This is the closest bakery to my house. Their bread is ok, but their prices are out of control - $15 for a loaf of bread? Are you kidding me? The cost of ingredients is about $0.25 and the high school students they employ don't need more deserve a "living wage" (they should look up the definition before they use it as an excuse). I can't see this place lasting ,uch longer given the prices they are charging for what should be a basic staple. read more

First time visiting and I'm really impressed with their selection! They sell coffee and drinks as well. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the store is following COVID protocol. I only got a pain au chocolat but it was so delicious, flakey, buttery with lots of chocolate. I definitely want to return to try some of their loafs and baguettes. read more

Finally got to try their bread today Light Rye - contains 60% rye so for those who are looking for minimal wheat this is the one for you. It comes in 2 sizes: small and large. Great idea as sometimes it could a little longer the finish the same loaf. Love how the crust is not overly thick and the bread is soft and fresh. Almond Croissant - I love this! It was not overly greasy, slight buttery tasting but the texture is the winner for me. I used to like the super flaky type croissant but not so much nowadays. This one is slightly chewy, somewhat dense but in a very good one so there is a great level of satisfaction in every bite. I also appreciate the fact that it is not overly sweet. These guys only use organic flour. There are simply just too much pesticides, preservatives, unnecessary colouring from FD&C dyes in our food today. It is a great thing to seek out alternative to better ourselves. What better way to do so and to support a business who also cares what they put in your food. read more

I've been in a couple of times for the turkey sandwich with cheese and artichoke, heated, to go. It's a decent nosh, not huge, but still a satisfying layering of ingredients that read "housemade" rather than "factory prepared". My daughter and I had manicures in the nail salon a few doors down from this bakery, and I had a massive hankering for a coffee afterward, so we stumbled into this cute, little store. It was fairly empty when we arrived, with only a few customers seated by the window and at the central table. I can see how there wouldn't be ample seating if this place was busy, as there weren't many tables and chairs in the intimate room, but we came at a good time, and we got a seat at the central, large, wooden table. The breads here all looked pretty darn amazing! Beautiful loaves of bread, and gorgeous rustic baguettes. The pastry display was half full, and we decided to get a pain au chocolat as well as an almond croissant. I ordered a latté with 1% milk from the young lady behind the counter. Our croissants were delicious. My almond one was incredible, with the best (and most ample) almond filling I can recall. My kid loved her chocolate croissant, which was flaky and fresh. When I picked up my latté at the counter, it was beautiful, with the foamed milk creating a heart shape on top. It looked like it could grace the cover of a coffee-themed magazine, it was that pretty! But here's where things went south for me: I asked the woman if there was any Splenda, and she looked at me as if I were from Mars. I said, you know, Splenda, or Sweet 'n Low? She didn't understand. I elaborated, any artificial sweetener? Any sugar substitutes? She said she'd ask her manager. She then went to speak to a man a few yards away, near the back, and I could see him look at me with utter disdain and shake his head, as if to say I was out of line for even asking for such a thing! I guess it'd be like if I were at a fancy restaurant and asked a Michelin-ranked chef for some ketchup to go with my steak. Like, the nerve! The manager looked at me and said "we have honey", and turned away. Would anyone seriously put honey in their coffee? Perhaps - but noone I know! I tried doctoring up the latté with the raw sugar they had on the counter but the coffee was super strong for me, and I couldn't get it the way I wanted. My daughter used to be a barista for a few years, and she knows a lot more about coffee than I do. She had some of mine (I couldn't drink it), and she said it was super high quality coffee, but yes, it was strong. I let her have it all. So... if you like excellent croissants and high-quality, strong coffee, you would love this place. If like me you like more mellow coffee and you like to be able to customize your drinks with various sugar substitutes or other beverage "condiments" (for lack of a better word), you will not find what you are looking here. 5 stars for their pastries (and probably for their breads, too) For me, 3 stars for their coffee (and for lack of options re: sweeteners. I should note that they DO have lots of options for milks, though, which is great). For me, 2 stars for the impersonal-at-best, lack-of-caring/snootiest-at-worst attitude when I asked for Splenda. I should add that, when leaving, I wished to have the coffee put in a to-go cup. The counter lady and the manager were in the back, chatting, and no-one was monitoring the counter. My kid and I waited over 5 minutes before they noticed we were there. We just got a cold, uncaring vibe from the staff here in general. Best Americano I've had... maybe ever. Smooth, full flavored, wonderful. We stopped by on our way through Vancouver one Saturday morning. Service was great. There were four of us, we had a butter croissant, almond croissant, cheddar and green onion scone & pain du chocolate - the scone was 4/5, ver close to 5/5. The croissants were all excellent... as croissants are supposed to be made, like in an authentic French bakery. One of us ordered the hot chocolate and it the best hot chocolate he had ever tasted, another of us ordered a latte made with house-made cashew milk and it was also a winner. It is tiny inside, one large communal table taking up most of the space + two 4-top tables and that's pretty much it. But charming and cozy inside. All of us were smitten and I'm sure we will be back again... for that amazing coffee and an almond croissant ... for sure. read more

