I've used Keith twice now for a one purchase and one refinance. When I first found him with Solmortgage a couple years ago for a purchase I was skeptical that his deal was too good to be true. I checked every lender I could and they couldn't believe how good the deal was with Keith. This time I needed to refinance and he was far and away the best deal out there. I looked everywhere I could and picked apart every detail. I've given his contact info to everybody I know that needs a lender and several have used him with the same results. Getting a mortgage through Sol was a simply awful experience. They were disorganized and on multiple occasions I had better records of what was going on than they did. At one point they doubled the down payment requirement, then later told me it was just a misunderstanding, which allowed me to experience the emotional roller coaster of having my dream home, not having it, then having it again. The only reason I am giving them 2 rather than 1 star is that they did ultimately come through and get my loan taken care of under some moderately unique circumstances. I would say that if they have the best rate; you keep meticulous records of your finances; you are willing to keep on top of them through the entire process; and you have no medical conditions that are exasperated by rage, then by all means go for it. However, if you want someone to just take care of things for you and make things go easily, then I would find someone else. read more

I would absolutely not recommend this company. We went through them to do a refinance for our home. We got everything in immediately and they took so long to do their job that we lost our rate which was locked in for 30 days. Not only this, but they added charges and points when that was never discussed and just sent over docs to be signed without a word. We would email them asking for clarification or for the status of the refinance and they would often take 4 or 5 days to respond. Absolutely unacceptable, especially when dealing with a deadline. When they lost our rate they again didn't even communicate it and just sent us paperwork to sign with significantly different numbers than what was originally discussed. An absolute scam! They took zero responsibility for losing our rate and we did not get to refinance because of their inability to do their job. read more

They requested entirely too much documentation and after insisting that I participate in 3rd party verification of a loan on a investment property, they "couldn't find the 3rd party verification" There gimmick is they drag out the process so that you won't be able to close on time and they rack of the fees. read more

SOL Mortgage and Mike Schmidt are great to work with. Used to buy a house in VA and their process, not to mention their basically no-fee application process (except for the required appraisal), was as straight-forward as you will ever encounter during home buying. Mike was super professional and quick to respond to inquiries. He dealt with the seller's agent during the appraisal process and gave us a ton of options for getting the best financing that we could get. They have a nice online system for uploading documentation as well. Their rates were very competitive, in fact almost a qtr less than Bank of America and Wells Fargo. I would definitely recommend them, especially if you are a first-time buyer and feeling overwhelmed with the process and paperwork required. In reality the only documentation needed were a couple of paystubs, a couple of bank statements and couple of tax returns. I think the only other item was home owners insurance for the new (and in our case existing properties). read more

This is a review based on our just beginning journey with SOL. We are getting a VA jumbo loan through SOL. We began our journey with SOL just a few days ago when I saw an amazing through Bankrate.com. We called them up, initially left a message on a Sunday. I hadn't heard back, so I dialed them again on Monday. I spoke to Israel who gave me an over the phone quote matching that of Bankrates. He emailed me the preliminary rate and the link to their online application. We filled it out on Tuesday night. Since we hadn't heard back, I called Israel on Thursday. He informed me that they did receive our application but were a bit swamped. He informed me that my loan officer would be Keith Barney, and to expect contact from him by end of day. Well Keith did call me back, and got the remaining information he needed. By Friday, we were awaiting the escrow company to send over the fees so that we could lock in our rate. Chicago Title Company was apparently very swamped and by 2pm had still not sent over the information. Keith worked on getting the rate locked without the escrow fees since it was out of our control that Chicago hadn't sent the information. By 3pm on Friday we we're locked in thanks to Keith advocating for our special circumstance. We are extremely happy as our rate is 4.125% and as of this morning I cannot find anything anywhere lower than 4.5% for a VA jumbo loan. TO BE CONTINUED... read more

I do NOT recommend this loan processor. I would give them zero stars if that were possible. I'm 69 years old, and I've had several mortgages, but this one was the most frustrating of all. It took almost 2 months from start to finish. I was lured in at first by the promise of low processing costs. I was told I would not need an appraisal because I was only borrowing 25% of the house value. Then I was told I DID need an appraisal for $600. Then the price was raised to $750. The person handling the paperwork admitted she forgot to order an appraisal, and then they pressured me to hurry up and schedule the appraisal because they forgot to order it. I was lied to and deceived on several occasions. I asked my agent to have his manager call me 3 or 4 times to no avail. Finally the manager sent me an email saying he was too busy to talk to me. The closing papers were wrong twice and the closing had to be rescheduled. The closing office was very frustrated with them also. Do NOT use this loan processor. read more
