Simple, laid back bakery. Came here on a Sunday morning and it was surprisingly full...likely, with regulars because they seemed to be familiar with the owners. You get to pour your own cup o' joe and they'll bring breakfast to your table. So nice and quaint. Perfect if you want no frills. The bakery items look really good too! I've been here in the afternoons where the selection isn't as good because most of the goodies are sold out. When we visited in the morning, the array of pastries and breads looked delightfully tempting...didn't get to buy any though because breakfast filled us up! Love love love this hometown bakery :)

As long as you don't expect "gluten-free this" or "artisan that", then you'll like what Steveston Bakery has to offer. This place is totally unpretentious and old-school. They bake their goods fresh daily, and since it's a small operation, they carry a somewhat limited inventory of pastries. That said, we like their muffins and turnovers. I don't know if they use lard, shortening or what when they make their pies and turnovers, but whatever they use tastes terrific, I can't tell you if they serve good coffee because I usually go to the Starbucks or Waves across the street. But, this place does fairly brisk business, so customers seem to like their beverages as well.

I love bakeries, I really do. There's something about the sweet smell in the air the minute you walk in, and the beautiful assortment of pastries lined up on display ready for you to eat, that just has me salivating almost every single time I step into a bakery. This spot is no different. My brother and I had just finished our lunch, and we needed a small sweet treat to balance our all the savoury we just put in our bellies. The Steveston Bakery was right across the street, so we just popped in real quickly. Alas, the minute we walked in that sweet smell washed over us, and I was excited to take a look at what different pastries they had to offer. Croissants, muffins, cheesecakes... I did not know how I was going to pick just one. I settled on a chocolate croissant (although the almond croissant looked equally tempting) and my brother got a mini carrot cake - cream cheese frosting and all. My croissant, while yummy and chocolatey, was nothing in comparison to that carrot cake. WOW. It was perfect and so, so, so moist (and I hate using that word). It was so rich, that after 2 bites I was more than satisfied. The lady helping us at the register was a sweet older woman - I wasn't able to catch her name, but she was so helpful and very, very kind. I also saw that they serve an assortment of brunch items - breakfast bagels, breakfast burritos, and eggs benny... so I'd love to come back to check this out - especially since they bake all their bread in house! Honestly, I'd come back to this bakery just to get a large carrot cake for myself. No shame.

    Turkey bagel sandwich $6.95

I have to admit that I felt pretty skeptical walking in to grab lunch on the go. The place was jam packed and the staff were all in a frenzy (they were friendly though). The menu was easy enough to navigate but there's a separate board near the back letting you know what type of sandwich you can get. I opted for the turkey bagel sandwich on the last bagel (white) they had left and refused to have cheese added for an additional dollar (the sign for that was on another board). I got back to work and I was blown away by how good my bagel sandwich was. There was a good variety of veggies (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, green bell pepper and red onions) and a nice big stack of turkey meat. The only other thing inside was some mayo. The entire thing was panini pressed and it smelled incredible and the lines were delicious! I paid $6.95 and for a hearty sandwich in a tourist area, I think that's more than reasonable. There were a lot of customers ordering sweeter desserts but they didn't look all that appetizing. Maybe I'll swing by for a dessert next time and give it a go.

How can you not make an eclair, with real cream inside? Seems most bakeries these days content with just smearing chocolate on top lol. and their cinnamon buns are just ok. But it's good to have a fresh bakery in Steveston. Good spot to chit chat and coffee, without spending too much. Parallel parking on No.1 road.

Wifey got the sweet and salty which was French toast with soft poached egg/hollandaise. The waffle I ordered also came with a soft poached egg/hollandaise. For beverages I got a regular coffee and wifey got a lavender latte. The plating was absolutely beautiful for the dishes. My first bite of the waffles and chicken was delightful. The chicken was moist and seasoned well and the waffle was nice and soft. There also was a salad on top which was dressed in a sweet dressing. That was standard as greens go. The clam chowder had a decent amount of large clams in it, the texture and creaminess was good. I did feel the base or soup stock used was a tad light for my liking as I wasn't catching the essence of clam chowder flavor. Other wise it was ok. But filling it you intend to eat the whole bun which I did cuz I love sourdough bread. Wife's french toast was lovely, I had a small taste and to me it was good. Nothing mind blowing but decently good. The hollandaise used to be tasted buttery and legit. The meal on a whole was very good and we love the patio seating. Would definitely come back again.

