If you haven't been to Solterra for delicious food and wine, I highly recommend going. Our server Kristin made sure our order got in before Happy Hour ended, and then the food arrived quickly. I had the yummy shishito peppers and tacos. We were seated among the finished wine barrels and production winery space. And the two man band who were playing there last night - Craig and James were jammin' the hits of my high school days in the eighties - country, blues rock, rock, and alternative! read more

(I would like to give the rating 4.5 stars if that was a possibility). This place is super cute, and has some great food and wine. I came here on a Friday night with 6 people and they were able to seat us right away outside which was really nice. We ordered a bottle of the cab sauv and a bottle of the rose. We also spoke to the waiter about the yelp offer for a free wine tasting- there was a little bit of a miscommunication because it's typically supposed to be before 6pm according to their website, but it doesn't state on on yelp. After discussing it with him, he was able to honor it for us which was nice, and the wines were great! The bottle of rose was way too sweet for our liking, so I wouldn't recommend that unless you like super sweet wine, but the rest were good. In terms of good, we started with the seafood paella which was DELICIOUS. I ordered it first because usually paella takes a long time, but this one was small so it didn't. We got 1 for 6 people (along with other food), but I wish we got two because it was so good. The other things we shared were the lamb burger ( which everyone loved and raved about), patatas bravas (also loved), the seabass (I only had a bite but it was really good) and then the shrimp & Grits which were okay, and the mushroom flatbread which was not good. If it wasn't for the last two items, I would say this place is 5 stars in terms of food. My husband never really like lamb and he LOVED the lamb burger. The service was great, definitely 5 stars. The owner came over to talk to us and give us a free bottle of wine (I think because we tried to send back the rose and also the miscommunication about the wine tasting). I would love to go inside and see the winery part when indoor dining is allowed again. Overall, will definitely be coming back and would get lamb burger, paella, patatas bravas, and some other new things from the menu. read more

Atmosphere is beautiful and spacious. We went on a night with live music and we weren't bombarded with loud music. It complimented the space and we were able to still hold a conversation at our table while still enjoying the guitarist. We only came here for drinks before dinner and we ordered some pilzners and pale ales. All were delicious. We also sampled their pinot grigio and rose. The pinot grigio was light and refreshing. The rose of malbec was a little dry for my taste but the hints of berries were very pleasant. I would love to come back to sample the food and some more wine. Overall we had a lovely experience. read more

Food was amazing! Cheesecake was delicious! And the wine tasted yummy! Beautiful place, and great atmosphere. Customer Service was ok, initially the waitress took forever to take our order and food took too long to come out. It wasn't that busy so didn't like the service. Will eventually go again and give this place another chance because it was a cute place and food was good. read more

I don't frequent Leucadia or Encinitas all that often but was giddy when I came across Solterra Winery & Kitchen some many months ago. I knew instantly I wanted to have my birthday celebration here. There's front and back outdoor patio seating. This is the wine barrel room where they bring in the grapes to make their wine. This room is also used to host private events. I didn't realize Solterra Winery & Kitchen offered a lunch menu as there was only one menu (dinner) published on their website. SO, I was paralyzed with confusion when I noticed a different menu, other than the one I had researched over and over again online, placed in front of me. Solterra Winery & Kitchen does offer a lunch menu that has sandwiches & crepes. We tried: CHARCUTERIE & CHEESE PLATTER There were about 4 cheeses, 3 meats, dried fruit, and nuts beautifully presented on a slate rock plate. I'm not sure if you can choose the meats/cheeses for the boards though. The platter is served with thick slices of Sadie Rose (?) bread. The soft bread was a nice welcoming addition to some of the creamier cheeses that day. CRISPY CAULIFLOWER I only took a bite of this and thought it wasn't too bad. GLASS OF RED They sell a variety of wines here and I think this is a glass of their Granache (friends ordered my drinks that day). They also serve a few craft beers on tap as well. CREPE I think the wine was kicking in at this point because I don't remember the details of this savory crepe other than that it looks delicious. STEAK SANDWICH We wholeheartedly LOVED this sandwich. I wish I could remember the specifics of this sandwich (I wish I had their lunch menu). The steak was quite tender and flavorful. It was a nice sized portion sandwich that was easily shared by two friends (we had all that stuff on the charcuterie & cheese plate earlier though). I'd happily order this sandwich again. CHICKEN SANDWICH I think this was a chicken sandwich. I texted this pic to everyone asking what this was and everyone replied 'who cares get back to work and stop blogging'. Our server, Elaine, was amazing. She was attentive and personable. All of us loved her. I can't wait to come back, perhaps to try out their dinner menu or have a glass of wine in their front patio with a friend. There's not very many places like Solterra Winery & Kitchen so they're a fun addition to North County. There's only street parking or dirt parking right in front by the train tracks. It gets busy at night so try to make reservations if possible. read more

