I came on here to see if there were other reviews left about the owner and sure enough, there are. It was my first time at this location and as I was waiting for my food, I suddenly hear extremely unpleasant yelling and complaining in the back. I was so confused and thought someone let a complaining customer in the back of the store. To my surprise though it seemed that it was the owner. I don't know if she's having a bad day but the way she was yelling at her staff in front of dining patrons she was completely unprofessional. I normally don't write reviews but I felt so bad for the staff as I haven't witnessed something like this before that I hope she sees all the other reviews here to make a change. Even from the patio I could hear her complaining inside. Made dining extremely awkward and that I had to leave early. It also seems to be a topic amongst dining patrons (just overheard the next table beside me say that it seems like the place is falling apart in there). Once again, I don't know the full story maybe management is going through something, but I'm quite sure the scared looking employees haven't done anything that drastic to deserve to be berated on a constant basis. Sollys is the only authentic Jewish bagel place in town. If you've ever had a Jewish bagel you'll know that they aren't like any other kind! I think today was my last visit to Sollys. It's too bad as I do love their bagels. It's the service. It is usually slow but forgiven as again the food is good. The time before this they had this horrible sign up explaining why it was slow. It said, in part, that it wasn't their fault that people didn't put enough time in the meter or that people had "hurried lives". Came very close to leaving then, but didn't. I can understand it's busy and short staffed, but what I don't is not getting a greeting and saying they'll be with you soon. A friendly face at the least. Solly's came recommended to me by a a local, saying Jewish bagels were there best around (maybe because this is the only Jewish bagelry around?). I really didn't think they're be any different than regular bagels, but how wrong was I. From the outside, yes, these are just bagels. But the texture and taste is slightly different, and really felt like what bagels were supposed to be all this time. The helping of cream cheese is quite generous, calling it a "bagel shmear." You really can't go wrong here, a very authentic and enjoyable Jewish bagelry experience. Will definitely stop by for a quick bite when I'm in the area again. read more

This review is a big ditto of what's been said in prior reviews. The bagels are delicious but the service is a huge turn off. I'm not surprised they are short staffed as the owner's attitude to her staff is equivalent to a dark cloud. This is then reflected in the staff's attitude towards customers. The line up queue is also horribly designed, especially for first time visitors. Many a times I've seen customers confused at the system and then get berated by the owner about whether or not they've paid of their food... I came here to compare their New Yorker (corned beef on rye with coleslaw, pickles and ripple chips) to another bagel shop that does a Montreal smoked meat on a bagel with French fries and a pop. Paid $20 at Sollys with a bottle of water, the pickle was the best part, the corned beef was okay not hot all the way through, the coleslaw I had one bite and the chips were also untouched. I just can't find anywhere that beats their bagel competitor who has the similar but better lunch special that includes a drink for $15. I promised myself I would give them 3 strikes before posting a review, but I did, and every single time I was disappointed immensely by the service I received. 1st time: They took 26 minutes to make me ONE lox bagel, and then when I said what the hell, they responded saying "well you got your food didn't you?!". This was a sit down order I did so I wasn't the most pissed off because I was distracted mostly by what was going on on my phone so I wasn't affected by the time going by, just noticed that it had. 2nd time: They literally argued with me when I asked for ketchup. KETCHUP. And the serving of ketchup they gave me was comically small, probably half of what would come in a packet from a fast food restaurant. Just enough ketchup to get a little tingle of it on your tongue and that was it, so I had to repeat the similar confrontation multiple times to get them to give me 3-4 tubs.. and god, the utter disrespect I received for asking for ketchup.. I felt like it was taboo or something like that. 3rd time (this morning): I walked in at 8:10 thinking I would be able to get 2 bagels for work that started at 8:30, this gave me more than enough time... or so I thought. Some frantic older lady employee was literally screaming at everyone behind the counter. I was pretty quickly greeted by someone and they took my order. 