Adam Jones was out point of contact and he was great. He responded to all our concerns, although we did not have but one or two. He went above and beyond in responding to our calls. Knowing I would eventually have to decommission our 50 year old in-ground oil tank after switching to natural gas last year, I bit the big one, decided to get it done and found Soil Solutions in the process. I was put in touch with Alex, who explained everything I could expect start to finish including best-case through worst case scenarios. He was very thorough and didn't sugar-coat the possible expenses. With my eyes wide open I greenlit the work and never regretted it. As it turned out, contamination was detected but not so bad that the tank and soil had to be removed. It took a total of four or five visits of two people each (except the last visit which required but one person to fill the tank in with an inert material and cover it with dirt.) Hard to see the area was ever disturbed. It's important to note that everyone that came out was professional, got right to work, stayed working, and gave me no sense of attitude. I regret not capturing their names as they were all great. Of equal importance is that Alex was also professional, knowledgeable, friendly, attentive and kept me in the loop step by step. Literally. We ran into a small mishap where the fan was vibrating too much and causing a humming noise in the room adjacent to the fan. We had Soil Solutions install a radon mitigation system this week. After checking with some friends who have had it done and getting bids, we settled on them for a few reasons. Though their price wasn't the lowest, they were responsive and straightforward. We followed up on their initial bid with some questions and they got right back to us with easy answers. We just felt confident that there wouldn't be some issue popping up during installation. They were easy to schedule the work with and they've been very responsive when we had to change a time for follow up work. And the install was clean and neat and done faster than anticipated. As far as cost goes, they may be a little bit more than the cheapest bid we got, but the piece of mind and ease of working with them more than made up for the small difference. And since they're local and so responsive, we feel confident that it won't be a struggle if we have an issue with the system in the future. read more

Soli Solutions was hired to install a radon mitigation system in our home. I made it clear that my wife and I wanted wanted a solution that hid the pipes as much as possible so the radon mitigation equipment particularity the piping was as unobtrusive as possible as this work took place in a living space. Soil Solutions ignored myself and my wife the owners of the property and instead did whatever they wanted and apparently listed to the broker and the buyer without consulting us. Then after complaint about it to their Project Manger he had the shear audacity to call us "obtrusive" because he insisted he did a good job and shouldn't have listed to us. We asked to talk to the Manager or Owner and they never called or tried to work out anything with us. I would never hire them again and certainly do NOT recommend them. read more

I would give Soil Solutions zero stars if that were an option. Soil Solutions lacks integrity and is not willing to stand by their work. If you are thinking about hiring them, think again. My wife and I bought a house in December and the previous owner, as part of the sales agreement, agreed to have the sewer line replaced. When we moved in we noticed that there was some settling in the front yard in a couple of spots - the fresh soil from the excavation was soggy with rain and had compacted on itself. No big deal, we called Soil Solutions and after a few tries, they came out and filled in their holes. A month or so later we realized that the landscaping lights in the front yard didn't turn on. We were new owners, but we could've sworn that the lights were on the many times we drove by the house when it was still for sale. A little investigation of the low-voltage wiring led us to discover that the wiring had been cut when Soil Solutions dug up and replaced the sewer line. Rather than replace or fix the problem, they buried it. I called and spoke to Todd. I told him that I was going to hire an electrician to fix the wiring and asked them to pay for it. He said technically it wasn't Soil Solutions fault, but that he would send someone out to fix it. Rather than argue with him on the legitimacy of his claim, I simply accepted his offer. When I came home from work, the lights were on and the damaged wires were buried again. My hope is that they will last for many years to come. As spring turned to summer, I decided to test out our home's irrigation system. It took me some time to program, but when I set the thing to turn on, it didn't start. I had a couple of different contractors come out and none of them could find the main shut off valve. Again, these are typical problems that a new homeowner will face. I should have known better and just focused on the spot closest to the sewer line replacement - experience would've told me that the confusion likely had something to do with Soil Solutions. But instead I fumbled around until I found the previous owner's maintenance guy. He called me from my front yard one day and said that he had found the valve. Good news. It was buried under 18" of dirt in (you guessed it) the area where Soil Solutions had replaced the sewer line. I was relieved until he told me that when he turned the valve on, the valve sleeve filled with water. He recommended that I dig up the area and see if I could locate the leak. I've uploaded a picture here. Not 8 inches from the main valve, Soil Solutions' expert excavators snapped the PVC piping, and then buried their mistake, valve and all. At this point the mess that Soil Solutions had left behind was unbelievable. I called Todd again to tell him that I was going to have the break fixed and I would send him a bill. Stopping just short of yelling at me on the phone, Todd was rude and impatient and told me that the irrigation break wasn't their problem. I explained that I simply wanted the issue fixed, and he told me that the contract that was signed excluded Soil Solutions from any damage caused to un-marked utilities. Understandable, I said, but I hadn't signed the contract. And regardless, it is Soil Solutions' job to repair and replace infrastructure in underground locations. To do so and maintain a good reputation for your work, it seems to me that precaution and care would be paramount. If his crew had been careless and destructive during their operation on my front yard, didn't he feel obligated to fix their mistakes? Todd said no. He told me that the break was my problem and HONESTLY wished me luck in getting it resolved. I told him that his actions were comparable to an orthopedic surgeon doing an invasive operation on my knee, shattering my femur in the process, sewing me up and sending me on my way. Which I thought was an apt analogy ... except surgeons are doctors. With brains. The fact that Soil Solutions didn't feel any responsibility to fix their last mistake makes me think they don't care about customer service or their professional reputation. I wish them well in their efforts to complete as many shoddy, half-ass jobs as possible in the shortest possible period of time. After all, apparently that's what people are paying for when they hire Soil Solutions. read more

