We had such a great time for the Nordic Nights Event here! Every Saturday for the winter months, Solitude hosts this fun event where you can blaze the snow-filled trails with snowshoes and cute tea lights guiding the way. They have unlimited hot chocolate served by their trusty bartender (aka the hot chocolate machine) and it's always refilled the staff. They also had s'mores that you could eat to your heart's content. Dress warm! This event is at night and can get chilly. The staff here are fantastic and super nice. When my friend invited me to go snowshoeing in the mountains, I'll admit that I was a little hesitant. I'm not the most winter-adventurous person, but I went along. Now, I can full-heartedly say that I'm converted-and I can't wait to go back again! Parking right outside the center gets full quickly, but there's overflow parking not too far away. The staff is absolutely wonderful-so friendly and willing to help. Shout out to Todd who cheerfully helped me get my snowshoes on and off-he knows his stuff. You can rent equipment or just get your day pass and use your own. I felt incredibly at ease and welcome-even as an obvious newbie to the game. I think next time I'll try the cross country skiing just to mix things up a bit. Or maybe even take some lessons and attempt to ski down a hill or two. Maybe. read more

Taking some lesson for nordic or cross country ski was in my wish list for a long time. As a matter of fact, the son of my boyfriend gave us a gift certificate for another center, last Christmas, and we had not have the opportunity to use it until later during this holidays. So when I arrived in Salk Lake City and my bf picked up me at the airport, he had kept the surprise of taking me to Solitude so I could learn a bit the tricks of this sport or exercise (depends on how you use it) and for him was mostly a refresher, since he grew up in showy Utah. In the spirit of 'more experiences, less things' type of Christmas gifts, we enjoyed the hour of training with excellent coach and assistant. They were both super patient with slow sloppy me and I learned a lot (even if I could not still stand up by myself when falling...I guess I need more lessons). I found this activity very neat for a couple, perfect gift, not expensive and after the class you can stay there in the tracks all day if you want. After a couple of hours we were done (this was a heavy workout for us). We brought our own equipment, so it was nice to be able to finally enjoy those items that were collecting dust in the storage too! I loved Solitude, very peaceful and the more seasoned skiers were not many and they were very understanding of us beginners. read more

We came here on a beautiful Friday morning and were helped out right away. It was my first time cross country skiing and the staff was very helpful in getting me my rental gear and sharing some tips. Sometimes I don't fully acknowledge how awesome Utah is. I mean, I try my hardest to give it cred, but this place just blows me away. Every season is incredible. The variety of landscape is mind-boggling. And I take for granted a lot of amazing things at my fingertips that just seem second nature. Solitude's Nordic center is definitely one of those things. How cool is this place! I mean, this is a spot I frequent in all seasons except (normally) winter. The lake, the boardwalk, the scenery--it's all quite remarkable in spring, summer, and definitely fall... but it's a NORDIC CENTER for crying out loud, in the middle of a SKI RESORT. So winter is when it really reaches full potential. This is the perfect spot to go if you'd like to try cross country skiing or snowshoeing. Everything you need is right at your fingertips, from over 12 miles of trails, to equipment rentals, and even personalized or group classes. It all starts here at the Nordic Center, which has its own parking lot (which fills up fast), or you can take the shuttle from the village down in Solitude. From there, you can bring your own gear and just pay for the pass ($20 for a full day, $16 if you arrive after 12:30pm, $10 for Seniors, and kids 6 and under are free). If you need rentals, they have both classic and skate XC skis and they run $20 for the former, $22 for the latter, with discounts for the half day. There are lots of other passes, multi-day passes, equipment and gear rentals (poles, boots, etc) so you should check the website for current pricing. Snowshoes are $16. All of the prices add up if you're a family, but it's still a great way to get out into the forest and see what it's all about. The Forest Service has a presence here and they're super friendly in the interactions I've had with them. This is a great option for folks who come to town and may not want to downhill ski or snowboard, but want to get out into Utah mountains in winter. read more

I happened upon the Nordic Center after learning that you cannot hike Silver Lake this time of year without snowshoes. I was super fortunate to have a great staff to help me, despite not having all of the right gear. Snowshoe rentals were super affordable, and the staff made sure I was set up just right. I also want to share that Eric went absolutely above and beyond to make my visit amazing! I had an issue with my car keys, and Eric ensured that I was safe and taken care of the whole time! read more

We maybe went on a bad day. The Xcountry ski tracks had issues--mushy, big areas "missing" from people who fell in them-- making it VERY hard to get though any turn or hill without falling in the same place. I am not an expert XC skier, but have done it several dozen times and fell more here than any other place. For whatever reason-- equipment, poor and mushy tracks, or maybe just too many beers the night before, no one in our group of 4 felt this was easy XC skiing or worth the cost (almost $140 for the 4 of us). It is a very pretty property, and it does seem they try to maintain. Next time we would try snowshoeing instead, after reading the other reviews. Overall, this was our least favorite activity in the Solitude area over our 7 day stay. read more

Loved my day at the Nordic Center. After a long, slow, snowy climb up the mountain, I arrived at the Center. Very simple place where you can rent xx skis or snow shoes. I am a snow shoer. They were very emphatic with me that I not stray off the Show shoe courses as the XX trails were well groomed and not to be destroyed by a wayward snow shoer. Ok. I get it. The show shoe trails were very well marked. I shoed 4 of the trails. My only complaint is that the trails were fairly short. But you can weave together a pretty good work out. Trails took me through wooded lands, around a lake, through cabins deeply buried in snow. Lots of snow! Best $5 I've spent in a long while (I did not have to pay a rental fee for equip.) read more

We loved this place. It's beautiful. We snowshoed and cross country skied and enjoyed it. They had bathrooms and water fountains available. We were also able to rent a chariot sled to pull our toddler behind us. We will be back! read more

We are beginner cross-county skiers and this was a great place to get a lesson and practice. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. We forgot sunglasses (a must on a sunny day!) and they lent us some to use for the day. Snow tracks are well maintained and the views are nice. read more

I have been doing XC skiing in the Salt Lake area for several years now, mostly in millcreek Canyon and at Mountain Dell. A couple of years ago, I 'splurged' and went to Soldier Hollow where I had one of the best experiences skiing since I took up the sport. Today, I was unable to talk my brother into taking another trip 'all the way' to Midway nor could I talk him into trying White Pine touring center in Park City. When I suggested Solitude's Nordic Center, he enthusiastically agreed to go. Now any time I am asked to pay a fee greater than a nominal 'day use' fee, I expect a lot. This place did not deliver it. My only real issue (and this was a BIG one) is that the terrain is so ill-suited to the sport. it was mostly just flat and there were very few hills where one could get a good ride. They only had green and blue runs- no black- and after you enjoy the ride down the most exciting trail, "Cornucopia" you are faced with either taking the shuttle back to the top (and I believe that this only makes the trip 3 times in one day so depending on your timing, you could be waiting an AWFULLY long time!) or a strenuous and dull climb back up the hill to do it again. The trails were well groomed, I liked that they had permanent signs with a map of the trails posted from time to time, but it was just a very boring place to ski. The best bargain skiing is at Mountain Dell which has a $5 day use fee and for just a dollar more than the Nordic Center (and a LONGER drive) a lot of excitement awaits you at Soldier Hollow. read more

For Fla folks snow shoing is frightening but the folks here. Are consummate pros. They fit us with gear and confidence at the right price. The establishment is run by s former Olympian. It is like being taught to paint by Michelangelo. The trails are well marked and well maintained.Cross country equipment is available but we Fla folks aren't that brave just yet. read more