2 toasted bagels with cream cheese. I stood there and waited, and waited, and waited, and this woman behind the counter where they prep the food just let my order exist in her queue, not getting to it or even really considering anything other than her shitty attitude her ear piercing loud voice and whatever she was going on about in an aggressive completely unprofessional manner to her peers behind the counter. Long story short its 8:29 and I'm only getting my bagels, she wasted 18 minutes, and made my bagels in the last minute of that time. I had debated just leaving around 8:25 and salvaging the morning and not being late to work, but alas, I prioritized my breakfast. Thanks for making me late to work because of your F grade service, Solly's. Long story short : The food, it's pretty damn good, but the service, is utter dogshit. They claim to have the best bagels in town, although they were good, I still would rather drive to Mt Royal for my bagel fix. They come with an incredible amount of cream cheese though, I don't know how they manage to pack the hole so full of cheese it is actually raised... But they do, cream cheese witchcraft. The iced drinks come with umbrellas, which was a hit with the kids and they bring the food to your table, which is a nice touch. The have a little toy box too, so this is a decent place to stop and sit with the wee ones and stay a while. read more

I love the diner, bakery, deli type atmosphere. After you make your order they give you a number on a metal stilt you put out, and they bring you your food. The drinks in the fridge I find over priced, but they get you on many things here. I find that you are stuck in the line up to the till a little too long, so I try to avoid this place during prime time hours. I was so excited to try this place, being from the east coast but having lived in Seattle for the past 22 years and missing my Jewish delis SO SO MUCH! I just moved to Vancouver and saw Solly's sign during my many visits to Canadian Tire (it's on the next block), and I made a mental note to visit here soon! So my elderly parents from Montreal were visiting us and I thought it would be a great idea to bring them to Solly's for breakfast on the first day of their visit. They love delis, too and they live on Montreal bagels with lox and cream cheese. My dad just wanted some plain eggs. They were excited to get some familiar food, and they kvelled over the menu and the Jewish foods in the display case (the rugelah, the knishes, the latkes, oh my!). The set-up inside, for a newbie, is rather confusing: you line up from the right side and place your order, then go to the left and pay, then sit down and wait for them to call you to get your food. The woman with whom we placed our order was somewhat aloof: my dad had questions about the eggs and what the dish comes with and the woman was curt with him (he's nearly 90, for goodness sake. A little patience would go a long way!). At the cash, the guy wouldn't take my dad's $100 bill (there's a posted note that they don't accept them). No biggie, but a little issues. (Note: the new Canadian $100 bank bills are notoriously difficult to counterfeit). when our meals came out, one wasn't what we ordered (lox with cream cheese on a sesame bagel). We got a different meal instead. I went to discuss this with the woman who took our orders and she became very defensive, saying this is exactly what we ordered. Well, if we did, we didn't mean to and, honestly, any reputable establishment would simply have offered the customer what they wanted (in this case, just a bagel with lox and cream cheese. Instead we got a bagel with scrambled eggs and cheese. The woman argued that the "lox was inside". I can assure you, there was no lox at all inside this egg-cheese meal). But no, it was like talking to a stone wall. We were stuck with this meal we didn't order and ended up just picking at it and leaving most on the plate. The food itself was good here. Not great, compared to east coast delis, but good. But the customer service was atrocious. In the future, if I return here, it would simply be to take our food. Never to dine inside the restaurant. i have had Solly's infamous cinnamon buns many times... but this would my first time sitting in with Solly. What a quaint little homey feeling establishment. I was very overwhelmed with all the delicous baked goods proudly showing off their sticky sugary gleam in the limelights.... i felt i needed something a little on the healthy side for dinner. so i ordered a small taboulleh salad with a side of cinnamon bun. Decided to pay a visit to Solly's "Authentic Jewish Eatery" in Mount Pleasant. It was a nice little place on the border between West and East-end Vancouver, although the staff there were mostly Asian and has no idea about Jewish culture. I asked if they close early for Shabbat, or when Hanukkah falls this year and they had no clue what I was talking about. The person who took my order was VERY friendly, but the woman behind the cash was rude, taking a phone call in the middle of our transaction, and she didn't seem to speak much English. Ordered a simple bagel and lox, and got a bagel, lox, capers, a lemon wedge and a small bag of chips. Everything seemed quite pleasant, but definitely more "Jewish-style" rather