I wouldn't use soil solutions again. They have horrible accounting department that will send you invoices years after you have had completed services. We paid well over $6,500 for service that was completed in 6/21, and they emailed me an invoice last week of a $75 site inspection charge. Something that should have been invoiced for years ago, and included on the initial invoice we paid. Not sure what type of business asks their clients for $75 site inspection fees years after they have already hired them. But if you want a very behind accounting department with surprise invoices, go ahead and hire them! read more

I see a theme with other poor reviews mentioning issues with oil tanks being decommissioned. I've only specifically dealt with their sewer scope/repair services. We did do an oil tank search during a property sale, but no issues were present, so no complaints. The hands of bureaucracy have officially slapped me. The letters from the city requiring a sewer scope and upgrade have come. We manage a few properties on the same street in NE Portland. I'm sure I'll get more. Non-conforming sewer lines be damned. Soil Solutions is speedy and thorough. If that hand comes down to slap me again, I know I'll be sending Soil Solutions again. I appreciate the quality of their scopes and the knowledge of their employees. Their reports are easy to follow, and I feel comfortable sending them off to the City without needing further clarification. I'm really hoping that I never have to undergo a colonoscopy. I'm banking on technology improving dramatically before I reach my 50's. I've got 20 years left, so I can afford optimism. At the moment, we're trying to buy a house, and it needs a colonoscopy (i.e., sewer scope) of its own prior to closing. Since there's not an MRI-style solution for sewer inspections, we need the old fashioned invasive tube-down-the-hole experience. The gang at Soil Solutions were happy to deliver. Yikes. Seriously... Soil Solutions enjoys the rare good reputation in a business crowded with liars, dimwits and thieves. I had one experience with them, and it was bad. A tank they had decommissioned started leaking oil 5 years later, and it turned out they had done a quickie job, omitting to cut and cap the supply lines as required by DEQ procedures. Granted, 5 years had gone by, but they insisted they had done the job by the book and flatly refused to participate in the 2nd decommissioning. I wouldn't recommend them. read more

We recently sold a house with an in-ground oil tank. The buyers, not surprisingly, wanted it decommissioned. I got bids from two different companies (both recommended by my realtor), and chose Soil Solutions because we were impressed with their customer service and the fact that they got their bid to us the same day. We had the same project manager from start to finish. It was so nice not having to deal with multiple people! The decommissioning happened while I was at work. I had been worried about what I would find when I got home, since the oil tank was right by a sidewalk, a foundation, and a whole lot of plants, but all I saw when I got home was the tiniest patch of bare dirt where once there had been grass. I was amazed. My only complaint is that they used my garden hose to do some clean up, and while they shut off my hose wand, they did not completely shut off the water supply. This meant that that night I found water leaking through the hose bib in our finished basement. Luckily, no permanent damage was done, but it was upsetting nonetheless. I would still highly recommend them, though. read more

I found myself in the crappy situation mentioned by Kal C. of being on a party sewer line and being served as a nuisance to the city. I tried fighting it, but that's another yelp review on PDX Environmental Services. I want to warn you that people are getting jacked on this! Why, because the city is enforcing it and there are a lot of companies out there taking advantage. I got three quotes. One, Sharon Bowell, is a smart PE (professional engineer), and took me seriously when I told her the bids I had gotten so far were exorbitant. The initial bid was 3 grand less - including what I thought would be cheaper - Roto Rooter. The construction team was very nice, professional and worked v. hard as there were giant bolders beneath the soil. It wound up being a grand more, but within the scope of the original bid and still 2 grand less than competitors. Her team followed up with me, took picutres and ensured my yard was returned to its original state. I highly recommend them! read more

