas asada with rice and beans. If didn't even come out in a plate. He hands me 2 silver pots. I was waiting for my rice. He said it's under the beans in the pot. Tacos and Mas recently opened off Woodruff road which I was extremely excited for since I've heard great things about it. I had sautéed shrimp with a green, garlic sauce. I was nervous to try it since I've never had anything like it, but the flavor was outstanding. The complimentary chips and salsa are also pretty good. The chips are thicker (kind of like a double chip) and the salsa is a mild. They have a great happy hour selection and drink menu as well. I'll be back and for a margarita! read more

It unfortunately seems like tacos and mas on woodruff road is going the way of so many restaurants in the area It always seems that restaurants after a certain period of time sacrifice quality and portions while the price remains the same. And unfortunately for this location, it's noticeable. When we first went to tacos and mas everything about it wow'ed us. From the service to the drinks to the freshness of the guacamole. Now....that reaction is more of a "meh. It's not worth going back to. Especially considering the price point." The quality and service that originally distinguished tacos and mas from the plethora of other taco places in the area is unfortunately no more. Time to find a new taco joint I guess. read more

Ok so...let me just say the food is AMAZING!! This is by far the best tasting taco restaurant I've ever eaten at. When we first walked in it was chaotic. We didn't know there was a 30 min wait time until after our meal. There was no host/hostess to greet us and let us know there was a wait time. Hats off to the owner. Despite being the Host, Server, and Chef, he was really nice and made sure our food was brought out fast. We will be revising this place very soon. read more