than Jewish. Also, the bagels are western-style, not Montreal/New York-style, and this REALLY disappointed me. Took home some matzo ball soup to my daughter, and she loved it. Plus, it lacked the ambiance of Jewish businesses I've become used to from my childhood in Montreal. Other than that, it was as close to authentic Jewish atmosphere as I've seen in Vancouver. I'll start off by saying I've had positive experiences with the food, any stars this review gets are due to that and the few select staff that have stuck around over the years. By far my biggest problem with this Solly's location is the owner, she is the most unpleasant human and unprofessional business owner I have ever encountered. I've been going to Solly's on and off for about 6 years due to its proximity to my work, and year after year, I've seen her belittle employees publicly, shout their faults across the room at them, publicly tell them where they went wrong, in front of massive lineups. I've found myself on multiple occasions talking to employees and apologizing for what just happened to them, I see the stress and unhappiness when she's in the room, and it's more than just working with your boss stress. I've seen her push staff out of the way telling them she'll just do things cause she can do them faster, and proceed to hold up the line because of how long she personally takes, literally week to week you don't see the same staff there, people get hired and quit immediately. Thank you to Theresa who works at the bagel counter, she is the saving grace of that place, and a few other select staff who work there that keep it together. read more

Been meaning to try this for ages! The smell was lovely, yum. Was just gone lunchtime on a Saturday afternoon,so pretty busy, but we were able to find some seats by the window. It was a little confusing where to order from; both the staff and people queuing up all seemed a little flustered, not quite sure why (hunger does strange things!). MUST READ: Before I get into my review of the food, I had read other reviews on here while waiting in line. There were a lot of complaints about customer service and employees being unfriendly. I must say, the entire time I was there I watched a lady (older (50's), short curly hair, and brown glasses) berate the employees at every turn. Her tone of voice was extremely condescending and loud enough I could hear everything she was harassing them about. The employees had mediocre customer service but I can't blame them if these are the conditions they have to work under. I would have given 3 stars if it weren't for this older lady treating her employees poorly. My husband and I purchased a sun-dried tomato bagel with schmear. The bagels are a little smaller than what we were used to and the price was mediocre. The bagel tasted good, toasted on the outside and chewy on the inside. Schmear was also good. Nothing to really write home about. We did not get the chance to try anything else but the cinnamon rolls did look quite appetizing. The menu had a decent amount of options. I really want to leave a good review...but I can't. The food is yummy, but the service is just so bad. There's a huge handwritten sign where you go to make your order that says something along the lines of "don't make any substitutions and know your order before getting to the front of the line". I should have taken a picture of the sign-- fellow Yelpers, does anyone have a pic? Anyways, the problem is that you can't really make up your mind about the type of bagel you get until you are at the front of the line, because that's where they keep the display of types of bagels! So today I was afraid to make any changes to my order. I wanted the veggie sandwich with no tomato but I was too intimidated to ask for no tomato. Normally I'm not so soft, but the staff were all brisk and they seemed really grumpy. Anyways, I'm waiting 15 minutes after placing the order to pay. There was one person on cash, but she also had to get coffees and bakery items. She got someone's coffee order wrong so had to pour it again. And then someone all the staff knew came in, so they all stopped what they were doing to talk to her. The customer with the wrong coffee order actually had to interrupt them to ask if she could have her coffee -- by the way it isn't from a latte machine or anything, it's just regular drip coffee out of a thermos so it isn't like it has to be "made". At the end of the day, there were 5 staff behind the counter but only one person doing the cashier/bakery job, so the line grew and grew and people's food just sat there already made but unpaid for. I just can't justify coming back if I'm taking my lunch break from work to do it. I have other things to do with my time! I really wanted to like Solly's. So much so that I've given them multiple chances over the last five years to...well, to not repel me! I'm done leaving full but peeved and thinking "Well, maybe next time it'll go better". It won't; there won't be any more next times. I'm done with these clowns. The food and prices are fine. Not awesome, not awful, just fine. But