Food choices for this spread were a chicken empanada , rotisserie chicken, white rice , and beans. Chimmichuri and mayo ketchup for dipping purposes. Also let's add the rabo (oxtail) con yucca. Just made a stop at this incredible plane in Torrington while visiting my daughter Bri. Balisha and Barbara Sweet us up for an amazing meal to go and while we were waiting they have us tasters. I have come here a few times for lunch. Dominican food. Cuban sandwich was just OK, I've had better. Another time, I went with the pork w/ rice & beans -- a bit skimpy on the meat portion, but overall, it was also OK. Also, they never answer the phone, it seems impossible to place a takeout order at the Sol Cafe (I've tried several times). I have limited time for lunch breaks while working, so I would've patronized this business much more in the past if they would just answer the phone. A weak 3 Star rating. I recommend trying Latin Cravings in Bristol, they do a superior job preparing this type of cuisine. read more

Hate that they say 30mins for your food wait , I arrive 1hour and a 1/2 later than 30mins to pick up and still have to wait anther 30mins always! That's ridiculous . While we were out and about in Torrington on the hottest day of the year (so far), Finance Friend decided we needed a refresher and started giving me directions. It wasn't long before we ended up in front of a small storefront on an empty street. "Trust me," she said, and led me inside. We were greeted immediately by Barbara, and we took seats at the counter. "Something tall, cold, and strong," Finance Friend ordered, and in short order, two glasses appeared before us. One was a mojito, but unlike one I had ever had before. While the requisite lime and mint flavors were there, they didn't overpower like many others I've had out, and there was a nice fruity component that made it even more refreshing. Even better, three types of rum went into it: the standard white, a nice Dominican dark, and a touch of Captain Morgan,which held everything together. The other was fruity and also rum based, and I couldn't remember the name at all (sorry). Both were delicious. Since we had just come from lunch, we settled for an order of chips and guacamole. These took some time to come out, as everything was made fresh to order. This was one of the best guacs I had had out, and the chips were still warm. A small bowl of salsa fresca was included, and there was enough to last us through a second round of drinks. While we didn't eat more that day, I scanned the menu board, and I vowed I had to return for a lunch someday. There are some specials, $8 for lunch, along with a wide variety of Latin specialties. Their menu has something for everyone, including burgers and a couple of Asian-influenced entrees. Prices are reasonable, and portions are ample, based on what I saw delivered to other patrons. The bright red and yellow decor, and the friendly servers, made this a delightful place to hide from the heat for a while. I'd definitely suggest putting this on your "must try" list. read more

We were told it would be ready at 7:15, but we it wasn't ready and hadn't even been started when we arrived to pick it up. I give this restaurant 5 stars! I read the service is slow, but honestly it's because there is one waitress who is also the bartender and she (Eba) is lovely. It is a small place w only about 5 tables. The food was superb and so were the margaritas! The chef, who I assume is also the owner and a very nice man, came out and gave us a sample of pigs feet because he heard that we wanted to try them - delicious ! You can tell everything is cooked to order and authentic. We would not hesitate to go back and recommend it to our friends and family! Went back to Sol again on July 31st , just as good as the first time! Sol was busy tonight. That is okay. I was told my order would be 25 minutes, so I waited around...and waited around. I ended up sitting inside for an hour. I believe they forgot my order entirely. Eventually I got my food and was not expecting this small of a portion. Quite frankly, it couldn't be 2 chicken tenders if you put the pieces of chicken together. I feel as if I paid $10 for rice and vegetables. They were backed up in the kitchen which I completely understand, but a portion of this size was not worth the wait. This little spot is simple Amazing! Everything we got today was so fresh and tasty! The tacos, tostones, pico de gallo, fried pork chop, roast pork which also came with white or yellow rice and beans and also a salad, and OMG this soup they had on their specials was unbelievably tasty! The service was great, the waitress was super sweet and accommodating. We ended up here by accident today as the place we had driven to Torrington to go to was unexpectedly closed, we were disappointed but we were so happy with the outcome. We are already planning our next trip to Sol, we wanted to try so many more things but with just me and hubby, we had already out done ourselves with everything we ordered. OK. Four-stars for food but SERVICE IS UNBEARABLY SLOW. There should probably be an intervention, for the sake of the establishment itself. I don't think I've had better seafood soup anywhere, but good god, man. Every other review is entirely correct. I will sit there for an unacceptably long stretch of time waiting for a simple meal, while other diners will be seated, served and leave before I even begin my entrée. I don't get it. The people here are very nice, so I hope they get their time management together. That said, the food is very tasty and the atmosphere is unique and comfortable. Downtown, no less! Not too shabby. I would normally rate three stars for such slow service, but the food is really good so I want to help balance out the average review here. read more

Went out for lunch on Sunday afternoon, and decided to bring my friends back to El Sol, since they all wanted to eat fresh latin food. I wrote a review not long ago regarding the customer service and the food being served at the restaurant. I have to say, three months after writing my review to this restaurant, they have improve so much... I was very pleased to be back at el Sol. The food was amazingly fresh and much better, our waitress was VERY attentive and friendly, and the environment was super nice. Everybody seemed to have been enjoying their food to the fullest. I was in love with my "Burrito Shimps" and the homemade fried tortilla chips, they were DELICIOUS!!! Good Job Sol's team. read more

Whenever in the Torrington area-- or just driving through-- we make a point to stop by this small restaurant on an unassuming side street. It's cozy inside, and the food's fresh and delicious.