I worked with this company to decommission an underground heating oil tank at my son's farm. They came out the same day I called them to checkout the location and to work up an estimate. I received the estimate the next day as promised. After a follow up discussion with project manager Paul Tate, the contract was signed and the work was scheduled. On the day scheduled for the work, Keith and Corey showed up on time and did the work as planned. They were friendly and knowledgable. The tests came back clean the next day as promised and the tank was filled with an inert material and a certificate of decommissioning issued. We just sold our house in SE Portland, and could not have closed on time if not for the great work from this company. They decommissioned our oil tank (675 gallons) after the inspection showed pollution. From the time I contacted them to completion of the project was under a week. When you are waiting to sell, their promptness in getting the work was crucial. You can hardly tell where the tank was, because they took great care in digging to get access to the tank. After we accepted an offer, the house came up with radon levels that needed to be mitigated as the last hurdle to get to closing. Soil Solutions moved me to the top of their busy schedule, so we could close on time. The pump they added took care of the radon levels, and we passed inspection and closed on time. Their prices are competitive with the other contractors that do this kind of work. They even gave me a discount for the radon work, because we had the oil tank work done by them. DO NOT use Soil Solutions for a sewer line repair or replacement. Four years ago I purchased a home and had a sewer line inspection. Based on Soil Solutions sewer scope roots were in the pipe and they recommended I repair the damaged section of the pipe for the cost of $1850. At the time I did not know that they do not do the work themselves, they contract that work out. After four years and four visits from plumbers needing to clear the pipe Soil Solutions came out and did another scope. It revealed that both ends of their repairs had failed and roots were in my line again. They admitted their work had failed but refused to repair the problem. Instead they gave me a quote of $5500 to replace the entire pipe, $1000 higher then any other contractor. No discussion or compromising of standing behind their work. Believe the bad reviews on this site and DO NOT use Soil Solutions for any sewer line repairs or replacement. You will be sorry!!!! read more

We worked with Solution for several weeks; they came and scoped our sewer and presented us with three different proposals which we thought was too high. Soil Solutions was willing to work with us when we suggested that we will dig and expose the sewer pipe ourselves. They then came and fixed the sewer which turned out to be a more straight forward fix and less complicated than we thought. Soil Solutions was willing to use the appropriate proposal and charged us accordingly. I needed a sewer line repair on my home that was required to be done prior to closing on the sale. The buyer's agent "recommended" Soil Solutions to do the job. When I got the estimate for the bid, it was for over $15,000! This seemed like a ridiculous amount and I told my realtor that I would be looking for other bids, which he was fine with. The buyer's agent, however, was really pressuring me to use this company and I felt like there was some kind of back door policy going on here between the other realtor and this company. I easily found another place to do the same exact job for only $5,000, 2/3 LESS than this place! And, you guessed it, the buyer's agent became very combative about it. Why would it matter to her who I was getting to do the job as long it was getting done by a licensed and bonded professional? Hmmm...I found out that Soil Solutions also does not actually do sewer line repairs, they have it contracted out for someone else to do it, so that would also explain the jacked up price! In any case, I would not recommend this company and with any expensive repair, you should always look around for different estimates. read more

During the home buying process most people figure out that, even with recommendations, it's hard to find people who are nice, know what they're doing and don't charge an excessive amount, so I wasn't really expecting stellar service for a sewer scope. I had been given two different recommendations from people as to who to go with for this part of the process and I'm so glad I chose Soil Solutions. They were amazing! The technician was on time and was very professional. He explained the sewer set up in detail and gave me a DVD of the scope. On top of having a nice tech, the scheduling staff were exceptional. They sent me an email with the scope results, explained the findings and answered some questions I had about the whole thing. In preparing my late father's house for sale I encountered the unfortunate need for two services, a fuel tank decommissioning and a sewer line replacement. In both instances I selected Soil Solutions to perform the work. The fuel tank became a pretty major event when ground water was found contaminated. The sewer was a surprise need. I want to give an update to my previous Soil Solutions review. Darren, one of the owners, followed up with me personally regarding a poor service complaint. Besides offering solutions and follow-up services to fix the problem (which was substantial settling and erosion on the back fill for a sewer line), he took the time to diagnose what had happened and why I never heard anything back. Besides his offering a remedy, what I appreciate most is the time he took to contact me and figure out what happened. That says a lot in of itself, and speaks volumes about the values and company culture. Even more, communication was polite and to the point. I firmly believe if I would have made more of an effort to follow-up my email with phone calls, I would have received the same great customer service with any of their employees and any problems (which can happen) would have been addressed in a timely manner. read more

