I wasn't sure after reading the other reviews, I feared it might be all gimmick and no depth. But it is very good! The bar stock is deep, the staff knowledgeable and friendly, and food was very good. The speakeasy conceit is well played, sincere but not obsessive and, well, fun. The decor and staff "costumes" are consistent without being in your face. After telephoning in, we were seated at the bar. The bartender, 20s code name Hawthorn, delivered a great house drink, A Drink with No Name (main flavors, peat and ginger) as my first toe in the water. I followed that with a classic, The Last Word, which she prepared perfectly. Her sidekick then delivered on a vague flavor request, whiskey with bitter amaro. A very fine set. My companion enjoyed a Sazerac (perfect), Remember the Maine (Manhattan Variation with cherry liqueur; their interpretation was a bit quirky but good), and a straight ahead Manhattan. Food was mushroom and sausage risotto (me, very good) and meatloaf with bashed taters (companion, excellent). They were short staffed the night we were there but worked hard to serve as quickly as they could. Maybe not a place to bring Nanna or Uncle Barney. Found Sole's by accident when I stopped to take a picture of a sign I thought was odd. A woman said, "That's a great bar!" Who knew! Sole's is a speakeasy, but don't tell the feds! It has a delightful staff, tasty food (I had the deviled eggs and meatloaf), delicious drinks, enjoyable and friendly patrons, and a period-themed interior. This place rocks! read more

I walked up to this place aaaaand was confused. The signs outside said they were closed due to prohibition, yet I could hear jazz music outside from the speakers. Turns out, it was a front for a FANTASTIC speakeasy named Sole's! We had no idea how to get in until a nice passerby told us the "secret code" we had to say into the phone next to the door. Once we did that, we were in, and the food was great! I'd show pics, but (a) I didn't take any inside because (b) you need to see it for yourself when you're in town. We had such a great time here. The cocktails are great curated, very different ones and most of them are very special. Not the usual ones at all. The barkeepers were super nice and consulted us with the right choice. Also, they are super professional and inspiring in their mixology. The place is so cosy. Perfectly dim-lit. What an experience! Pick up the phone and start having a great evening. The cocktails are creative and delicious, we recommend the spicy pork belly with kimchi app (but I'm sure they're all great), and the dinners may seem simple but they're very, very well done. Service is excellent, and the interior cool and cozy. We had beers at Branch & Blade before arriving here for dinner, which may have helped us relax and enjoy the experience, but damn! My wife and I went to Keene State way back in the early 90s and lived across the street from this location for two years. When we were visiting last week on a nostalgia trip we saw what appeared to be a closed bar/restaurant on Winter St. Later that night we met up with an old college friend who said she had just the place to take us. We questioned her judgement when she headed towards the place we thought was closed. When she picked up an old phone next to the door and ordered three pairs of shoes we almost took off running. But we're glad we stayed because this old fashioned speakeasy was the perfect spot to sit on a damp dreary night and catch up with an old friend over a drink. I love history and although we had graduated and moved before the 'Parrish shoe company' took over the town, we were very familiar with the back story so the theme and decor was not lost on us. I was afraid to post this for fear that the Feds would hear about it, but life is about taking risks. Go, but be quiet about it just in case... read more

Ok, been to Keene many times and never heard of Sole's. Have a lake house nearby and we've been to Keene many times to eat. Love Luca's, Jamaican grille, Stage (good food but sooo slow service), Athens pizza, the list goes on but never heard of this place. Had to stay at the hotel Fairview when we had issues with our septic and the woman at the hotel desk told of us this place. Were going to go to Fireworks since we hadn't been there before and it's connected to the hotel but they were closed due to a private party; so, walking through the frigid sub zero weather to Sole's. We were told it was hard to find. Looks boarded up and closed and no signs really marking the place so we almost walked by it. My husband tried both covered doors but they were locked. I noticed an old style phone on the wall between the doors; so he picked it up and when they answered he asked "Are you open?" I'm sure we didn't come across as the most intuitive, lol but she asked how many people. Next time hopefully we can be a little more imaginative...cocktails are very good and the food was too. Looking forward to going back and very excited about a different kind of place when going to Keene. Was perfect that we were able to walk to our place rather than having to drive; otherwise, we wouldn't have been able to try different cocktails. read more

after waiting to get in we were greeted by a rude hostess who clearly told us how we did the whole phone thing was wrong - were were sat and then the waitress in the red long sleeve shirt with a black skirt asked us what we wanted to drink and the after delivering it to us she never once came back and she proceeded to help everyone but us - we had one friend that may of had too much to drink and after telling us the rules we abided, but he wait staff never came back to see how we were doing... NEVER WILL COME BACK! I have been waiting to go to this place for so long and after our experience it was not worth the initial visit. read more
