It's 8:12 P.M. on a Sunday night as I pull into stall #22. My stomach growls with the force of 12 Lithuanian children, I peak my head out of the window to take a better look at the menu. I'm hit with a nice hefty humid sticky whiff of fast food. Anyways, it's deliberation time. What shall I get? With no help from my gorgeous girlfriend I without hesitation push the bright red button captioned "Press To Order" and patiently wait as the touchscreen tells us they'll be right with us. Which will turn out to be nothing but a facade bigger than a bachelors degree. 8:20 P.M. 8:22 P.M. Queue "Two hours later" SpongeBob transition. A few minutes later a car that pulled up to the stall next to us a few minutes after us was greeted with a message from the inside through their speaker, I hear something along the lines of "closed" and "stalls" but I naively assume it was just that stall and they immediately pull out after. Me, on the other hand, am at a stasis in waiting in my stall. 8:30 P.M., finally a voice cracks through the speakers. "We're sorry but stalls 13 through 24 are closed, the only ones available are stalls 1 through 12 or the drive thru. H a v e a n i c e d a y." Immediate regret hits me harder than a lineman with CTE. How could they have possibly informed the drivers in the stall next to us before us? Still want dat slush tho~ By this time it's established that the customer service is inefficient, and lacking time management skills, especially as I see the drive thru line up with cars, I was beginning to think I pulled up to a car show, something is obviously wrong. I drive up to the other side of the restaurant looking for an open stall in an otherwise full lot. Luckily one car pulled out of stall #3 and I quickly pull in. I press the button without hesitation and am prompted to wait. 8:40 P.M., "hellowelcometosonicswhatwouldyouliketoorder crackle static crackle." I went with a Blueberry Slush, Buffalo sauced boneless wings, chili cheese fries, a corndog, and a cheeseburger. By this time I've lost all faith that they'll be in any way prompt with delivering my order to my car despite their 200 horsepower skates. But still, I pay and wait. About halfway through the new Ariana Grande album they deliver my food, straight from the manager apologizing for the wait. The real kicker is that this was at 9:14 P.M.! Almost an entire hour later for mediocre food. The cheeseburger was probably the worst, soggy, flavorless patty, marinated with shame. The corndog was alright because who can mess up a corndog? The chili cheese fries had the right amount of cheese and chili but if you're looking for something with an explosion of flavors, this isn't it. The wings came drenched in sauce so much so that we were forced to blot them like a slice of pizza or a newborn babies face. The wings themselves were almost sponge like with no great texture. The Blueberry Slush tasted as if they put, from a dropper, a drop of blueberry syrup as when I looked into the cup it was nothing like in the advertised picture but rather the color of a light blue sky painted by Bob Ross. You can assume the slush tasted mostly like water, unfortunately. I've heard that Sonic are well-known for their variety of frozen drinks and "Add-ons" but what's good about Nerds candy submerged in all ice, with almost no flavor? You don't need a bachelors degree to know the answer to that. Short version: The food is not appetizing or flavorful, the customer service lacks any sort of service except for roller skating to your window after an hour from the moment you park, the Slush's are 99% crushed ice with little flavoring syrup added, and I also give Ariana Grande's new album a 7/10. Also I've had Yelp for a very long while, been to bad places despite some reviews I've read, but this is the first time I feel inclined to actually write a review because it was such a terrible experience. I lived in the South for more than 10 years and adore Sonic. This was my first... and last... visit to this Sonic. After waiting 20 minutes in a stall at this Sonic after we hit the button, with my kids fussing in the back, we gave up and went to the drive-thru. They let one car order in the 10 minutes we say there (that may not have happened... he may have given up and left too. We couldn't tell and never saw food handed to him). We played a game of watching how long other cars would wait before driving away without service. Meanwhile, my father walked to the nearby Subway, got his dinner, walked back and ate it. Been to this place a when it first opened, just went back again on Monday and what a dump. The food was alright, the low rating is based on the place and the knowledge of the server. This place is run down. There's no girls on roller skates, the majority of the order screens didn't work had to get off and order from the middle island and only one side worked except when trying to pay the display wasn't working. The lone server wasn't to familiar with want was going on with the menu. I asked about the half price happy hour specials, he said happy hour was over it ended at 4:00 pm. I had to tell him it was only 2:30 pm. The stench from the garage cans was too much to handle it was obvious the cans had rarely been cleaned as was the concrete. The majority of the neon lights were broken and the whole place was in dire need of a paint job. Didn't bother using the bathroom I could only imagine what condition it would be in, so went to the Tractor Supply store near by to use there's. You'd think Sonic as a multi-dollar corporation would keep their restaurant in much better shape, in this case and restaurant they let the place turn into a dump. Expect this location to be out of food when you arrive. My first attempt on a Sunday evening, their milkshake machine was "down". My second attempt, on a different day, they had run out of chicken strips, had no plain tea, only sweetened. My cheeseburger had no cheese and when I drove back around to complain that my order was "wrong" a server said, yeah