the service is consistently indifferent, slack, sloppy, and poor. It feels deliberately passive-aggressive. Today's final-straw visit went like this: I came in around 2:30 pm and ordered right off the menu board. Picked two fizzy drinks out of the cooler, paid, was about to choose a table when the woman who'd taken my order several minutes before said "Hey, we're out of challah." Ummm...seriously? I get that sometimes there's unexpected demand or short supply, but a Jewish deli running out of the quintessential Jewish bread? Dammit, manage your quantities better. I specify a different kind of bread. OK, now let's pick a place to eat: as soon as I stepped away from the counter and towards the eating area, a heavy unclean smell hit me. It was a mouldy, fungal smell. Maybe it's been too long since their ventilation system was cleaned and serviced, or maybe something was growing somewhere that never gets mopped; I don't know, but if I hadn't already ordered and paid, I would've left. I found a seat at the periphery where the smell wasn't so strong. By and by my sandwich and soup were brought to the table, minus the cheese that was supposed to be in the sandwich. I went back to the counter and asked after it; the lady said "I'll bring it" and a minute or two later brought me a slice of cheese. I disassembled my sandwich, installed the cheese, and reassembled the sandwich. No big deal by itself, mistakes happen. When I opened my fizzy drink, it foamed up out of the bottle and got all over the table, my shirt, and my jeans. Whoops! I jumped up, went to the cash register (no customers) and --  with my dripping hands held outstretched -- pointed at the roll of paper towel behind the cashier and asked if I could have some rags or paper towels. Right at that moment, a woman I would later learn is the owner/manager/big cheese stepped up to the cashier and they started having a chat about money, swapping bills in and out of the till. For some strange reason, owner-woman wants particular denominations (this is obvs not about making sure the register is appropriately stocked for customer transactions): "Eeeyeahhhhh...I think I'd rather not have a fifty...maybeeeeeee...I donno, two twenties and a ten? Or two twenties and two fives...?" I'm standing there, dripping, as soda pop is spreading on the table and soaking into my clothes. I'm still pointing at the paper towel. The cashier gives me the "1 sec" hand sign and keeps on chit-chatting about twenties and fifties. I repeat myself: excuse me, could I _please_ have some rags or paper towel? Again I get the "1 sec" hand sign. By and by, the owner says "What do you need it for, is it to wipe your table? Or is it a spill?" I say "It's a spill, and it's spreading, and the longer we stand here talking about it, the more of it is soaking into my clothes, so for the third time, may I *PLEASE* have some rags or paper towel *NOW*?". Cashier unwinds a couple of paper towel squares and hands them to me. My, that was difficult. It's not enough, but I manage to sop up some of the spill. I finish my lunch and go back to the counter, intending to tell the owner why I won't be returning--I think it's only fair that if I've decided to stop patronising a business, the owner ought to know why. I quietly ask the cashier if I could please talk with the owner. Cashier goes into the back, comes back and says "She's busy, she'll be out in a sec." Sixty secs pass by, then a hundred and twenty, then two hundred and forty--I'm watching them on the big clock on the wall. Cashier circles back to me and says "Hi". I say "Hi. This is not improving with age; may I please speak to her?" Cashier says "She's still in back...um...is there...what's...can I help you?". I say "I'm an upset customer and this is not getting better." Cashier says "One sec" and goes in the back, then comes back and says "She'll be out in a sec." A hundred and eighty additional secs later, the owner is still showing every sign of deliberately avoiding me--very classy. My time is not free. I tell the cashier "OK, then. Please let her know I'll just take it to Yelp." And here I am. Looks like I'm not alone, too. read more

My daughter and I are always on the hunt for a good bagel place when we are traveling, and this was our second spot when we were in Vancouver. The first place was classic 'all hat and no cattle'. It had all the looks of a great bagel spot, down to the wood fired oven, but sadly the bagels were just slightly better than you would get from Sarah Lee. We read the reviews about this place and were tempted to try another location, but my daughter insisted that we should witness the salty older boss lady in person. Instead, we got legitimately amazing New York style bagels, great service and more. Not only were the bagels and coffee great, but the service was acceptably fast, and we even got some chocolate bobka rolls that really hit the spot. We came back the next day, and I even had a nice conversation with the aforementioned salty boss lady, who I found her to be pleasant, knowledgable about all things bagel, and not without some great charm.