In connection with a recent home purchase, we asked Soil Solutions to bid on two projects: a radon mitigation system and a partial sewer line replacement. Dave, who came out to look at the downstairs for the radon mitigation system, was friendly and professional. He was much more thoughtful than the other radon company about placement of the system, in light of the living space and how the foundation walls aligned. Soil Solutions bid was competitive with the other company, but we came away with a lot more confidence that the project was being thoughtfully bid. Based on what Dave said, Soil Solutions would give a good guarantee of the mitigation results. We will choose Soil Solutions for this project. Two men spent about two hours scoping the sewer line, measuring it, videoing it and marking it outside the house. Their efforts and thoughtfulness was SUBSTANTIALLY MORE than the other two sewer companies whose opinion we sought on the line. Another company told us that they would bid on the project but only if we spent $300-600 for the to do what they called "extensive line locating". The Soil Solutions team did that for free. Our main contact at Soil Solutions, Robert, seems very reasonable when we talk about the need to do the work (i.e., whether we can "wait and see" how the line looks 1-2-3 years from now), and - come the day we need to re-scope the line and/or actually undertake the project, Soil Solutions will be our first call...and they may be the only call that we make. Their bid was competitive with the other bids we received. We experienced a lot of professionalism and thoroughness in dealing with them. We will update this posting if there are any issues (that Soil Solutions does not handle professionally) with the radon mitigation project or, if it happens, the sewer line replacement. read more

This review encompasses 6 years and covers the purchase and sale of my home. When I purchased the home Soil Solutions (SS) came and performed an oil tank search on my property. They didn't find an oil tank and sent me the map showing the areas they covered on my property. I thought it was a good $85 spent and filed away the map thinking I would never need it again. When I sold my house this spring another oil tank locating company who was solicited by the buyers of my home, that I will not name, said they found a tank on my property. I pulled out my map and sent it to the buyers showing them that SS had come out and not found a tank while their service wouldn't even provide a map showing where it they thought it was, they just "knew" it was there. I then contacted Tess at SS who was the project manager on my locate 6 years earlier and she had a team out to my property the next day to do another scan. They again found nothing, except for a gas line, that the other locating company thought was an oil tank. My buyers were still not convinced despite the lack of evidence from the other locating company. SS then came out and took probes 10 ft deep of the entire area where the other company said there was a tank and again found nothing. Finally my buyers were convinced they were being scammed by their company and accepted there there was not a tank in my yard. All of these tests, phone calls, and evidence were provided at no extra cost to me, just my $85 6 years earlier. It is rare that a company will stand by their work like SS did and didn't ask for a dime. Thank you I would recommend them to anyone. read more

I recommend the team at Soil Solutions. I was facing a situation with a non-conforming sewer issue with the City of Portland, they did a scope and report that helped me get the City to agree that I did not need to do a replacement afterall. I won't be hiring Soil Solutions to do any additional work at this time, but I would hire them in a snap if I did and here is why. They were the only company to engage with me on the problem and not leave me hanging waiting for a response. They scheduled the scope within a day. They kept in communication. They did the scope for a very reasonable price and turned in the report very quickly. Alex, the project manager I was working with advised me on how to proceed with the City. And ultimately seemed genuinely happy for me that I didn't have to spend thousands of dollars replacing a sewer that is ultimately in good condition just because it is non-conforming, despite the fact it meant I would not be hiring them. Everyone on the team I spoke with were pleasant, informative, and did not condescend to me - which has happened a lot with contractors as I am a female homeowner. I would not recommend using this company if you are getting your sewer replaced. The subcontracted that came out to do the work completed the job but did damage to my driveway, left backfill in what use to be a garden, bent a sprinkler head, and trimmed multiple branches and then left them in my yard. Lastly, there was not a porta potty for the worker to use so I offered for them to use mine if they need to. Noone took me up on it and then after there first day at my house I let my dog out to go to the bathroom and he rolled in human feces that was in the bushes! Soil solutions was not there to provide any oversight during the actual repair. They did come and scope the sewer again after everything was done. I did appreciate Nick hearing my concerns and sending someone out to powerwash my driveway to try to get rid of the gouges they put in my driveway. Also, he got the subcontractors to come remove the backfill. All in all they got the job done but I feel in really poor form. read more

I do not recommend this Company. At this time, I do not have all the names in front of me but the people who work for soil solutions do not communicate with one another, lack honesty, integrity, follow through, and when they break some thing, blame the other contractor for the problem. Too many work errors to list. When the problem leads back to them, the owner says their contract does not hold them responsible. They broke a water main when digging the hole and walked away without shutting down the water. I had already moved out of my home but when I returned two days later discovered my downstairs laundry room flooded. The Water Co. came out in the evening as an emergency call and discovered the broken pipe and shut down the water. He said,it was clearly damage from the digging by Soil Solutions. Soil Solutions still denied responsibility. I had to go to Multnomah County to discuss with them who they are licensing. With their backing, Soil Solutions finally paid for floor tile replacement and the repair of the pipe. However, they kept giving excuses of delay to complete the work so the soil from the digging sat on my lawn for over a month causing further damage they would not repair. I finally moved on and hired another company who had everything completed within four days. Stay away from this company or the stress will never end. read more