I stopped in here for a coffee and muffin. Both tasted great! I had the vegan pumpkin seed chocolate muffin (they were sold out of others). It was perfect texture and tasty. The prices were good. $5.25 for a large coffee and muffin. The only thing is I wish there were more of a selection, aside from croissants and muffins. They also sell fresh bread made in house. The store allows one customer in at a time unless you are in a group (in the same bubbles, as Dr. Bonnie H puts it). Outside, people stand about 6 ft behind each other. I came here for a 30-minute-lunch break with the idea of having something to go. The only vegetarian option in their sandwich menu is brie and pear. I'm not a huge fan of brie, but since it was the ONLY option... I asked it to be grilled. BUMMER: it took more than 10 minutes to get it! Plus I had to ask the cashier about it, who, by the way completely forgot who I was even though she took my order just a few minutes before (the place was not even crowded). When I finally got it, I ran to go back to work and ate it super quickly. Not the kind of lunch I like. The sandwich itself was rather good, but since I had to wait 10 minutes for them to grill it, I expected it to be hotter and the pear to have melt a little bit. For $9, I also expected it to be bigger/filling, which was not the case: I was still hungry after eating it and had to grab something else. I liked however that they put a real French pickle (not sweet) in my bag to go. Going back? I wouldn't say no, but a) the staff needs to work faster, specially at lunch time! b) it's 2016, where are the vegetarian options? c) it's too pricey for what you get. read more

I was told by my doctor that this place had buckwheat bread. I recently found out that I'm allergic to gluten so I had to find a replacement bread. I went into the store and asked the owner if he had any. Dear god. That man is the most arrogant prick I've ever come across. And I'm from Europe. So I'm pretty used to arrogant behaviour. All he had to say was that he didn't have any and that would've been it. But he went on a tirade about how he only makes real bread and he doesn't follow what's trendy. I told him I was allergic to gluten and he said "maybe I shouldn't be eating bread then". I can't comment on the actual bread in the store but to me rude behaviour is not necessary. I was very polite to him. I went to a few different stores looking for buckwheat bread and everyone else was polite when they told me they didn't have any. read more

We think their bread is among the very best available. Baguette, French loaf, seed loaf, pastry, coffee, all excellent. Service can be almost weirdly curt sometimes. Noticeable so. It makes us laugh after we leave now. Highly recommend, just don't expect to make any new friends. Lol. read more

Their coffee is done really well. Their pastries - especially their almond and chocolate (and almond chocolate) croissants are incredible. The staff are super friendly and helpful whenever I ask questions. They also carry the best selection of coffee beans in the neighbourhood. Atmosphere here is amazing as well and I could easily stay here for hours, although it does get a little hot in the summer. I would argue that their miche bread is one of the best sourdough loaves in Vancouver that I've tried so far. But my one issue - and it's a big one, unfortunately - is that they sell day old bread at full price. Even Matchstick who does a better loaf of sourdough bread charges 40% less if the bread is a day old. I have no problem buying bread that was baked the day before, and sure, it tastes pretty good. But I don't think as a bread baking business, it's okay to a) not be forthcoming with bread that was baked the day before and b) not take the initiative to discount it if you're still going to sell it. read more

We were looking for a bus stop in the neighbourhood, since all other stops on the street were closed due to some road work, and we stopped here for some water and coffee. We did not buy any bread (it was too hot and we weren't that hungry), but we did try some croissants (lemon and almond ones - almond were better in my opinion, and I was sorry that I actually bought a lemon one instead of more almond croissants) and they were nicely crunchy and some of them still a bit warm. The coffee was good as well. No wait time at all, despite the place being quite crowded (it is small but very nicely furnished). I loved the outside seating. Another cool shop on West 4th to go with the ambiance of the hood. I came here 'cause the word "bakery" caught my attention as it should be. I came in here first to get bread and then came back a few days later since I was in the area for a melt sandwich and a latte to go. I love the bread. Very soft inside and the outter crust is perfect. I come here to get the light rye which goes well with the artisan jam that I bought from Make It over the Christmas holiday. Shortly after the man making the coffee said flabbergasted "Don't take the coffee, it's not yours. I can't take it back now". I apologized as it was an honest mistake. I can't help but think that as he continued to pour the next latte art heart that this as a lie. He shook his head in disbelief that a customer could commit such a heinous act as picking up the wrong latte. Needless to say, we won't be back. Finally made it out there after a morning of venturing out in UBC/Jericho beach land, and found that the folks behind the counter aren't as friendly as I'd expect. That's cool though - I didn't come for chit chat. Just give me my country loaf and I'm off. Got a smaller Country Loaf and an amaretti cookie. The amaretti wasn't my favorite, but the country loaf was pretty solid. Mine was still slightly warm when I got it too! This bakery serves as the supplier for La Ghianda and their rustic sandwiches, which I have found are excellent both on the day of and also as leftovers for the next day. The bread is moist, flavorful but durable enough to weather a day or two more in the fridge even when sliced. Loaves here aren't cheap (they start at $6) but they have a good assortment of hearty country loaves as well as some beautiful looking desserts. Bakery-wise this place is a gem. I think it's the best option for fresh bread in Kits. I am a huge fan of their Danish Rye, Light Rye and Harvest Grain. I also find their baguettes are perfect. The bread just can't get better than it is at BB. Coffee-wise - I tried their americanos, lattes and regular coffee and they were good. Properly made coffee. They have a good selection of coffee beans (their own plus 2-3 varieties from other respectable roasters). The only reason I am not giving them 5 stars is the service. It can be hit and miss. When they are busy (lunch hours), food can take a while. However, if you're in for a cup of coffee and some pastry, the service is quite fine. read more