that's because we ran out of cheese." I've seen Sonics commercials on TV for like 10+ years now, so recently I caved and decided to try it with some friends while shopping at Gilroy Outlets. We ordered $50 worth of food for 4 people, and none of us felt very full or happy with what we ordered. Burgers tasted dry and the only flavor came from the cheese. Tater tots weren't consistent; some were crispy and others were soggy and sad. The "real fruit" smoothies were basically snow cones that had mini fruit bits in them and tasted hella artificial. None of us would recommend Sonics. At best it's the type of place your friend might suggest and you'd go "eh sure" instead of "YO IM DOWN". If you're shopping at the outlets too, there's an In-N-Out and McDonald's there that are better tasting, cheaper, and also much closer. But c'mon Sonics. How are you gonna let McDonald's have cheaper food that also tastes better. Like what are YALL DOIN? 1 Star for food based on value, taste and quantity. Sonic has great food but as of lately the service has been the absolute worst. Last weekend we sat in a stall for 5 minutes before they told us it was drive through only. And the line wrapped around the entire building. Then yesterday it wasn't very busy when we got there at 730 at night. Yet I was 2nd in line for 20 minutes! I've been to this location a few times before and the latest experience was not up to par. In the past, I've come here during the late afternoon to order their chili cheese tater tots and both times, I've had a fairly good experience! The ordering system from the several car hops was quick and efficient; allowing you to order, pay, and eat all in the comfort of your car! However, this time, my friend and I were in the mood for a cheap late night snack and chose Sonics because it had been a long time since we've been. We arrived at around 10PM and had to order from the drive-thru as the car hops close after sunset. The customer service was no different from previous visits. But the food was drastically different. My friend and I ordered the tater tots, onion rings, and fries. Although bearable, the tater tots and fries were so stale that it tasted like they had been left out for days. However, I did not like the onion rings at all. I was honestly shocked by the quality of the food i received because I have had much better quality from this same location. My theory is that it was too late at night and the food served had been sitting there all day, but who knows what really happened. I'm not all that sure that I'd come back. But my tip for anyone wanting to try their food is to come before sunset. read more

I've been holding on to this one for a couple of weeks now and what more fitting for my 100th review than Sonic!!?? We've all seen the commercials for Sonic as they taunt us with their slushees and tater tots---and then pause to think, where is the closest Sonic for us to fulfill this craving? For the many of us in the South Bay, that used to be Tracy. And although gas prices are a bit down these days, I could never justify that far of a trek for fast food. But one glorious day, I get a message from a fellow Yelper telling me that they were opening one in Gilroy! Yipppeee!!! So, as a treat after some very successful holiday shopping at the outlets, the BF and I cruise over to finally have some Sonic goodness. (Note to you all: this Sonic is not at the Gilroy Premium Outlets exit but off of the 152 East exit--towards the road to LA). We pulled up to the "classic" intercom and place our order. The system was pretty efficient though it isn't clear if the "card sliding system" is just for the Sonic card or if you can use debit/credit cards with it too. Our delivery gal rolls up (literally "rolls" since she's on skates) to our car with our tray of Sonic yummy-ness. Jalapeno Bacon Burger, Coney Dog, tater tots and limeade slushees. Mmmm-hmmm... Did it hit the spot? UH-HUH! Was it tasty? HECK YEAH! Did I have remorse from eating all of that grease? Um, little bit...but we got over it. Guess I know where I'm stopping on my drive up back from LA this weekend. Granted 4 stars may be a bit high but I think I'm still reveling in the fact that this location is so much closer to us. I started my New Year by taking a ride to Gilroy and hitting up Sonic! I have been to Sonic before in the tiny town of Sierra Vista, AZ. Sonic was one of the first things there many years ago when my sister first moved there. I could never figure out why there were commercials for Sonic here when there was no Sonic in San Jose. At least there is one in Gilroy now and it's a short drive. This brought back memories of going to A & W when I was little. I love the car hops and the push the button to order option. Now to the food.... I had a bacon cheesburger and it was ok. I still LOVE the western bacon cheeseburger from Carl's Jr. Sonic's onion rings were delish! They had a light batter on the outside and the onions were sweet. Yummy! They have diet Dr. Pepper! Yay! Not many places have diet Dr. Pepper so I was happy. My daughter had a kids meal with a hot dog and fries and she loved it. She got a limeade and sucked the whole thing down in not time flat! She said it was really good. For dessert we had a milkshake.....mmmm....all I remember was that it was so creamy and yummy!! Vanilla, it was vanilla, cause that is my shake test. haha!! Will I go back? You bet!! I've always heard people talking about this chain which setup looks like a scene in the classic movies. People parking their car, ordering their food and have it delivered to the car by roller skating waiter. However, Don't come here if you don't plan to eat in your car or do a take out. We came here after cherry picking at the Borello family farm and we didn't want the kids to make a mess eating in the car so we opted to dine there. They have a couple of round tables that fit 4 adults+4 kids perfectly. The area is also shaded. However, you have to order through some speakerphone and there's only 1 for the whole