The decor of this restaurant so charmingly captures the vibes of a Greek island that it doesn't feel like you're in Connecticut when dining inside. The waitress kindly explained the menu since I'm not familiar with Greek food. Definitely recommended is Yia Yia's Chips. They were crisp and somehow not too greasy. The tzatziki dip that went with them was light and refreshing. I shared a Just Kalamaki platter with a friend. The chicken skewer was tender and flavorful, but the pork was more rare than I liked. (Just a personal preference.) The lemon fries were the right kind of sour and the pita bread was nicely toasted. For dessert, the mouth-watering slice of baklava was served warm. When you walk into YiaYia's, you are transported Straight to Santorini. The decor is beautiful and provides fantastic ambiance when dining. The service was great, offering suggestions and setting expectations that the kitchen is small and it may take a bit longer for food to come out. The Tirokafteri dip with pita was probably my favorite. Greek yogurt, feta and pepper with a little bit of heat blender to perfection. The Beet salad has a lovely fresh dressing that compliments the salad well. We felt the Chicken kalamaki was a bit dry and lacked flavor, however, we have every intention of returning and trying more so therefore, I couldn't see giving less than a 4.5. read more

Had a nice lunch at YiaYia's. There are no reservations and we got there at 1:15 pm on a Saturday and did not have a wait for a table although it was quite busy. Service was very good. We shared the Dip Platter - you choose three dips and we had the Kalamata spread, Hummus, and Tirokafteri (whipped feta, spicy peppers, dill, greek yogurt). So good and the warm pitas were addictive. Food: We ordered the Athenian shrimp for an appetizer. It was good, had a lot of sauce and a little spicy. We liked it. Might need to ask for more pita bread for the sauce. We had the pork souvlaki and lamb gyro for our mains. I had mine served with Greek fries. I really liked my gyro, my dad thought the pork was just okay. The portions were huge! I barely touched my fries and brought them home. We thought that the menu was a little limited because we normally order the lemon chicken soup and mousakka when we visit other restaurants. Ambiance: When you step inside, you're transported to Santorini. Stone floors, white walls, Greek music playing... I've been to Greece and it really felt like I was there. The restaurant is in a kind of strip mall. The parking lot is a little awkward because there seem to be some apartments in the back? There wasn't as much parking, either. My friends as I stopped by here for lunch as we were in the area during a little fall leaf peeping adventure. We were looking for a place nearby as we weren't familiar with the area and decided to stop by here because of all the great reviews! The ambiance here makes you feel like you're far far away from Torrington. The floral decor, the furniture, stone floors -- no details were spared here. This place is just so stunning! The kind waitress explained that the restaurant menu was developed to make you feel like you were at an authentic Greek taverna with lots of small dishes to snack on and enjoy a leisurely lunch or dinner. We opted for the whipped feta dip to share and it was divine. The pita was so pillowy soft and the best I've ever had. I ordered a chicken souvlaki for my meal and opted for the lemon potatoes. I've known for a while that Yia Yia's in Torrington would be my new favorite CT Greek restaurant as soon as I could make the almost one hour drive there. Even before it was Number 6 on the 2022 CT Yelp Top 25 Places to Eat List. Sometimes, you can just tell by the pictures people post, and how people describe their experience. I ordered Spanakopita, the Lamb Gyro platter and Baklava, and had PLENTY of leftovers. Yia Yia's did so many things at a high level. The feta on the Greek fries was flavorful and tender. The lamb for the gyro platter was a couple steps up. The spanakopita had perfect texture and taste. The density, garlic flavor and acidity of the tzatziki were right on. The tomatoes were peak ripe. The baklava was delicious and warm. Everything was terrific. In addition, service was friendly, efficient and helpful. And with its light colors and pillows, the inside was inviting. Looking for an authentic Greek hideaway cafe - then walk through the door. You are immediately transported to the Greek isles. Staff is friendly and attentive, restaurant is clean and organized. We decided to do a tapas still evening. Starting with a three dip platter of hummus, tzatziki, and tirokafteri (whipped feta with spicy peppers, dill, and Greek yogurt) Delicious!! The tzatziki and tirokafteri were OMG amazing. Definitely these were made by scratch that day. Ordered a second order of tirokafteri to take home. Then came the shrimp saganaki and Loukaniko - wasn't sure what to expect