We tried this restaurant and really wanted to give it a chance since the several restaurants that tried to make it at this location have closed. I love tapas and this was a great addition to the area. Unfortunately our experience was not that great. The server was pleasant and nice, however, being that we were seated outside and there were only a few customers inside, there was no wait staff to be found outside. I had to go inside twice to get someone. I don't know if this lovely server was the only working both inside and out. The ambience is nice and could have complemented the food. The food looks great but seemed to be missing the mark. The steak was pretty expensive considering it's not a steakhouse charging steak house prices. We truly tried to like the food but it just didn't hit the spot. I am glad that some reviewers do find this place great. I found myself at Somni NY Tapas to meet up with some of my college friends. Monroe was a natural midpoint for us to meet since some of us live in the NYC area while others live in the Albany area. One of my friends chose this spot, and after looking over the menu I thought it was a great spot to relax and catch up. Somni is not surrounded by much, but they have a large space which includes ample parking and plenty of outdoor seating. There was inclement weather when we arrived, so we were seated inside where the spaciousness continued. As soon as you walk in you're greeted by a large bar area with the dining room to the left. The decor had a mostly dark color scheme with lots of woods accented with reds; they also had music playing as well as a DJ booth set up. The menu specializes in tapas, but we were there for brunch which offers a more traditional menu. Before food, we started with drinks; I had the red sangria which was pretty good. They offer a few drinks (including the sangria) as bottomless for 2 hours for $30 which wasn't a bad deal - but since I wasn't planning on having more than one round it was not worth it for me. Anyway, we started with a few shareables - namely the chips and guac and the spinach and cheese empanadas. The chips and guac were fine, though it looked like the chips were actually fried in house which was a nice touch. I thought the empanadas were quite good - they were stuffed with a generous helping of spinach and were really fresh - like this didn't seem like a frozen empanada so real kudos to them. The aioli that came on the side complemented the empanadas well. For my main I had the grilled chipotle chicken sandwich which came topped with mozzarella, a chipotle aioli, lettuce and tomato all on ciabatta bread. I didn't sense any heat on the sandwich, but I didn't mind because the flavors were great - all the components worked well together; the fries that came on the side were good as well. We also decided to order French Toast for the table; this was interesting as the bread was deep-fried before being drizzled in a caramel sauce and topped with fruit. That definitely make the dish interesting, though I'm not sure it added anything to it overall. We decided to have dessert and I went with the crispy Fuji apple; I felt the way this was described on the menu was a little misleading as I thought it was going to be something like a baked apple wrapped in dough but it's actually more of a turnover. Nevertheless, it was good - it was fried well but not overly greasy; it came with a scoop of butter pecan gelato which was a nice reprieve to the relative heaviness of the turnover. Service was great - everyone we interacted with was super friendly and made sure we were taken care of; they were really going above and beyond which I appreciated. Overall, I had a great time at Somni; this place is not in my backyard, but my friends and I left with such a positive experience that we have no qualms returning for our next meetup - perhaps for dinner to try out their tapas. read more

The pros: - Lovely atmosphere, ambience, and decor. Sets the stage for a nice date night and they had a pretty good playlist. - Service: our server unfortunately I can't remember her name. She was awesome and took good care of us. Considering we came just in time for happy hour we decided to start with cocktails (Hooray!) I started with the "Gimme Agave" 2 words Very Strong. For the second round I ordered the "Rocks on the Rocks" that one actually tasted like a drink and not just like tequila (Casamigos) on the rocks . I loved it. Cons: Having said this, the rest of the meal was just ok. By this time I was feeling buzzed so I felt like just eating appetizers. I realize the appetizers resemble tapas style portions but I was expecting to get slightly bigger portions. -The ceviche mixto was ok, They actually could do without so much of that ok tasting cocktails sauce it would've tasted so much better if it wasn't drenched in it. -The tostone seemed a bit stale like it stood out then microwaved before serving. -The lamb meat was actually good, possibly a bit overcooked. Surprisingly good bar and grill across the street of our hotel. Mediterranean food with a Latin twist is how I'd describe the food there. It's an interesting mix of Bar and Grill. I wouldn't describe it as "fine dining" but they are trying their best to make it a classy environment, although it's hard to escape the sports bar feel with all the TVs playing sports. I really enjoyed their empanadas as our appetizer. They were perfectly crispy without being oily. We also ordered their Ceviche Mixto which was good, but different from what I expected. Their homemade cocktail sauce reminded me too much of Chinese sweet and sour sauce. I would have preferred a more traditional ceviche with citrus and chilis. The highlight of my meal was the Moqueca Stew. I believe it's a Brazilian dish, but actually almost reminded me of a sweeter Thai coconut curry. Rich and full of seafood goodness, I would definitely recommend. My wife got the Branzino served with mash potatoes and garlic sautéed spinach. It was tasty but a bit on the oily and heavy side. Portions were great and pricing was reasonable. Service was also excellent and food came out quickly. I would definitely recommend if you're in town, especially if you are staying at the Sleep Inn across the street. read more