The vegetarian paella is delicious! Highly recommend if you are a vegetarian or non vegetarian! Ask for some sauces on the side. I think it could use a tad more flavoring. Once you add those, the dish is perfect! Also there sunchoke hummus plate is delicious and comes with a good amount of hummus, veggies, and flatbread! read more

It's a traditional beach setting with lots of wine barrels and rustic wood. The food and service are good and the wines are produced by the owner. The food is is good and well priced. The featured entree is paella (5 types). I make a tastier and more authentic paella at home, using familiar ingredients and saffron for the rice. The saffron can be bought for reasonable prices and very little is used per serving. Give me a call and I'll help to improve the product with very little cost and effort. This place is cool. It's hard to your review when you just go to have one glass of wine and then move along but I was so impressed by the decor and all the barrel casks and just the loveliness of this location that I had to go ahead and give it a thumbs up.... I love that they have indoor and outdoor seating, I love that it's very casual, I love that both the servers and bartenders were very very friendly, and I will definitely be back here to update my review! read more

I really like the concept of the urban winery. Not everyone can go out into the countryside and visit the vineyards (although I do highly recommend that). Hence, the birth of the urban winery. Great wine making done right in the city. Solterra is easy enough to miss if you're driving down the 101. But make an effort to find it because you'll be glad you did. The interior is comfortable; lots of wood gives it a warm feel, while the silvery steel bar adds a touch of class. They have wine from all over California...central coast, local, etc., and even from Mexico. I got a flight of different wines, including full bodied reds like Zinfandels and Sirah (I didn't misspell it; that's how the winery does). Everything was spectacular, especially the unfiltered 2007 Petite Sirah and the 2012 Dry Creek Zin from the LB vineyard. The food here is great, too. I had the most amazing Navarra Lamb Burger with added Manchego cheese. Slightly spicy, meat seasoned to perfection, even a yellow tomato instead of the normal red. Almost too pretty to eat! But wow, the taste was out of this world. Service here was awesome. Anne was knowledgeable, friendly, and a pleasure to talk to. Going here was a real treat for me. read more

This is my absolute favorite wine bar and restaurant in Encinitas. It's romantic for a date night and fun if you want a girls' night out. Andrea is an awesome host. Always classy and so welcoming. Servers Cindy, Ian and Gabriela are friendly, fun, and treat you like family. Delicious dishes and beautiful presentation prepared by Chefs Margo and Julia. No matter what we order, my husband and I are always delighted with our meal! Owner and Winemaker Chris Van Alyea offers a wide variety of wine selections. This place is amazing wonderful people, great location with excellent food and wine selection. I also appreciate the masks they wear. Some idiots in other reviews I see don't like the masks in other reviews. Maybe they shouldn't be eating out. Solterra has invested in food service approved masks that allow me to see their face. This is definitely a great romantic dinner place to go. read more

I came here for Wine Wednesday happy hour with my coworker and it was a nice experience! We each had two glasses of wine (me-Chardonnay 18 SB, her-18 Pinot Noir), the squash blossoms, and charcuterie board. If you're a fan of goat cheese, get the squash blossoms they were fabulous! The charcuterie was massive, lots of cheeses and meats with sides like jam, salad, olive tapenade, etc. The environment was cozy and comfortable. We were there for probably two hours and we did not get rushed and felt well taken care of. read more

