The tables were placed very close to each other and it gets noisy too so it's not a place for you if you want a somewhat private vibe. When I made the reservation I was aware that there's a 2 hour limit for the dinner, but we ordered a lot of food compared to other tables so we did not slow down eating or anything and I actually forgot about that rule, and when 2 hour limit was up and our server gave us a dessert menu one of the higher ranking waiters said in a rude tone that our time was up and we had to hurry up, and almost signaled us to leave. Yes, it was our fault that we passed the time limit but we were not reminded about this when we ordered so much food, plus, couldn't the message be nicely communicated since after all we were the customers? * * * FOOD * * * Octopus Galician Style: A- Nice thing about this dish was the octopus being very soft and tender and each slice was very thinly cut. It's less crunchy than what I expected, and the butter taste didn't get too much into the lobster meat, resulting in a towards bland flavor. Grilled Cod Fish: B+ It was nicely grilled, crunchy on the outside and soft inside, a bit salty and actually a bit gamey - I have no problem with gamey meat but I wouldn't expect it from a high end restaurant such as this place. Mains were codfish & John Dory, very tasty Service was exceptional...the wait staff were all attentive, very friendly. We did not have a reservation but they were able to accommodate us. The food is okay but the overall experience so bad that we would never consider going back. First of all, the table is set with a meat and cheese plate, another cheese, olives and bread, all of which cost extra if you touch them. They fail to warn you about this. We ordered a 24 Euro bottle of wine; the waiter came back after a while saying they were out of it. He suggested a 69 Euro bottle; we politely demurred. When presented with the bill the waiter twice reminded us that the tip was not yet included. Having read a couple mixed reviews I was a little skeptical about dining here but after speaking to several locals after our first day here, I can see why it's one of the top restaurant favorites and packed til close. The only reservation we were able to get was at 9:15pm (which we made day of) and I was worried that they would be out of all the good stuff, but when we arrived we were seated fairly quickly and were able to order everything we wanted. For 4 people here is what we ordered. To start: Octopus Galician Style - very tender and fresh Clams cooked in white wine - if I were to pick between this and the Octopus, this would prevail. Simple dish but very tasty and again, very fresh. Entrees to Share: Grilled Tiger Prawns - we ordered two and each person got a half. I honestly could've eaten 5 by myself it was so good! But after everything we ate tonight, half a portion was enough for me. Rice with Shelled European Lobster - I enjoyed this dish but it was probably one of the only dishes our table agreed it was slightly on the salty side. Lobster was fresh and plenty. Really enjoyed that it's not overly heavy and thick like a risotto and not too liquid like a soup. It had a great texture to it. Baked Seabream - they prepare this with a Ton of salt then put it in the oven. When they serve they take the skin off so it's not overly salty and kept a lot of the moisture in. We were already full by this dish but it was very nicely prepared. Wine selection: very good I know some people complain about the price, i thought it was very fair and if I got this meal back home in LA I know I would've had to pay an extra leg for what we ordered. If I could give them a zero I would. Had unexpected surgery and could not travel. Called one week prior to reservation to cancel. The confirmation email clearly indicates to call the make any changes. Day of reservation I was charged $150 euro no show fee. I quickly disputed this with the restaurant give day of call and person I spoke with. I was told cancellations could only be made via email. After some back and forth, I provided them with email stating to call with changes. I was then told there was nothing I could do unless I showed proof of a call from My company phone line. This place is an experience and a must while you are in Lisbon. First of all it is very, very difficult to get a reservation. Our hotel tried for three days to get us in and finally one of the managers that had a connection at the restaurant was able to get us a table. The place is very clean and ran very well, the staff is trained and seasoned, they speak English and they are knowledgeable of dishes and specials. There is a huge tank in the restaurant where you can pick your "catch of the day" or order from the regular menu. Appetizers were tasty the fresh, seafood as well, and I probably had the most delicious flan at this place. The overall bill with a bottle of wine under 80 euros, so very good price. Please, get a reservation in advance otherwise