My friend highly recommended this place so I figured I would come in for toner since my last balayage had grown out and I wanted to make my roots less apparent. The people in the salon were nice and I came in with an idea of what I wanted for color. Leo explained the color wheel and how they were going to blend the demarcation line and tone my roots. It must've been a busy day because they ran out of hot water for washing hair. When it came time to apply the color I feel like Leo was very hands off as another stylist applied the color under his instruction. I saw a lot of old balayages with toner that blended beautifully with a nice gradient on Leo's IG but I feel like I didn't necessarily get that same treatment. As I sat in the chair two other customers came in and I feel like his focus was on the other two girls so much so that he asked me if it was okay that he doesn't style my hair and stated "but you won't leave the salon with wet hair" I was very surprised but they at least blew dry my hair after rinsing the color out. $200ish with tip and a month and half later the state of my hair is as pictured even after following strict instructions to use color safe shampoo and washing infrequently with no heat tools. I have been to a few salons here in Soho and Sonder hair salon is by far the best. My hair artist was Mike and I can't say enough about how awesome he is. He takes out time to talk to you about what you want and will give you honest advice. I really appreciated that because many stylist just get straight to work without trying to understand the clients vision. Mike sat next to me and explained me what will work best for my hair and answered all my questions and concerns. The process didn't feel rushed at all. He used two different toners: one for the root and one for the base to achieve this. I appreciated his thoroughness in getting what I want but in a realistic fashion from how dark my natural hair is. Came in the other day for a haircut. Loki is pretty dismissive and not super willing to give me the haircut I asked for (an inch or so off and layers/angles throughout). Told me my hair is too thin and won't look nice - the haircut I've gotten my whole life. Did a fine job on the haircut, honestly can barely notice I even got one. While blow drying, the whole salon staff had lunch and honestly stunk up the place / blew the smell of their food into my hair. I had to shower and wash my hair when I got home it lingered so bad. At the beginning of the appointment, I told him I only style with a round brush blow dry. When finishing up the blowdry, he tells me he's going to curl my hair with a curling iron. I asked him not to and said a blowout is all I need. He scoffed and said, yet again, that my hair wouldn't look nice without a curl bc it's thin and that they know what they're doing / have a great curling iron. I respectfully declined the offer and held firm to just the blow out. The vibe shifted from there on. Overall bummed by the experience - and $95. Not cheap for something that's not even noticeable. He showed me swatches and took into consideration what would look best on me. It's the little things too about their service that I appreciate, like I was handed a water and given time to cool off in the chair before starting. I brought my over-processed, brassy balayage hair to Sonder's and met the sweet Kelly who helped darker my whole locks again then redid my balayage by hand. She gave me a great cut that fit my A-shaped, heavy hair into a manageable clean look. Price is heftier but I had to double color my hair so it took about 4 hours all together. Make sure you give clear instructions of what you want specifically and the color. This pains me so much to write a negative review as I've had good experiences in the past. I came into the salon with a bright neutral blonde. I simply asked for lowlights to add some dimension. I showed the picture and the stylist told me I could achieve it and even said it will make my hair blend way better. I had high hopes until I saw him look at the foil while the lowlights processed and could tell by the look in his face that the color would be off. He then warned me the color would be darker than I wanted but would eventually fade since he used a glaze, not dye. After he washed it out I was in complete shock. My hair went from a bright blonde to a muddy grey DARK brown. My roots are a warm brown so it doesn't match at all!! He told me over time it will fade and look good but I can't imagine it will since my hair is literally ash grey. He told me he had to use a dark ash in order to color over the few orange pieces in the underside of my hair. He told me this after, even though the orange strands didn't even bother me since they were barely visible. So he tried to fix a small problem that I didn't care about without warning me. Had I known I'd leave with brown hair I would have never done the service. Not once did he warn me that my hair wouldn't look like the photo in the end of the service. After the blow dry i asked when it would look like the picture and he said A MONTH. That's insane! I'm trying not to be upset over this but I only feel comfortable being blonde. I can't even look in the mirror without being upset. For a $360 (before tip) service I expect to have hair that I asked for or at least close to it. read more