Went here to do the wine tasting with some friends. Service was terrible, food was terrible, wine was terrible. $14 for a cheese plate that looks like this? You have to be kidding me! And on top of that, the lady who delivered it dropped it off at our table and said "sorry, I don't know what these are!" And left with no explanation of what she brought us. This was my 3rd bad experience here in the past year, optimistic that it had gotten better, but nope! Don't waste your time or money here. read more

I have been to Solterra many times for wine, but never tried the food. Arrived Friday at 4:30pm and snagged two seats at the bar. I had a glass of the cab franc and my friend ordered the zin (both were great). For food we split the shrimp. 6 shrimp in a calabrian pomodoro sauce. Amazing. I want my own next time. We also ordered the cauliflower which I would recommend. It's a great venue and others must agree as it was packed when we left. read more

I don't give 5 stars because: -the service was kind of slow (but still was on a Sunday night, maybe they were too tired) -the tapas are awesome but too small For the rest, 5 stars, as it is a lovely place for any type of gathering, specially smalls groups or just go by yourself and get a nice glass of wine and some castelvetrano olives while you contemplate the stars from the window. Leucadia is so beautiful at night! Love how amazing this place looks at night! I was celebrating the birthday of a friend and we shared some tapas. But...even if I love octopus, I am from Spain, and that is not the Spanish way. I will call it Mediterranean fusion. The dish was delicious, but I prefer more of the octopus than the mash potatoes. Flavor was great and texture was perfect for me. The castelvetrano olives are one of my new discoveries from last year and I simply cannot live without them! That green color is so lovely you cannot just eat one. They came marinated with red peppers and delicious flavor. Perfect pairing with my merlot. The beet salad with fennel was exquisite and so pretty, colorful and flavorful with that delicate pistachio mousse added. I was initially confused thinking that was pesto, but could not quite get it until asked the waiter. We did not like the asparagus tapas. Strange that comes with an egg, so we asked to sub the egg for tomato but still there was something off about this dish and just not my favorite flavor. Ambiance is excellent, love the 2 different spaces and the terrace outside too. read more

ANDREA & IAN & CINDY are incredible. I've come here so many times and I can't believe I am just now leaving a review. The whole company has always been so kind to me but Andrea & Ian & Cindy have always stuck out to me as not only providing me with personalized service but just being genuinely kind individuals. My wife told me if I write too positive a review we will have less availability for seating. Our go-to date night to enjoy an easy, comfortable winery/food experience. The staff ( Andrea to warmly greet you, Sean, Jason, Ian, Will and others) are knowledgeable on wine and for 6 years we have appreciated the skill Soltera's Owner/vintners possess. From blends of Sonoma/Napa/ Lodi and coastal grapes, to stand alone varieties, we have never been disappointed and often wonderfully impressed. We have spent months in grape regions of Italy, Spain, France, Portugal,New Zealand, and are happy to recommend Solterra Winery, Kitchen as wonderful lace to go. Cheers. P.S. the food, ( especially the short rib paella, calamari, tapas ) are very nicely done. read more

Chef Margo never disappoints. Make sure you try the prawns and polenta appetizer. She adds tiny pieces of chorizo and barely wilts the spinach. She truly puts her heart into her cooking. Also, I HIGHLY recommend Ian as your server! He was next level! Some of the best service we've ever received! He not only recommended the perfect food and wine but had everything send out and the beeest time! He was phenomenal and I'll definitely be asking for him when we go back. My sis n I came for lunch on a Sunday. It was slow when we first arrived. First off they only have 2 white wines and lots of reds (I perf white) . We each did a wine tasting. 6 for $10 which I though was a good deal. The place didnt seem busy, but servers seemed alil slow or not too attentive. One gentleman made an effort to give us info on the wines n the owners. The guy behind bar seemed busy. The cheese meat combo platter was great, nothing to complain there. 4 diff cheeses, nuts , olives, bread meats & jams! We were stuffed didn't get to try anything else. But all the food others ordered around us looked really good. The wine is ok. I liked the chardonay n pinot noir. They were out of a few of their wines. I would go back to try some seafood . read more