you will not get in this place and you should go and have a meal here. You can't go wrong with wine in Portugal. There's no reason to spend a lot of money- there's plenty of great wine to be had for under €20. The bread was very good and was replenished. The olives, cheese and ham we're excellent. I regret that we didn't try the shellfish appetizer. We all had seafood. My wife got an order of shrimp in garlic sauce. You enter through a store front that is lit up like Saks- Blue light, ice, and full of a dramatic display of seafood- Crab, oysters, fish..and a bubbling tank of enormous blue lobsters the size of cats. We ordered the live European lobster risotto with very high expectations, partially due to their high reviews, Michelin recommendation, and high price. In the end, it turned out to be so salty that we did not want to finish it. On the other hand, the bottle of white wine we ordered tasted good and the service was also good. This restaurant is right by the funicular, just off the main boulevard and easy walking distance from the subway. There are three storeys, all filled with customers and bustling with waitstaff. We came as a big group, and our waiter did a superb job keeping the wine flowing, the food coming, and keeping the orders straight. We don't always touch the little appetizers restaurants in Portugal bring to the table without asking, but at this place, the cheese, bread and ham are so delicious we clean the plates. The menu is quite extensive, with focus on seafood, and a wide variety of it, it's hard to just pick one dish. We have the black rice with seafood, octopus, and other items, and enjoy all of them. The octopus is amazingly tender, the shrimps juicy, the meat succulent. The preparation is rather straight forward, nothing fusiony, just honest, delicious and fresh food. The wine list comes on an ipad, so you get a lot of info about the wine (though some info is in Portuguese which doesn't help me). I heard this place was not only a celebrity hot spot (fun!) but that it's got really good seafood. So I had high expectations for this place going in, and was really disappointed. I never give reviews, but felt obligated to warn the patrons who aren't rolling in it - be advised!! 1) Upon arrival, the servers were all very friendly and attentive - we had several servers coming to our table. This seemed helpful at first, but then later on we'd ask one server for something, they'd forget our request, and whoever we reminded would then blame the forgotten request on the other server. Most annoying: they forgot to give us the take-away we asked for (a half-finished 25 euro dish!) and instead they tossed it. Another time I asked for a wine refill, and the server refilled the wine glasses at the table next to us instead. Kinda funny mistake, but gimme my wine. 2) when ordering, I asked about their prawns in garlic dish, thinking it would be a nice and simple Portuguese dish. The server gave me a weird look, and when I asked if he thought it'd be enough food, he said yes. It turned out not to be enough (about 8 small shrimp) and was over cooked and boring. 15 euros later. 3) the phone would not stop ringing! A hectic restaurant is great. A restaurant that's got a phone ringing off the hook on full volume(that reminds me of the office I'm on vacation from) not so great. Silent mode? Volume decrease? Hello? 4) The servers were nice, but lost all charm when they realized we weren't big spenders. We spent 75 euros on food and drinks (this was our agreed-upon big spending night in Lisbon), and I got the feeling that the amount we spent wasn't enough. 5) they serve you immediately with a meat/cheese dish, bread, butter, and olives - all of which they charge you for. We accepted the offerings, not knowing they'd charge and thinking they were complimentary. Altogether, these were roughly an extra 16 euros on the bill. A nice seafood restaurant. The restaurant is a little touristy, but the food is really good. Our hotel concierge recommend the place and we were glad we went. It was a little intimidating early on. They pushed a couple of apps on you when you walk in the door, but if you just tell them no thank you, they have no issue pulling them back. Food and value wise, this is probably four stars. It is very good, but the prices are so high that they don't really feel justified. I am docking more stars though because they seem to take advantage of foreigners. We tried to order a single serving slice of fish once by pointing at that line on the menu and the waiter brought a whole, big fish past us and shook it at us on the way to the kitchen just long enough that he could have said he had showed it to us to get our approval for the weight, but we noticed what he was doing and reminded him that we only wanted the single serving. The said "but it's small!" We had already shared two other dishes. This would have probably added another 80-100 Euros to our bill if we had not noticed what