YUBU close-up. As good as it gets.

*YUBU- A Foodie's Fastfood* Now this appeared out of nowhere. Not even found on the main menu, you gotta look out for it in one of the stalls. I am talking about topping-yubu. This is rizz in Korea. Small in size yet packing a taste profile equivalent to a full-sized meal, it is popular among ladies watching for calories and foodies that have limited stomach bandwidth but greedy to experience a spectrum of flavor in a sitting. I noticed my wife bought one plate and left it on the dining table. Obviously she went up for a change in clothing so I sneaked just ONE into my mouth and it was truly shocking- the flavor is so steeped with umami that the rice underneath provided a subtle sweetness to envelope the main topping like how a soft bagel would buffer any smoky edge of a lox, aaand... it's magi-gone! So up goes another one into my mouth. This time from spicy chicken to beef steak! Two is clearly enough to satiate hunger so I was quite surprised by the value primed into this edible contraption. Hmmm... but how would the other one taste like.... And another... Mmmm...! Believe me I had such a good laugh when my wife saw an empty tray and gave me THE death stare. It quickly turned un-funny when I had to go back to H Mart to grab another one but it was sold out so I had to bring her out for a proper dinner. Ouch. TLDR: Very filling amazing sampler for the price, perfect for busy or decision-handicapped foodie like me who can't decide to eat chicken or beef.

This is one of the 5 restaurants at the food court inside the H Mart Asian supermarket. It's the only one detached from the rest at the far end next to the restrooms. The way you go about ordering your food is a bit unusual. You would look around at each restaurant for the menu as well as mock samples and decide what you want. Then you have to go to a centralized ordering station, which is the second station from the back, to make your order and pay for your food. The number on your receipt would be announced via the loud speaker when your food is ready. But there's a twist - you have to pick up your food at the respective restaurant. If you order from multiple restaurants, you'd have no idea which one is ready when you hear your number announced. This could be confusing and frazzling, especially if you've never been here before, and/or you have a big party and your orders are all over the place! We've tried Sogongdong twice so far. The soft tofu stew (soondubu) is very standard, using the standard soondubu serving vessels and ingredients. They come piping hot and with a raw egg and 2 banchan sides. I've always had the seafood variety and I would recommend you the same. Unless you can't take seafood, there's simply no comparison how much more tasty the seafood broth is. I've tried the beef/seafood combo but I would not recommend it. The beef is almost always tough. Price is a bit cheaper than other soondubu joints, but you only get 2 banchan sides compared to 6-8. On the most recent visit, the sides were kimchi and pickled cucumbers. Tip: don't feel abashed to ask for banchan refill. They won't cringe. Also, make sure you crack the egg into the broth while it's still piping hot. I think this is my favorite among the restaurants at this H Mart food court. Give it a try when you're in town.

Had my fav bimbimbap veggie version to go. Tasty with side of soup and kimchee. Soup had beef but you figure it would. Ok value. Not sure it there was much or any sesame oil. Weird setup to order and pay where you do it at a separate cashier. Fairly fast service. Took to go for road trip. Ok value.

On our last visit, a few Sunday nights ago, we popped in at dinner time on impulse and were seated immediately, though it's not a big space and it gets a lot of traffic. We walked through the little bar to the interesting and well-appointed dining room. I ordered a Singha beer and my wife got her standard Thai iced tea, very well made here. We split an appetizer of delicious crispy firecracker shrimp. She got her favorite, Pad Thai with shrimp, and I got mine, creamy green curry with chicken (I chose a 3 out of 4 on spiciness, which was close to my limit!). Both were terrific, As always, the service was efficient and polite. We haven't tried this place for carryout yet, because I think we just like sitting there so much. If you like the unique flavors of Thai food served cheerfully in a pleasant atmosphere, I think you'll like Thai Meric.

Service was fast and friendly - we were surprised by how quickly our meals arrived. The food was seriously flavorful and plentifully portioned. I was able to request the curry without fish sauce, which isn't an option everywhere. Highly recommend the panang curry and drunken noodles, but I would expect everything on the menu to be just as good.

I think it's interesting that the menu has Vietnamese, Korean, and Latin options. It made me a bit sad that even with the Korean options, there was no soju in the drink menu- it would go great with some of the options! but it's a Vietnamese restaurant so I get it. I haven't tried any of the Korean or Latin dishes yet, but when I do, I'll report back. As I am a creature of habit, I of course ordered the pho dac biet. The broth was good! I'd rate this pho a 3.5 due to a lack of meat (it was mostly the meat balls), but it was at a reasonable price of $14. They give cute little sauce jars with hoisin sauce and siracha sauce! The third sauce is my favorite, though. It's vinegar with pickled (?) onions and chili! So yum... For dessert we got the mango sticky rice!! A bit on the pricy side at $9, but it was super good!

The parking lot is very small about 10 parking spaces shared between four stores. Upon entering we were the only group so seating was easy. For appetizer, we had the summer roll and the egg roll. The summer roll was good and the sauce was thicker than I'm use to but still tasty. Egg roll was crunchy and sauce elevated the flavor. For the entree, I had the Large Pho Tai. Price is 15 dollar which is not bad compared to other Pho restaurants in Montgomery county, MD. I always say that you can tell if the pho is good and authentic is by the broth flavor. The broth here is rich & flavorful and no msg used here per the owner. The portion size is decent and staff were very friendly. Very attentive to our need and refilled our water when it was low. The owner chatted us up to a little bit and we learn that this restaurant has been in business for about 2.5 years. The owner used to work at pho nom nom in Rockville back in the day. All in all, I would recommend anyone in the area to give this restaurant a try and will come again later in the future.