My husband and I went mid-week to do a wine tasting. The wine tasting room looked open, but they shuffled us over to the restaurant (which was empty, too). We were sat at the restaurant's bar, and the one employee in that room was our server. Service was sloooooooow. Since it was so slow, and we were seated in the restaurant anyway, we figured we may as well order some food: soup & sandwich for my husband, a bunless burger for me (I'm gluten-free, and that was the best option I could find). Wine knowledge was decent. The server was nice. But I think the wines must sit there until they're eventually emptied, because the wines all tasted the same. I have a feeling the wines would have tasted better if I'd tasted them in the wine bar, where I imagine they go through each bottle much faster. Not only did the wines taste like they'd been opened for far too long, but they just didn't taste good. When I - the wine snob - opt to be the designated driver, then you know the wines weren't good. Lunch took forever to come out of the kitchen. My husband's sandwich & soup looked SO good, and he said it was excellent. My bunless (because I'm gluten-free) burger was dry, and I left hungry. This was a real letdown. read more

A really fun place with a cool California vibe. Good food, but not much discount at Happy Hour and the waiter forgot to give us the discount anyway. Come here to taste the interesting wines, some of which (Syrah and Zinfandel) are quite good and hear very good music. Three settings with very different ambience: 1) the barrel room smells like wine and has great acoustics and community tables. 2) The restaurant is cozy with nice views of the street and a great sit down tasting bar. 3) The outside patio, with cool ocean breezes and s nice fire pit. date night at SOLTERRA WINERY and KITCHEN. the wife-unit started with the RED WINE flight -- a promising beginning. in the timeless wisdom of OGDEN NASH, "candy is dandy but liquor is quicker." the MERLOT, CAB, SYRAH and PETIT SYRAH were pronounced "solid" with the SYRAH being her favorite. i had a glass of the VIOGNER. their menu which is heavily weighted toward the tapas end, definitely focuses on how we like to eat -- lots and lots of small tastes. i am not a fan of oiled nuts (i'm sure they're wonderful just not in my sweet spot), so i barely snacked on the ROSEMARY ALMONDS. loved the BOQUERONES (marinated white anchovies) -- like oily nuts, they're also an acquired taste but that's a taste i have acquired. their tart, twangy fishiness paired nicely with my white wine. i'm a big fan of the OCTOPUS (chorizo, butter poached potato, chimichurri, smoked honey and fried capers), braised until tender and then grilled. love the little charred bits on the squiggly legs. she just can't say "no" to charcuterie but was intimidated by the MIXED PLATE (and for good reason, it's huge) so settled on the CHEESE PLATE (4 artisan cheeses and house-made condiments) which turned out to be just the right size. the decadent CHOCOLATE DECADENCE CAKE (merlot-balsamic reduction and seasonal berries) was the wife-unit's personal indulgence. glad i'm the designated driver. home again, home again, jiggity jig. maybe we can get the kids to bed early. read more