Maybe a bit light on the meat, as it was buried by the arugula and pickled shallots, so seemed unbalanced, but overall tasted great - Seafood Linguini: Mixed. Linguini was good. Scallops were really good and tender. Mussels were tiny. Red snapper was tough and dry. As a dish, it was OK, but could be better. Seafood is seasonal, so I'd think they would be better off rotating what seafood is used. - LuLu Island: OK. Same issue as the linguine. Prawns were fine. Mussels tiny. Red snapper wasn't enjoyable. The rooms are clean, spacious and come with room-darkening shades- yay! The bed was soo comfy, and the bathroom was spotless. The area was just lovely; lots of small eateries and coffee shops, lots of variety and a proper grocery store across the street. The hotel is located directly across the road from the fisherman's dock and it made a lovely promenade. We initially hesitated to take a room due to the distance from the public transit routes (that we could see), but all the public transit staff were so friendly and we were all able to travel easily! I'm unsure if I'll be anywhere in the VC area in the future, but if I do, the only hotel I'll he staying in is the Steveston Hotel!

During our three night, four day stay in and around Steveston, we ended up in two separate rooms…read more(I'd originally booked two nights, later adding a third, but our first room had been booked for the third night during the interim), had breakfast in the café (once), and popped in and out of the attached liquor store (staffed by the same employees as the hotel) a handful of times to take a night cap back to our room, so we pretty much experienced everything this place has to offer. Check in (and out) was simple, pleasant, and efficient. Parking is included in the room; just give them your plates and your description of your car, and you're good to go for the entirety of your stay, and beyond; when we asked if it was okay to remain parked there after checking out, while we wandered about the town a bit, we were informed we were cleared to remain parked there for two more days(?!). Overkill, but hey, nothing to worry about then, eh? Our first room, a spacious affair that included a King-sized bed and a massive jetted tub (in addition to the shower in the bathroom) my wife affectionately called the "Honeymoon suite". The bed, pillows and sheets were incredibly comfy, and we both slept well (the same was true of the bed in our second room). The tub, spacious enough for two (or more?! *wink wink*), never lacked for hot water. The room itself was clean, if sparsely and somewhat cheaply furnished; the bathroom similarly spotless, but better appointed. However, there were definite signs of age and wear evident on the walls, window sills, cracks and crevices, all somewhat inevitable in a building as old as this. My wife and I aren't picky, using hotels almost exclusively for sleeping and bathing, so as long as things are clean and tidy, little nitpicks like this do not bother us. I couldn't get the AC unit on the wall to respond to the provided remote at all, though, so we settled with opening the windows to cool the room down at night. We are unbothered, and even enjoy, the sounds of night life activity, and as there is a restaurant/pub ALSO attached to the hotel/cafe, on the other side of the liquor store, there was plenty of activity outside into the wee hours of the night. However, one thing that should be mentioned, even if it did not affect us directly: since all of the rooms are upstairs, one wing of the hotel runs along the 3rd Avenue side of the building, and as such, some of the rooms lie directly over said restaurant/pub. This means that the rowdy drinkers, DJ and karaoke caterwaulers can be heard clearly in these rooms, and the hallway, until closing time, which is 2:00am on the weekends. Now, our room was in the corner furthest from the pub, so we didn't hear a thing while inside, but even opening the door into the hallway, the source of the noise was unmistakable, and I imagine that light sleepers, and those easily perturbed, would not be able to ignore it. It would bother my wife and I, but we're...a different breed of weirdos. As for the café itself, open only for breakfast, brunch or lunch, was serviceable without being remarkable in any way. Think Denny's, Shari's, or the Canadian equivalent of either, and there you have it. As I said before, we only ate there once; we moved on to the Cannery Cafe down the street, and other places, on the following mornings. All things taken in consideration, the most important aspect of the Steveston Cafe & Hotel (as a hotel, anyway) is location, and with few other marks against it (at least in our opinion), my wife and I agreed that we would definitely stay here again during a future visit. If you appreciate its many conveniences, while also accept its many quirks, you'll probably enjoy your stay here as much as we did...provided you can shut out, ignore, or appreciate the noise. If you can, the comfy beds here will guarantee a good night's sleep!