he was trying to do. The bill was already 155 Euros for 3 people and we did not overeat. The other waiters we have had have been better but this kind of thing should not be allowed. In a single word - Disappointing! Have you ever felt used, as though you were only being "processed" until presented a check? In forty years of world travel on nearly every continent with dining experiences from Michelin to Mac-D this was unique. Having made reservations several months in advance we looked forward to visiting this long running often lauded establishment. It was a gorgeous summer evening; the bustling dinner crowd in Lisbon was just emerging as we walked from our apartment to the quaint little door of SOLAR DOS PRESUNTOS that seemed to exuded a since of charm and warmth. Whatever romanticized delusion we were in vanished the moment we crossed the threshold. As we were crammed into a space about the size of three phone booths, if you recall those pre-cell boxes for communication, with another couple facing a girl staring at a reservation terminal and a man more guard then maître d. Receiving no greeting or pleasantry from either we offered our name and reservation time. Quickly confirming both she told her coworker we had until 9:00, a two-hour window, granting him permission to open the glass partition separating us from a dining room where only several of maybe a dozen tables were occupied. Like Star trek compartment accesses, the glass slid away, the man motioning for us to follow a woman on the other side. The efficiency of the door was as acute as the lack hospitality. We were led up a staircase, through another small dining area to a claustrophobic, low ceilinged cubical sort of room with walls entirely covered in collages of various uninteresting pictures in a far corner with about eight tables where two were occupied and two were set with starters already laid out, then let loose. We selected the table not directly adjacent to a party of six, partially through their meal, seating ourselves. The lapse was brief before our waiter, ether having used medication that produced, or needing some to lessen his anxiety arrived placing a small, mounted placard about the size of an egg bearing a QR code on our table then turned away saying nothing. Ok, we get the Covid protocol, however, those restrictions have rapidly diminished and are now largely only observed in with public transportation. We appreciate concerns for our safety. In selecting between the Big MAC or the Quarter Pounder observing the menu on a cell phone doesn't exactly delude the dining experience. When the menu, conversely, has multiple courses with divisional selections, appetizers, wine, cocktail, and dessert list its cumbersome to be making choices unable to view a grander version appropriate to the experience. This becoming one of those petty first-world annoyances we must tell ourselves how fortunate we are to endure. When he returned, we inquired if we could have printed menus. Clearly impatient, our waiter quickly reappeared stating they had menus but none in English. Apparently, as frustrated as us, he offered no comment or apology, aware forty years was probably sufficient if management cared to accommodate the clientele. Perhaps not cocaine inspired behavior, nonetheless, our comic noir waiter was back at us three times within minutes asking for our order and appealing for us to decide. Drink selections were no less odd. My companion asked for an Apperol Spritz and I said I didn't wish a cocktail but was deciding my entrée before ordering wine. The waiter seemed genuinely baffled claiming to have never heard of Apperol. We assured him the bartender would be familiar. The bright orangish red aperitif has been commonly noted on tables across the Mediterranean for nearly 100 years. Twice more requested to order within moments, we got the distinct impression we were unwitting contestants in some game concocted by staff of who could turn the table faster. Questions concerning menu items further identified our issue. The waiter unable to quickly manipulate the multiple drop-down lists had to fumble between things, like us, trying to view the various offerings and help us in the selection of a wine using our phone. His ire and personal frustration surfacing with a look and tone of comical self-deprecating disgust at his own embarrassment at being put in this position by a management that didn't care. My dinner companion decided on the pork, I the sea bass, leaving my wine selection to the waiter as he couldn't find or show me on the menu what was available by the glass so I could choose. The Apperol Spritz was still nowhere to be seen. Evident, however, were the cute wooden box with wonderful breads, the bowl of olives, the cheese and tray of meats. This was my friends first visit to Portugal. He didn't realize its customary here to place these on the table and only charge for them if someone is tempted to touch one of the delights.