Sad to say, I will not come back. First we were a group of 9, we were okay with being outside but when I confirmed with the hostess she assured shade. Guess what, we were in the blazing hot sun and when asked to move to a shaded table they informed my mother on Mother's Day that was our designated spot. The manager said we can go inside but we really wanted to stay outside with the DJ who never came. My husband ordered a steak, 41$ with no sides and the waitress didn't even bother to mention that. When I approached the waitress about dessert I asked if we can sign happy birthday for my aunt she stated "we don't give free dessert " in which I told her I didn't ask her for a free dessert. The DJ finally came around 1pm with his elevator music. PS the table they didn't want us to sit in with shade was still empty when we left. Along with many other tables with shade. Poor menu. Empanadas are 2" literally and to add insult to the bite size pizza bites cause that's what they look like, they're $7 for two!! Not big enough to stuff them with what they claim to have inside. Some corn breaded calamari and aioli?? It's fried calamari with some ketchup/Mayo sauce. Call a spade a spade and too salty. The bad first. Parking is a problem. There's an apartment building next door that owns all the parking. In inclement weather, you could find yourself walking 50+ yards in rain or snow. The kitchen is open giving you access to seeing the preparation of food. But, if you're sitting close to the kitchen, the light is bright, in direct contrast to the warm, low light in the rest of the dining area. After speaking with the bartender, Manny-also, half of the ownership- I got the back story on the hurdles they had to overcome to open the restaurant. With that, its easy to overlook some of the minor esthetic issues. There are two floors, they are not ready to open, which leaves dining downstairs, and downstairs only has one unisex bathroom. Moving on to service. The head hostess/manager was selective as to who she was attentive to. That was slightly off putting, but not really an issue because, Francesca and Kiera, our waitresses, more than made up for it. Now, the good. Don't bother trying to decide what you want or aking the staff what they suggest. Put the menu on the table, close your eyes, and put your finger anywhere. Yeah, it's good. Oh, and that is good too. That, especially is really good. The steak doesn't need anything, but the salantro and parsley chimichurri is just mild enough to not be overbearing, but bold enough to announce its presence, respectfully. Now, I'm rethinking the parking situation because I would have walked a mile for this perfectly cooked steak. Paired with asparagus, that had just the right amount of crisp, light garlic, and zero asparagus-sy bitterness. And then there's the sweet corn puree...all this together, absolutely nothing was off balance. Just the right amount of flavors complementing each other. Decided to try this place for restaurant week. Staff was very friendly and the place is very welcoming. Music was very country and didnt fit the Spanish/Mediterranean vibes. We came before 6pm so were able to participate in the happy hour drinks and the margaritas were delicious. We also got chicken empanadas, guacamole, and short rib buns to start. Portions were very small but delicious. I got the airline chicken which had a perfect and delicious crust on it. I personally not a fan of the inner taste though. Bland and dry. The mashed potatoes tasted like butter but they paired wonderfully with the veggies. My fiancé got the salmon which looked and tasted delicious. Cooked perfectly with a wonderful sear. The sauce for it was also delicious. We split the poached pair for dessert and it was very good. Came here on a Wednesday night for first time. Wife ordered the duck breast and I had a burger. The duck breast was for my wife and she loved it. Wasn't a big portion - so she ended up a bit hungry still at the end. My dry aged burger was awesome - among the best that I have eaten. A bit pricey for the burger up in Orange County at $25. BUT- I would get this without any hesitation. Not only was it cooked exactly to my preferences (medium rare to rare) but it has such a deep flavor that I haven't had in a very long time (last time was at Daniel Boulud's cafe in NYC.). The person there mentioned that they hand mix the meats at the restaurant and I can taste there is something different about this. The service was very prompt and good. My brothers and husband and I ate here last night and it was great. We perfect cocktails made by Manny at the bar before we were seated at out table. Two beautiful martinis, one dirty and one gin, both yummy. Joslyn our server was informative and attentive. We ordered almost everything from the tapas menu and everything was delicious. Horrible restaurant. Very unprofessional. My brother and his fiancé called ahead to request access to their bar after their wedding and was assured by the owner that they could bring the wedding guests over after the wedding which would be at 10PM. On the night of the wedding our party arrived and they were closing the restaurant. When we asked what was going. We were met with hostility. At one point the owner said did you get it in writing, then it means nothing. He denied ever having the conversation with them. They would refused to help or make any accommodations. This was our first time trying Somni. Some aspects of our experience were good, but some not so great. The room was very cute with a nice fireplace. As there was a chill in the air, that was a nice touch. However, the brunch menu was very limited and some items I had seen online (like a salmon dish and fried calamari) were not on the menu at the restaurant. The empanadas are minuscule, so you have to order at least 2 portions. Also, the coffee cup for a latte is very small. Same for the regular coffee cup. Eggs benedict was pretty good, although the dressing on the greens was too vinegary. That was disappointing, since I like to eat salad. Service was very good though and the staff friendly and attentive. So, overall a good experience but some improvements are needed. read more

