This is a repair center, not a coffee shop and not a place to have your hand held. This is a place to go to get appliances repaired, and repaired correctly. If you are the sort of person who is put off by clutter, eccentricities, or old-school New Yorkers, then do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. But you won't find a repair shop that will do as good of a job for as fair of a price as Solomon's. I'm reminded of my grandfather, himself a native of Bensonhurst, who ran a similar business - shoe repair - for decades. His shop was a melange of old displays, handwritten signs, dust, and shoe parts. His demeanor was gruff but honest. His skills were unmatched, and his customers were loyal. That's what you're getting at Solomon's. The veneer might not be up to the standards of midtown Manhattan, but the quality of the work, the prices, and the honest way in which the owner conducts business certainly are. I've been a regular customer here for several years and have always been very pleased with the service. Friendly, fast, honest and they do great work. I do a lot of baking, and when I brought my KitchenAid mixer in for repairs, the owner took the time to explain to me about proper usage to ensure that it does not break (being careful with the speeds when using a dense dough, etc). It is so rare to find an independently-owned appliance repair shop these days. What even rarer is good, personalized customer service, especially in NYC (I've lived here for over a decade and love it but I also grew up in the South and lived in the Midwest....there are very different approaches to customer services depending on the city!). I brought my broken kitchen-aid stand mixer in and Solomon fixed it just as promised. To be clear, there is a system to follow (keep original receipts, non-refundable deposit, must pick up within 30 days, etc etc) but it all makes sense and he has been in business for so long that his system is tried-and-true. I found Solomon to be honest and transparent. He called me to give me the quote of the repair cost and gave me the option to proceed or not. I agreed to proceed and it wasn't a cheap repair but it was less than buying a whole new appliance, and in our throw-away culture it is a gem to find a shop like this. read more

I took a rice cooker to have it fixed here. The service is great. It took almost 2 months to have t fixed which seemed like a long time. Maybe they had to order to the parts but still seemed long. Other than that, it works great now. They were very professional. Would definitely bring other things here to have fixed. Also, cash only, really... I don't understand why Solomon's has gotten such bad reviews. I can only assume the dissenters went there with a New York attitude that I want it fixed and I want it fixed now. This is a small shop and cannot offer that kind of service. What it does have is service impossible to find somewhere else, especially in Manhattan. I called about a repair for a very old toaster oven. It was explained to me that I would have to bring it in, leave a deposit while they looked it over, and if they could fix it they would quote a price and the deposit would be applied to that quote OR I could refuse the repair and forfeit the deposit. I didn't ask when they would call nor how long it would take to repair. Within two days I was called with a quote. After approving the repair, I was called within 10 days and told it was ready to be picked up. When I picked it up, I was offered help with lifting it into the case I had brought to carry it in. When I got home it did work like new and was guaranteed for 90 days. What more can you ask? read more

I took my Waring Pro waffle maker in today, to see if Solomon's could help. The waffles were sticking to the plates, after only six months of use. Bruce, the man at the counter, was courteous, professional and very helpful. Since the waffle maker was still in warranty, I opted to exchange it for a new one, which Bruce will have delivered, at zero cost. I was very happy with my experience at Solomon's, and I wish there were more local businesses like it! I would definitely recommend it. read more

I will never return. Dropped off a repair and, after a couple weeks I called for status; the dude behind the counter (the only guy ever there) said, "the person you need to speak with isn't here." I called back a couple weeks later and the same guy said it was ready but I now had to pay a storage fee (and told me he'd called me 5 times -- lie.) When I got there, I watched him turn out a limping old lady because she couldn't find her receipt -- even though she had I.D. He even said, "I recognize you." and still wouldn't return her appliance. I also discovered later that he over-charged me on sales tax and didn't credit the $40 labor deposit -- screwing me out of close to $50. I had to replace a switch on a Vacume cleaner, I just needed the part. He took a $15. Deposit. It took him about 4 weeks to get the part in (that was after numerous phone calls). When it finally did come in he charged me almost an additional $5. I took the part home and it was the wrong part. He had the correct model number of the machine. I went back he said he would reorder it. I went home and ordered the switch over the internet for $2. About 4 weeks later he calls and days the switch came in, by this time my machine was repaired, but if he had the part I would take it and keep it as a spare. Again he ordered the wrong part, and tried telling me it was the correct switch, even thought it looked nothing like the original and didn't fit. He totally refused to give me a refund. PS the part ordered from the internet was the exact same part, and came in 4 days of ordering read more

be forewarned. i heard that the former owner is no longer there and this once very well run business has come to an end. instead,i was told it is being run by the son and this is the crux of the problem!! i left a Steam Iron with them for repair. after that drop off i never saw my appliance again! i had made many, many phone calls to them and i must have conversed with them at least 10 times. although i asked to speak to the owner/manager i "got nowhere". (although i do believe i was actually speaking to the owner who would not identify himself). they lost my appliance, would never admit it, and never offered to replace it. instead they continued to tell me that they were still attempting to locate my Iron. they were quite nasty and have no understanding of customer service. being poorly run is an understatement!! read more