We'd previously really enjoyed the food and had a great time at Solterra. This visit, however, was actually terrible in multiple ways from mediocre food, awful service, and overwhelmingly loud ambiance - one of our worst dining experiences in a long time. We came on an early Saturday night with reservations as a party of 5 including an infant (noted on the reservation) to celebrate a birthday. They sat us directly in front of the speakers which were incredibly loud and would not allow us to move to a quieter area. It was loud enough that none of us could talk (and unfortunately it distressed our baby, further making the meal difficult) - a little baffling that they chose this table for us when they have other areas available. Moving onto the service - the waitress asked if we wanted our food to come as it was made since we were eating family style. Normally that means perhaps our 3 appetizers would stagger out and then our 3 mains would be fired and stagger out as we were finishing appetizers so we agreed. However, what that resulted in was a long wait (even for the salad and hummus) and then all 6 dishes coming out within 2 minutes of each other. A bit overwhelmed at the table with the amount of food, we asked them to hold the last two entrees. We first were admonished by our waitress that we had agreed to "food as the kitchen was ready with them" and then were reassured both by our waitress and other staff that they would refire those dishes. Unfortunately, when the last two dishes did come out, it was clear these were not refires - simply held dishes that were brought out again. To make things more frustrating, it was a struggle during the whole meal to find our waitress to discuss any of the above matters. She also did not check in on us again until we were almost done with the meal. They also never cleared out table of the 4 extra place settings that were set out but yet somehow took away a bowel for shells before we were finished with our seafood dish. Really the opposite of great service, especially as we were trying to celebrate a birthday. Finally the food itself just wasn't up to the prior standard. Letting the seafood paella sit certainly didn't help the quality of the food as it came out both overly dry and mushy. Prior paellas we'd had here were delicious, with crunchy bits of rice from the edge of the pan and great texture and flavor overall, so this was very disappointing. The sunchoke hummus didn't taste of sunchoke and was essentially what you'd expect from a grocery store hummus platter with mediocre pita and some basic raw veggies. The fish special and short ribs were better, as was the beet salad and the brussel sprout, but they still weren't up to the prior standard. It's sad to see what used to be a very solid local option decline so much. What a disappointment. Edited to follow-up on Chris' response below: All that was needed was a "We're sorry you didn't have a good experience and we hope to make it up to you next time". Unfortunately the rest of his response doesn't match our experience and deflects from the real criticisms in our review. There's no way that the paella was refired (it came in less than 1 minute after we said we were ready for it to be fired), we did ask if we could be reseated (they couldn't), and we obviously did make a comment to her about the food all coming together -- but only after we'd requested the same with the server who brought the paella because we hadn't seen our waitress in a long time. Due to the volume at our location and how infrequently we saw them, it was difficult to communicate with the staff in a lot of depth. read more

I've been here a few times for work dinners and I agree it's worth a repeat. Parking can be a challenge on the main road but there is almost always parking in the coaster lot across the street. Ambiance is nice here - classic Cali inside out approach with wood based design and garage doors/ windows. Menu is really nice on the wine and food fronts. It's small plate style so I think I've had every item on the main menu. Love the olives and almonds. And the charcuterie plate is well designed with tasty assorted options. The steak was cooked perfectly and sliced so easy to share. Salad options are gastropub fresh. The crispy cauliflower was so good we had to order a second round of it! The fresh grilled peach and pancetta flatbread was scrumptious. I was there during the winter holidays and they had some really nice decor. There were also selling candles poured into half wine bottles which smelled lovely and would make a nice gift. I'm guessing they have those year round. This place is great for a casual evening out with friends or family. read more

Wow this place is impressive. The seafood paella is outstanding. Great quality of seafood and the rice had the perfect chew/slight crunch that you want from pan cooked paella. I had a great first and second experience at this place and joined the wine club since I live close by and thought it would be a fun spot to stop in for a glass of wine. The first bottle I got was turned. It was so turned if tasted like vinegar. I had 3 other people check to make sure it wasn't just me. I had the same Chardonnay in the restaurant a couple times and it was great. I had 3 other people taste test and smell it to make sure I wasn't just imagining it Of course they allowed me to return it when I brought it back and gave me a new bottle. The new bottle was not much better. I called to cancel my membership and got no response. In the meantime they charged my card for a 3rd month of wine club (I've only received 1 bottle). When I emailed them they told me that there was a 4 month minimum for the membership, which was not told to me when I signed up. The person who signed me up literally said, "You can cancel anytime" not anytime after 4 months. So as of now, I have gotten one bottle of wine for $135 invested into the wine club and it was horrendous. Solterra decided to stop replying to my email and keep the $90 I paid for spoiled wine I did not receive and I will never return. I highly recommend you stay away as as well and definitely DO NOT join the wine club. read more

The service was great and we enjoyed the food as well! I found two wines I really liked. We were looking for a vineyard to celebrate my birthday and their website has a beautiful photo of a vineyard in their advertisement. Instead, we arrived at a storefront (which was disappointing). In addition, their menu stated something like "visit our tasting room and vineyard." I asked the waiter where the vineyard was located and I was told they really didn't have a vineyard, just a spot in the back of the building that had a few grapevines. read more