We came up to the area and couldn't check into our hotel until 3pm...so we headed over to Somni for brunch. We were pleasantly surprised with everything. The service was attentive. There was live music. The food was very good and the drinks tasty. We started with the waitresses' suggestion of a special brunch cocktail...Liz was recommending that we get either a Basil Watermelon Margarita or Sangria. We chose the Margaritas. Then I ordered a Tortilla Espanola which is a Spanish style eggs, potatoes, and peppers. With a lovely creamy sauce drizzling just the right amount of heat. My husband chose the Hangar steak panini, it came with home fries and a small mixed green salad. The waitress informed us the steak was not going to be cooked to order but that was fine as the onions and seasonings in the sandwich were sufficient. We sat after the main meal and enjoyed a beer, some more music and then split a dessert of fried apple dumplings topped with Lucuma ice cream (tastes like sweet potatoes with maple syrup) and a caramel drizzle. Considering we just happened by and had never heard of this place before we were quite pleased. I would love to try dinner next time and consider upping my rating as I am sure it would be great. Not sure if there was a chef change, we were there on an off night, or I just ordered the wrong dishes but the food quality wasn't there this time. Tuna tartare app was a little pale and grey. They diced the tuna and mixed it into an aioli that tasted a little like mayonnaisey egg salad. Not what I envisioned and the excessive mayo and spice made it taste bad. Then the sea scallops over risotto for $31. Four small scallops (3/4" diameter) on a bed of overly cheesy and heavy risotto. The scallops were pan seared and excellent on their own but I could have made that at home. The risotto was almost inedible. My wife had the clams and hanger steak which were both very good hence my 3 stars. I hate to go negative on a local establishment but you should know. read more

Came here after a long day of shopping at Woodbury Commons (only about a 6-10 minute drive from the outlets). For a Tuesday night, it wasn't too crowded but made a reservation online just to be safe. We were greeted by our waitress and gave us the option of sitting inside or outside. Since it was a nice day, we decided to sit outside. Very spacious with tables equipped with umbrellas to ensure the sun isn't in your face. There's also a full outdoor bar as well for people who want to sit on high tops. For drinks, we decided to get a pitcher of the rose sangria. Lucky us, the waitress told us we just made it in time for happy hour. For food, we ordered a variety of appetizers and entrees to share across our party of four. Some of our favorites included the beef short ribs, bucatini clams, and the grilled octopus. Not to say that the other food wasn't good because it really was but those were the most memorable dishes. Our waitress was the sweetest - really accommodating, very bubbly and a pleasure to meet. We wanted so much to enjoy this restaurant! Walked in and immediately loved the ambience and were promptly greeted and seated. The server quickly arrived to take drink orders and throughout the night she was on her game constantly doing an amazing job refilling beverages. We enjoyed all our flavorful tapas (risotto balls, lobster rolls, shrimp, and bacon) and our appetizers were also very good ((butternut squash ravioli and clam chowder). That's where my positive feedback ends. At that point we sat there waiting for nearly 25 minutes for our entrées to come out. The server never came out giving us any kind of an update. The restaurant was only about half full and we had arrived early (6 PM) to avoid a problem like this. Feedback on the food: the burgers lacked flavor. The lamb shank had a funky seasoning maybe Chinese five spice or some thing that just didn't sit well with us. I did enjoy my short rib with rigatoni. Because my husband barely touched the lamb shank, a kind gesture would've been to remove it from the bill. But instead, a free dessert was offered. The best part that our server offered was how wonderfully she stayed on top of refilling our waters. But her enthusiasm as a server left a lot to be desired. Somni Restaurant is a hidden gem in Monroe! The portions are plentiful, the food is eclectic and full of flavor, the service is fantastic, and the atmosphere is lovely! We had two tapas-lobster tacos (delicious, and bursting with tons of different flavors that came together beautifully), and guac and chips (the perfect combination of mashed avocados, pico de gallo, jalapeños, cilantro, and lime juice). Our entrees were grilled calamari (the freshest, most delicious butter lettuce and sweet, ripe tomatoes under grilled calamari in a light but flavorful pesto drizzle), and the branzino (a very generous portion-2 large pieces perfectly sautéed with smooth and creamy mashed potatoes, and perfectly prepared spinach. The flan is a must dessert...it rivals my great aunt's, and no one has EVER come close to hers! The slightly sweetened homemade whipped cream made this dish sublime! The kiddos had linguine (which we realized was homemade with one bite) with butter...marinara sauce is also an option. We have picky eaters, and they were beyond content.