dine in area. The person who's taking orders seems to have hard time listening. I saw that she got our order wrong on the screen, told her about it, she came out but no fix until the order came out. The payment option is kinda interesting too. You can pay right after you order in the machine. I think you can pay with app? (but can't order from app). Or you can wait for your food to be out and just pay the waiter. We ordered the bacon double cheeseburger and the chicken burger + the combo chicken fingers/tater tots/onion ring (singular! Coz there's only 1 piece). The tater tots are very good. Onion ring is meh. Fries that comes with combo is very small portion. The strawberry limeade is soda based and just already. Kiddos like the grape slurpees kind of drink but apparently grape flavor is extra charge and the cashier didn't elaborate on that. They have some thing like the mcD mcFlurries. I ordered the oreos sonic blast. Medium size is definitely too much. Will suggest kids size instead. read more

Great experience. First I read Yelp reviews and based on these I had set myself up for a bad experience. Turned out after setting low expectations, that it was one of the best experiences and reminded me of my childhood days at Sonic. We used the App, which I highly recommend as it was Saturday around 1:00 pm and totally crowed. We had chili cheese dogs, fries and shakes. Everything was fresh, hot and we even received all condiments. The service was great and the carhops were friendly. I think that the corporate marketing team at Sonic is genius. They advertise on cable stations throughout the country which may, or may not have a Sonic in their area. It makes fools like me that live in the Bay Area crave to be part of the phenomena that is Sonic and try them out. On December 30th, that dream came true. (Well, in the Bay Area, anyway, because I have been to one in Utah ... it just makes for a more of an epic story if I said it was my first visit to the restaurant EVER.) We drove down to the 152 exit, turned left (heading south) and like a beacon, saw the sign for Sonic. We drove-in, took our spot in one of the multiple drive-in stalls, and studied the menu. It's your standard drive-in/fast food, with a few interesting menu items like Frito Pie wraps, and everyone's favorite: tater tots. I ended up ordering a breakfast burrito meal, which came with tater tots and a medium drink. For an additional ten cents, I added some sugar-free cherry "flavoring" to my diet Sprite. While the food wasn't all that impressive, I would have to say the experience in itself was worth the wait. I now can say that I was part of the Sonic phenomena, and can mark that off as one of the things that I've always wanted to try. Next stop, if I ever can, a real White Castle! read more

My husband and I have somewhat (but not really) jokingly named this location "the worst Sonic in America". The only time I'd ever recommend someone to go here is if I really despised them, because otherwise that'd just be mean. It's literally always something with this place. We're originally from the midwest where there's a Sonic in every town, so the only reason I've given it so many chances is because it's familiar and tastes like home. Thankfully, after reading other reviews, I'm glad to know it's not just me who loves to hate this place. The only thing you can count on them for is to get your order wrong. Any deviation from the way an item is listed on the menu is met with total confusion; even something simple like, "no onions, please". Once time I sat at the drive thru speaker for 10 minutes with no answer, no "be with you in a minute", nothing; I assumed it was broken, so I pulled up to the window. I tried to explain but before I could get anything out, the girl cut me off with a lovely, "so what'd you want?" Several other visits I have pulled up to the stall, pressed the order button, and have been met with a curt, "DRIVE THRU ONLY." Once, I ordered an item with no issues, then ordered the same item again a day or two later and was told they didn't have that item and never have. It's truly laughable. After seeing numerous commercials on t.v for Sonic, I just had to check this place out. So I finally did about a week ago on my way to L.A. It's almost right off the freeway which is great. I ordered a N.Y hot dog (this one comes with sauerkraut, mustard, and onions). I also ordered a small order of tater tots and onion rings since I couldn't decide which to get. I know I sound like a pig now, but hey, that was my lunch and dinner for the day! Anyways, I didn't really care for the hot dog. It tasted like one of those hot dogs with the weird combination of chicken or turkey in it. I only like beef hot dogs. The onion rings were just OK. I won't get those again. The tater tots however were only a dollar and wow, those were some of the best tater tots that I've ever had! I decided to give this place four stars mostly because of the tater tots and the fact that the nice girl at the drive thru window told me to not forget my hot dog before I drove off. Most employees at fast food places probably wouldn't bother reminding you if you have your whole order or not. I assumed that it was in the bag. Also, the shakes there looked really good! They have a ton of different flavors that are unique for a fast food place like peanut butter banana, strawberry cheesecake, peanut butter cookie, etc...It's also kind of cool to how the servers outside will roller skate to the cars parked out front at the booths, lol. read more

The snacks are good too but I prefer something cool and refreshing. You can park and order there, go thru the drive thru window or go to outdoor seating and order from the menu there. The service is awesome and the staff is friendly. What is nice about it too is that the servers are on their skates and delivering you your food. Balancing on skates and holding a tray of foods and drinks is pretty cool. The only place around I know that does this which makes this a unique place.