here. Shrimp dish was good, slightly over cooked and brought more of an Italian vibe but good. The Loukaniko is a homemade sausage with feta and tzatziki. The sausage by itself was missing some flavors but when eaten with the feta and tzatziki the dish was well balanced. Lastly we ordered the chicken kalamaki - aka chicken skewers. While the meat was cooked well, a very nice char, there was not any flavor and the skewers were very small. This was disappointing. The real disappointment here was the amount of food for the pricing. This would be a four star review if not for the pricing. This is everything we ordered then add a dessert for $9 and our check came to over $80. The highlights for this restaurant are the authenticity of the food and the dips, the downfalls (at least for this visit) were the proteins and pricing. read more

They charge $2 extra for the feta and oregano, but they make the fries so much better. Feta in general is a premium addon, but they should name the restaurant Feta. They take it to the next level. The service was prompt and perfect. A truly outstanding meal, but pricey, too pricey for my budget. I won't be back unless I get a windfall, but I'm very glad I went. Everything about the experience was great. But I'm retired. I can't do a $30 meal (with tip). If you have the money, I can't think of a better place to spend it. I had never heard of this place but it was chosen as our April restaurant. One a month the #foodfanatics get together to a try a new restaurant. When you walk in you are transformed to an actual bistro in Greece. This got me excited right away. Our waiter Christian was fantastic. He answered every question we had and had fun interacting with us all night. The food: Delicious! This is the first time I've tried octopus. I would definitely try it again. We got the hummus dip with pita triangles as another appetizer. For the main course we ordered chicken gyro with regular fries and a chicken gyro platter with Greek fries. I didn't try the cheese on the fries but my friend said they were better without. That is the only dislike. Simply Authentic dishes. We tried as many as possible. We looked like we haven't eaten in a day or two. All sizes are plentiful and the taste was incredible. With whitewashed wall & furniture, slate floor, and colorful flowers, artwork, and and accent pieces, one definitely feels like they are far away from Torrington, CT. Everything we ordered was tasty and delicious: Hummus Grape leaves Yia Yia's Chips-lightly fried eggplant & zucchini with tzatziki dip. Perfection! Lamb Gyro Platter - note this is a platter to share. With the appetizers, my son and I had plenty left over. Next time I will have to try the Greek Salad and Falafel. We were stuffed! Where to begin??? I think my first shout-out needs to be to the amazingly light, fluffy, and herb-topped pita bread, the best I have ever had. Wait, no, the spanakopita, which was above and beyond most restaurant's, with a fantastically flaky crust and well-flavored spinach interior. Or was it our perfectly spiced entrees, flavorful without being overwhelming? Oh no, it might have been the tzatziki, which was thick and rich and *perfect*. We came on a Friday night around 6:30 and had to wait around 30 minutes for a table (which is always a good sign). You are transported to the Mediterranean immediately upon walking in. From the whitewashed walls to the flowers on the ceiling you can't help but feel like you're in Greece! We sat at the bar and started with drinks and an appetizer- the grape leaves were amazing! Once we were seated we all shared the kalamata spread, whipped feta, and hummus. All were great but my favorite was the kalamata spread! The pita served with the dips was so fresh. For my meal I had the falafel souvlaki and upgraded to the Greek fries (fries topped with feta and oregano). Upgrading the fries was totally worth it in my opinion! My son has been wanting to try YiaYia's out for quite sometime and this was the day! We started out with the Tirokafteri dip and cheese filled balls with a spicy sauce on top. The pita bread was scrumptious, neither of us loved the cheese based dip, feta was too salty for us. The cheese balls with spicy sauce were delicious. He had a lamb gyro for lunch and I had chicken skewers with tzatziki sauce, both were good solid lunch items. My son wasn't a fan of the fries, but thoroughly enjoyed the gyro. We brought one home for Dad to enjoy! Dessert was baklava and kataifi. The baklava was delicious, neither of us were a fan of the kataifi. Wow. Just wow. Thank you Yelp Connecticut for listing this as one of the top 10 places to eat in Connecticut. Admittedly, I was slightly nervous that the hype would make my expectations too high and it wouldn't measure up. However, this place FAR exceeded my expectations. The 3 dip appetizer was fresh and wonderful. The tzatziki was perfectly spicy and zesty. The hummus was so flavorful