I've been searching for a great place to do my hair for the longest! I found this place on yelp today and I messaged the owner (Loki) and he replied within minutes. He also helped to schedule an appointment on spot. As soon as I walked in I was greeted, offered water or tea and as you can see, I was given this robe. I showed Loki pictures of some hair ideas I had. He explained that the color could not be completed in one sitting due to previous hair damage and dyes. I appreciated the honesty considering I walked in with a bunch of different tones on my hair. Instead he gave me an array of ideas. AVOID THIS PLACE. WORST COLOR I HAVE EVER HAD. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS GARBAGE. I honestly have no idea how this place has good reviews for Loki. He literally has no idea what he is doing and is so rude. I was able to get a last minute appt with Loki and that should've been the first red flag regardless of the reviews on Yelp. I walked in with blonde balayage that was growing out and asked for balayage in a light blonde/ashy blonde but I wasn't so picky about the shade. All I asked for was for it to be LIGHT colored. I also wanted the balayage to start higher up rather than starting 1.5 inches below the scalp bc I have chin length hair. During the process early on I asked him some questions bc it didn't look like what I had asked him to do so I wanted to confirm what it would look like in the end. He responded with SUCH AN ATTITUDE by saying okay well I can wash it out for you and I won't charge you if you wanna leave. I was like I'm just trying to communicate with you about what I'm looking for.. and he said no you're telling me how to do your hair. I have an idea already about what it will look like so if you ask questions you're telling me how to do my job. I told him I was shocked at his response and I felt so uncomfortable. I chose to let him do his thing bc I'm busy and it was the only day I freed up for this BUT I SHOULD HAVE LEFT. Fast forward 5 hours and my hair is SO DARK. More problematically, it goes from BROWN on top TO DARK GREY. I was like.. is this what you meant for it to look like?.. and he acknowledged that it was not so he shampoo'd it out. But then it looked the same. He said it's more ashy at the bottom than he intended and he suggested that I wash my hair 6 more times lol. So he charges $374 and I included $26 tip (significantly less than what I'd normally give) for what looks like a botched single process which is not what I asked for. He did not want to communicate with me, did not care what I wanted, and did NOT know how to fix his mistake. If he actually had any skill or talent maybe it would've made up for his dirty attitude. But literally no skills for color or balayage. Please avoid. Now I have to find someone else to fix his mistake. Attached picture. I went in with blonde balayage... asking for ashy blonde balayage... and walked out with this mess and I'm down $400 lol. This salon is a joke. Edit: Do you see his response? That's the type of attitude this guy has lol. AND After he washed out the toner and he saw it was DARK with zero dimension going from brown to gray, I said, "This looks like single process." 3.5 Came here to get my hair balayaged by Loki. I loved how professional, funny, and adorable him and his assistant were. Genuinely concerned about your hair with suggestions to improve your cut/style, I liked that this salon delivers possible options and pricing per option. It was a 4 hr process in which I first bleached my hair. Based on the first bleach, I was provided a sample of colors that I could reach from there. Water was served and the color was as promised. HOWEVER, the reason why I took away 1.5 stars was because at the end, the tips of my balayage by my roots and parts of my fringe were brassy at the get go. The photos on the yelp page are taken right after with optimal lighting, and I was in love with my pictures. Unfortunately, I did not realize the brassiness until I got home and had it pointed it out to me in natural lighting. I wasn't sure if all the 5 star reviews were fake or influenced by the salon so I came in very hesitantly. After my (walk in) hair cut, I have to say they're all real. I hadn't cut my hair in so long because of COVID-19 and I had a big mass of just thick not cute hair. Mike was my stylist and listened so so so well to what I wanted (which was kind of rambling) and looked at the photos that I saved (which were all over the place) and managed to understand what I wanted. Seriously, I didn't even really know what I wanted but he managed to figure it out from the photos (which he even said were all different kinds of hair cuts). He walked through the whole process with me, showing me how my hair was cut previously and what steps he'd need to take to get the cut I wanted. He did a wet cut first and then a dry cut. Styled it for me and then even showed me how to style it at home. It was a great experience all around. The only downside was that I didn't realize they only took cash or venmo so I had to do some running around after the cut to try to find an ATM but they were super nice and trusting about it. All I know was that I wanted some metallic color that has a bit of blue but most importantly low key so that I had no trouble going to work. Loki is very nice and patient. Amazing job by Mike!! I came in with very long, virgin black hair and asked for a cut and (single-process) dye job. The color I wanted was a little hard to explain - I wanted a VERY dark red/reddish purple that was subtle enough to be barely noticeable in dimmer lighting but gave a distinct red shine in direct light. Like I dunked my head in red wine and it somehow imparted its hue on my locks. This was the strange, somewhat vague description I gave to Mike when I got in (+ showed a few photos that I'd found online beforehand) and he somehow understood instantly; "You want color that's there, but not there." And he delivered!! I LOVE the color, it's exactly what I wanted and I'll be coming back for probably the exact same thing in the future. My hair also feels extremely healthy and I've gotten many compliments on how it looks. The cut is also well done, and major props to Mike for being extra communicative during it to make sure I had the exact length and style I wanted. The entire cut+single process dye appointment took around 2.5 hours and cost $240. Not an amount I'm usually willing to drop but this was totally worth it. My only regret was forgetting to ask them to take a photo of my hair for me before I left. Every photo I try to take of the back of my head turns out blurry, so I'll have to update this later.
