I've been coming to ERA89 for haircuts for maybe 3-4 years now. Richard is amazing! He's always super quick to respond to messages regarding scheduling and he's able to work with my more limited availability. His prices are fair and I always love my cut (and the experience is usually pretty quick). He's also super chill to talk to during the cut. I had a pretty traumatic haircut experience prior to meeting Richard where the lady chopped my hair way, way shorter than I asked because she said it was "healthier" for it. I came to Richard apprehensive because of this experience but he always cuts the hair a little longer for me and adjusts as we go, which I really appreciate. I've also had him color my hair a few times as well. Both of these experiences were positive and while I'm back to my natural color again, if I ever decided to go dark again, I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to Richard. This is one of those places where you walk into a building and there are multiple small salons in their own unit. Chloe and Richard work side by side in their one unit. Change root color $100, balayage ~$150-200. Chloe did an amazing job, she delivered on what I wanted which is lightened hair by 2 shades and caramel highlights. She was not only a great listener in regards to what I was looking for but also gave advice so the look would be seamless. They use Japanese products for hair and they make your hair look stunning and silky. She's my new favorite hairstylist in the area. read more

Richard has been cutting my hair for a couple of years now. My hair is waist length and slightly wavy, and he is very thorough with communicating how much I want to cut off. If I just want a trim to get rid of split ends he always shows me exactly how much he recommends cutting off for healthy hair. Chloe as a person is very informative and helpful, and recommends good affordable products. HOWEVER, this review is based purely on the results of the hair coloring process, which unfortunately has been a frustrating process overall. The first time I came in I asked for a pastel cool-toned lavender, which of course she told me would be impossible with the first session since my hair was dark brown. We settled for a darker version of the picture I showed her, with a pink melt at the ends. The end result looked fine in the studio but as soon as I went out in the sunlight I was shocked at how brassy and red it looked. I texted her this and she kindly offered to fix it at no cost, so I went back in and we toned it the same without the pink. Again it came out a must different shade than I originally intended, but I figured it was because we only bleached it once. A few weeks later I sent her an updated picture of the fading process. One side was purple and the other was red! I was so over the annoyed at my hair and almost afraid to go out in public... so I texted her again, and she offered to fix it for me (2nd bleach & tone) at a discounted rate ($200) to lighten and even it out. So I went back for a THIRD time in hopes of finally getting close to the hair I'd imagined. She used the Pulp Riot Violet hair color, and after I got my hair done and did a lot of research on how other hair stylists use it. They tended to use a combination of 2 or 3 colors to achieve the desired purple. She only used the violet color, and so of course it turned out to be a very INTENSE VIOLET, saturated tone. I felt like a 2012 goth chick, rather than the muted trendy purple I wanted. I was yet again super disappointed, but it's hard for me to say I hate something when I know the person worked so hard on it. Also, there wasn't much we could do at that point. TL;DR don't ask for fashion colors here because the results will vary. read more

He's been my hair stylist for over a year now and he's managed to cut and style my hair the way I want while exceeding my expectations each and every time! I never get anxious before a hair cut because he's completely won my trust time and time again. I've gotten the following done within a year's span of time: *A little known fact about my hair before I start ranting and raving about how amazing Richard's skills are. My hair texture is probably the worst texture to have. It's neither here nor there. It's part kinky and part straight so I basically look like Mufasa from The Lion King if I shower in the morning and let it dry throughout the day. I need to shower at night time in order for it to be tamed... which leads me to the first point, Magic straight! - Magic straight: Richard has the technique down. I've gotten magic straight for many years from many different salons but my hair would always be over processed, brittle, and over time, extremely damaged. Richard is the first person who actually timed the treatment perfectly and even a year later, my hair is healthy and straight (besides the parts that are grown out). - Hair color: from Ash to Auburn to Dark Brown I've tried several colors and each time came out great! I hate orange hues to my hair dye so I would tell him and he would advise me on which colors would turn out great for my hair. - Keratin treatment: This treatment really helps lock in moisture and give unbelievable shine to my hair. After all those times I dye and perm my hair, it needs a little keratin love. - Hair cuts/trims: He cuts exactly the length I tell him to