They go the extra mile... After a new water heater had been installed by a plumbing company, we were told that we were in danger of a carbon monoxide leak. The danger was due to several problems: including wrong sized vent pipes from water heater and furnace that lead to the clogged terracotta lined chimney. Greg and Gary came to give us a free estimate explained exactly what was going wrong, pulling out debris from chimney and showing us chimney tuckpointing base was damaged. After carefully looking at all the issues that needed fixing, Gary said that he was going to replace and refit the pipe that was causing the possible carbon monoxide leak FREE OF CHARGE! Sure enough, he and Greg took new pipe from their truck and spend almost 1/2 hr. replacing old pipe. He said he was worried for our safety. After that, he wrote a very fair, competitive estimate for the aluminum liner and rest of the pipe replacement and chimney sealing. (No hidden fee for the free work he had just done). There was absolutly NO PRESSURE to commit to using Sols for the job. We have not hired them yet because we had already made an appointment to get an estimate from a different company, but I cant imagine anyone being more helpful, considerate, conscientious. Sol's Chimney Sweep takes pride in their craftsmanship and customer service. ----- I was looking to install a chimney cap after a recent squirrel issue- it fell down the flue, was trapped in the exhaust vents for my water heater and furnace, and took a couple (of stressful) days to get it out. Sol's Chimney Sweep was quick to respond for an estimate request, and offered fair pricing for the job. After scheduling an appointment, they called a day prior to confirm the appointment; and on the day of, they called when on their way and arrived on-time. They asked some follow-up questions about the work requested, and then did a great job explaining what they were going to do when installing the chimney cap. While installing, they discovered a structural issue with the chimney crown and the surrounding tile- it wasn't flush together and left a gap between the 2 sections (basically a small space prime for animals to nest in). After coming back down from the roof to show pictures and explain, they offered to seal off the gap. This part of the appointment shows that they take pride in their craft and want to ensure they do things the "right" way; whereas other companies may do what they came to do, and move onto the next job. As they were wrapping up, they took more pictures to show the before/after of the work completed. This is obviously important as I have no business climbing/being on my roof (2 stories up). Greg and Rick did a wonderful job cleaning out out fireplace/chimney and our dryer vents. Both were very dirty. The fireplace had a small crack which they were able to repair on the spot. The grate was cleaned and repainted. The glass doors were left gleaming. They took great care to keep the mess at a minimum and cleaned up all areas before they left. We had Sol's Chimney Sweep out for a fireplace cleaning and inspection on a older house we recently moved into. The team called my cell when they arrived and I said that my wife would let them in, but also pointed out that I think our log starter was corroded and to let me know what replacement would run cost wise (as I already was pricing out replacements online). The cleaning was great and they cleaned up well. Afterwards, they called and left me a voicemail to talk about the replacement log starter. However, before I had a chance to return the call, they told my wife that I authorized the replacement and it would be an incremental $150 so she said ok. The replacement log starter is a $15 piece and is a 3 minute install so no way I would have agreed to that. I understand service charges and minimums but thought this would dovetail into the cleaning and would never had agreed to the fee, nor would my wife had she not been misinformed by the team that I requested the install. By the time I caught wind of this from my wife it was too late and they were already gone. read more

I called multiple companies, who all said that they could schedule me in at the end of October or early November. But then I called Sol's & they immediately responded to my call. I am not one who offers random gushing praise, but holy crap, these folks could not have been more helpful. I called at 8:20 a.m. after having my carbon monoxide alarm go off. I called House of Heat in Oak Park, after being lightly abused by their disinterested phone person who spent the call telling me what they wouldn't do (answer - much of anything), I turned to google. I found Sol's, they have great reviews, you have to start somewhere. Answered on the second ring, talked to the a nice gentleman who I am guessing was the owner. He was honest about his timing today, but then called one of his partners/workers to check their availability. Called my back 5 minutes later. Talked to him (his brother I believe) he was here by 9:00, polite, quick, no mess, they cleared the blockage, removed a faulty cap, installed a new cap with a lifetime guarantee, and were out by 9:35 a.m. House of Heat said that unless I wanted to pay emergency overtime rates they could get someone in Thursday. Sol's in an out within the hour. Now I can't imagine that every job is done this quickly I suspect I got lucky and they went out of their way knowing my situation was dangerous