I love going to sol! The proportions are super big so one meal equals almost three for me!

Sol is pretty close to our house so we find ourselves getting dinner here 2-3 times a month. The food is pretty good for the price, but the service has always been just ok. We stopped getting "dine in" at the restaurant earlier this year after we had a bad experience. We didn't get our food for over an hour, while folks who had come in before us were getting theirs. Since then we've switched to "take out" and had moderate success at getting what we wanted in a timely manner, until tonight. I placed an online order and it told me I could pick up my food 30 minutes later. They are usually 5-10 minutes later than their site suggests, so I planned accordingly and showed up 5 minutes after the given time. It wasn't ready when I got there, but they said they'd call my name when it was. No big deal, except 30 minutes later I was still waiting...I was the ONLY ONE WAITING! I had to go up to them and ask for my order, which they materialized upon my request. No explanation of why it took over an hour to make a burrito and a salad. Not that it really matters. I can drive to Orland and back for Mexican food if I want it at that speed. Luckily there are many more options in Chico, so I won't need to come back here. read more

Third time here and never again. Table was not very cleaned. Greasy surface with crumbs. food was luke warm and greasy, they took it back and nuked it which made it more luke warm and tough. Very disappointed since we do want to support local restaurants that are open. But not going back. read more

While the food was good and the staff were friendly, we expected them to be masked because that's what the website says: "Health & safety: Mask required · Staff wear masks." Food it Awesome. They have the best chili rellano in Chico and I've been looking for 14years! My only complaint and I'm hoping management reads this, is that they do Not know how to roll corn tortillas in foil. The way they roll them they end up breaking apart and getting hard. I have gone to Sol multiple times over the years.. it's pretty dependable we're good tasty food. However,I was really disappointed with this recent visit. I ordered three shrimp tacos which I've had before and I've always been good. But this time I got guacamole that with oxidize, there was crunchy bits of something in my taco which I'm pretty sure it was burnt... I just wasn't good and it was really disappointing from what I'm used to from them. It might be a while before I go back it was pretty bad read more

First time we went the food was super yummy! 2nd time we went back and I ordered the same meal cheese enchiladas and the cheese isn't even melted and the food was just cold. Very disappointed since we dove far to eat here. Before I would have recommended this place now I wouldn't because places shouldn't be a hit or miss to eat here. read more

I've resisted writing this review, but yesterday was the last straw for me. Sol was one of my favorite places to eat when it opened years ago. It has only become worse over time; especially after the original owner sold the business. Yesterday, we ordered two chorizo breakfast burritos minus the tortillas for takeout. We were surprised by what we received when we sat down to eat at home. The menu advertises three eggs in each burrito. Since our burritos came in a bowl we could easily see that each of ours had only one egg. They made up for this by filling the bowl with potatoes though. To be specific, tater tots; something we had not in previous bowls. Topping off the experience was the piece of plastic chorizo casing that was cooked into the food. I concur with other reviews about the inconsistency of the food. That's my main issue too and will redirect my business elsewhere. read more

I went on a Monday afternoon after work and there were only two other people there so it was quick and quiet. I got the enchilada plate with carne asada and pinto beans. It also came with avocado slices and crema in the enchiladas. I was not expecting the enchiladas to be fried and I've never had them like that, but it was pretty good! It wasn't very spicy even though he said it was going to be, so idk if they forgot to add spice or if their customers have low spice tolerance. Lol. Now that I live down the street I'll definitely be coming back. read more

Great food and staff but needs to update their menu. They have changed somethings and is misleading.