cut. No more and no less. Of course he gives me certain suggestions but in the end really respects my decision. He's good. Real good. He makes my hair look like it's naturally beautiful, shiny, and straight. They were fine but between language barriers, stuck up attitudes and just unimpressive cuts I thought I was destined to never find a stylist. Then I found Richard... I came here for a two reasons...one, my friend Susan's review (hi Susan!!!) and Robin at Beauty Call (see my review of her later) recommended Richard. Richard was friendly, professional and talented. My bf has a funny shaped head so it's really hard to give him a flattering haircut. Richard knew what to do and he listened and gave positive feed back. My bf really liked his haircut and it's the only one his mom approved of. Mine turned out great as well. Mine was simple - a trim, thinned at the bottom, and long bangs. He did exactly what I asked for. He was personable... a pretty great conversationalist actually, and I never once felt pressured or judged. He asked if I had a preference on which one of them dyed my hair, which I thought was very considerate of him and I told him that I was hoping Chloe was available. I've been to lots of different salons over 15 years, and this is the first time I've found someone who cuts my hair exactly how I want it. I get my hair cut by Richard, and he's been nothing but excellent. In the past (with other salons), no matter how specific I am with my instructions, my hair would either get cut too short or I would have to touch it up at home. With Richard, I always leave the salon extremely happy with my hair. Setting up appts. is easy well, as I can just text him. I am absolutely impressed with Chloe. When I first sat down in the chair after a wash and a deep conditioning treatment, the first thing she asked me was "What is bothering me with my current hair?" Most stylists would ask "what type of cut you want?" and go about their business, cutting the hair that you mentioned but not diving deeper into whether that hairstyle fits your needs. Chloe did just the opposite, she dived deep into what I didn't like, how I dry my hair, with a brush or not, how I normally wear my hair, my typical routine... and she worked her magic around to "cut" my hair to my liking. She gave me tips and tricks about my own hair that I knew nothing about, such as how certain part of my hair grows in a certain way and it has to be cut more strategically. Who knew?! Hair Cut: He was very honest about the damage in my hair, and gave me his honest recommendation without trying to swindle me or up-sell me like other hair stylists are know to do. Not only this, the actual haircut was exactly the length I had asked for. Not to mention, once it was complete, my hair felt so much nicer and healthier! 2. Hair Color: I've only gone to him for a roots touch up. I went to get my hair trimmed/thinned out, get bangs, and a slightly ashy balayage by Richard and am extremely happy with the results. He listened to what I wanted to achieve while giving me his advice. Normally I get really nervous with people cutting my bangs, but he did exactly what I wanted which was a long side swept that can also be curled to lay straight as well. My color turned out very subtle and natural and I love it because I wanted something low maintenance in the meantime while I'm in school. On the contrary, what I loved about Brush Salon is that I got a quality haircut without the ego that normally comes with other high end salons. That being said, here are some tips: 1. Ask for Richard! Richard has been cutting my hair for a while now and I have yet to be disappointed. The best thing about him is that he aims to give you the best version of what you ask for instead of using you as his personal muse. It also always helps when a stylist can actually carry on conversation instead of 15 minutes of silence as they run their fingers through your hair. 2. They take walk-ins but make an appointment. Especially if you are trying to request Richard (please see above), because there is no guarantee you will get the stylist you want. 3. If you need a pick me up, ask Richard about his dating experiences. He has some of the funniest stories. (This one is totally optional, but also highly recommended.) Overall, this is a great place to get exactly what you need: a good haircut and non-awkward conversation. After going through multiple stylists trying to find someone that can finally get my A-line right, I randomly came across Richard in 2013 and have been following him from salon to salon since! He's really good at listening to how exactly you want your hair done, but also throws in his suggestions from time to time without being too pushy (like other stylists!). My color/cut requests are pretty weird but Richard always happily complies and does a great job at it too. If I'm not exactly sure how I want a certain part of my hair to be cut or colored, I always leave it up to Richard because he has a great eye for what looks good and what doesn't. People often compliment my hair and its unique style/color, and it's all thanks to Richard! Also, I love how relaxing the environment at Sola is. Because of the size, there's usually only 1 other customer there at most, so you don't have to deal with all the chatter and noise that you usually hear at most other salons.