and needed emergency help, but I can assure you they will be responsive and will provide service quickly and expertly. When you turn to Yelp to find a contractor or service provider for something you don't know anything about, I suspect you, as I, do it with concern, are the reviews honest, will I get what I pay for, and so on. They could have tried to sell me extra things and services, I have no idea what I did and didn't need and they did not. Instead they explained every step of the process, offered suggestions and explained what they would do, did exactly what they said they would do, gave me a discount for getting the cap along with the cleaning, were polite and professional, you can't ask for more than that. After purchasing a new home, our inspector told us we needed to get our chimneys cleaned as soon as possible. Sol's team was booked for cleanings out a week but when they came they were prompt (even a little earlier than the window provided!) They had a heavy job ahead as it seems the previous owners did not care for the chimneys in our old home. This company is good. I've seen their company truck in a couple of pricey neighborhoods in the area. Sol's called one day prior to the appointment to confirm it.. They arrived promptly this morning . I have a couple of fireplaces in an older house in the Jackson Park/South Shore area. The deep cleaning and care given to my main room fireplace was thorough. The entire firebox, including the iron damper and fluer d' Lily cast iron fireback was scrubbed clean. The two gentlemen worked together overcoming the challenges of a few hard winters of my heavy use and firewood burning. Their cleaning exposed some unknown and neglected areas of repair and maintenance to the fireplaces. Of three firms we contacted for an estimate, they were the most knowledgeable and their price was best. Unlike with the other firms, the person who came out to spec the job was not a salesman - he's the owner, and he was here working with the crew when they did the job. In the middle of their busiest season, they made a special trip to immediately replace a dangerously deteriorated chimney cap. We made an appointment for them to do the less urgent repairs two months later. I had a really odd experience with these folks. I'd been talking to my landlord (with whom I have an excellent relationship, and who's always good about getting maintenance done) about getting the chimney cleaned, and he said he'd been playing phone tag with a company who only had one opening, around noon on Wednesday. He (the landlord) wasn't available to be here, and would my husband or I be around? I assured him I would be. A few days later, my landlord texts me to say he finally got the chimney guys on the phone, they had booked the Wednesday slot with someone else and were booked solid through the end of the year, so he was going to call elsewhere. Imagine my surprise, therefore, when two guys bearing a Sol's Chimney Sweep business card showed up at 9:00 AM Wednesday - my husband and I both work evenings this month and were still asleep! (In all fairness, they tried to call ahead, but I turn my phone off when I'm sleeping, so it didn't help.) I apologized for keeping them waiting and told them the landlord hadn't mentioned they were coming; they weren't rude, exactly, but were a bit brusque. They got set up and were about to start when one of the guys told me they hadn't worked out payment and needed to do so before they started. Needless to say, I was a bit surprised; I told them I thought the landlord was handling all of that. They asked for his number (??) and called him, but he wasn't available to pick up the phone; they then told me I'd have to pay the $225 cleaning fee or else they couldn't clean the chimney. Normally I'd have had no trouble paying and working it out with the landlord later - I'm in the service industry too, and I totally get what a hassle deadbeat customers are - but all the unknowns in the situation, combined with the guy's confrontational attitude, really put my hackles up. So I apologized again and asked that they leave. They did, but not before the one guy's phone rang, and he was equally brusque with the person on the other end, telling her that she needed to call another number and this was ridiculous, he didn't have a secretary to deal with this, etc. I later got in touch with my landlord, who confirmed that Sol's was the folks he'd been talking with, but he hadn't heard anything back from them after they informed him they were booked. So I don't know where along the line the wires got crossed, but I think it's pretty clear they need to get their administration in order. And a dose of professionalism wouldn't be a bad idea, either. read more

These guys are simply the best. They have put in a liner cleaned my chimney 4 times. Unfortunately they just did a gas conversion so I no longer need to use them but they did an outstanding job. It took me fifteen minutes of looking in the basement for the gas line that runs to the fireplace. The work was that neat and inconspicuous. It is summer now and we wanted to have our chimney swept for the first time in 2 years. Numerous service firms were tied up or on vacation. Sol's responded quickly to our Evanston home. They followed up promptly and addressed our needs: sweeping the chimney, stainless steel liner, new metal rain cap, creating new exhausts for our water heaters and furnace and sealing open areas.