Don't order the Chile relleno it was so over done I couldn't cut through it, and the batter on the outside of the Chile was fried to a crisp. When I asked an individual if he was the manager he said no, though I knew already that he was. Lier, lier pants on fire!! I was asked if I want another one I said "no" they couldn't get the first one right I wasn't so sure the cook could do any better with a second one. I just said maybe the individual cooking should work on their Chile Relleno skills, super disappointing especially for the price. The food others ordered that I was with was just so, so. My wife and I frequent SOL . I always get the same thing ... the enchilada plate. This time I decided to try something different and tried the beef fajitas. The plate arrived and everything was cold and the the fajitas looked miserable. They took my plate back and then I noticed there was no seasoning whatsoever and the beef was just little chunks. I've had Fajitas before at other establishments and I certainly will not be ordering these again. read more

I got a carne asada burrito and it was good. The tortilla, rice, and beans were perfectly soft. I regret not getting spicy tho. And I wish there was just a little more meat. The price I think was $6.50. You can get chips and salsa for free on the side. The chips were nice and crispy. Would go back to try something else. read more

For Mexican food with a Cali twist, this is the place. Prices are affordable, but I just don't get the set up with ordering at the register, having 3 separate areas to eat at...it just cheapened the experience. The service was ho-hum and seeing as Sol was "opened in mid-April 2011 by a couple of experienced local restaurateurs--Jon Meyer (co-owner of La Cocina Economica and former owner of Jedidiah's) and Geoffrey Akers (a former GM for both the Black Crow and Chipotle, and once the personal chef for actor Michael Douglas)" you'd think they'd know better. As some of the other commenters have pointed out, service is sometimes an issue and if lack of staffing is the problem, that should be easily remidied. Especially with the background of this place's owners. Food was good. Not smashing, but good. Agree that the portions are small. I also find it weird that nachos come with just sprinkled cheese that isn't melted. Up in the air about giving it a second chance. read more

This place used to be great but they have gone downhill quickly. The food quality has been compromised by poor and cheaper quality. When I ordered a carne asada burrito I received limited beef but received to much gristle and fat. I removed the "beef" and ate beans and rice. Such a shame to see a once fine establishment go down so quickly. Chico needs a good quality Mexican restaurant like the one on Durham. read more

No fat or grissel on the chicken or beef...full of flavor...lettuce was crunchy and cold which contrasted the beef, chicken and beans beautifuly...the sour cream tasted fresh and the tortilla held together without getting soggy. Omg best margaritas In town! It's a hidden gem now, I don't even want to share this because it's my go to spot for a less college crowded bar. The bartender will make anything you suggest and it's not your basic syrup with liquor. Everything is fresh and delicious but yet so cheap! Bartender is the best, makes drinks delicious and not too sugary! I come sometimes just for the drinks! Try the mango & chamoy marg or michelada! read more

Went for dinner here yesterday with a large group (13) after a soccer game at the rec park down the street. We were able to find seating right away. I loved that you order at the counter and then they bring food and drinks to you. It makes it super convenient when you come in groups. There is plenty of free Parking and the place is really nice but casual at the same time. I ordered their tostada salad which doesn't make sense because the tostada is at the bottom of the salad so it gets soggy. Everything else was delicious especially their southwest dressing (tangy and spicy). Everyone was happy with their food choices and the sangria was delicious! It's fresh Mexican which is more like Dos Coyotes Cafe or a better Chipotle but not super authentic. The service was amazing but it took a while to get our food. Expect to wait 15 min for your food to come out during peak times. read more

Today it's a 2 star as we've been coming here a long time and since Covid it's a hit or miss. I literally drained a 1/2 cup of water off my taco salad into a pile of napkins. When I made mention of this to a gal at the cashier area she said, "they just didn't drain the lettuce ".. ok so I'm supposed to be okay with your shortcomings? No offer to fix or anything? If you like Chipotle you will probably like this place. If you like authentic Mexican food as in Casa Lupe, you will not. The enchiladas were so-so, the southwestern tostada dressing was sour. The food was luke warm when delivered to our table. All in all, have no desire to return. read more