and not bland like it sometimes can be. Not pictured is the spanakopita which we inhaled. It was the most delicious spanakopita I have ever had. So good! The Yia Yia's Chips were similar to Viron Rondos famous Mother's Chips. Not my fave but not gross, just enjoyed other items better. The skewers were so flavorful and the fries were literally perfect and crisp. Let's also talk about that baklava. Ordinarily, I'm not a baklava person at all but THIS little slice of warm amazingness was just spectacular. The spices were so warm and autumn-ly. It was like baklava and fried dough had a baby. I would go back just for the baklava, really! Mmm! I love Greek food. I've been to a few restaurants in Connecticut and this is hands down my favorite Greek spot now! Place is very good greek food, but pricy. Was in the area for a Renaissance Faire, looked up some of the most popular spots in the area and this one was top of the list. Saw that they had a full 5 stars with 130 reviews, and that was good enough for me to want to give them a try. Outside, feels like a small house. There was a guy outside pulling weeds out of the parking lot, which I assume was an owner since he was maintaining the grounds and taking phone calls outside. Inside, the place is very well designed and it feels like a quaint little bistro in the middle of greece. uneven but level stone floors, greek signs for bathroom markers, a kitchen cupboard for the server hutch. Everything is well designed and layed out to give you a feeling of being at a cafe in greece without going there. The server was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable in their offerings. The one thing that I did find a little awkward was the repeating of ordered items even if I would butcher the greek version of the word. Like the whipped feta, I would call it whipped feta and I would be corrected to Tirokafteri. That word keeps going to TikTok for me, so whipped feta was easier. But the server was insistent that I use Tirokafteri, and I can only say that word if I go to google and copy/paste it from there. Got to give them points for immersion, I suppose. The food, it's executed well and prepared well. There's surprisingly not a lot of proteins or main dishes on the menu. There's meat skewers and gyros, then it's all dips and small plates from there. It's fine for us, we usually do tapas anyways. but it was weird. The dips were the star of the show. Lots of flavor and all unique. The hummus was spicy but mashed well, had a nice smooth texture. The whipped feta was great, salty but potent and creamy. The taziki was great as well, fresh and tangy while not being overly savory or oily. The meat was a little lackluster. The chicken was charred on a wood stove but it was lacking seasoning. The shrimp were buried in spicy tomato sauce but lacked depth. It was tomato sauce and shrimp, but not much else. Weirdly the feta on that one wasn't as salty as the fresh stuff. The price was high, ending up coming out to 80 for the dips, apps, and skewers. It's an experience place, but it's up there Overall, it's a good food option for the area. If you're looking for true authentic Greek food with no customization for the American pallet. Very limited menu. Overpriced. I've had way better Greek food at festivals. I hate their habit of stuffing fries in their gyros. When I kindly asked them to not do that (because let's be honest, it's filler and results in less of everything that should be in a gyro) they got a tad huffy and defensive, telling me that is how "Greeks" do it. We decided to head over for a quick dinner before a show at the Warner theater. It's tucked away at the end of a plaza. What a beautiful, colorful, thoughtful restaurant. It's like you are walking into a coastal Greek home. White and turquoise are the main colors, with the most darling look inside. It's smaller but perfect for date night! The staff was very kind and knowledgeable of the menu....We ordered the beet salad and lamb gyro to split. I wish I had taken pictures, but we were hungry and on a time limit. The beet salad has still been on my mind. It was so good. A thick layer of house made yogurt on the bottom, large cut golden and red beets circled around the edge, and a large pile of arugula was lighted dressed in the middle. It was so simple yet so good. When I come to a restaurant, these are the menu items that I desire. It tasted like family made it and left a lasting impression. I could eat this frequently. Lamb gyro was perfect for two and was seasoned perfectly with a side of crispy fries. Everything was very fresh and cooked perfectly. We love this place. Any time we are in Torrington we have to stop here. Their gyros are always good but there are two things that steal the show. 1.) The Brussel sprouts are an absolute must. So simple but so good. It is also a side that stays good as a takeout item. 2.) The French fries are amazing. I honestly crave them sometimes.