I had a great experience with this repair shop; the proprieter was friendly and knowledgeable, and yes, he will actually talk to you like a person (oh, the horror!) and take the time to explain what is wrong with your equipment (for me it was a KitchenAid mixer) and the best way to use it without causing undue wear and tear. I spent $180 to fix a machine that would have cost me $600 to buy new, totally worth it. If you want impersonal service by people who don't give a f@#k, go somewhere else (if you can even find another place to service old electrc appliances), but if you want old-fashioned customer service and competent repairs, Solomons is your place. 4 stars instead of 5 because it's cash-only and you have to lug your item down to Bath Beach, but if they can stay in business for 50 years with those little annoyances, they must be doing something right. read more

I took my Phillips Norelco shaver in to be fixed as it needed a new battery. The owner was not nice. He would not give me any estimate on what it would cost to fix, just that getting it diagnosed would be a non-refundable $20, no matter what turned out to be wrong. I told him it was a battery replacement, but he refused to give an estimate. I assured him I would not hold him to that estimate and that it was just so that I could decide if his pricing was fair and if it was more worthwhile to just replace the shaver, and that if it turned out to be something else I would not be upset, but he flatly refused. He also lectured me in a condescending and insulting way about not having brought in the recharging cable, asked how much I paid for the shaver and where I bought it ( I did not remember those details, just that it was definitely out of warranty period) and then acted as if he was superior for me just because I did not know the answers. I had read some of the negative YELP reviews and thought he was just some curmodgeonly but benign paternal figure, typical "old brooklyn" type, which I can appreciate, but that is just not the case. The guy is just a 50-something year old antisocial a-hole with a bad attitude and no interest in helping anyone out. After sizing him up, I decided to leave the place and find somewhere else to get the shaver fixed. When I called Phillips' help line, they said that this shaver is not fixable. Even if the battery runs out, it cannot be fixed. It is meant to be used and then disposed when it starts to die down. So, that would be one whole different YELP review: why buy an expensive, quality electric shaver that is designed for 4 years' use and then to be thrown out. But it does bring up the point: the guy at Solomon's would have knows this, just by looking at the shaver, but did not disclose this important piece of information. It's an old-fashioned "neighborhoody " ( is that a word?) kind of place...nothing wrong with that except I could have done without the paint-by-numbers folksiness of the owner when I first brought it in and had to listen to this nonsense for about 15 minutes...anyway, now my mixer is FIXED and functioning!. read more

This was one of the worst experiences of my life. I am a handy person that has worked construction and fixed many things around my houses and apartment. But I wanted to go to a dealer for my partners KITCHENAID. (Please note that he was the only certified dealer in NY and KITCHENAID should revoke his certification based on his nonexistent customer service.) The place is very out of the way and he and his staff are rude beyond belief but I wanted to hang in so that this got fixed as a present. He gave a bunch of song and dance about how he was the best and would take awhile to fix since he is in such high demand. After months of waiting, I finally call him for the third time to get a status update. Only to be told that he supposedly called me once and left a message and that he was charging more since I had not pick up the item sooner. I calmly explained that I had not received any messages from him only for him to tell me that he calls from a blocked number but that he DEFINITELY left a message. When he started being rude, unreasonably and mansplaining along with hanging up on me during the call, I had to send my partner to pick up. While picking up the item, he tried to coax my partner into giving him a better review because he wanted a better YELP score. This guy is not worth it. Spend your money anywhere but here or just contact the company directly. I could have lived my entire life without meeting this horrible human on his downward spiral through life. read more

Took my Kitchen Aid blender there for repair. It wasn't under warranty, so I didn't have any of the issues the other reviewers had with paperwork. They fixed my blender relatively quickly and showed me why it had broken. It works very well now. The price estimate they gave me on the phone was just about right. I was a little put off by the few negative comments I saw but as I work in the area and the shop is in a very convenient location I tried them out. No problems whatsoever and I will be returning as a customer. Bruce took my order and he was friendly and explained their pricing policies to me. I brought the mixer in on Wednesday afternoon, I received a quote for reapairs the next morning, not cheap but definitely reasonable, and the mixer was 100% repaired the next day, Friday. They ask for a small deposit to examine the problem but if they repair it, that deposit goes towards the bill. I've had a KitchenAid mixer for a few years now and recently it stopped working. I called KitchenAid and was referred to Solomon's Appliance Center in Brooklyn. I took in my mixer for repair and the very nice, knowledgeable, counter man told me not to worry and that when I got it back it would be like new. The next day I was called with an estimate and explanation of what the repair would need, and I gave them my approval. No sooner than a day later I received a call that my mixer was fixed and ready to be picked up. I could not have been more pleased with the fast service, quality of work, and reasonable price. While at the store, I got some KitchenAid accessories that were cheaper than anywhere else I've looked. I also found out that they fix vacuums and many other appliances so I'll surely be back. I just found a piece for my vacuum cleaner at the store. A furniture dusting brush made of horsehair that won't scratch fine furniture as you dust. We have exterior cement work being done and everything needs to be dusted. Our Hoover doesn't come with a very soft brush, in fact the one we have is very stiff and not suitable for furniture cleaning. After going to an Electrolux parts store (only to find it shuttered) I tried Solomon's and low and behold he had just what I wanted. read more

I went to buy a power chord for my mixer and not only did they charge more than what online part stores charge, but it was filthy and actually looked used.