This is one of those places that I really WANT to rate higher, but had such stumbles that I just can't bring myself to give higher than 3 stars. The pros: Food was amazing. Nice variety, good portions, everything was really tasty and satisfying. Really good chips, really good salsa, great guac. Their margaritas are solid and their infused tequillas are really yummy. Staff were all just amazingly friendly and helpful. The cons: The layout is a hot mess, especially during a rush time. Where do you order? Who knows! They did NOT have their sh*t together....between every order, the girl was running to the opposite side of the restaurant to get table numbers or chips or glasses......it was weird and very disorganized. The line took forever, mainly because it seemed like everything she needed was at the other register. We had to ask for everything we ordered, it never came. Four of us ordered together and two of us got our food............and waited 10 minutes until we finally went and asked where the rest of our parties food was. They messed up our drink orders (but were very nice about fixing them). If the food wasn't so good, I would have been REALLY annoyed. But, the food was great, so I left only moderately annoyed. But still......they really need to fix their systems and maybe buy some more dang table numbers. I'd love to try them again, but I don't think I will until I hear they've streamlined their systems. My favorite! Their food is very delicious, I've tried a variety of their meals - every time it's good. They also have drinks, if wanting some alcohol. My favorite is the chicken enchiladas. But Chile verde is just as good. My husband always gets the burritos, he really enjoys it. They can get pretty at night so it can get tricky to find a seat. They do have seating in both of their ordering stations, as well as outside ( their outdoor heaters do the job!) read more

As far as Tex Mex style food goes this place is good, not amazing, but good. I definitely think this spot lands at around 3 or 3.5 stars and that some higher quality foods might bump it up to a four. The nachos were good and I even liked the Nacho cheese on them. The absolute best thing to eat here are the churros. I have no idea where they order there churros from or if they make them from scratch in store but they are amazing. The horchata was a bit too creamy and tasted more like a milk shake. Overall the food here tastes good but only the churros really stood out to me. I seriously need to know where I can get the recipe or order them in bulk. read more

Ordered carne asada burrito for my teenage son, he loved it & it was a pretty good size. I ordered steak fajitas, it came with rice & beans & 3 small corn tortillas. I was going to buy a mandarin jarrittos, but it was $2.75!! It was a to-go order. I called it in, they said 10 min & it was ready when i got there! They have a separate cashier for to-go orders which is very convenient because they are known to get get pretty busy. I have been to Sol a number of times over the last 3 yrs and have not been disappointed. Alcohol is a more little pricey than most places serving it from a fridge straight from the case. There is a nice facility they use for larger groups & i believe there is a separate bar in there, but i have never entered. Over all I like Sol, the food is good, the price is reasonable for the portions served. Alcoholic & non-alcoholic beverages are way over-priced! I'm so disappointed I can't help but be angry. The girl over the phone was really nice when i asked to for a carnitas burrito to go. I asked for traditional super burrito which she referred me to the supreme burrito I wanted guacamole and sour cream in it. Upon getting my burrito it was filled with rice barely any meat and was all together really salty. In addition to I asked for a horchata which was warm. This was my first and last visit to this unofficial Mexican food restaurant! I'll stick to the taco trucks which have much more flavor other than rice and salt! $20 later and although I tried to eat most of it I just feel cheated. read more

Have eaten here on and off for a few years. Usually, the food is good, not great as it can be hit or miss. Quality control is something they don't have. Ate there last night and got a chicken burrito after taking about an hour for us to get our food my chicken burrito was mostly rice. It will be a long time before I go back and eat there seeing how the last time I ate there I got their Sol Bowl and it too lacked meat. I am not sure but it seems since Chico has been overrun with people from the fires almost all restaurants I have gone out to eat at lately have all gone to shit! We decided to give this place a try as I was passing through on business. The atmosphere is very cool and comfortable. It's clean, comfortable and trendy. The menu is very simple. Customer service was so-so. The girls behind the counter were just standing there and seemed pre occupied. My order came out 5-7 minutes after my girlfriend order and during that time one of the girls kept bringing me other orders... The food was OK. I ordered one enchilada with cheese and another with chicken. Flavor was good but the food had been sitting. My dish came with black beans & rice. This place is good. It is not my favorite Mexican place in Chico nor do I feel it is authentic. That being said, I like their salsa bar, I get exactly what I order, and it is relatively well priced.
